’Coats to play for state title By Nick Carroll Sports Editor The Berlin High School football team has had good luck at Bristol’s Muzzy Field. In 2007, the Redcoats won the program’s first state playoff game there. This fall they bested a pesky Bristol Eastern squad at the history-rich field. And the locals’ successful run at Muzzy Field is not done yet. Third seed Berlin jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 35-28 victory over No. 2 seed Avon in the semifinals of the CIAC Class M state playoffs Tuesday night in Bristol. Sink hole swallows CL&P truck By Olivia L. Lawrence Associate Editor A Connecticut Light and Power truck that struck a hydrant on Town Farm Lane was sucked into a sink hole at about 10:30 a.m. Nov. 24. The driver escaped unharmed. Water service was disrupted to about a dozen locations, including Stop and Shop and several factories in the vicinity of Masserio Drive, until about 2:30 p.m. The driver of the bucket truck said the truck began to sink immediately after he struck the hydrant. The driver, who did not give his name, said he was at the site to set a new pole. He was not

sure how the accident happened. The truck was tipped forward, into the sink hole at approximately a 45 degree angle, pitched slightly towards the passenger side. The vehicle was mired in mud and water over the hood and up to the windows of the cab. All four wheels were submerged, the front two entirely and the rear with only about six inches of tire left exposed. “It was a routine, assigned job,” said Mitch Gross, CL&P spokesperson, at the scene. Gross said there will be an internal investigation into the incident. There were no disruptions or issues with electrical service. The incident caused a stream of wa-

ter, a foot deep and covering the entire street, to cascade down the lower end of Town Farm Lane towards where it dead ends at the Sebethe River. Berlin Water Commission Manager Lawrence DeAntonio and Assistant Public Works Director Jim Horbal were also at the scene. DeAntonio said the incident caused a main water line to break and repairs will involve pumping out the sink hole in order to get to the valve. Horbal said the main was a feeder to smaller lines and only a few residences had water turned off when valves that

about an hour. Mirabella Automotive brought two wreckers to the site. After several unsuccessful attempts, the crew put metal beams under the rear tires to lift the truck and at that point was able to pull the vehicle free. Water flooded out of the cab when a crew member opened the driver’s door.

“The homes in Berlin look so festive this time of year, our club felt it would be a fun way to involve the community and support Berlin businesses at the same time. We are thrilled to partner with the Citizen to accomplish this.” said Pagliaro. “We have invited club members, employees of The Citizen and members of the community to judge the homes.” To enter your home, contact Pagliaro at (860) 878-

Berlin Juniors, which is celebrating its 45th year of service to the community, is a non-profit civic organization that is dedicated to giving back to the community through their commitment of time service. Any woman over age 18 is invited to join.

Resident hurt in crash

A Berlin woman suffered serious injuries Saturday when police said her SUV was struck by a falling tree around noon as she was traveling along Kensington Avenue Saturday morning.

Staff at Hartford Hospital said Saturday afternoon that Gwen McCann, 44, of 90 Crater Lane, Berlin, was listed in critical condition following the accident. McCann was the only person in the Lincoln Aviator when the tree came down, police said. McCann was later released and

is home resting comfortably. Lt. Thomas Cossette, commander of the accident investigation unit, said McCann had been traveling west along Kensington Avenue just north of the mall when a strong gust of wind knocked a tree from the north side of the road onto the pas-

senger side of the SUV, landing between the dashboard and front seats. “It took fire department personnel approximately 20 minutes to remove her from the vehicle,” Cossette said. The womanwas then taken to Hartford Hospital with the help of Hunter’s Ambulance, police said.

Puppy stolen Many Name Brand Items Great Clothing At A Great Low Price

An English bulldog puppy was stolen from a Berlin pet store Nov. 30, according to the Berlin Police Department. The burglary occurred at 4:40 a.m. at Home Raised Puppies, 157 New Britain Road. A surveillance tape provided some information about the incident, but so far police and store owners haven’t identified the suspects. It appears that two individuals forced a window open at the front of the building and then one of the suspects entered and unlocked the door for the other. Two employees, who live above the store, were home at the time of the burglary. Police said one of the two employees was awake, watching television, and didn’t hear the burglars until he walked out the door. Business owner Melissa Peck said the dog was about nine weeks old and valued at $1,500. She said several individuals had looked at the dog recently and she was studying the surveillance tape to see if she could match up the image to any of those. “They knew exactly where to go. They were smart, they took a pricey one,” Peck said. Peck said the incident was over very quickly and it wasn’t until the thieves left and slammed a door and another dog began barking, that the breakin was discovered. The stolen dog is described as a red brindle Old English bulldog. It is spotted and weighs about 15 pounds.

Historical Society ready for holiday open house Dec. 4 from 5 to 9 p.m., the Berlin Historical Society Museum welcomes all to our annual Holiday Open House and Fair. This year, the museum is decorated in a Victorian theme with pink fabric and lace ornaments hand stitched by the late Ceil Koboski and donated by her family and friends. The fair continues through Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with raffle basket drawings at 3 p.m. Local merchants have donated gift certificates and members are putting together baskets with a creative flair. Refreshments will be served upstairs Saturday afternoon. It would be an ideal time to catch this year’s special exhibits of vintage bridal gowns and a retrospective of noted Berlin artists before the museum closes for the year. In addition, the museum holds an extensive permanent collection of early tin

ware, bricks, toys and displays on Simeon North, Berlin Iron Bridge, clocks and early colonial cooking. It’s fun to welcome folks for the first time. Some visitors grew up here but have not entered the building since it was the old Peck Library. Others are new to Berlin and eager to learn town history as they put down roots here. The most frequent comment we get is “Wow, we had no idea all this was here! Items for sale will include homemade jellies, baked goods and chocolate candies, local honey and spices, holiday wreaths, arrangements and ornaments. We also have Berlin, Kensington and East Berlin crockery, vintage postcard books, cards, DVDs and books on Berlin history, recipe books, attic treasures,

vintage jewelry and much more. Sale of these items helps defray the cost of programs we offer to the public and displays we create at the museum and the Berlin Fair. Admission to the museum is free as are most programs. The Berlin Historical Society’s mission is to preserve, interpret and promote the history and culture of Berlin and its people, emphasizing its importance as an early agricultural and commercial center of this region. In that spirit, this has been a particularly rewarding year for us as we’ve worked together with townspeople who continue to surprise us with contributions of vintage photos and artifacts, oral histories and input to such projects as the Berlin Farm History archive. Nothing is more rewarding to us than when

Letters to the Editor Think of animals at holidays

To the editor: As a volunteer with the New Britain Animal Shelter our main goal is to find loving homes for all of our dogs. Although we try very hard to walk each dog when possible, this is quite often difficult because we are a very small group. The shelter is fenced in, but does not have an area designated for the dogs to run. This is so very important for them since they are in a cage 24 hours a day. When potential adopters come to meet them, their behavior may be rambunctious due to their frustration of being in the cage for so long. In fairness to our dogs this is not always a true reflection of their personality, since most of them calm down and are much happier after they have been walked. The way the shelter is constructed we have discovered that by simply adding possibly three sections of additional fencing and a gate we could then have an area for the dogs to run free. If you would like to make a Christmas donation to the shelter for the purpose of helping us to create an area for them to run, we would be so very grateful. You may do so by making a check out to Friends of New Britain Animal Control and mailing it to Barbara Rudnick, 44 Stony Mill Lane, East Berlin, CT. 06023. We thank you so very much for opening your heart to a shelter dog. These donations are not tax deductible. Barbara Rudnick Berlin

To the editor: This is a letter of tribute to Fr. Edmund Nadolny, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in East Berlin. He welcomed one and all to the dinner of the Eucharist on Thanksgiving Day. BOE honors Averill as Teacher of the Year By Olivia L. Lawrence Associate Editor The Board of Education held its annual meeting Nov. 23 at McGee Middle School. The evenings events included: announcement of the district’s Teacher of the Year; an interim superintendent; and the board’s first progress report. The annual meeting caps National Education Week which takes place during the week prior to the shortened Thanksgiving holiday week. The event is a chance “to celebrate our school system,” said Gary Brochu, BOE president. Numerous awards were delivered during the course of the meeting as the district celebrated excellence — and also received special support from the community. The Kensington-Berlin Sunrise Rotary Club announced its continuation of a donation of dictionaries to all third grade students.

The “Gift of Words” is a National Rotary Dictionary Project. In addition, Kevin and Lisa Budney of Budney Aerospace, Inc., presented a $2,000 donation to the district in support of the new baby welcome project. Copies of the board book Goodnight Moon, by Margaret Wise Brown, will be sent to Berlin parents upon the birth of their child. The board announced that it has appointed Mark Winzler as interim Superintendent of Schools to serve when Monday and he is scheduled to begin work in January when the current superintendent, Michael Cicchetti, leaves for a job with another district. Brochu said the decision to hire Winzler was made so as “not to create multiple vacancies” within the system. Rena Klebart is assistant superintendent. Winzler was most recently Bolton Public Schools superintendent until his retirement in June 2009. Prior to

“Raising Berlin” says ‘thank you’ To the editor: Sunday, Nov. 29 turned out to be a magnificent way to welcome in the Holiday Season of 2009. The Tree Lighting Ceremony at the VFW sponsored by Raising Berlin was truly spectacular. From the perfect weather, to the astonishing crowd, right down to the extreme generosity with donations for local families in need, it was a magical night. As a newly formed organization, we are proud to have succeeded in our first big event for the town and we are thankful to all of those who

supported us. With that said, since it was a first annual event, there are definitely some areas of improvement for next year, especially with the time allotment for the high school and community choirs. We can only get better and will start now with planning for next year’s tree lighting to make it even more impressive than this year’s. We would like to thank the following people and businesses for their heartfelt support and dedication to help Raising Berlin achieve our goal: A warm “Thank You” goes out to The Kiwanis Club of Berlin, The VFW of Berlin, Denise McNair, John Pajor, Eric Terlecky, Dave Paradis and their respective staff, General Machine Company, Inc., Officer Robert Canto and the Berlin Police Department, Rogers’ Marketplace, Alice Mitchell and the UpBeat Students who assisted

that night, Corrine Terlecky, Marlene Bradshaw, Robert Kelly and the talented students they instruct, The Kensington Fire Department, Sharon Elizabeth’s Florist, Maria Bruschino, Kenwood Auto, Arby’s Restaurant, and Academy Printing Services. Raising Berlin would like to extend our sincerest wishes for a safe, healthy and joyous holiday season. Lisa Toussaint Raising Berlin

Storrs for 14 years and the winner of the Milken Award during that time. Brochu announced that the board recently was named a “board of distinction” by the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education and also was featured in a new book about better board of education governance, The Essential School Board Book, published by the Harvard Education Press. Before turning to student and staff awards, the board recognized former board members John Richards and Richard Price. Price said his experience on the board had been “enlightening.” Brochu praised Richards for being “the cornerstone of the board” during his 11 years of service. Brochu presented the board’s first progress report which included goals for students, staff and the board. Student awards were made to what administrators called “the best and the brightest” — one boy and one girl from each school. Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents Student Awards were presented to 10 students selected by staff for recognition with a certificate of excellence. Students are selected

for the award based upon criteria such as leadership, community service, academic prowess relative to ability, as well as other factors. Student awards The CAPSS awards went to: fifth graders Claudia Zovich and Matthew Morelli from Griswold School; Danielle Skates and Gregory Platosz from Hubbard School; and Mary Lattarulo and Samuel Barton from Willard School; eighth graders Kasondra Colasanti and James Dwyer from McGee Middle School; and seniors Kimberly Rasmussen and Timothy King from Berlin High School. Staff awards The 2009-2010 Building Teachers of the Year and the District Teacher of the Year were announced. Laurie Averill, a library media specialist at McGee since 2001, went on to become the Berlin School District’s Teacher of the Year. Averill was lauded as a professional who went “above and beyond” in her work, especially in the area of the application of technology. Building Teachers of the Year were: Helen Hastings from Griswold; Melissa Cohen from Hubbard; Eileen Cutler from Willard; Laurie Averill from McGee; and Margaret DeJohn from Berlin High School. Support staff awards Support staff recognized for outstanding performance were: Dale Troutman, Griswold; Colleen Wagoner, Hubbard; Luanys Betts, Willard; Edward Adamcewicz, McGee; David Cusano, Berlin High; and Marlene Demma at the central office. Friend of Berlin Schools awards The “Friend of Berlin Schools” awards are given to volunteers nominated by each school’s administration, PTO or community, and selected by the board for their contributions to the district. This year’s recipients are: Bridget Holt, Griswold; Diane Yoder, Hubbard; Ann Salgado, Willard; Catherine Sullivan, McGee; and Kathy Riccio for Berlin High School.

We go from the Berlin Fair to the scarecrow contest to now this new tradition. It just shows you what Berlin is all about.” The group’s president Lisa Toussaint said she had to take her family to other towns to attend tree lighting ceremonies and hoped to bring the tradition back to Berlin. Before the playoffs came a ‘Bowl’ game By Nick Carroll Sports Editor They had a playoff spot locked up, and the Central Connecticut Conference Division III title under their belt. But driving away from Willowbrook Park on Thanksgiving Eve, the Berlin High School football team was a sad and disappointed bunch. “We had a lot of mistakes and we should have done a lot better,” Berlin quarterback Dan Hackett said following a 27-13 loss to host New Britain in the Wishbone Bowl. And the fact that New Britain dwarfs Berlin in terms of school size didn’t make Hackett feel any better. “If we play at the level we should every week, then we can beat anybody in the state,” he said. “They were just another opponent, no different than anybody we played,” Hackett

said of New Britain. Heading into the longawaited Berlin-New Britain matchup, the Redcoats (8-2) had already earned the No. 3 seed in the CIAC Class M state playoffs. However, Hackett indicated that the locals still had plenty to play for in the border battle. “Every game you go all out,” the senior said. “Every game we try to win.” Berlin coach John Capodice lamented his team’s mistakes against New Britain (5-5), as well. One of those miscues, a fumble on the opening kickoff, resulted in a quick New Britain lead. Another first-quarter fumble set up the Hurricanes’ second score, and gave the home team a 13-0 lead. “We had a rough start with the turnovers. That put us in a difficult situation,” Capodice said. But the sixth-year coach was quick to credit New Britain’s performance that

They’re a (CCC) Division I team,” Capodice said, pointing out that the Hurricanes were just a few breaks from turning in an 8-2 regular season. “They lost to Glastonbury by a touchdown. They lost to Southington by a

touchdown … It’s not a bad team here.” It’s not known whether a Berlin-New Britain game will become an annual tradition, but fans certainly have an interest in the matchup. A huge and energized crowd made for a championship

game atmosphere at Veterans Stadium. Trailing New Britain 19-0 late in the third, the Redcoats finally got on the board when Mason Powers hauled in a 16-yard pass from Hack-

Intent on pushing herself in the classroom, Scalora chooses Yale By Robert Mayer Managing Editor

Berlin High School’s Kerry Scalora, pictured in action this past season, will continue her soccer career at Yale University.

For most young adults, choosing the right college is a stressful and anxious time. For Kerry Scalora, it was not the first tough decision she had to make. Scalora was a decorated youth soccer player, playing on three State Cup championship teams for the Berlin Blaze. Most expected her to follow the path taken by others and go on to star for the highly-successful Berlin High School girls soccer team. Scalora took another path. Wishing to challenge herself academically, she applied to, and was accepted into Taft School in Watertown. “It was not a soccer decision, because the team at

Taft is not very strong,” said Scalora. “I knew the people I played with from Berlin would always be my friends. And I wanted to throw myself into a completely uncomfortable atmosphere to see how I would do. It was a huge change. Taft is very difficult academically and you have to stay on top of your work.” The decision to challenge herself in the classroom helped Scalora, as she has verbally committed to play soccer at Yale University. She can’t sign with the school until she is officially accepted, but if all goes according to plan, she will be playing her college soccer in New Haven. Last year, as a high school junior, Scalora received emails from colleges starting on Sept. 1 at midnight. The 5-

foot-9 forward received 43 emails, including more than a dozen from Division I schools, in that first hour after midnight. She heard from Ivy League schools: Penn, Brown and Dartmouth. Colgate, Wake Forest, Georgetown and Boston University came calling as well. “I contacted Yale right away after they e-mailed me. I had always known about Yale because it is here instate, and I always wanted to go to an Ivy League school and play soccer,” Scalora said. “It just worked out for Yale and it will work out that my mom will get to see all the home games, which she is excited about.” Scalora will join a very competitive Yale team. The Berlin High School Athletic Hall of Fame has unveiled its inaugural class. Entering the Hall of Fame will be, from the 1939-1960 era: Richard Patterson, Victor Baccaro, Phil Tinsley, Anthony Legnani, Henry Mora and Gary Waslewski. From the 1961-1980 era: Paul Baretta. And from the 1981-2000 era: Pam Wallace, Deb Tinsley Larson, Robyn Trevethan, Adam Salina and Edward Hrubiec. Also being inducted into the Hall are coaches Don Bates and Bill Gibney and assistant coaches Art Kevorkian Sr. and Roy Fabian. This week, The Citizen takes a look at the athletic career of Phil Tinsley, who is being honored posthumously. A three-sport letterman, Phil Tinsley was considered one of the finest all-around athletes ever to graduate from Berlin High School. He had speed, grace and quick reflexes, and while a modest 5-foot-9, he had amazing spring in his legs which enabled him to out-play taller opponents on the basketball court. During football season, at halftime, he switched roles and played in the band. He was co-captain of both the football and baseball team and served as class president. Tinsley, who graduated in 1949, felt he wouldn’t be able to attend college due to a lack of financial resources, but his father and former BHS Principal Kenneth MacKensie would not accept that. They told him that they would find a way to get him into college, and that’s what happened. Thanks to a scholarship, aid, the generosity of others, and his own hard work, Tinsley attended the University of Connecticut, where he played football and baseball. He set school records in football and was cited by the UConn Alumni Club as the outstanding senior athlete in 1954. Upon graduating, Tinsley received his commission in the Army through UConn’s ROTC program and became a career Army man, attaining the rank of Major and receiving two commendation medals for meritorious service as a logistics officer. In 1966 he continued his studies at the Army Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Tinsley passed away March 10, 2005. The Hall of Fame induction banquet will be held March 21 at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell.

In the second round, Yale upset third-seed Duke 2-1, scoring the winning goal with one second left in regulation — one of the most dramatic finishes in the history of the tournament. Yale was ranked 13th in the final NSCAA/adidas national poll that season. Scalora transferred from Taft to BHS for this, her senior year. This fall she helped lead Berlin to the Central Connecticut Conference South Division championship. The Lady Redcoats went undefeated during the regular season and were the No. 1 seed in the CIAC Class L state tournament.

ett. Now down 13, Berlin got the ball back on a Zachary Zulkiewicz interception, but was unable to chip any more off its deficit. The Hurricanes expanded their advantage to 27-6 in the fourth before the Redcoats struck on a 17-yard pass into the endzone from Hackett to Brian Malloy with one second to play. Devin Silverman knocked in the extra point. Hackett completed 14 passes on the night for 140 yards. Malloy had six catches. Max DeLorenzo rushed for a teamhigh 74 yards. Berlin’s No. 2 back Taylor Tavarozzi left the game with an ankle injury in the first period. Stepping in for him was Matt Padykula, who rolled up 30 yards. The Redcoats’ Tommy Undercuffler made his eighth and ninth pickoffs of the season in the loss. “I thought the kids stuck with it throughout the game and I thought they gave a good effort,” Capodice said.

When you make your living as a landscaper, it’s important to get around. Just ask Dave Rogan of Kensington. When hip pain made it too difficult to get his work done, he turned to The Hospital of Central Connecticut, where he underwent surgery to replace both hips. These days, he’s back on the job. And digging it. We offer a full line of advanced orthopedic services at our Center for Joint Care, which features private rooms, and a comprehensive program that guides you from pre-surgery through recovery. Along with accomplished physicians and outstanding staff. We also offer the latest outpatient surgical techniques using small incisions to quickly get you on your feet again. To learn more about our orthopedic services, please call 860-224-5186.

The Berlin Citizen — Thursday, December 3, 2009

Take the ball and run with it.

When it comes to investing in our community, we take the ball and run with it. For 69 years, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has held fast to our commitment to nurture and secure many of our community’s most critical programs and services. Programs like our groundbreaking First Years First Early Childhood Development Initiative touch lives in Berlin through the Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut’s F amily Literacy Initiative and the Early

Childhood Professional Educators Consortium at Tunxis Community College, to name a few. If you care about Berlin, visit us on the web at www.cfgnb.org and click on Donate Now. And if you’d like to leave an even greater legacy, we can connect you to the causes you care about most. Just call us at 860229-6018, ext. 302. We’ll help you turn that caring into action. There’s no better way to help your money - and our children’s future grow.
