BHS’s Bosso is Connecticut’s Teacher of the Year By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen

Earlier this year, Berlin High School social studies teacher (and the district’s 2012 teacher of the year) Dave Bosso told The Citizen,

“I truly love teaching.” That passion was recognized on a statewide level, Oct. 18. During an event at BHS, Department of Education Commissioner Stefan Pryor awarded Bosso the distinction of being the state’s

2012 Teacher of the Year. “Mr. Bosso is a spectacular teacher,” Pryor said. Bosso is “importing ideas from around the world” and bringing these to the classroom where he puts life in Berlin “all within a global context.” Bosso will be recognized again at a Nov. 17 event at the Bushnell for all the state’s top teachers. He is now a candidate for national teacher of the year honors. The BHS event included local and state dignitaries, former district teachers of the year, music from the band and chorus, family and friends, as well as lots of cheering from students. “This is more thrilling than I could have imagined,” Bosso said, his wife Jennifer, also a BHS teacher, at his side. He said the honor “reflects a collective commitment” from the community. Former Superintendent of Schools Richard Paskiewicz, who hired Bosso and current Superintendent of Schools David Erwin, as well as Mayor Adam Salina and Board of Education President Gary Brochu, were among those who spoke at the ceremony. Brochu said, “He reminds

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta with Army Specialist Trevor Gosselin.

Local soldier presents new ideas to defense Secretary Panetta By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen A U.S. Army specialist, who hails from Kensington, recently had the honor of presenting a new language initiative to a fourstar general and then to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. Specialist Trevor Gosselin, a 2003 Berlin High School graduate, has been taking Dari classes at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monteray, Calif. Dari, in contemporary use, refers to the dialects of modern Persian language spoken in Afghanistan, and the term officially recognized by the Afghan government. Dari is the most widely spoken language in Afghanistan. Gosselin also has been giving presentations to the military about changing the way languages are

taught at the language institute. “The presentation itself was about new technology being used and piloted in language acquisition, like smart boards and tablet laptops,” he said. Gosselin was among five soldiers and one Marine who recently made several presentations to a variety of leadership in the armed services, the last two to Gen. Robert Cone who is in charge of Training and Doctrine for the Army and the Secretary of Defense. In August, Cone visited students attending Dari classes at the language institute. Later, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta wanted to hear first-hand about the program, which represents an investment of millions of dollars, from the soldiers-in-training. That’s when Gosselin, and See Soldier, page 4

Medical center Volunteers provide invaluable assistance and support to all areas of MidState Medical Center. Volunteers are needed in the nursing units to assist patients with meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner time. Special training is provided for those accepted into this special “Meal Mates” volunteer program. There is also high demand for volunteers in our newly expanded Emergency Department in both clinical and non-clinical areas. Book Cart volunteers visit patients daily, offering free books and magazines as well as friendly conversation. These volunteers are also trained as “Fall Prevention Safety” volunteers who check bed and chair alarms to ensure they are in proper working order and encourage the patient to use the call button to “call before you fall”. Patients at MidState are treated to relaxing “Soft Touch” hand rubs and foot rubs by well-trained MidState volunteers. If you are interested in this very spe-

Before heading off to college last summer, the members of Girl Scout Troop 6083 planted a “Liberty Tree” in the center circle surrounded by the gardens they had established in years past at McGee Middle School. After 13 years of scouting together, and numerous community service projects, they felt the need to leave a legacy to the town of Berlin. VNA HealthCare Hospice volunteers play an important role in terms of being directly involved in patient care. Volunteers perform tasks such as staying with a patient so the family can take a break, providing companionship to hospice patients and their caregivers, running errands for a patient and/or family members, providing administrative office support among other things. Training classes are available for those interested in becoming a hospice volunteer. The goal of the training is to help define the role of a hospice volunteer, and it covers the history and philosophy of hospice, team building, help with communicating effectively, ways to manage death, dying, and bereavement, and concepts of spirituality.

Giovanna Berardozzi opened Kensington Dry Cleaners, fourteen years ago and couldn’t be happier with the support and business she has received from the community. Being able to successfully apply all of her skills as a seamtress and cleaner in her own business has been a dream come true for her, and has given her, her husband, Cirillo, and her daughters, Lina and Sabrina the chance to make many new friends. She named the business Kensington Dry Cleaner because she believes that businesses should take part in promoting a strong, healthy community for our children. You see, Giovanna’s first priority and most demanding job is caring for her husband, five children and three grandchildren. The business is a full service cleaner, and one of the services that Giovanna, Lina and Sabrina are most proud of is their wedding gown restoration process. Birders contest

The Celebrate Urban Birds project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology has launched a contest to capture memorable encounters with birds. The goal is to show some of the ways birds interact with each other, with humans, or with other creatures. Entries can be in the form of a story, a photo, artwork, video, poetry, sculpture or any other creative art. Participants just need to show birds interacting in fun, interesting, or captivating ways. “For example, you might see a House Sparrow trying to grab a sandwich at the park,” says project leader Karen Purcell. “Maybe a crow is teasing your dog or hummingbirds are dueling over who gets dibs on the nectar feeder. That’s the sort of close encounter we’d like to see.” Email entries to urbanbirds@cornell.edu. If you submit a video, post it on YouTube and send the link. Deadline for entries is Nov. 15. Only one entry per person. For complete details, visit www.birds.cornell.edu/celebration/challenge/close-encounters.

To the editor: Mayor Salina said that he has always made the ‘right decision’ on what is best for the Town of Berlin. If this is true, why were so many of his ‘right decisions’ vetoed by the townspeople? Remember the $83 million high school, the $5 million land purchase, and the automated garbage debacle? Why did he not sign petitions for referendum votes? Was the ‘right decision’ to ignore the townspeople? The real right decision is to put David Evans and his fellow Republicans in charge. To the editor: I read in The Berlin Citizen recently that Councilwoman Karen Drost chose not to run again for council. She said she hoped the bickering and arguing would end with the next council. In the same paper, Councilor Morelli said she mistook arguing and bickering for criticism. I was at a council meeting when Drost suggested tabling a motion when Morelli went up one side of her and down the other. When he got through, Councilor Dacey repeated what he had said. I was so disgusted, I have not been to council meetings since. I think criticism is lawyer

The Santa Run is more family oriented and gifts and food for those in need in Berlin. I also was an EMT with the Kensington Volunteer Ambulance (now defunct). It was a very rewarding experience and it was sad when it was disbanded as town changed to professional paid ambulance service. I am a member of the Republican Committee that has fostered my desire to become more active in the politics of

Rochette Continued from page 6 Meriden; Griswold Elementary School, and United Way. Recap a council meeting where a public discussion you participated in changed the course of events (i.e. helped the public understand an issue; stopped an argument, helped an individual with an issue.) Recently, the town updated an ordinance regarding Junked, Wrecked and Abandoned property. At the town hearing, several residents spoke regarding specific language in the ordinance that could result in an unintended adverse effect. They were able to articulate why they felt changes to the language in the ordinance were needed as well as provide suggestions for those changes. The council listened to these individuals and taking into consideration both the needs of the town and the individuals

Berlin. My prior work has given me an in-depth understanding of the community. Working with the budget has fine-tuned my understanding of balanced budget. Town people must live within their budget so should the Town. How many town meetings did you attend this year and what did you learn? I have attended approximately four meetings this year and found them less than educational. The majority (Democrats) frequently drops their civility when talking to the minority (Republicans). Some speakers at the podium and in the audience were treated with less respect than they deserved. I decided to use a different method of keeping up with the working of the Town Council and used the published meetings to follow the proceedings and the television if I wanted more on time information. Through this method I was able to develop patterns and practices and keep abreast of the

workings of the Town Council. There are several instances of waived bidding some for sums greater than the restriction 20,000 stated in the Town Charter “for the good of the town” and the regular use of leasing for items that the increase the cost. It shows a regular pattern of not being able to wait until funds are available. I will be attending the Town Council meeting to obtain current workings of the present Town Council. What do you think is the purpose of politics and why do you want to participate? I consider politics as a form of community service. The spending practices are getting out of hand and must stop. People are having a rough time in Berlin. The unemployment rate is seven percent in Berlin. Many people that are working lost a day’s pay with Governor Malloy’s retroactive tax. Thus, the Republican’s stance is: Grow business not taxes.

who spoke, redrafted and passed an ordinance that was better then the first. To truly be a successful member of the Town Council, communication is key. The ability to discuss with the residents of Berlin why a decision is being made and to hear their feedback about possible impacts, ensures that I make the right choices for the continued success of Berlin. In regards to casting a vote on an issue, explain how you come to a decision using these three criteria: listening to residents; following your conscience; supporting the objectives of your political party. Most people I speak with live in Berlin because of its small town, community-focused environment. We live here to educate our children in a good school system and to enjoy the services the town provides. We don’t live in Berlin because of decisions made by a political party. When casting a vote, I do

so as a member of this community not as a member of the Democratic Party. With each vote, I want to ensure that the services the town provides and the decisions made by the Town Council continue to enhance our lives and do not become a financial burden for those who live here. My decisions are based on information provided by experts on the subject, both town employees and consultants if they are involved, the impact to the town; financially, economically and socially, and how the decision fits in with the long terms goals and visions of Berlin. Resident input is valuable and is always taken into consideration when provided. While some votes have a more obvious impact to residents, such as the budget or large capital expenditures, each vote goes through the same process. To not do so, would be a disservice to all who live in Berlin.

This is part of the process that our Town Charter has set forth and allows for adequate debate and open discussion in order to assist in making decisions that benefit the town of Berlin as a whole. Rugged schedule on tap in second half By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

With one loss already on its record, the Berlin High School football team will have to navigate a minefield if it is to qualify for the state playoffs for the seventh time in eight years. Waiting in the wings in the second half of the season are four plus-.500 squads — Plainville (3-2), Platt (3-2), Bloomfield (4-1) and New Britain (3-2). The young Redcoats dropped to 4-1 Friday with a 20-3 Homecoming loss to Northwest Catholic. “I think we’ve got to go one at a time,” BHS coach John Capodice said of the upcoming stretch. “We have Rockville (1-4) next, and then we start playing some really, really competitive teams to finish the season. We have to find a way to win, and keep competing.”

Capodice said the Northwest Catholic matchup gave his troops a taste of what lies ahead this fall. The game, played in soggy conditions, was a 3-3 affair until the fourth quarter. There, Northwest Catholic (41) stopped Berlin on fourthand-short in Redcoat territory, and took the lead for good on the ensuing drive. The visiting Indians then capitalized on two Berlin turnovers to ice things. “We’re a young team, and we knew coming in that we’re going to have to take some risks in order to get the reward. In this type of game, you’ve got to take some chances,” Capodice said, referring to the fourth-andshort situation. “The kids had confidence, and the seniors wanted to really get after it and finish it. Unfortunately it didn’t go our way.” The Redcoats took a 3-0

Northwest Catholic evened things in the third, setting the stage for a dramatic final frame. “I knew coming in it was going to be a very, very com-

petitive game, and that it could be a field goal game,” said Capodice. “They’re a veteran team. They had 19 kids returning. We had two returning. I knew coming into the game what we were in for, what it would take. The margin of

error was very, very small. “The thing that was encouraging was that the kids went toe to toe with a veteran team and competed hard … It basically came down to one play.” At midseason, Berlin quarterback Mitch Williams has completed 57 of his 102 pass attempts for 855 yards and seven touchdowns. He has been intercepted six times. Justin Gombotz leads the Redcoat ground attack with 318 rushing yards and six TDs. Tommy Undercuffler has generated 290 yards rushing, and run for three scores. Also, Undercuffler has made 18 receptions, two for touchdowns. Scott McLeod is another favorite target of Williams. McLeod has 16 catches and three TDs. On the other side of the

As far as the Berlin High School boys soccer team is concerned, simply qualifying for the state tournament is not a cause for celebration. Last year, the Redcoats advanced all the way to the Class L semifinals, and the locals plan to make a similar run this fall. “There’s a bunch of Class L teams that have only one or two losses, and I’ve seen some of those teams play … They’re good teams, but they’re beatable teams. I think we can compete with any of them,” said BHS coach Dave Francalangia, whose charges punched their ticket to the state tournament Oct. 13. “We’re a tight-knit group, and everybody wants to do well. They have a little bit of a chip on their shoulder as well. A lot of coaches and players around the state didn’t think we’d be playing this well. People thought we might be around .500 and stumble into the tournament.” But Francalangia and his guys refused to accept that fate. “I told them ‘this is your year, and you make what you want of it.’ They’ve been doing a heck of a job,” the veteran coach said.

It’s the stretch run for the Berlin High girls volleyball team. At 6-7 heading into this week, the Redcoats must win three of their last five matches to qualify for the state tournament, and three of five to finish with a .500 record. “At the beginning of the season I hoped to qualify for the Central Connecticut Conference South playoffs,” said BHS coach Bob Tarigo. “But we won’t do that. I think that if we get to .500, that would be a successful season.” Tarigo’s team has had its share of tough luck. The Redcoats’ No. 2 hitter from last season was set to have a big senior year, but Victoria Fagan is injured and hasn’t played at all. Another of Tarigo’s hitters, Meghan

D.J. Caron, No. 10, has given the Berlin High School boys soccer team an added boost this season. Heading into this week, the Redcoats owned a record of 6-3-2. A team must win at least 40 percent of its 16 regular season games in order to qualify for the state tournament. See Redcoats, next page

Long, went down with an ankle injury against Bristol Central last week and will miss at least a week. “We’ve been hurt by injuries, but the other girls have stepped up,” said Tarigo. “Still, the right word for us this season has been ‘inconsistency’. There are times we play very well, then there are other times we make mistakes. We really have had too many unforced errors.” He went on to describe the recent loss to Bristol Central to make his point. After winning the first game 25-12, his club lost three straight, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-17. “We lost the second and third games by seven points, but we made unforced errors that gave them 21 points,” said TariSee Volleyball, page 21

Coats’ Notes

The Berlin High School cross country teams ended the regular season in style last week. The BHS girls topped Middletown, 16-47, while the Berlin boys edged Middletown, 24-31. The Lady Redcoats were led by Kaylene Sylvain, Brittany Sullivan, Nicole Grieco, Paige Young, Alex Carbonell, Kristen Madeia and Nicki Sylvain. James Dwyer, Matt Kall

and Will Cavedon paced the BHS boys. The Redcoats’ usual No. 1, Brendan McLarty, was fighting a cold that day and faded late. “The race at that point was very close and could have gone either way,” Berlin coach Steve Soucy pointed out. “The rest of the boys picked it up, just as Brendan has done for them throughout the season.”

The BHS cross country teams were slated to compete in the Central Connecticut Conference South Division championship Wednesday at Wickham Park in Manchester. The Berlin boys were looking to finish no worse than third at the event. The BHS girls had much higher hopes — the CCC South title. The Lady Redcoats would have to beat CCC South pow-

go. “However, that match showed improvement because in our first match with Central, they wiped us out. This time we were competitive. If we can cut down our mistakes, we can be competitive with everyone.” Tarigo singled out several players for their contributions to the team. “Our most consistent players have been Lia D’Amato and Rachael Zelek,” the veteran coach said. “They have been steady for us all year.” D’Amato serves at an 88 percent rate and she has 128 service receptions, 195 digs and 58 kills. Zelek is serving at 96 percent, with 48 service receptions, 134 digs and 112 assists.

3: Amy Kuckel led Berlin’s offense, along with Lea Cabral and Emma Norton. Berlin Boltz 8, Portland 1: Lexi Martino scored two goals, one from 25 yards out, as Berlin rolled. The Boltz Niah Samboy netted her first goal. Berlin Boltz 5, Wethersfield 0: The Boltz broke a scoreless tie with five goals in the second half. Berlin Boltz 5, Bristol 2: Rebecca Mayer and Hailey Nardelli scored two goals each and Sierra Villella added one to power Berlin. Lexi Martino and Amy Kuckel controlled the midfield for the Boltz while the defense was led by Maria Butrimas, Nikki Baedor, Marta Mazurek, Hannah Smolicz and Lily Sokolowski. Berlin Boltz 3, Manchester 0: Demry Gdovin’s goal broke a scoreless tie midway through the second half. Berlin Boltz 9, West Hartford 4: In a shoot-out, Berlin got two goals apiece from Rebecca Mayer, Amy Kuckel and Emma Norton. Berlin Boltz 6, Somers 1: Amy Kuckel and Niah Samboy led the offense and Hailey Nardeli set up three goals as Berlin cruised. The Boltz goaltending group of Kaitlin DeCamp, Olivia Smith, Lily Sokolowski, Kelly Brett and Julia Daddario has been solid.

Tarigo also singled out MacKenzie Freeland (76 kills), Kelly Walsh (32 kills, 53 service receptions, 74 digs), Brittany Labbadia (21 kills, 106 digs, 76 service receptions) and Alicia Maule (135 assists). “Overall we serve at 87 percent,” said Tarigo. “I would like that to be higher, but as I have said to the girls, it’s not so much the percentage you make, it’s when you make a bad one. Our problem overall is, as I said, inconsistency.” In their most recent match, the Redcoats beat Conard of West Hartford 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 26-24). Update: The road to the state tournament got a little tougher for Berlin. The Lady Redcoats fell to Bristol Eastern 3-1 Monday night.

Leaf collection scheduled The Berlin Public Works Department has scheduled curbside leaf collection for residents’ trash days during the weeks of Oct. 31 through Nov. 4, Nov. 14 through 18, and Nov. 28 through Dec. 2. Leaves must be in biodegradable brown paper bags and left at the curb on regular trash day. Trash barrels or other containers may also be used. (The containers will be emptied and put back at the curb.) Purchased leaf bags and alternate leaf containers must be clearly marked “leaves”. Plastic bags are not permitted. Keep all leaf bags and leaf containers away from the automated trash container. Grass clippings, yard waste and twigs cannot be mixed with leaves. Do not rake leaves into the gutter. This is a violation of the anti-litter ordinance, and subject to a fine. To dispose of leaves, residents also may bring them to 19 Town Farm Lane (off Massirio drive), Monday through Friday, between 7:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.; and Saturdays Oct. 22 through Nov. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All bags and containers must be emptied and removed from the drop-off area inside the Recycle Center. The drop-off area will be closed Friday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 24, Thanksgiving Day, and Friday, Nov. 25.
