Last Sunday, June 17, the Berlin school system graduated 264 students at its high school graduation ceremony at Central Connecticut State University. School administrators said the class left the school with above average SAT and ACT scores and excelling in sport and music competitions. The Berlin graduates sat

Berlin Briefs line said the commercial coffee brewer will sit in the coat rack at the front of the library. “We’re hoping that it will be popular,” she said. While she does not want to compete with bookstores, the installation is part of a wider effort to make the library relevant in the community. She said she hopes the machine will help people linger a little longer in the library. “(It will) certainly make the place smell nice,” Aveline said.

ceive his or her diploma. Before going onstage, their faces were for the most part serious and also calm. By the time students stepped from the stage, they were smiling. Alice Mitchell, the coordinator for the Upbeat program greeted them student as they walked off stage. “Congratulations!” she told most, others received hugs. Then she pointed to a

ATF searched two properties in Berlin By Daniel Jackson The Berlin Citizen

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms searched two properties in Berlin on June 5. In addition to searching the Hawthorne Inn, the ATF searched a warehouse at 1625 Berlin Turnpike, the place where P K Cash and Carry operates. Joseph Squillacote, the manager for the property, said the ATF agents confiscated computers, cigars and other tobacco products from the warehouse. He said P K Cash and Carry does not carry cigarettes. He did not say what the ATF was searching for. “They’re allegations at this time,” he said. The federal government searched the Hawthorne Inn and two residential homes belonging to Syed Imran Bokhari. They took several cars from the residential properties, including a Rolls-Royce. P K Cash and Carry shares building space with two other businesses: GDS Contracting Corp. and Contemporary Furniture Center. Last Thursday, the bay door stood open to 1625 Berlin Turnpike and two men worked at the store helping a customer fill out a piece of paperwork. The store smelled sweet, like a candy store with lol-
lipops, pixie sticks and other candies in jars filled the counter. A large stack of Red Bull cans, Arnold Palmer Arizona Sweet Tea and soda

sat in the middle of the room and the sounds of a Bollywood film came from a TV set in the middle of the store.
When asked about the ATF raid, employees said they were “not authorized to speak about it.” Their employers, they said, were busy settling the case. The employees said their employers contact them every couple days and
they did not have their phone number. The Connecticut records for P K Cash and Carry do not name a proprietor or partners for the business. The company registered with the state last March. Neighbors say it’s a quiet

business. “They don’t really speak to us,” said a man who worked at neighboring business Drive Auto Group and who would only give his name as Craig. An employee at Contemporary Furniture Center said “They don’t know anything about us and we don’t know anything about them,” and refused to comment further. State records list Ramandeep Singh as an agent for P K Cash and Carry. He shares the same home address with the proprietors of the former business that used the space. In May 2008, Liberty Discount registered with the state to operate at 1625 Berlin Turnpike. Records say a Sewa Singh operated as director and president of the company. Sukhdev Singh is listed as the secretary. They share the same residential address, a West Hartford apartment, as Ramandeep Singh. Today, Liberty Discount is dissolved.

Commentary
Great quotes from graduation speeches for the ages Graduation season is upon us. On June 17, Berlin High School joined the many area high schools and colleges that have staged their graduation ceremonies. If you talk to those who have to give a speech at one of these commencement events - the superintendent, valedictorian, salutatorian - they’ll tell you it’s quite a task to hone a short, compelling, memorable talk for the grads and their families. Many will tell you they try to weave at least a little humor into the wisdom they hope to impart. When celebrities or other prominent personalities take the stage at graduation, you can expect the unexpected. In recent years, there have been a number of funny moments during college commencements. Here are a few quotes that surprised and entertained. Russell Baker, Connecticut College, 1995 graduation. “All right, let’s plunge right ahead into the dull part. That’s the part where the commencement speaker tells the graduates to go forth into the world, then gives advice on what to do when they get out there. This is a ridiculous waste of time.

The graduates never take the advice, as I have learned from long experience. The best advice I can give anybody about going out into the world is this: Don’t do it. I have been out there. It is a mess.” Conan O’Brien, Dartmouth College 2011 graduation (former President George H.W. Bush sat behind him on the stage.) “I must point out that behind me sits a highly admired president of the United States and decorated war hero. And I, a cable television talk show host, have been chosen to stand here and impart wisdom. I pray I never witness a more damning example of what is wrong with America today.” The late Steve Jobs, Stanford University 2005 graduation, told the audience that “dropping out of college was the best thing I ever did. “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”
Ellen DeGeneres, Tulane University, 2009 graduation. (She’s a New Orleans native who did not go to college.) “When I was your age, I really thought I knew who I was, but I had no idea. For example, when I was your age, I was dating men.” She joked, “So what I’m saying is, when you’re older, most of you will be gay.” Aaron Sorkin, Syracuse University, 2008 graduation, gave graduates some tough love. “...make no mistake about it, you are dumb. You’re a group of incredibly well-educated dumb people. I was there. We all were there. You’re barely functional. There are some screw-ups headed your way. I wish I could tell you that there was a trick to avoiding the screw-ups, but the screwups, they’re a-coming for y a . ” Stephen Colbert, Knox University, 2006 graduation. “The best career advice I can give you is to get your own TV show. It pays well, the hours are good, and you are famous. And eventually some very nice people will give you a doctorate in fine arts for doing jack squat.”

Hartford Magazine published its annual top Connecticut town article in its June edition with Berlin rated in fifth place in the medium-sized town category and 15th place in a lineup of 30 Connecticut towns. Simsbury was ranked the top medium-sized town and the top town in Connecticut. Berlin also fell behind Avon, Farmington and South Windsor in the medium-sized town category. But Berlin pulled out ahead of the fellow medium-sized towns of Rocky Hill, Windsor, Wethersfield, Bloomfield and Plainville. “Hartford Magazine is finally realizing what we’ve known all these years,” Mayor Adam Salina said. The town has managed to balance open space, recreation, industry and the economy in a smart way, he said. “This was really all about hitting the phones and call-
ing all the towns,” said Jane Dee, the publisher for Hartford Magazine and author of the article. The magazine called every town clerk’s office and asked for basic information about the town such as population, mil rate and education statistics. After all the information was gathered, Paul Bugl, a retired associate professor at the University of Hartford, analyzed the data. The magazine did not factor in crime and deemphasized real estate factors because the economy put a toll on many towns. “It was something they did to refresh the data,” Dee said. Dee said that the magazine doesn’t quite know how people use the article. It’s mostly a fun thing for people to go and look how their town ranks against other towns. “Towns appreciate being a part of it,” she said. Next year, Dee said the
magazine wants to start gathering the data earlier and look at a broader swath of data. She hopes to examine the culture of the towns. For example, she is thinking of having Hartford Magazine look at how many restaurants per square mile and featuring the “up and coming” towns. —Daniel Jackson

After productive spring practice, Redcoat gridders optimistic about 2012 By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
To prepare for the upcoming season, high school football teams in Connecticut are given the choice of holding traditional spring practice, or starting workouts one week early in August. State teams are just about evenly split on the matter. This year, 70 teams went for the spring option, while 75 will convene a week early at summer’s end. Berlin High School football coach John Capodice, for one, prefers getting his troops together in the spring. “Starting earlier (in August); I don’t see any benefit,” said Capodice. “The games don’t start any sooner, it only adds additional practices. The kids like to play the games. I can’t tell you they always like additional practices.” “My thought is we have plenty of times to get ready for the first game within the allotted time frame,” the ninth-year head man added. “The benefit of the spring is we have a chance to get on the field with
Berlin High School football players line up against each other during the annual Red-White game, held June 8 at Scalise Field. the kids, install any new offensive and defensive scheme, get out the kinks before the fall, get all the equipment out. And we finish with a fun game.” Per tradition, the BHS football team caps spring practice with a Red-White game. This
year’s intra-squad battle, held June 8 at Scalise Field, went into overtime. “Both teams were very balanced, and the kids did an outstanding job,” said Capodice. The Red-White game allowed players to shake off
some rust, and fans to get a sneak peak of the 2012 Redcoats. “There was a great crowd,” Capodice said. “We’re real fortunate; in our community people enjoy football, and they come out and support the kids.
Coats’ Notes
Track stars finish strong Berlin High School’s Catherine Voelpel capped a sensational junior season by finishing 37th in the 400 at the track and field nationals this past weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina. This spring, Voelpel lowered her school record in the 400 by more than a second and earned All-New England status. “As a coach, I could not be more proud of how hard Catherine worked this year and the accomplishments she attained,” said BHS coach Steve Soucy. “We set very high goals for the season at the end of last year, and the fact that she was able to reach all of them re-
ally shows how hard she worked.” BHS’s Kate Piotrowicz wrapped up her scholastic career last week with a runner-up finish in the hammer throw competition. The senior’s throw of 117-feet, 8inches improved on her school record. Piotrowicz also owns the school record in discus.
BHS’s Catherine Voelpel and coach Steve Soucy are pictured at the New England track and field competition. From there, Voelpel advanced to nationals.
It was a great turnout for a spring football game.” Fifty-five BHS players participated in spring practice. Capodice is happy with the numbers and the effort he saw. “It was an outstanding spring practice; the coaches, the kids did a wonderful job,” the veteran coach said. “We obviously have an experienced team coming back, and we were able to move along at a rapid pace because we have so much experience.” Capodice likes his team’s chances in the fall. “I think we have a very competitive team, and that’s what we expect here in Berlin,” he said. “I can’t guarantee how many games we’re going to win, but I will guarantee they will work real hard and they will be well-coached.” The Redcoats rolled up a record of 10-2 last season and along the way claimed their third straight Central Connecticut Conference Division III title and qualified for the CIAC Class M state playoffs, where they advanced to the semifinals.

A re-enactment of a Revolutionary War encampment took place on Saturday, June 16, at Kensington Congregation Church in celebration of its 300th anniversary as a church. The event included the recruitment of young volunteers into the Continental Army for some of the interactive events. Re-enactors taught the new recruits the rudimentary skills needed to become a continental soldier.

The show began with African drums: Boom taka taka Ba-boom taka taka. Boom taka boom taka ba-boom taka taka. Then the voices come in. On Sunday, June 10, the Destiny Children’s Choir, a children’s choir that traveled from the Kampala Children’s Centre in Uganda, performed at Wellspring Church. To the untrained, western eye, the children danced traditional African dances, sang in about 7 languages and shared a bit African song and dance to a western audience. But according to the Rev. Arnold Muwonge, international director for the children’s center, everything had meaning in the show—the songs the children sang, the dances, even the details down to the designs on the costumes. When they perform in Uganda, the Ugandans understand the large story that the children tell when they perform their show. “Africans are storytellers,” he said. Their stories turn into songs and their songs lead to dancing, he said. “No African dance doesn’t have a meaning,” Mugwonge said.
As the drums play, the voices join in. Through various languages, lyrics tell the narrative of a child coming to the center. “Where is my mom? Where is my dad?” sings a soloist. “Where, is my mom? Where, is my dad?” In the next song, the choir sings, “We need your prayer/ We need your love/We need your peace/ In Africa.” At one point, the children introduced themselves and told the audience what they want to be when they are older. They range from the ages of 9-years-old to 13. They want to become teachers, pilots, accountants and one bank manager. According to Mugwonge, the nation of Uganda faces an educational crisis. In the country of 35 million people, 50 percent of the population is under the age of 15. He said 2.5 million children are orphaned in the country. Furthermore, war with the Lord’s Resistance Army for 30 years has made parents that have never been educated. “Well, you know, issues are going to develop,” he said. There have been issues of child abuse and neglect in that country, he said. The Kampala Children’s
Center was started with the goal of raising 1,000 children that were orphaned or that came from families that could no longer support them. The center was opened in 2005. Most people know about Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army through the YouTube video titled Kony 2012 produced by Invisible Children, a nonprofit attempting to stop Joseph Kony, the leader of the LRA. To date, the video has more than 90 million hits on YouTube. But Mugwonge has never seen the video. Why does he need to, he said, because he lived through the events. Kony was only a few miles from his home. He likes what Invisible Children has been doing. “I think they are doing an amazing job.” So far, the children are impressed with America. “Even on a warm day, it’s cold,” said Christine, a child from the center. But the people are nice and the food is plentiful. Before coming to the center, “life was no good,” because she didn’t go to school and only ate food once a day. But now, “I have everything that I need,” she said. For more information, visit www.kampalachildren.com.
