...making connections
During 2017-18 we connected with a new Interim Head of School, Dr. Mark Segar, for this school year, and Head of School, Jenifer Fox, who will join our community in June 2019. Berkshire Country Day School is incredibly fortunate to have found two candidates who bring extraordinary credentials and a perfect fit for our School. Mark has a deep passion for independent education and great enthusiasm for joining the BCD community. Having him in place for a transition year provided us the opportunity to attract Jenifer, who will join us after completing her final year in Arkansas. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to marry Jenifer’s national reputation as an educational leader with our School’s mission and core values. It was also a time of bidding a fond farewell to our longtime Head of School, Paul Lindenmaier, and thanking him for his dedicated service and inspirational leadership. In his decade at BCD, Paul has proven himself a passionate educator whose drive for excellence and care for community have affected every aspect of life at BCD. In that time Paul has led our school and community with his quiet confidence, exceptional leadership, and thoughtful conviction. He will leave this school better and stronger for his time and contributions. Because of Paul’s steadfast competence, BCD has taken great care to plan for BCD’s long term sustainability and innovation, which the students of today and the future will benefit from. Now it is our shared task to look to the future, welcome our new interim head of school and begin a new chapter in the life of our family here at BCD. Mark brings experienced decision-making skills and a unique ‘insider/outsider’ perspective to understanding BCD’s past, its current needs, and its future. As interim head, he will continue to advance the School in preparation for Ms. Fox’s arrival, and they will begin working together throughout the coming year. We all believe this will ensure the smoothest possible transition and the greatest benefit to the School. We look forward to each new head serving as
an ambassador connecting BCD with the regional community and expanding BCD’s impact beyond the campus. Our spring Soiree, Down and Derby, was a huge success, exceeding our goal and connecting faculty, staff, parents, and friends for a fun-filled event that brought in essential income for our financial aid program. I would like to personally thank all those who worked diligently to bring this event together, especially Co-Chairs Ashley Junod, Suzannah Zeif ’84 Van Schaick, and Pieter Van Schaick. As we look to the coming year of new beginnings, we will continue to embrace our School’s mission to inspire each individual child, and continue to be intentional in our approach to providing an exemplary education for our students. Mark adds his own educational philosophy, “I believe that, after family, school is the most powerful social institution we have. In an era when trust in institutions seems to be eroding, it feels more important than ever to work in ways that can sustain and strengthen schools through times of change. I believe that fostering love of learning must be our essential aim. All of us who serve schools must strive to sustain in students a sense of wonder, curiosity, and delight in both discovery and mastery, establishing habits of mind and heart that can make education the work of a lifetime.” Thank you for your continued support and for putting your trust in Berkshire Country Day School. Please stay connected with us throughout the coming year. Sincerely,
Cara Vermeulen President, Board of Trustees

What I like best about BCD is that I get to make closer connections with the teachers and that classes are in different buildings so it doesn't feel like you're crammed up in one building all day. You get to move around. — Bronly Boyd, class of 2022

SIMONS-ROCK.EDU
For 50 years, Bard College at Simon’s Rock has brought the benefits of a liberal arts college education to younger students. Our core philosophy is that many high school students are ready, now, to take on meaningful, serious academic challenges. This guiding principle has earned us a 99% academic rating from the Princeton Review, and 78% of our students go on to graduate study. We also welcome 9th and 10th graders to Bard Academy at Simon’s Rock. Here they pursue an intensive two-year high school curriculum (taught by college faculty) specially designed to prepare them to enter college at Simon’s Rock after the second year. berkshirecountryday.org

BCD Endowments While gifts to the Annual Fund support the education of current students, gifts to the endowment provide for the School’s future. In addition to our general endowment, friends of Berkshire Country Day School have created the following endowments to provide support for BCD. KAPTEYN SCHOLARSHIP The Kapteyn family established this scholarship in 1981 in honor of their parents, Jim and Jancy Kapteyn.
FIFTH DECADE FUND The Fifth Decade Fund was started in 1986 in celebration of BCD’s 40th birthday and the School’s focus on teacher salaries.
ENDOWMENT FOR FACULTY SALARIES Established in 1990, this endowed fund was created to support BCD’s teachers. The draw on this endowment supports faculty compensation, making it an essential resource for BCD’s efforts to attract, hire, and retain exemplary teachers.
DONALD T. OAKES FUND FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND CITIZENSHIP Donald Oakes was BCD’s Head of School from 1958-1968. This fund was created in 2003 by Donald and Betty Oakes on the occasion of Mr. Oakes’ 80th birthday celebration, hosted by BCD. The fund supports prizes given annually to BCD students in recognition of exceptional performance.
TRACY MACGRUER FACULTY ENDOWMENT FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Tracy MacGruer Swanson was one of BCD’s most beloved faculty members, having 14

Kapteyn Endowment for Environmental Studies was created in 2010 by his friends and fellow BCD classmates. Jamie was an inspiring educator, poet, avid fisherman, and lover of rivers. Proceeds from this endowment underwrite a
bi-annual educational experience on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater as part of the Upper School curriculum.
EXPLORATION FUND FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Seeded in 2010, this endowed fund provides annual proceeds to support the professional growth and care for BCD’s faculty. Gifts to the fund ensure that BCD’s faculty can imagine innovation in their practice and invest in ongoing programs designed to enhance, maintain, and refine their competencies.
EMILY REID ’06 O’CONNOR MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT FUND This fund was established in 2011 in memory of Emily following her death from an undiagnosed heart ailment. Funds help provide for the beautification of the campus grounds, such as the area dedicated to Emily.
PAUL AND SUSAN FRANTZ ENDOWMENT FOR FINANCIAL AID Established in 2012 in honor of long-time BCD faculty and administration members Paul and Susan Frantz, who taught at BCD from 1990-2012 and 19962012 respectively. This endowment supports tuition assistance for students who could not otherwise afford a BCD education. The endowment was created to honor the commitment of these two educators to inspire the promise of each student.
Established in 2014, this fund is named in honor of Eugénie and Jim Fawcett, an outstanding teaching couple who have taught at BCD for a combined 83 years. The draw on this endowment helps support faculty compensation and was fully funded in the 2016-17 school year.

EUGÉNIE AND JIM FAWCETT FUND FOR FACULTY SALARIES
Thank You Paul Lindenmaier... After 10 years of intentional leadership. From strengthening the Endowment for Faculty Salaries to building the Kevin Hirt Library and Learning Commons and the Kim and James Taylor Music / Performance Room, Paul’s accomplishments at Berkshire Country Day School are many. His most profound legacy may be the dayto-day stewardship of the philosophy that at BCD, every student is encouraged to grow in a deeply personal way into an exemplary citizen of the world, and that is a legacy we can all honor. With a holistic approach to the day-to-day operations, as well as a bird’s eye view of the long run, Paul focused his leadership on developing the three elements he deemed inseparable at BCD: the people, the program and the place, the “Three P’s”, as he called them. Throughout his tenure, one word seemed to express clearly his motivation: intentional. Whether it was shepherding the capital campaign, restructuring the studio arts program, defining the core message across all school communications, Paul worked tirelessly to make the connections between families, faculty, students, the board, staff, and the entire community. Paul said recently, “During the past ten years, I’ve simply tried to do my best, advance this special school, and in some small ways leave it better than I found it – all with the needs and support of the children first and foremost. It has been my privilege to work with so many talented, smart, creative and dedicated people.” Longtime faculty member, Gill Romano, remarks, “A quote that comes to mind for me when I think about Paul Lindenmaier was written by beloved Winnie the Pooh author A. A. Milne and it reads, ‘The things that make me different are the things that make me, me.’ Throughout Paul’s tenure at BCD, my experience with him has
16

been that he has real respect for each person’s personality and their needs as individuals. I always appreciated the way he listened carefully to what I was saying and would put the situation in perspective. He never dismissed any of my concerns or considered them foolish…For this, I will always be grateful for having the opportunity to work with and for him.” Former board member, alumnus and past parent, Phil Deely ’61 has this to say, “Paul has the unique ability to conceptualize on a high level and, simultaneously, he will do the hard work required to go from concept to reality. Working effectively with a succession of board chairs, Paul helped insure that the board was working on board appropriate matters. Finally, Paul has a presence that inspires confidence in others and leads by example. His leadership has helped BCD navigate all the challenges that face independent schools today.” We thank Paul for his extraordinary 10 years of service after a final year of inspired educational experiences and a robust and healthy close to this year’s Annual Fund.
