Norman Rockwell Christmas coming to the ridge

High school of the future

By Olivia L. Lawremce The Berlin Citizen

A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 21 at Town Hall in regards to a $69.9 million plan to renovate and expand Berlin High School. Architects and engineers Silver/Petrucelli + Associates, Inc. presented the new plan to the Town Council Dec. 7. The council subsequently moved it forward to a public hearing. The architects’ proposal can be viewed on the town website under the Public Works Department. For more on the plan, see page 3.

This Christmas Eve, all along Worthington Ridge from Mill Street to the south end, 1,300 luminaria will light the way to a season of joy. “We forget the simple things in life,” said Chris Rose, who organized the event. “As a child I remember Worthington Ridge years ago when the houses had all these candles like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting.” Rose said she hopes to bring that image back to Berlin and she’s gained a lot

of support for the effort. With the offical okay from the town, police and fire, the plan has taken shape. Berlin Congregational Church has offered its hall to use as a work station to set up the luminaria bags. There will be a work night, Tuesday, Dec. 21 beginning at 6 p.m. The Berlin fire departments will lend a flatbed truck to the effort and will be carrying the candles (set in bags with a sand base) to the street, along with a Santa to preside over the installation.

Last minute shopping challenge: one hour, $100, Berlin

No need to panic, help is just around the corner By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen

Except for the super-organized few, who have all their shopping done by Thanksgiving, most of us have found ourselves, short on ideas, cash, and time when the Big Day bears down. While the scenario about to unfold is (somewhat) hypothetical, it could be real. To help you out and to test myself, I devised a holiday shopping challenge. One hour, $100, and five presents to buy - in Berlin - for a variety of people, ages, and situations. Crazy? Oh yeah. Also, no gift certificates allowed and keep
