This is Main Street — a quiet revival in Kensington By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen
The idea of Main Street is as American as baseball and apple pie. It’s an iconic image in every form of American art. It was a “main” character in Sinclair Lewis’ satirical novel. As a term widely used to describe the primary street in any town or village, Main Street can be conceptual or real. Main Street, Kensington, is both. (There’s also a Main Street in East Berlin that is predominantly residential.) About seven-tenths of a mile from start to finish, it’s a mix of commercial and residential. Main Street, Kensington is also a community of people who take their place there seriously. Being on Main Street “has a certain ring to it,” said Mike Jeske, owner of Jeske’s Catering Services, 380 Main St. His site has long been associated with food services as it once housed Grand Central Restaurant. “There’s some nostalgia here when some of the old-timers come in.” Eileen Clark refers to Main

Clark owns Echo Consignment, 355 Main St. “The shop owners are all very friendly. We all go to each other’s shops. Sometimes we’re out there sweeping the sidewalk, waving hello.” Echo Consignment opened July 1. Clark checked out a few possible spots for her clothing store before deciding the Main Street location was the best fit. “I really
liked the village atmosphere of Main Street,” she said. “And I could see that they were doing renovations to the street. I liked that it was improving.” The southernmost corners of Main Street are anchored by Mommy and Me and Dairy Queen. At the north end is the Lofts at Sherwood Falls. Just considering these key sites, the idea that a revival is underway seems logical. Within the last couple of years; Mommy and
Me has expanded with a new department Lazy Daisies Furniture and Gifts. DQ has grown as well, with a seasonal outdoor patio overlooking the downtown crossroads of Main and Farmington Avenue. The Kensington-Berlin YMCA has upgraded its facility. And at 1 Main St., the
Sherwood Falls project has taken a derelict old mill and turned it into stylish housing all the while preserving an historic landmark building. Town Manager Denise McNair said this small section of town has “huge value” and along with Farmington Avenue creates a commercial hub that will be further bolstered as commuter services are more fully developed. Furthermore, Kensington’s Main Street has the potential to expand along an axis that

Henning, who does business as Schall & Staub, said he is the only stone carver in New England producing these sorts of sculptures and restorations. His work on the mansion began in 2007 when he crafted the board, curved

Now this Worthington Ridge stone carver has attended a Nov. 23 ceremony, to unveil his latest sculptures, at the Victoria Mansion in Portland, Maine. Christoph Henning has worked on recreating portions of the massive stone staircase at the mansion for the past three years. In doing so, he has used stone mined from the Portland, Conn. quarry. The quarry was the source for all the brownstone used by the original builders of the mansion which is listed as a National Historic Landmark property. The mansion was designed in the mid-19th century by Henry Austin, a New Haven architect. Henning explained that shipping the brownstone from Portland, Conn., using access to the Connecticut

New era kicks off at the Hawthorne Inn The Hawthorne Inn rolled out the red carpet for guests Nov. 18 at a “meet and greet� event to introduce the restaurant’s new management team. Welcoming community leaders and friends of the restaurant was new owner Syed Bokhari and general Manager Donna Esposito. Sharon Ritone, banquet manager, is also part of the man-
agement team. “I want to thank Syed for putting this restaurant back in order,� Esposito said. Her brief remarks to the crowd of about 100 guests was the only formality during the social event. Bokhari did not make public comments. The landmark property at 2421 Berlin Turnpike changed hands Aug. 23 when the Grelak family sold it to
Syed Sons II, Inc., a business incorporated April 23. The crowd was treated to an eleaborate buffet and appetizers. Souled Out, a Motown tribute band, was the entertainment. — Olivia L. Lawrence

The Berlin Senior Center was among the 10 percent of voting precincts that were part of a post-election manual audit under the direction of Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz. The Berlin audit took place Nov. 19, all au-
dits were required to be completed by Nov. 22. Bysiewicz said “Record numbers of Connecticut residents cast ballots on Nov. 2 and we don’t just take the machines’ word for it.” Sites, to be audited, were randomly selected Nov. 15. In celebration of Breast Cancer Month, St. Paul School completed its first annual walka-thon recently. Sponsored by the student council, the event was led by teachers Julie Cranick and Michelle Carini. Students raised over $3,400 for the American Cancer Society. On the day of the walk, 81 students, teachers and parents walked around the St. Paul complex nine times to complete three miles, as did other charity walks in the area.

25th class reunion to help classmate’s ailing daughter By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen Berlin High School class of 1985 will get together Nov. 27 for all the usual fun and fanfare such reunions demand. However, the class also will be doing some serious fundraising to help out one of their own. Wendy Bellissimo (given name Jarmolinski, of the Kensington Furniture family) is struggling with the demands of a critically ill child. “Wendy knew so many people and we knew people would want to help,” said Kathy Bernard, who is helping to organize the fundraising. She said the reunion committee is tryng to get the word out to the community at large in hopes of getting more donations. Bellissimo, who now lives in California, has four young daughters. Eight year-old Cecilia Anne Bellissimo, also known as “Butterfly”, has been diagnosed with a rare cancer that has a 60 percent survival rate. According to a newsletter from the Talbert Family Foundation that is assisting “Team Cecilia”, after long and painful months of being misdiagnosed, Cecilia’s parents were told their daughter had a five centimeter mass under her left cheekbone in the pterygoid muscle extending up into her cranium and down into her nasal cavity. The mass was believed to be rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft tissue cancer that needed to
be treated immediately with a long program of chemotherapy and daily radiation. The family was devastated by the news and it has been difficult for parents and the four sisters. Cecilia was described as a “vibrant, sweet and caring little girl” who loves school, singing, guitar, acting, art, animals, nature, riding her bike and swimming — and, of course, her family and many friends. Cecilia went from a healthy 64 pounds to 47 pounds and is currently in a wheel chair. While she remains weak, Cecilia is making progress. According to the foundation newsletter, radiation to the face and brain is extremely difficult to endure and Cecilia received the maximum dose that a human can tolerate. It is expected that there will be side effects due to the radiation that will affect her developing facial structure and that surgery will be needed. The Bellissimo family sends their heartfelt thanks for all of the love, support and prayers they have received since learning of Cecilia’s cancer. McNair said, “Businesses were affected by the bridge work, but the construction has created a better gateway to town.” She recalled that there was criticism about the cost of some enhancements. “The crosswalks cost a little more than the standard version, but the investment was well worth it for our Main Street,” McNair said, calling the results “lovely.” Mommy and Me/Lazy Daisies owner Sally Eigenraam has been at the 384 Main Street location for nearly 15 years. “Main Street is really starting to come back, all the leases are filled. The area is really walk-able, you can
shop and walk and there’s a community feel…As we head into Christmas season, I would encourage people to shop along a Main Street instead of going on the internet. It’s such a different experience, a human experience of talking to someone and having them wrap items for you. That’s what Main Street America is about and hopefully we’re going to have a comeback.” The Lofts at Sherwood Falls will contribute more than 70 households to the area. Project developer CIL CEO and President Martin Legault said “One of the things that attracted us to the site was its location. It’s a super location. The options and opportunities for people living there are many — it’s a great location.” Jeske’s Restaurant, which started out as a popular new

DUI enforcement program
The Berlin Police Department has obtained a grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Division to support increased DUI detection and enforcement efforts. This enforcement program will run from Thanksgiving 2010 through Labor Day 2011. DUI patrols are scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday nights on selected dates and times during the coming year. The patrols will target DUI operation but will also enforce any other violations observed during the course of this operation. A DUI sobriety checkpoint is scheduled for the evening of Nov. 27 on the Berlin Turnpike in the area of Middletown Road.

The Berlin-Kensington YMCA is accepting registrations for the 26th annual Tinsel Fun Run, a two-mile fun run scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. at the former
Knights of Columbus building, 143 Percival Ave. The divisions are male and female, 10 and under; 1113; 14-18; 19-25; 26-33; 34-41; 4249; 50-59; 60-69; 70 and over; and a family division that consists of one runner in the family under 19 years old
with a parent or guardian. Trophies are awarded to the top three finishers, in each category and the top three Berlin residents. Holiday costumes are encouraged. Participants in costume may register to win a gift certificate. All runners

The Berlin Citizen has distribution boxes for the weekly newspaper at two locations in town: at Connecticut Tire, 96 Webster Square Road (across from Powerhouse Gym) and on Brook Street, next to the U.S. Post Office in Kensington. This is in addition to the regular mailed home delivery. There is no charge for the newspaper at these boxes. proved. Clark concurred and said the only downside to Main Street is that shortage of parking spots. “Parking is the biggest drawback…Otherwise, I love it,” she said. Traveling north along the road, there’s Sal’s Gold Shop with a couple of apartments above the street level commercial. A former manager with Sherwood Tool, Memery now owns and operates Main Street Package Store which overlooks the dam at Paper Goods Pond. One of her philosophies is to do “anything to help” the local community. Memery said her hope is “just to make a living.” While she and her husband would like to fix-up the building, this is not the right time, with the economy as it is. However, she is hiring help and within a couple of years plans to move forward with improvements. Like many other shopkeepers, Memery said she net-
works with her business neighbors and sends customers to the deli, garage and gift shops along Main Street. She’d like to see the town do more to help small businesses, as well. Eigenraam agreed. She’s asked the town how the grant for beautification for Farmington Avenue and Main Street will help her area. “This street would benefit from streetlamps,” Eigenraam said. While the new crosswalks and brick work on the street are “very attractive and add charm”, she would like to see the street have plantings and gardens similar to what garden clubs have done around town. It has its own nook.” Her site was once the location of St. Paul Church and
she feels connected to the history of the spot. Tonina operates the garage office as something of an informal community center. “People are great, if they need anything we’re here.” Each summer, she puts out free produce for visitors to take. McNair also talked about the value of communitystrengthening activities. She
recalled that “There used to be a Yankee Peddler Fair and the street was closed down for the event… (And more recently) the scarecrow festival is a bright light of community fun.” Clark said the town has been “very business-friendly” and officials are easy to work with. However, she’d like to see some town-spon-
sored events come to Main Street “like Christmas on Main Street, or a Fourth of July block party,” she said. “I wish that the town would do a little bit more. Even if it required blocking off the street for a few hours, I think it would be so worth it.”

Connecticut Main Street Center is an organization that helps towns revitalize their main street districts as part of the National Main Street network. The goal is to bring commercial districts back to life, socially and economically. About 40 Connecticut towns are members; Berlin is not, at this time.
With more traffic, old buildings torn down, and historic charm and pedestrian access lost, many downtowns have struggled since their heyday more than half a century ago. But the Main Street Center states that there is a movement to reclaim its economic position in the community. In looking at some of the organization’s goals, it is clear that Kensington’s Main Street has many of the elements needed for success.
The Main Street organization suggests that a vibrant downtown begins with cooperation among stakeholders. It also advises improving the image of the area through retail promotions, special events and branding. Enhancing the social value of the area will increase its economic value. The Main Street Center encourages improving appeal through new construction and rehabilitation of historic and under-utilized
buildings. Public spaces for walking and gathering are also important. More diversity of businesses will also increase the value of downtown. Recommendations on how to spark a revitalization effort include many ideas for ways to capitalize on the street’s best assets and these can be seen at MainStreet.org website. Everybody loves a winner. Berlin High School boys soccer coach Dave Francalangia said his inbox was never empty during the Redcoats’ recent historic state tournament run. “The response has been just huge. It’s been great,” he said. “I can’t tell you how many emails I got in the past week; probably two- three-hundred e-mails.” Not surprisingly, as Berlin progressed through the CIAC Class L state tournament, its fan base grew. Last week, a huge crowd traveled to Pomperaug to see the Redcoats compete in the program’s first-ever state tournament semifinal. “It is nice to get a little recognition for what these boys have done,” Francalangia said. “Seeing the crowd, and the stands completely packed, it was an awesome feeling … When you look back at the stands, you can see the support there. And I think it encourages your guys to do a heck of a lot more.” After knocking off Torrington, Bacon Academy and
Wilton in the first three rounds, Berlin’s wild state tournament ride came to an end Nov. 17 in the semifinals. The 13th seed Redcoats fell to undefeated top seed BunnellStratford, 2-1, that night. After 100 minutes of action — regulation and two overtime periods — the game came down to penalty kicks, where Bunnell prevailed, 8-6. “All of the kids worked extremely hard throughout the course of the first half, second half, OT. They gave it their all. They left everything out on the field,” Francalangia said. “You don’t want to look back 10, 15 years down the road and say to yourself ‘what could have been? Could I have worked harder?’ And I don’t think they’re going to have to do that.” Francalangia regrets the Bunnell game was decided on penalty kicks. He wished the teams had settled things 11 on 11. “Penalty kicks are unfortunate,” he said. “But it’s a way for a team to advance ... One team was going to have some heartbreak, unfortunately.” Bunnell went on to lose to See Coach, page 23
The Berlin High School football team has generated some gaudy numbers this year. Through nine games, the undefeated Redcoats scored 363 points, while putting up 40 or more seven times. With numbers like that, it’s not surprising the Berlin backfield has received lots of fanfare. And it deserves the praise. But BHS coach John Capodice knows his team’s success offensively would not be possible without a strong line. “I always say we’ll go as far as the offensive line takes us. Any championship team, the guys up front make that team go,” said Capodice, who pointed out a lot goes into making a good lineman. “You have to be intelligent. You have to have some size. Speed and quickness also plays a role. You also have to be physical. There’s contact.” Berlin’s offensive line includes seniors Mason Powers, Joe Dellaquila, Dan Hogan and Mike Perno and sophomore Mitch Blanchette. Seniors Chris

Capodice said the Redcoat backfield appreciates the yeoman’s work done by the linemen. In fact, the school’s all-time rushing leader, Max DeLorenzo, has taken the linemen out to eat. His treat. “The kids all enjoy one another,” Capodice said. “It’s all part of that team unity.” Berlin’s O-Line is overseen by a group of driven
coaches. “They do a terrific job motivating the guys, getting them to play at a high level, turning them into technicians,” Capodice said. The Redcoat defensive line has been impressive as well this fall. Aresimowicz, Hogan, Dellaquila, Perno and Blanchette comprise the D-line. “The group has done a good job stopping the run. Solid showing for swim team The young Berlin High School girls swim team generated 189 points and finished ninth at the CIAC Class M state championships. Swim events were held last week at Wesleyan University. The diving competition took place Nov. 10. The Lady Redcoats’ biggest point-getter at the Class M event was Briana Cass. The junior placed 13th in the 50 freestyle (:26.57) and 19th in the 100 freestyle (:58.04). Also, she was a member of two Top 10 relay teams. Berlin’s best finish in relays — eighth — was registered by its 200 freestyle team. The foursome of Cass, Kate Piotrowicz, Taylor Recck and Shannon Jedrzejczyk clocked a time of 1:47.55.
Cass, Piotrowicz and Jedrzejczyk teamed with Megan Pitkin in the 400 freestyle relay and finished ninth (3:56.39). Jedrzejczyk was the lone senior to compete for the Lady Redcoats that day. Berlin’s other individual Top 20 finishes in Class M were registered by Joanna Wojtun (16th, 100 breaststroke, 1:17.96; 20th, 200 individual medley, 2:32.36), Katherine Burek (18th, 100 breaststroke, 1:16.69), Piotrowicz (14th, 50 freestyle, :26.59) and Leah Pawelczyk (15th, diving, 250.25). Local karate student a world champion By Jeffery Kurz Special to The Citizen
Rebecca Cote has been notching a lot of victories to go with her second-degree black belt in Tang Soo Do karate, none as significant as the World Cup championship she captured this summer. Rebecca, an eighth grader at Washington Middle School in Meriden, swept three gold medals in the Tang Soo Do Karate World Championship, held in Greensboro, N.C., in July, which gave her the youth female championship. The tournament draws about 1,700 competitors from around the globe. Rebecca, who grew up in Berlin and trains in town at Valentin Karate, is the first competitor from Connecticut, of either gender or any age group, to have won since the tournament started in 1986. Rebecca’s championship was in the 13- to 16-year-old category, even more impressive because she just turned 13 in March. “She’s not the one I would have thought would be the first,” said Efrain Valentin, the master instructor at Valentin Karate, where Rebecca has trained since she
was 5 years old. Rebecca’s success is a story of perseverance and attitude, said Valentin, who noted that there have been a number of gifted students to come through his school. The school sent 82 students to the competition, which is held every other year. “It’s not all about the winning, that’s not what we’re most proud of,” he said. “At school, she carries herself with respect and courtesy, and that’s the mark of a true champion.” Rebecca said she was surprised by her victory, because “there were a lot of really good girls,” and chalks it up to the power of positive thinking. Before the tournament, she asked her father if he thought she had to potential to win, “and he said if everything went right I would,” she recalled. “So every day I would tell my dad that I’m going to win the World Cup.” Rebecca is the only child of Tom and Leslie Cote. Tom Cote works independently as a Web designer, while Leslie Cote is an art teacher at the Savin Rock Community School, in West Haven. A friend of Tom Cote’s had a girlfriend who held a black
belt in karate. One day, she demonstrated by launching a kick to within an inch of Cote’s face. “And I thought, ‘If I ever have a daughter, she’s going to learn karate,’” Cote recalled. Thus, Rebecca started at an early age. She wasn’t always as enthusiastic about karate as she is now, but says she grew out of her apprehension. She reached the

Wedding Puzio-Meagher Isabel Bozena Puzio, daughter of Stan and Lila Puzio of Berlin, and Douglas Joseph Meagher, son of Don and Susan Meagher of Kensington, were married June 26, 2010 at Holy Cross Church in New Britain by family friend, Rev. Darek Gosciniak. The bride was given in marriage by her father, Stan Puzio. Dorothy Foster, the bride’s sister and best friend, was the matron of honor. The bridesmaids included Christina Meagher, sister of
the groom; as well as Stephanie Guminiak, cousin of the bride; and Marissa Casorio, Kim Gerdis, and Rebecca Hans. The bride’s cousins Anabella Cartiera and Katrina Chorzepa served as flower girls. Christopher LaRosa, friend of the groom, was the best man. The groomsmen included Christopher Puzio, brother of the bride; Michael Kastorf, cousin of the groom; Matt Guminiak, cousin of the bride; and Dan Schreiner, friend of the groom. The bride’s nephew, Cody Puzio, was
the ring bearer. The wedding reception was held at The Glastonbury Hills Country Club in Glastonbury, and the couple honeymooned in Hawaii. The bride and groom are 2003 Berlin High School graduates. The bride is employed by Glastonbury Public Schools as a high school English teacher. The groom is employed by Connecticut Online Computer Center of Avon as a Systems Administrator.

The attorney general’s race and races for the Connecticut State Senate, were chosen at random in the audit drawing. The provisions in the law, developed in close cooperation with the computer science department at the University of Connecticut, give Connecticut one of the strictest audit statutes in the country. Connecticut is the first state in New England to require a comprehensive audit of election results. Local registrars of voters conduct the audit. The manual audit is open to public observation. The results of audits will be analyzed by the University of Connecticut and then presented to the Secretary of the State’s Office and the State Elections Enforcement Commission, and ultimately made available to the public.

One of the deteriorated finals remained, giving Henning a good understanding of how to replicate the massive pieces which stand about two feet high. The design is described by Brosnihan as bold, with a leafy motif and deeply-carved acanthus foliage. The leaves are carved in three dimensions and nearly free-standing, so daylight can penetrate the interior to create dramatic shadows. “The carving stays as true to the original as possible,” Henning said. Experts on the mansion’s features, call the finials the most important sculptural ornaments of the mansion’s exterior and an exercise in virtuosity, according to Brosnihan. Henning had a formal apprenticeship in stone sculpture when he lived in East Germany before emigrating to the United States. He’d had an interest in tools, and carpentry, but the job opportunities didn’t excite him. “I didn’t want to work in a factory…I wanted to work on a castle or church.” Henning said it has been a great experience relocating from East Berlin, Germany, to Berlin, Conn. “I love this town,” he said. Henning also has sculpted small pieces, such as stone plaques with house numbers, for neighbors and other residents.
