2014–15 Annual Report

...celebrating our progress

Mission Berkshire Country Day School exists to inspire the individual promise of every student, that each may become an exemplary citizen of the world.

Philosophy Berkshire Country Day School is dedicated to encouraging academic excellence at the highest level and to realizing each student’s potential for well-rounded development. We provide a stimulating and challenging education in a supportive and nurturing environment. In the spirit of inquiry and discovery, students learn to be resourceful and responsible. In an atmosphere of mutual respect, students learn about community and caring for others. Berkshire Country Day School is a place where each student can meet success as a 21st century learner.

Values Originality, Quality, Respect, Sustainability, Community, Wellness, Citizenship

O

n behalf of the entire Berkshire Country Day School community of students, faculty, and staff, I extend a warm thank you to everyone who gave generously to BCD last year. With this 2014-15 Annual Report of Giving I am proud to share that we as a community continue to demonstrate fiscal responsibility and thoughtful, intentional planning, as we advance our vision for the School and offer our very best to the children.

and deep explorations into the arts. These wellreceived changes encourage each child’s imagination while supporting the School’s values of quality, originality, and citizenship.

This June, following the course of stewardship outlined in our 2011 Master Facilities Plan, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved two major projects in Furey Hall: the transformation of the music room to become The Kevin Hirt Library and Learning Commons, and the renovation of the band room to become a new Music and Performance Room. The exciting news is we plan to break ground for these projects in June of 2016. Later this year, you can expect to learn more about BCD’s vision for the future and how you can participate.

As new and innovative program ideas continue to emerge, as faculty members pursue professional development, and as we move to complete the most dramatic upgrade to our historic campus in nearly two decades, each of us will be asked to continue our support of BCD.

The 2014-15 school year saw the creation of our new pathways—also envisioned during our master planning process. These new pathways facilitate our students’ moving between buildings with joy and boundless energy. The aesthetic and functional upgrade of our outdoor space also represents the School’s progress and plans for the future. By better managing water run-off, the new pathways also reduce the environmental impact of our campus on surrounding properties and the Stockbridge Bowl. Plus, they look beautiful!

Thank you again for contributing to our collective success through your generous donations to the Annual Fund, ArtSoirée, the endowment, and our beloved campus. Your gifts and participation have meaningfully impacted the learning experiences of the children at BCD, today and for years to come.

Our new arts initiative has expanded our culture of creativity by connecting our program to artists in the larger community. Students produce artwork in well-appointed and materials-rich studio spaces. Under the leadership of visual arts program coordinator Sasha Sicurella, the redesigned curriculum includes local artists as instructors working alongside our students, providing rich experiences

Paul Lindenmaier Head of School

In gratitude,

Annual Fund Donors The Annual Fund supports the day-to-day experiences of our students. Each year, the School must raise funds to make up the difference between tuition revenue and the true cost of a BCD education. During the 2014-15 year, 290 donors helped us meet our Annual Fund goal of $205,000. * Annual Fund gift at Leadership Level ($1,000+)

Berkshire Country Day School ...fulfilling the promise

Berkshire Country Day School is currently engaged in the most dramatic upgrade to our historic campus in a generation. The Master Facilities Plan of 2011 outlined a fifteenyear strategy to preserve and update the School’s physical plant. The first improvements have already been completed. The summer of 2014 saw the creation of BCD’s new Courtyard and Pathways by hardscape designers Triad Associates, Inc. of Haverhill, MA, which improved the School’s outdoor space both aesthetically and functionally. That is just the beginning. In June of 2014, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to hire Boston-based Flansburgh Architects to complete the initial phases of design for some of the School’s facilities projects. The Buildings & Grounds Committee thought Flansburgh Architects’ proposal was the most dynamic, noting their ability to utilize clear design solutions to create simple, functional buildings with elements of both traditional and modern styles successfully woven in. Flansburgh is recognized as a leader in the planning and design of academic facilities, having completed more than 275 educational projects including recent undertakings with Indian Mountain School, Miss Hall’s School, and the Williston-Northampton School.

The process by which the architects and the school arrived at the current design solutions involved workshops and meetings during the fall and winter of 2014. Several groups were involved in these workshops including the Buildings & Grounds Board Committee, faculty representatives from each division, staff members, and a group of Upper School students. Flansburgh’s principal-in-charge Kelley Banks and project architect Madeleine Le conducted these workshops, presented their work to the faculty and staff, and led field trips to other schools with similar programs.

Furey Hall Renovations THE KEVIN HIRT LIBRARY AND LEARNING COMMONS

Kevin Hirt ’06 was a curious and passionate student who believed that libraries have the power to inspire and transform learning. While at BCD, library was Kevin’s favorite period of the week. He was interested in a multitude of diverse topics and loved fi nding information in books, videos, and audio recordings. In 2001, while undergoing treatment for the cancer that ultimately ended his life, Kevin asked his parents to donate the money intended for his college education to BCD for the creation of a new library. BCD is now poised to fulfi ll our promise to Kevin and his family.

This past June, the Board again voted unanimously to proceed with Flansburgh’s designs, which include the Kevin Hirt Library and Learning Commons and the new Music and Performance Room.

Furey Hall 7.2.2015

RESERVED

Designed to occupy what is currently the music room in Furey Hall, the stunning, multi-level design of The Kevin Hirt Library and Learning Commons provides dedicated areas for all age groups, including a reading area for younger children, an open floor plan which can double as a meeting space, and a glass-enclosed Distance Learning classroom. Portions of the ceiling may be opened to a newly glazed wall in the Art Studios above, allowing for a visual connection between the two spaces. The room will have interior and exterior entrances for easy accessibility, and a courtyard gathering area to provide an outdoor learning space. The Kevin Hirt Library and Learning Commons will significantly expand our academic resources. Incorporating traditional books and reference materials alongside current technology and a broad range of appropriate online content, it will support programs that foster a love of reading in younger students, and provide tools that encourage innovation, creativity, and critical thinking in students of all ages.

With courses ranging from digital music composition, guitar ensemble, a cappella singing, musical theater, Caribbean music, Jazz Band, and more, students at BCD participate in a music program designed to cultivate their abilities and creativity. The strength of this program prepares students as future singers, instrumentalists, composers, and music enthusiasts. Currently the music program is based in the Furey Hall multipurpose room, which will become the new library. The Master Plan calls for the creation of a dedicated Music and Performance Room, and the existing Band Room will be transformed into this space. The stage that currently opens to the multipurpose room will be reoriented to face the new Music and Performance Room, which will have enough column-free floor space for up to 100 seats. The east wall will feature windows looking out to our iconic pond and pines. This Music and Performance room could also host public performances, expanding and enhancing our connection to the Berkshire community and bringing even more vitality and currency to our campus.

Strengthening our Endowment As with all independent schools, the cost of BCD’s program exceeds tuition revenue; therefore, the School must raise both annual and endowment funds to meet these needs. Our endowment has grown considerably in recent years; currently it stands at $1.3 million. However, that is insufficient for a school of BCD’s size, longevity, and strategic aspirations. The Eugénie and Jim Fawcett Fund for Faculty Salaries will allow the School to advance faculty salaries to appropriate levels, ensuring that the School will attract and retain superior teachers committed to our mission. Named for our beloved teachers, Eugénie Fawcett has taught Latin for 44 years, while Jim Fawcett has taught English for 38 years — all at BCD! Their extraordinary achievement stands out among the members of the National Association of Independent Schools Endowment growth also supports fi nancial aid, professional development, and general operations. These enhance the educational experience of every student, allow the School to offer affordable tuition, ensure student diversity, and secure our long-term interests. Berkshire Country Day School

MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE ROOM

Albright Hall Renovation The gateway to BCD, Albright Hall houses all administrative offices, including the Office of Admission and the School Nurse, as well as BCD’s Preschool and Kindergarten classes. After the library is moved to Furey Hall, plans include a reorganization of the building’s layout so that the main level is a welcoming Reception area, with a relocated Office of Admission and a private, easily accessible Nurse’s Office, as per the Master Facilities Plan.

A large opening that faces the entry foyer will welcome guests into a spacious Reception room that includes a waiting area. The storage area that currently looks out onto the playing fields and Route 183 would be renovated to house the Admission Office and the Nurse’s Offices. The design would also allow the exterior of the structure to echo the original look of Brook Farm, with its south-facing porch on the front of the building.

Financial support of BCD ensures the School’s ability to provide our students with an innovative, dynamic education. As BCD’s 70th Anniversary approaches in 2016, we have the opportunity to secure the future of the School while fulfilling our promises to BCD’s past and present community.

Welcoming Dr. Susan Gebhard

We are excited to announce that Dr. Susan Gebhard joined the BCD administration as Associate Head of School this summer.

Dr. Gebhard received a BA in English and History from Duke University, an MAT in Elementary Education from the University of Pittsburgh, and an EdD in Instructional Technology from Duquesne University. She holds a Professional Certificate from the Commonwealth of PA, and a North Carolina Professional Teaching License.

Dr. Gebhard’s resume is impressive. During her thirty-two year career in education, she has served in a number of school roles including as an elementary classroom teacher, a reading specialist, a Lower School English and History Department Chair,

During her interview at BCD, Dr. Gebhard’s passion for students and her keen interest in teachers and education was immediately evident to the faculty, administrators, and parents who met with her. Her breadth of experience, track record of

overseeing and coordinating curriculum innovation and development, and demonstrated abilities leading technology

initiatives in schools were equally impressive. It is clear that she has a great deal to offer as our new Associate Head of School.

Dr. Gebhard’s arrival coincides with the departure of Carmen Dockery Perkins who plans to follow her longstanding goal to secure an administrative position at an international school abroad. Mrs. Dockery Perkins worked at BCD for fifteen years, arriving in 2000 as the Dean of Students and a Spanish and French teacher for the inaugural year of BCD’s high school. Mrs. Dockery Perkins served as Associate Head of School and as a language teacher since 2003, first at the high school and then when she moved to this campus in 2007 to lead the Middle and Upper schools. She assumed the role of academic leader for the whole school in 2012. With a caring approach and a regard for teachers and teaching, Mrs. Dockery Perkins advanced BCD and its programs, touching the educational and personal lives of scores of students, parents, and colleagues. In addition to expressing her leadership skills in countless ways throughout the curriculum, Mrs. Dockery Perkins was engaged fully in all areas of the School: she led language immersion trips abroad, organized the student council, and oversaw the co-curricular programs. During the second half of her tenure, she also served as our secondary school counselor. In all ways, Mrs. Dockery Perkins took a special interest in each student’s success. We wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. Berkshire Country Day School

a Head of Lower School, and as an Academic Dean. She has also taught at the college level, as an Instructor of Education at Slippery Rock University, as an Assistant Professor of Education at The University of NC, and as the Director of Teacher Education and Graduate Studies at Salem College. Additionally, she has been an Instructional Design Consultant in the Greensboro area.

Sloane Family Makes Surprise Bequest to Berkshire Country Day School BCD is honored to announce a surprise bequest from longtime community member, Helen C.S “Kimmie” Sloane. Mrs. Sloane left a significant gift in her will many years ago, unbeknownst to BCD. Head of School Paul Lindenmaier was surprised to open his mail this summer and find the generous check. “I am deeply touched by the kindness of a family who knows the school so well,” said Mr. Lindenmaier. “This gift comes at a most opportune time as BCD looks to the future with exciting new plans to enhance our beautiful campus and further secure our financial stability.” Mrs. Sloane was a Trustee at BCD, an active volunteer and a teacher in the Lower School. Her husband, James R. Sloane, was President of the Board and the namesake for Sloane Field. The Sloane children are all

Join the Brook Farm Legacy Society BCD graduates: Wick ’68, Kim ’70, and Mary ’72. In a letter Mr. Lindenmaier that accompanied the gift, daughter Mary wrote, “Her years teaching at BCD were treasured memories and a highlight for her. BCD continues, under your leadership, to be the wonderful, creative and compassionate school it always has been,” said Mary, now a photographer in Sante Fe. As BCD prepares for its 70th year, planned giving has become an effective way to secure its future. Members of the Brook Farm Legacy Society have stated their intent to provide for Berkshire Country Day School in their estate plans. Former Trustee Philip Deely ’61 said, “Making a bequest like Kimmie’s to BCD helps ensure our valued institution will be here for generations to come.” Mrs. Sloane’s family agrees. “My school in New York City had declared me a failure for life, but Marcia Jones and Donald Oakes of BCD saved me,” said Wick, now a teacher at Bunker Hill Community College. “Every student and parent at BCD has a story like that. As evidence of my affection for BCD, I was glad she gave the school the money and not me,” he joked.

By including BCD in their estate planning, Brook Farm Legacy Society members ensure a strong and sustainable financial future for the School. Making a planned gift to BCD does not mean immediately parting with income from assets. A planned gift is a way to make a gift now that will provide current financial benefits to you and future benefits to BCD. There are a number of ways to make a gift while keeping income and realizing current tax deductions. These can include bequests in your will, naming BCD as a beneficiary in your life insurance policy, or establishing a Charitable Trust. For more information, please consult your financial advisor and contact BCD’s Development Office.

The Brook Farm Legacy Society

“Kimmie could bring out the best in people,” said Susan Merrill, a former BCD art teacher. “She gave my daughter a lot of extra time and taught her to knit. At five or six, Daisy was dyeing sheep’s wool and knitting it into a hat with a pom-pom.” Friends and colleagues including Molly Kapteyn ’69 Boxer of Richmond, Celia Kittredge of Tyringham and Jane Ryan of Stockbridge are uniformly glowing as they recall memories of Mrs. Sloane from decades ago. “Kimmie was such principled woman who felt so strongly about education,” said Mrs. Boxer, a former BCD French teacher. “She loved being in the lives of the children at BCD.” Mrs. Sloane died peacefully on May 5, 2015 at the age of 91. She is survived by her three children and five grandchildren Phoebe, Will, Sam, Claire, and Otto.

BCD Endowments While gifts to the Annual Fund support the education of current students, gifts to endowment provide for the School’s future. In addition to our general endowment, friends of Berkshire Country Day School have created the following endowments to provide support for the School.

TRACY MACGRUER FACULTY ENDOWMENT FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Tracy MacGruer Swanson was one of BCD’s most beloved faculty members, having worked at BCD for nearly 30 years (1963-1992). This endowment was established in 2004 to support the continued professional development of her colleagues and future generations of BCD faculty members. CLASS OF 2004 ENDOWMENT FUND FOR FINANCIAL AID

THE KAPTEYN SCHOLARSHIP

The Kapteyn family established this scholarship in 1981 in honor of their parents, Jim and Jancy Kapteyn. THE FIFTH DECADE FUND

The Fifth Decade Fund was started in 1986 in celebration of BCD’s 40th birthday and the School’s focus on teacher salaries. THE ENDOWMENT FOR FACULTY SALARIES

Kapteyn Endowment for Environmental Studies was created in 2010 by his friends and fellow BCD classmates. Jamie was an inspiring educator, poet, avid fisherman, and lover of rivers. Once the necessary funds

have been collected to fulfill this endowment, its proceeds will be used to underwrite an annual educational experience on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater as part of the 8th grade biology curriculum. THE EXPLORATION FUND FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Seeded in 2010, this endowed fund provides annual proceeds to support the professional growth and care for BCD’s faculty. Gifts to the fund ensure that BCD’s faculty can imagine innovation in their practice and invest in ongoing programs designed to enhance, maintain, and refine their competencies. This growth is essential to school improvement and increased student success. Special consideration is given to faculty teams seeking to invest in collaborative learning and/or projects when awarding grants from this fund. PAUL AND SUSAN FRANTZ ENDOWMENT FOR FINANCIAL AID

Established in 2012 in honor of Paul and Susan Frantz, this endowment supports one partial scholarship for a student who could not otherwise afford a Berkshire Country Day School education. The endowment was created to honor the commitment of these two educators to inspiring the promise of each student.

Established in 2014, this fund is named in honor of Eugénie and Jim Fawcett, an outstanding teaching couple at BCD. Eugénie has taught Latin at BCD for 44 years while Jim has taught English at the school for 38 years. The draw on this endowment supports faculty compensation.
