...celebrating our community
A
BCD is proud to be a donor-supported school, and participation in the Annual Fund is central to our support of every child, each teacher, and all of our programs. We appreciate the leadership of last year’s Annual Fund Co-Chairs, current parents Stephanie Buchanan and Jeremy Creelan, and the support and commitment from every Annual Fund donor. From the official launch of Fulfilling the Promise: The Campaign for Berkshire Country Day School in December to increasing salaries and breaking ground on the Kevin Hirt Library and Learning Commons and the Kim and James Taylor Music and Performance Room, the dreams we have held with intention over many years are being realized. From fully funding the James C. Kapteyn Endowment for Environmental Studies to achieving record attendance at the
Spring Soirée, Mocktoberfest, the annual fundraiser for our Financial Aid Program, our community is advancing our experiential education program while ensuring that BCD remains accessible to all. I hope you enjoy reading about the many ways our community expressed its strength and supported Berkshire Country Day School last year. On behalf of the students, the faculty, and the staff, I offer my sincere thanks to everyone who generously gave gifts of time, talent, and financial support. Because of your engagement, our treasured BCD remains an integral and thriving cultural institution in the Berkshires. In gratitude,
Paul Lindenmaier Head of School

Letter from the Head of School
s Berkshire Country Day School enters its 71st year, we celebrate our community and everything about it that makes BCD quintessentially “The Berkshires.” Our mission and philosophy, core values and curriculum, and beautiful campus are all intentionally designed to allow each individual to engage in teaching, learning, and growth in a deeply personal way. Every child and family is individually known and understood here, and together we form a vibrant and engaged community. Each day I have the privilege of witnessing how our talented teachers, amazing students, and supportive families reveal and express the culture of our unique community and shape the relevant and inspiring institution that connects us all. Within the pages of this 2015-16 Annual Report of Giving, we celebrate the many ways that our community contributed to BCD last year.

Annual Fund Donors
The Annual Fund helps to pay the difference between the amount raised from tuition and the total cost to educate each child at BCD. It helps to pay our teachers’ salaries, buy classroom supplies, keep the lights on, maintain the grounds, and more, every day of the week. During the 2015-16 year, 327 donors helped us raise $180,900 for the Annual Fund.

PE teacher Gail Heady retired in June, concluding an extraordinary 38-year teaching career at BCD. Mrs. Heady has been nothing short of an exemplary teacher, advisor, coach, and colleague. Her famous phrase, “keep trying,” has been applied in all of these contexts and more. She has encouraged every student at BCD to develop the confidence, selfawareness, and skills to pursue a lifetime of physical activity and sports. From basketball to soccer to volleyball and beyond, she has championed all of her kids to never give up. She has utilized every square foot of our campus,
taking the students kayaking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, ice-skating, and hiking. Fun and Field Day 2016 was renamed in Mrs. Heady’s honor, much to her surprise. She stepped inside Fitzpatrick Hall to find all students and faculty wearing BCD t-shirts that read “Mrs. Heady Day” with the number 38, to represent her years of teaching. Her career was further recognized at graduation with the first presentation of the Gail Heady Citizenship Award, which will be given annually to an Eighth Grade girl. The recipient
of the award has, like Mrs. Heady, contributed to the quality of the school community, demonstrating integrity, citizenship, support for others, and an unwavering commitment to the values and culture that we hold dear at BCD. This person should be positive, kind, a model for goodness in all endeavors, and known as a reliable, generous, and supportive friend and community member. It should be evident to all that Berkshire Country Day School is a better place because of the recipient. The first recipient was Emily Carmel ’17.
The announcement of Mrs. Heady’s retirement was met with an outpouring from the BCD community past and present. “Say it’s not so,” said Paul Frantz, former BCD Associate Head of School. “Gail embodies the spirit and values that define BCD!” For her part Mrs. Heady said, “When I drove up to BCD for the first time for my interview, and I saw the acreage, I jumped on it. It was the best thing I ever did.” We thank Mrs. Heady for her many years of dedication to BCD and wish her well in her retirement.

Thank you to Gail Heady
Gail Heady, thank you for 38 years!
Berkshire Country Day School is an extraordinary school that intentionally balances a comprehensive, challenging curriculum with the culture and spirit of the Berkshires. It’s a treasure for families and for the community.
“
I call upon the gifts that BCD offered me every day. As an academic tutor and life coach, my work is strongly influenced by what I gained at BCD. Above all, BCD taught me the true power of relationship and care in education. It was by far the most profound part of my education and learning. — Julia Kleederman ’05

Making a planned gift to BCD does not mean immediately parting with income from assets. A planned gift is a way to make a gift now that will provide current financial benefits to you and future benefits to BCD. There are a number of ways to make a gift while keeping income and realizing current tax deductions. These can include bequests in your will, naming BCD as a beneficiary in your life insurance policy, or establishing a Charitable Trust. For more information, please consult with your financial advisor and contact BCD’s Development Office.

BCD Endowments While gifts to the Annual Fund support the education of current students, gifts to the endowment provide for the School’s future. In addition to our general endowment, friends of Berkshire Country Day School have created the following endowments to provide support for BCD. THE KAPTEYN SCHOLARSHIP The Kapteyn family established this scholarship in 1981 in honor of their parents, Jim and Jancy Kapteyn. THE FIFTH DECADE FUND The Fifth Decade Fund was started in 1986 in celebration of BCD’s 40th birthday and the School’s focus on teacher salaries. THE ENDOWMENT FOR FACULTY SALARIES Established in 1990, this endowed fund was created to support BCD’s teachers. The draw on this endowment supports faculty compensation, making it an essential resource for BCD’s efforts to attract, hire, and retain exemplary teachers. DONALD T. OAKES FUND FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND CITIZENSHIP Donald Oakes was BCD’s Head of School from 1958-1968. This fund was created in 2003 by Donald and Betty Oakes on the occasion of Mr. Oakes’ 80th birthday celebration, which was hosted by BCD. The fund supports prizes given annually to BCD students in recognition of exceptional performance. TRACY MACGRUER FACULTY ENDOWMENT FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Tracy MacGruer Swanson was one of BCD’s most beloved faculty members, having worked at BCD for nearly 30 years (1963-1992).

THE EXPLORATION FUND FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Seeded in 2010, this endowed fund provides annual proceeds to support the professional growth and care for BCD’s faculty. Gifts to the fund ensure that BCD’s faculty can imagine innovation in their practice and invest in ongoing programs designed to enhance, maintain, and refine their competencies. This growth is essential to school improvement and increased student success. Special consideration is given to faculty teams seeking to invest in collaborative learning and/or projects when awarding grants from this fund. PAUL AND SUSAN FRANTZ ENDOWMENT FOR FINANCIAL AID Established in 2012 in honor of long-time BCD faculty and administration members Paul and Susan Frantz, this endowment supports tuition assistance for students who could not otherwise afford a Berkshire Country Day School education. The endowment was created to honor the commitment of these two educators to inspire the promise of each student. THE EUGÉNIE AND JIM FAWCETT FUND FOR FACULTY SALARIES Established in 2014, this fund is named in honor of Eugénie and Jim Fawcett, an outstanding teaching couple at BCD. Eugénie has taught Latin at BCD for 45 years while Jim has taught English at the school for 38 years. The draw on this endowment helps support faculty compensation.
Kapteyn Endowment fully funded! We are excited to share that, thanks to an amazing and transformational gift from the Margaret Kendrick Blodgett Foundation, the James C. Kapteyn Endowment for Environmental Studies is now fully funded! Our science teachers, Tim Gore and Susan Benner, are planning the first annual Kapteyn excursion to the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater in October as part of the Eighth Grade Biology curriculum. We are sincerely grateful to all of the people who created this fund for their vision, passion for our school, deep friendship with Jamie, and generous support of BCD! Look for photos of the trip in the next edition of BCD Today.
