The Town of Berlin is continuing to collect tree debris generated from the late October snow storm. Public Works crews have been diligently working to remove curbside debris and are making steady progress with this overwhelming task. As of Dec. 21, an estimated 75 to 80 percent of the debris has been collected from locally owned and maintained roadways and park properties. Collection crews have been

2011 news quiz answers

Here are descriptions of the news events depicted by photos on page 1.

1. Goat Benny the Goat was living a happy life until a neighbor’s complaint got him in trouble with zoning regulations. For a while, it seemed Benny had caught the imagination of the world. He had his own Facebook page, he was on the nightly news, and throngs of fans showed up to support him at meetings. Eventually the zoning board put the matter on hold as it called for a review of the regulations’ wording which may have caused confusion.

4. Twin towers tribute This year, as every year since 2001, the nation paused to remember the terrorist attack and resulting tragedies that occurred. This year marked the 10th anniversary of that dark day and Berlin residents responded with a variety of memorials, services and events. 5. 150th anniversary of the Civil War Berlin has a rich history in its involvement with the Civil

The local Veterans Commission worked with the town to create this memorial to all who served in the military. It was dedicated last summer. 2. High school referendum A leaky classroom ceiling became a rallying point for proponents of a $70 million renovate-as-new project for Berlin High School. A more expensive option had failed at referendum in June 2010, but the March 15, 2011 vote proved successful by a decisive margin. The total cost the town will bond is $69,850,000 and expected reimbursement of $22,621,830 will bring the final figure to $47,328,170. Renovations are expected to commence in 2012. The 150 pound bear was seen in the vicinity of two schools, on Peter Parley Row, and eating from bird feeders. DEP officers choose not to relocate the animal, instead a “beanbag” shotgun was used to chase him into the woods. One official called the bear-related hoopla “a circus”.

Hawthorne Inn entered new phase in 2011 By Dan Ivers Special to The Citizen In August 2010, Syed Bokhari purchased the Hawthorne Inn, a longtime local landmark with a loyal,

if graying, customer base. A little more than a year later, he has already completed the first phase of a major revamp aimed at launching its classic appeal into the 21st century. Until its sale for $1.8 million, the inn had been owned for 65 years by the Grelak family and had remained largely unchanged. Known for its banquets, catering and restaurant, staples like prime rib helped the Hawthorne Inn build a reputation, and some customers have been coming back for decades. “It’s kind of an institution here,” Bokhari said. Now, however, that tradition is being presented with a new, more cosmopolitan flair. Tried and true menu items, such as baked stuffed shrimp, are being paired with more atypical options, such as

grilled venison topped with a pinot noir sauce created by new Executive Chef Kelly White. Instead of a paper menu, customers are given an iPad that can, with just a touch, provide more information on any item. “It kind of had the reputation of being like your grandparents’ place,” said Jennifer Blanco, the inn’s sales manager. “We really wanted to bring in all generations.” The transformation has been physical, as well. Bokhari estimates he will spend upwards of $1.5 million to renovate the Berlin Turnpike building. An adjacent hotel lodge was sold to a separate company for $3.2 million in 2007. The renovations began with the lounge, newly renamed Bar 2421. Neon green lighting drapes over the bar area, and flat-screen televisions enliven the walls. A small stage area has been built to accommodate live music on Saturday nights. The updates will continue with the banquet hall and dining room, which are expected to be completed sometime next year. “This is just a taste of what’s coming,” Blanco said. Bokhari is also in the midst of restoring the Litchfield Inn, another one-time landmark that had fallen into a bit of a rut. He purchased the estate from its longtime owner in June for $1.735 million. His vision is a concoction of elements influenced by restaurants in New York, Las Vegas and Europe — the idea for the iPad menus came during a visit to London.

Need was huge for holiday help and so was response By Daniel Jackson Special to The Citizen

Director of the Department of Social Services, Antoinette Pajor and Holiday Assistance Coordinator, Joyce Smoluk provided

families could receive them on Thursday, Dec. 15. The women said that this holiday was both unique and challenging because of the amount of people applying for the Holiday Assistance Program. Pajor estimated

that 45 more families received help from the program than last year. She thinks it’s because of the economy. “People have to turn to services that they wouldn’t normally do, she said. Organization is vital for this job. Receipts, gifts, food, numbers, children, clothing sizes—there is a lot of information. On collection and distribution day, the women receive help from 10 to 15 volunteers. But even then, by the end of the day everyone is exhausted. After distribution day, six people had not picked up their gifts. On Dec. 22—six days later—Smoluk and Pajor open the bay door to accept any last minute recipients. “One lady, she had everybody crying over there, said Walt Smoluk, volunteer. The woman had told her children that she had enough money to get them each one small present. When she went to pick up her gifts on distribution day, she discovered that her children received packages upon packages. Joyce Smoluk and Pajor explained how the Holiday Assistance Program works. The project begins in September, weeks before the most die-hard Christmas-lover would dream of celebrating Christmas. At that time, the women send out applications to citizens on the energy assistance and food stamp programs. They receive recommendations from the school. They make a list. Each family eligible for the program receives a number to give them privacy. Smoluk and Pajor then collect information about each child, their clothing sizes, their first names, and their Christmas wish-list. A week before the distribution day, the families receive a ticket with their number on it so they can pick up their gifts. “This community, this town makes my job easier, said Pajor. Although the program accepts donations year round, the biggest outpouring by the community comes around the holidays.

What a year it was for weather

It’s easy to get a conversation started when it comes to the weather of 2011. Everyone has a tale to tell from at

least one of the events that came our way. By the end of January, many of us had a foot of ice

on the roof. Some roofs collapsed from the weight and some businesses, such as Home Depot, brought in snow removal equipment to prevent problems. There were leaks, worries and weary weather watching as predictions for more and more snow seemed to come by the day. That was the win-

ter. Summer brought its own challenges. There was a ton of rain thanks to Tropical Storm Irene which blew into the region just before Labor Day. This was followed by a couple of big rainstorms that kept rivers swollen and nerves on edge. Then came the Nor’easter

Hawthorne

Continued from page 4

Despite a decidedly more modern look and feel, there is little worry that the changes to the Hawthorne Inn will scare away those accustomed to its more old-fashioned days. “We want to change perceptions. We’re hoping younger people and the middle-aged crowd can start coming back, he said. “They just need to see things happening. A group of locals who attended an invitation-only reception to debut the new lounge last week said they were pleased not only that the Hawthorne would survive, but also that it had begun to evolve. “The Hawthorne is certainly a place that everyone knows in the area, not just Berlin, said State Sen. Terry Gerratana, who attended, along with a number of other local officials. “It’s great to see the new ideas in here.

Origami Yoda Third grade students at Griswold Elementary School participated in an online interview with Tom Angleberger, author of The Strange Case of Origami Yoda and Darth Paper Strikes Back. A SMARTboard was used to display the video, as the Skype session occurred in both Connecticut and Virginia. Over the past two months, Griswold students have read Angleberger’s books in preparation for this author visit. During the Skype interview, students asked about Angleberger’s career, inspiration, writing habits, and personal life. The author then turned the tables and asked students questions about their favorites and provided a hands-on demonstration of how to create the main character of his first book, Origami Yoda. Students followed the online demonstration and created their own Origami Yoda finger puppets. The impact of Angleberger’s visit appears to have had an effect as there is a student waiting list for copies of his two books.

Library’s history room a town treasure By Hannah Jackson Special to The Citizen

In a small, easily overlooked room in the BerlinPeck Memorial Library, two women faithfully volunteer their time so others can discover their roots and learn more about the town of Berlin. Kathleen Murray, the town historian, and Bette Bennett have been volunteering in the David and Ann Borthwick Local History Room for many years: Bennett for 12 years and Murray for almost 15 years. Through their devotion, the local history room has grown from 10 books originating from the Peck Street library, to the current location; a small room overflowing with information. In the words of Ann Borthwick, for whom the

room is named, “You can’t go forward until you know where you’ve been.” The history room provides a link to the past. For instance, there are Berlin High School yearbooks, drawers of newspaper clippings and obituaries, photos, and shelves of books. All of the information, whether it be about people, the state or the county, relates back to Berlin. A typical day involves filing obituaries, imputing data into the online database, moving information to expanding shelves, and answering mail. The local history room has “probably helped someone in every state” due to the amounts of mail it receives, the volunteers said. Bennett and Murray also maintain an online database which can be accessed by the

local history tab on the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library website. This easy-touse tool features a search engine and consistently updated information. The name index contains the names of previous Berlin, East Berlin, and Kensington residents. Both women said the best part of the job is the friendly people they meet and the gratifying experience of helping them. However, turnout is “sporadic” and they would love to see more people walk through the door. Murray and Bennett are at the local history room every Wednesday from 10 a.m. until noon or by appointment. If you have a question about Berlin’s history or would like to learn something new, they invite you to stop in.

Berlin PD is No. 1 in traffic safety The Berlin Police Department received two first place awards at the annual “Law Enforcement Summit” of the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Division, held at the Cromwell Radisson Hotel Dec. 15. For winning the speed enforcement award, the department won a Laser Technology Inc. “True Speed S” hand held laser speed measuring device worth approximately $1,300. At this summit, the Highway Safety Division announces the winners of the 2010 “Chief ’s Challenge”. The participants in this challenge are evaluated on their traffic safety programs by a panel of na-

Traffic Officer Robert Canto is responsible for overseeing traffic safety programs and for submitting the application package to DOT for review. The Berlin Police Department received two first place awards: first place for best overall Traffic Enforcement Program in Municipal Category Three and Best overall Speed Enforcement Program in the State. Flash literature experiment a quick success Sudden Flash Youth, the only anthology of shortshort stories to focus on youth has just been published. Two of the editors are from Berlin, Tom Hazuka and his wife Christine Perkins-Hazuka. They worked with co-editor Mark Budman to create the collection which was published by Persea Books. The book contains 65 stories, none longer than 1000 words, all featuring characters under twenty years old. According to the publisher Sudden Flash Youth showcases emerging American authors writing about crucial moments of change during coming-ofage. Hazuka said that putting together an anthology of short stories like Sudden Flash Youth first requires an organizing idea for the book. In this case, while teaching creative writing at Newington High School, his wife Christine looked for an anthology of very short stories featuring young people to use in her class. To her surprise, no such book existed. So the couple decided to create their own. This might have seemed like a pipe dream, Hazuka said, but he’d had prior experience, having published novels such as: The Road to the Island, In the City of the Disappeared, and Last Chance for First, as well as A Method to March Madness: An Insider’s Look at the Final Four, a nonfiction book written with former Central Connecticut State University Athletics Director C.J. Jones. He had also coedited the short story anthologies Flash Fiction, You Have Time for This, and A Celestial Omnibus: Short Fiction on Faith. As is typical in publishing, the book proposal was

Tom Hazuka and his wife Christine Perkins-Hazuka have broken new ground in publishing with an anthology of flash fiction for youth. rejected by several publishers before Persea Books accepted it and gave it enthusiastic support. Flash fiction is a popular literary genre these days, though it has a fluid definition. Some define it as stories of 500 words or fewer; others say 750 words or as many as 1500. Whatever the exact word count, flash fiction means a very short story. Sudden Flash Youth uses a limit of 1,000 words. The stories in Sudden Flash Youth are a combination of previously published work by well-known authors such as Alice Walker, Dave Eggers and Ron Carlson, and pieces by up-and-coming writers, several published here for the first time. Hazuka and Perkins-Hazuka.Christine, along with their co-editor Mark Budman, and their publisher Karen Braziller at Persea, found some stories by searching through books and magazines, and others by contacting writers directly and asking them to contribute. Hazuka said he is proudest of a story by Matt Krampitz, his former student at CCSU and now a teacher at Lewis Mills High School.

Sudden Flash Youth is available through local bookstores as well as online outlets such as Amazon.com. “It is an entertaining and thought provoking read for high school students and adults alike, and would make an excellent present,” Hazuka said. According to promotional materials at Persea, the literary works might be described as follows: “Their young protagonists face matters of great consequence, such as the death of a parent, unwanted pregnancy, and bullying, as well as lighter, if perplexing circumstances: how to hold a prom when being home-schooled; what to do when the babysitter suddenly sees the Rapture. The stories are of this moment a girl who falls in love and then is pressured to lose her virginity in a cyberspace world - and they also remember the past: slavery, the 1950s, the Nixon era, the Vietnam War. Whether action-packed or meditative, realistic or fantastical, these brief stories brim with the vitality and intensity of youth.” (Contributing to this story are: Olivia L. Lawrence and Tom Hazuka.)

Thursday, December 29, 2011 — The Berlin Citizen

Year Continued from page 19 leaving and Rob Levesque and Rocky Gagliardi coming on board ... After four years away from the sport, Jim Day reclaimed the reins of the wrestling team... Mother and son Eileen and Dan Thurston have teamed up to coach boys swimming. Tragedy strikes: BHS alumnus Ryan Lee, a sophomore at Long Island University and a scholarship golfer, passed away after being struck by a taxi in New York City. Around town: The Hart-

ford Colonials, who used Sage Park’s Scalise Field as their practice facility, were dropped by the United Football League ... Expectations weren’t high for the young Berlin Post 68 American Legion baseball team, but the locals managed to advance to the state tournament play-in, where they won two games ... Head golf professionals, Marc Bayram of Timberlin, Tim Gavronski of Shuttle Meadow, and Kyle Hedstrom of Stanley played 100 holes in one day to raise funds for the Connecticut Section PGA Golf Foundation, which supports junior golf programs around the

state ... Berlin hosted several Nutmeg State Games events. Youth is king: Both the McGee Middle School baseball and girls track and field teams turned in undefeated regular seasons. The track team went on to tie for first at the state meet ... Julia Kemmling claimed the Connecticut Women’s Golf Association Junior Girls championship ... The Berlin Little League 12-year-old All-Star baseball team captured the District 5 title ... The Berlin Junior League All-Star baseball team earned the District 5 and Sectional championships ... The Berlin Bears walked away with two Con-

necticut Youth Football League championships. The Bears’ B-1 and C-1 team finished the year undefeated. Berlin Bears cheerleaders had a big year as well. The Bears’ A, B and C team cheerleaders each collected state titles ... The McGee Middle School boys and girls cross country teams each earned a league championship. The McGee girls went undefeated. Odds and ends: The brutal winter led to dozens of sports postponements, forcing the CIAC to allow games to be made up on Sundays. The CIAC allowed the same during the spring season

when rain turned teams’ schedules upside down ... A freak October snow storm pushed back the start of the state tournament ... The Central Connecticut Conference unveiled its new, streamlined football divisions. Instead of the usual four divisions, the CCC now has three for football ... Word came down from Little League International: A moratorium on the use of most all composite bats in Little League baseball had gone into effect.
