Berkshire Country Day School

2016-17 Annual Report

...celebrating promises fulfilled

Mission Berkshire Country Day School exists to inspire the individual promise of every student, that each may become an exemplary citizen of the world.

Philosophy Berkshire Country Day School’s intentional approach of inquiry, discovery, and discussion blends proven methods with emerging best practices to draw fully on the experiences and contributions of our entire school community. Our comprehensive curriculum, which includes project-based and experiential learning, leverages the talents of our exemplary educators and the natural resources of our extraordinary campus to inspire independence, academic excellence, and mutual respect.

Values Originality, Quality, Respect, Sustainability, Community, Wellness, Citizenship

...celebrating promises fulfilled

One such promise fulfilled was marked in October when BCD’s 8th and 9th Grade students set sail on the Hudson River sloop Clearwater. This annual trip will now be made possible by the James C. Kapteyn Endowment for Environmental Studies, which honors the memory of Jamie Kapteyn ’76 and his love of environmental studies and water conservation. A profound thank-you goes to the committed and passionate Class of 1976. In April, 250 members of our community gathered to celebrate the Capital Campaign success and the opening of the Kevin Hirt Library and Learning Commons and the Kim and James Taylor Music / Performance Room. We celebrated promises fulfilled—the promise made to ten-year-old Kevin Hirt ’06 and his family to create a transformational library and learning commons; the promises made to current and future students to build a dedicated music and performance space where they can cultivate their musical abilities and creativity; and the promises made to our talented and dedicated faculty to ensure they have the resources necessary to maintain and strengthen our unique and comprehensive curriculum. My gratitude goes to campaign leadership Hilary Dunne Ferrone and Chris Ferrone, Hilary Somers Deely and Philip Deely ’61, and Kim and James Taylor, and the 468 contributors, who collectively exceeded our $3 million goal, raising $3,240,202! The month of May brought yet another triumphant fundraising gala, "The Jet Age: A Mod Soirée." Our promises were fulfilled to current students as we exceeded our fundraising goals for financial aid last year. The unprecedented underwriting support from over 20 local businesses across Berkshire County led by 37 Interlaken Road Project,

Merit, rEvolve Furniture, Allegrone Construction, and Canyon Ranch made this success possible. My thanks to the creative vision of our Co-Chairs Jennifer Capala, Tereza Hubkova, and Ashley Junod. Every day of the year, we celebrate the promises fulfilled, both large and small, that are made possible by our donor-supported Annual Fund. I appreciate the leadership of the 2016-17 Annual Fund Co-Chairs, current parents Mark and Osneyda Miller, and the support and commitment of each of the 292 generous donors to this year's Annual Fund. Within these pages are the names and stories of a vibrant community, one that understands and embraces the promise of this intentional, independent, and inspired school. On behalf of the students, the faculty, and the staff, I extend heartfelt appreciation to everyone who gave so generously to Berkshire Country Day School last year. Your support and participation meaningfully impacts all that we value and pursue. Sincerely,

Paul Lindenmaier Head of School

Capital Campaign Gifts...fulfilling the promise

Fulfilling the Promise exceeded the $3 million goal, raising $3,240,202! With the completion of our first formal capital campaign in two decades, we have strengthened our Endowed Fund for Faculty Salaries, opened the Kim and James Taylor Music / Performance Room and the Kevin Hirt Library and Learning Commons, and installed new pathways. Our gratitude to the 468 donors for helping us fulfill the promise!

Capital Campaign Gifts continued

BCD is as wonderful a school as we have ever known. It provided our boys with an excellent education. It also held them in a warm, tolerant, and gracious community. From the remarkably dedicated faculty, the robust arts and music program, and the caliber and character of fellow students, we feel so fortunate that Henry and Rufus started out life in this unique setting. James and I are delighted by the success of the School’s Capital Campaign. Special kudos to Hilary Dunne Ferrone and Chris Ferrone, our dear friends, who have worked tirelessly as part of the dedicated cadre of parents and staff. All hail BCD! — Kim Taylor

By including BCD in their estate planning today, Brook Farm Legacy Society members ensure a strong and sustainable financial future for our School. A planned gift is a way to make a gift now that will provide current financial benefits to you and future benefits to BCD. There are a number of ways to make a gift while keeping income and realizing current tax deductions. These can include bequests in a will, naming BCD as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy, or establishing a charitable trust. For more information, please consult your financial advisor and contact BCD’s Development Office.

I am supporting BCD because of my extraordinary educational experience. I still am in touch with many of my classmates. It was not just academics but values, friends, and life lessons! Class of 72! Walker Street to Brook Farm! K-9! — Richard B. Shipton, Jr. ’72

We than k our leaders hip underw riters fo generou sly supp r orti Spring Soirée a ng nd our Fin ancial A i d Program !

For 50 years, Bard College at Simon’s Rock has brought the benefits of a liberal arts college education to younger students. Our core philosophy is that many high school students are ready, now, to take on meaningful, serious academic challenges. This guiding principle has earned us a 99% academic rating from the Princeton Review, and 78% of our students go on to graduate study. With the addition of Bard Academy at Simon’s Rock, we now welcome 9th and 10th graders to our beautiful Berkshire campus. Here they pursue an intensive two-year high school curriculum (taught by college faculty) specially designed to prepare them to enter college at Simon’s Rock after the second year.

BCD Endowments While gifts to the Annual Fund support the education of current students, gifts to the endowment provide for the School’s future. In addition to our general endowment, friends of Berkshire Country Day School have created the following endowments to provide support for BCD. KAPTEYN SCHOLARSHIP The Kapteyn family established this scholarship in 1981 in honor of their parents, Jim and Jancy Kapteyn. FIFTH DECADE FUND The Fifth Decade Fund was started in 1986 in celebration of BCD’s 40th birthday and the School’s focus on teacher salaries. ENDOWMENT FOR FACULTY SALARIES Established in 1990, this endowed fund was created to support BCD’s teachers. The draw on this endowment supports faculty compensation, making it an essential resource for BCD’s efforts to attract, hire, and retain exemplary teachers. DONALD T. OAKES FUND FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND CITIZENSHIP Donald Oakes was BCD’s Head of School from 1958-1968. This fund was created in 2003 by Donald and Betty Oakes on the occasion of Mr. Oakes’ 80th birthday celebration, hosted by BCD. The fund supports prizes given annually to BCD students in recognition of exceptional performance. TRACY MACGRUER FACULTY ENDOWMENT FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Tracy MacGruer Swanson was one of BCD’s most beloved faculty members, having worked at BCD for nearly 30 years (1963-1992).

22 | 2016-17 Annual Report

This endowment was established in 2004 to support the continued professional development of her colleagues and future generations of BCD faculty members. CLASS OF 2004 ENDOWMENT FUND FOR FINANCIAL AID This endowment was established by the BCD 2S Class of 2004 as a departing gift to their school and provides financial support for those eligible and deserving students who require tuition assistance to attend BCD. CHAUNCEY LOOMIS ENDOWMENT This fund was established in 2004 by friends and admirers of Chauncey Loomis. Upon the closing of the Secondary School, Chauncey Loomis directed that annual proceeds be used to support the Head’s Discretionary Fund. CLASS OF 2005 ENDOWMENT FUND FOR FINANCIAL AID This endowment was established by Brian and Lois Levinsohn and the BCD 2S Class of 2005 in memory of Samantha Levinsohn ’05 2S. The fund helps provide tuition assistance to eligible and deserving BCD students. JAMES C. KAPTEYN ENDOWMENT FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES To honor the life of Jamie Kapteyn ’76 and his passion for rivers and conservation, the James C. Kapteyn Endowment for Environmental Studies was created in 2010 by his friends and fellow BCD classmates. Jamie was an inspiring educator, poet, avid fisherman, and lover

of rivers. Proceeds from this endowment underwrite an annual educational experience on the Hudson River sloop Clearwater as part of the Eighth Grade curriculum.

Kapteyn Endowment maiden voyage!

Seeded in 2010, this endowed fund provides annual proceeds to support the professional growth and care for BCD’s faculty. Gifts to the fund ensure that BCD’s faculty can imagine innovation in their practice and invest in ongoing programs designed to enhance, maintain, and refine their competencies. This growth is essential to school improvement and increased student success. Special consideration is given to faculty teams seeking to invest in collaborative learning and/or projects when awarding grants from this fund. PAUL AND SUSAN FRANTZ ENDOWMENT FOR FINANCIAL AID Established in 2012 in honor of long-time BCD faculty and administration members Paul and Susan Frantz, who taught at BCD from 1990-2012 and 1996-2012 respectively. This endowment supports tuition assistance for students who could not otherwise afford a BCD education. The endowment was created to honor the commitment of these two educators to inspire the promise of each student. EUGÉNIE AND JIM FAWCETT FUND FOR FACULTY SALARIES Established in 2014, this fund is named in honor of Eugénie and Jim Fawcett, an outstanding teaching couple who have taught at BCD for a combined 83 years. The draw on this endowment helps support faculty compensation and was fully funded in the 2016-17 school year.

Our 8th and 9th graders and members of the Class of 1976 set sail on the inaugural sloop Clearwater voyage on the Hudson River in October 2016. This annual excursion honors the life of BCD alumnus Jamie Kapteyn ’76 and his passion for rivers and conservation. Funded by the James C. Kapteyn Endowment for Environmental Studies, which was created in 2010 by Jamie’s friends and BCD classmates, this legacy gift is now part of the BCD curriculum and will educate generations of children, support BCD’s core value of sustainability, and honor the memory of Jamie and his passion for environmental studies and water conservation.
