Knights property on track for housing By Melissa Chicker The Berlin Citizen
At its Feb.7 meeting the Town Council unanimously voted to enter the option agreement concerning the sale of the former Knights of Columbus property and adjacent undeveloped portions of Percival Field to the Berlin Housing Authority to develop additional housing units affordable to seniors with incomes less than 50 percent of the state median income level. The former Knights of Columbus building, owned by the town, is no longer used or has future use for the town due to the buildings deteriorated condition. “We’ve had numerous people look at the building to see if it can be saved,” said Mayor Adam Salina. “It seems smarter to demolish the
building to utilize the property.” In December 2009 the Town Council made a section 8-24 referral to the Planning and Zoning Commission concerning the sale of the property. At its regular meeting in January 2010, the Berlin PZC voted unanimously after much review to make the recommendation to the council. The council also moved to authorize Town Manager, Denise McNair, to sign a grant agreement form from the Marjorie Moore Charitable Foundation to accept the grant of $12,300 for the purchase of automated external defibrillators and a trainer and to deposit these funds into the Marjorie Moore Fund. The eight AEDs would be installed in the buildings of See Housing, page 7
Top 10 taxpayers The Top 10 Berlin taxpayers have been announced, with Northeast Utilities topping the list again. Changes to the list include B + F Machine Inc., a manufacturing company which replaced Legion Square Associates (Stop and Shop Plaza). According to Town Assessor, Joseph Ferraro, one of the reasons for this change can be Legion Square Associates does not own personal property and has not made any additions to the plaza. Local farm store relocates and revamps By Andrea Pomponio Special to The Citizen A.S. Labieniec has been a business staple in town for the last 125 years. The locally owned farm and pet supplier, formally located on 985 Farmington Ave. has now relocated just down the street to 817 Farmington Ave., formally Berlin Heat Treat. The owners, Carleen and Bill Quinn, and their daughter and store manager, Anna Duffy, are happy with the new location. For the Quinn family, moving the business to a four-way intersection creates greater opportunity. Being located at a stop light, customers can expect new ease and accessibility shopping at Labieniec. The business is gearing up for their grand re-opening Saturday, March 31. The event will feature vendors, free product sampling, raffles, seminars on the proper care of chickens, a livestock nutritionist, and breeders will be selling rabbits. In addition to the grand reopening, Chick Day is planned. “Chick Days are a big deal for people. It gives them the chance to see animals they don’t normally get to see up close,” said Duffy, who will also bring her miniature horse and goat for the public to see and feed. The new location also grants many perks to the business, and for customers. “There is more space for parking and the new building is handicapped accessi-

early spring come early adoptions. The animal shelter has adopted out four of their seven dogs in the last week and 25 cats in the last
month. “Adoptions have tripled from the normal season, especially for dogs,” she said. Taking care of the dogs in
the shelter is much easier, according to Lund, with nicer weather comes more exercise the dogs can receive. 1234823
The wacky winter weather with temperatures reaching into the 50s and in some cases the 60s has left the animal kingdom of Berlin confused. According to Berlin Animal Control Officer Janice Lund, the warm weather has increased the amount of animals in need and has caused animal control to jump in early to its typically busy spring season. “Cats are going into heat when they shouldn’t be and wildlife is out earlier than they should,” she said. Lund warns domestic animal owners to make sure their animals get early vaccinations, as wild animals have been spotted earlier than usual. According to Lund, more kittens have entered the shel-
ter. Two litters have been brought in, which Lund said, is unheard of around this time of year. More dogs are also being brought to the shelter, but it is unclear if it is weather related. “We haven’t had a winter at all,” said Alicia Wright, Public Relations Representative of the Connecticut Humane Society. According to Wright, the Humane Society usually serves calls around this time about incidents with stray dogs out in cold conditions. A concern to many citizens, and the Humane Society, are animals left in conditions. that can result in frost bite and possible death of the animal. Those types of calls, said Wright, have been more infrequent than normal. However, Lund said, with

Library entertains during the winter break By Melissa Chicker The Berlin Citizen
A four day weekend from school for children in February can make a parent uneasy when they realize they need to find ways to entertain their young children in the dead of winter. The Berlin Peck Memorial Library has many activities and events for children and their parents to enjoy during the extended weekend. While books are always a good way for children to pass the time, the library offers
multiple events that will help children enjoy the winter season as well as help children to find the fun in reading. “This is a way to have fun with the kids,” said Assistant Director and Children’s Librarian, Cathy Nelson. “These events are held specifically for the long weekend ahead.” The Nutmeg Book Feast, Friday, Feb. 17 is for grades four through six. The program highlights specific books that help children get started on reading. Children

The item will be revisited at the next council meeting before a motion is made to purchase the AEDs. The council wants further information on the new AED units in comparison with ones at the Berlin Police Department and fire departments as the best buy. The council also moved to adopt an agreement between the State of Connecticut and the Town of Berlin for the development of contract plans for the replacement of the Farmington Avenue Bridge over the Mattabesset River. The Public Works and Engineering Department is responsible for maintaining
bridges, culverts, and structures within the Town of Berlin. The project to replace the bridge was initiated years ago through the Central Connecticut Regional Planning Agency. The Connecticut Department of Transportation has rated the bridge in serious condition and in need of replacement. The total cost of the project is estimated at $3.6 million. Funding is 90 percent from the state and 10 percent from the town. Construction is not anticipated to begin for two to three years due to funding allocations from the region and time needed for permit applications.

Pajama party
Kindergarten registration
Kindergarten registration forms for all children who will reach the age of five years old on or before Jan. 1, 2013 and other children already five and not registered in school have been mailed. Anyone who has not received a registration form should contact the Board of Education office at (860) 8286581. All forms should be returned as soon as possible.
In the spirit of giving, these cousins shopped for and contributed 19 pairs of warm pajamas to the Pajama Program, a non-profit organization which distributes books and pajamas to local children in need. Each year, their families choose a charity to make a donation to in lieu of exchanging Christma presents. Pictured are Colleen and Jacy Heidorn of Alstead, N.H., McKenzie, Olivia and Ryan Cyr of Kensington and Kyle, Abby and Randy Heidorn of Middletown.

Concerns about falls
Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program for you. Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression
when they limit their interactions with family and friends. A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent. A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and bal-

Happy Presidents Day — but who are they?
I got into an interesting conversation at Town Hall recently with someone who — along with myself— felt we had a pretty good grip on knowing our presidents; at least the more or less “modern” ones that occurred during our lifetimes. But as we tried to recount who was who and when he served, and how many terms and any other special circumstances surrounding his presidency — well, it didn’t take too long until we got bogged down. How long did Nixon’s two terms last? And after Ford was appointed (after Nixon resigned) did he ever win an election? Who came after Ford? And did Johnson run after he finished out the rest of Kennedy’s term? How many terms did the first Bush have and who defeated him? And where did Jimmy Carter fit in - who came next? It took awhile, but we finally got it sorted, although it was kind of a shock to realize it was almost 20 years after the start of the Clinton administration and more than 30 since Reagan came in.
In case you need a refresher course, too, here’s the list of presidents we used to verify our foggy facts. Since it’s an election year, we expect there will be plenty more debates over who served when. -Olivia L. Lawrence

Heading into the home stretch of the season, the Berlin High School boys basketball team was very much alive in the hunt for the Central Connecticut Conference South Division championship. With a convincing 71-55 victory over Bulkeley last week in Hartford, the Redcoats improved to 9-3 in the CCC South. If the locals were to win their final three games, they would earn at least a share of the division crown. Berlin was slated to face Maloney-Meriden Tuesday, after press time, in a huge matchup. Check out berlincitizen.com for the game story. Bobby Mozzicato turned in a memorable performance against Bulkeley. The senior center scored 34 points, had 15 rebounds and shot 14-for15 from the free throw line. Mozzicato is averaging more than 20 points and 12 rebounds per-game. As a junior, he netted an unspectacular seven points a night. “His teammates have done a great job of getting him the ball in position to score and he has done a great job of finishing,” said BHS coach Mike Veneziano. “He didn’t go from averaging seven points a game to 20 points a game because he was a year older. He made that jump because of all the hard work he put in.” In his five years with the Redcoats, Veneziano said he hasn’t seen one of his guys turn in a season like Mozzicato has. “There are no guarantees in life, but the percentages certainly go up when you work for something,” the coach said. “I think it is great for our younger players to see first-hand how much (Mozzicato) improved as a direct result from all his hard work. I also think it is great for all the Berlin kids involved in the travel program to see a player who went through the travel program achieve the success he has at the varsity level.” “He is a great role model

The Central Connecticut Conference South Division champion Berlin High School girls basketball team capped its regular season slate Monday with a 51-36 victory over visiting Plainville. The Lady Redcoats, who improved to 17-3 overall and a perfect 14-0 in the CCC South, will garner a high seed in the upcoming state and conference tournaments. BHS senior Chelsea Vujs is pictured in action in a recent win over Bulkeley-Hartford. for all the kids who play basketball in Berlin,” Veneziano added, pointing out that Mozzicato maintains an A average in the classroom. “I am sure he is going to make a college coach very happy over the next four seasons.” The Newington-Berlin High School ice hockey team continued its onslaught last week, downing Hall-Southington, 3-1, and E.O. Smith, 7-0. With the wins, the co-op improved to 13-2 overall and to 6-0 in the
Central Connecticut Conference South Division. Newington-Berlin would clinch the CCC South title with a win over Rocky HillRHAM-Middletown Wednesday, after press time. Against E.O. Smith on Saturday, Berlin’s Jeff Smolicz had two goals and one assist. Berlin’s Brandon Ralph dished out an assist. The Berlin Redcoats defeated the Plainville Blue Devils during a wrestling duel at Berlin High School last week. Forfeitures in six weight classes marked the event. Despite the loss, Plainville coach Rusty Spence expressed confidence that at least four of his wrestlers would finish in the top six in the upcoming CIAC Class S state tournament and proceed to the State Open. “We’ve got a lot of work to do,” said Spence, who added the forfeitures contributed heavily to his team’s loss to Berlin. Senior Brian Lister and junior Marcus Slivinsky earned two of Plainville’s wins against the Redcoats. Lister defeated junior Kevin Pirruccio, 7-0, at 126. Slivinsky pinned senior Andrew Alessi at 170. Spence described Lister as “being on a mission” this season. The match in the 285pound weight class ended in a double-forfeit. Plainville also forfeited at 113, 120, 145, 195 and 220. This
ensured victories for freshman Jeremy Eliades, junior Bao Le, and sophomores Ethan Greider, Steve Petrario and Bill Conticello. Berlin won six other matches that night. The crowd came alive during the 138-pound tilt between sophomore Ryan Ogden and senior Dan Marzano, which ended with Berlin’s Ogden on top, 8-7. Berlin freshman Devon Riley pinned junior Kurt Walker in the 182-pound match that opened the event. Redcoat freshman Riley Greider pinned fellow freshman Justin Plourde at 106. Berlin out-pointed Plainville in the remaining matches. Rich Schlichting defeated Doreen Barbagallo at 132, Rick Mullins defeated Mischa Hoffman at 152, and Jordan Zima defeated Connor Oakes at 160. “I was pleased with Rick Mullins’s match,” said Berlin coach Jim Day. “Mischa is a top competitor.” The Central Connecticut Conference South Division championship, slated for this past weekend, was cancelled

In baseball he was the first team captain and helped BHS rise to the top of the Farmington Valley League. Girone went on to attend Arnold College in New Haven, and according to Hall of Fame inductee Vic Baccaro “was active in organizing youth sports in town on his own time, and was a natural born leader.” Girone took an active role in the political and civic life of Berlin. He was credited with creating the Kensington Fire Department in 1938, and was a Democratic candidate for state representative. Girone was one of the first youths from town to enlist in the Army in 1941. He had just passed the exams into Officer Candidate School when he was killed August 16, 1943 on the New Georgia Island in the Battle for Munda. He was fighting alongside fellow town resident Sgt. Martin Masselle. The Hall of Fame induction dinner will be held Sunday, April 29 at the Aqua Turf in Southington. For ticket information, contact Marie Siegal at (860) 828-1115; mvs7581@yahoo. com.

From scoring the very first touchdown ever for the Berlin High School football team, to earning a roster spot with the Marine Corps gridders, to partying with a movie star, to his later success in business, Wilfred “Billy Guite has quite a tale to tell. Now 91, Guite remembers his younger days with a great deal of fondness. He was a sophomore member of the first BHS football team — which took the field in 1936 — and recorded the program’s first touchdown on a pass from Chick Girone. That season marked the beginning of a bright career for Guite, but his life did not revolve around football. The youngest of seven siblings, he was expected to have a job and help the family. The summer before his junior year, Guite found work on a lobster boat. The days were grueling. “Other lobster boats had winches that would pull the pots. But I had to stand at the stern and pull, Guite recalled. By the end of that summer the teenager had grown three inches and packed on some 30 pounds. Come the fall, BHS football coaches utilized that added mass; the junior was moved from end to fullback. That season, Berlin had a scrimmage with New Britain. Legendary NBHS coach Chick Shea was impressed with Guite. In fact, the way Guite tells it, Shea wanted him to play for New Britian. Guite’s father put the kibosh on that idea. “He listened and said ‘Bill was born and brought up in Berlin, and he’ll stay in Berlin,’ Guite recalled. Guite remembers a conversation he had with Berlin’s superintendent of schools, Calvin E. Wilcox, soon after. “He said, ‘Billy, always remember, it’s better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond.’
Heeding that advice, Guite stayed at BHS and had a good junior season. As a senior, he helped lead Berlin to the Class C state finals, where the locals lost to Farmington 7-0. Guite also played basketball and baseball at BHS. After graduation, Guite went to work as an apprentice at a tool factory. His position would have earned him a deferment from World War II, but he chose to enlist in the Marine Corps. Upon completion of boot camp, Guite was ordered to report to one Captain Smith at Cherry Point in North Carolina. It turned out Captain Smith was Maurice “Clipper Smith, a veteran college football coach, who also helmed the Marine Corps team. According to Guite, Smith had heard he was a quality football player and wanted to take a look at him. Approximately 140 guys were vying for a roster spot on the Marine Corps team, most of them college players. A few pros were in the mix as well. Looking around, Guite knew he was a long shot to make the cut. “I felt a little humbled, he said. Against the odds, Guite made the team. However, during the squad’s first three scrimmages, he didn’t step foot on the field. Seeing the writing on the wall, Guite told Coach Smith: “I don’t want to waste your time or any more of mine. Smith convinced Guite to stick it out. He did, and ended up having a productive season. “You’re playing with the best then, really, Guite said, pointing out that his offensive linemen “made a hole that you could drive a bulldozer through. The Marine Corps team played nine games against other military squads. The Marines flew to games on a plane co-piloted by Hollywood actor Tyrone Power, who would host several par-

Berlin and started Guite Tool & Engineering Company with his brother. Decades later the Guites sold the business for a hefty $600,000. Guite stayed active in retirement. He golfed, played racquetball and bowled, and he and his wife, Dawn, visited all 50 states and travelled much of Europe. The couple now lives in Old Saybrook. Guite’s seemingly charmed life has had its share of tragedy, however. In 1978, Guite’s son Bobby was killed in a motorcycle crash at the age of 22. And three years ago, Dawn suffered a stroke which left her partially paralyzed. Guite now tends to his wife, and like many men of a certain age, likes reminiscing about the good old days. Guite has plenty of people to share his stories with, including his sons Jon and Bill, and daughter Dawn, along with five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Patients may spend their days immobile in a recliner or bed. Knowledgeable massage therapists and Reiki volunteers offer compassionate touch, relaxation, a sense of well-being and emotional health.
