Woman files variance to keep pet goat at home By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen
Sheri Sala rescued Benny, a dwarf Nigerian goat, about five years ago. Now she’s fighting to keep him, and has filed a zoning variance in hopes of saving him once again. There is currently a cease and desist order against her. “He’s been raised as a dog. I bottle fed him since he was three weeks old,” Sala said.
“He’s domesticated. It would kill me to get rid of him. I need to fight for this animal.” December 2010, the zoning department was alerted to the situation — that Sala had a farm animal at her home at 452 New Britain Road, a residential area, not zoned for this use. Subsequently, Sala received a letter from Zoning Officer Monica Holloway stating she needed three

Special election Feb. 22 A special election will be held Tuesday, Feb. 22, to fill a state senate vacancy for the 6th District. The candidates are Democrat Theresa Bielinski Gerratana, a former state legislator, and Republican Timothy Stewart, currently mayor of New Britain. All six polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The deadline for registering to vote is noon Friday, Feb. 18. You must register in person at the Registrar of Voters office at Town Hall. acres to keep a goat and that she had 30 days to place Benny elsewhere, unless she filed a variance. Sala has about 7,500 square feet of property. Regulations regarding keeping farm animals require approval from the Board of Zoning Appeals even if one has the requisite amount of land. Goats are named specifically in the regulations, along with other animals such as horses and cows. Animals can only be kept for personal use “as an accessory use to a residence” and not for commercial means. Benny is neutered, dehorned and has all his shots, even ones that aren’t mandatory, Sala said. While Benny was tiny as a kid, and expected to grow to only 30 or 40 pounds, now he appears to be pushing the size limits of a purebred dwarf Nigerian, which can be no more than 23 inches at the withers for a male. By state statute, in order to gain a variance, a person must demonstrate hardship in regards to his or her situation, a standard that has a high threshold for meeting that situation. See Goat, page 7
When it comes to following his dreams, Mike Sorrentino doesn’t let detractors get in the way. “Whatever you’re interested in, keep going after it,” he said. “If you really want to make something happen, just keep doing whatever you have to do to drive it forward and you’ll find a way.”

Prince of Peace church thrives at 50 By Karen Brancato Special to The Citizen Feb. 19, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will celebrate the 50thanniversary of its inaugural worship service. The story of the church began when 18 people planned Berlin’s first Lutheran service, held at Willard School, and attended by 184 people. From these humble beginnings, Prince of Peace now has “approximately 200 parishioners and is growing with young families,” according to Pastor Frederick Raap.
Land on the Chamberlain Highway, to build a church, was purchased in 1964, and a parsonage on Stockings Brook Road was bought in 1965. The church was built, and a dedication service was held Aug. 17, 1969. There were 77 charter members. In time, the congregation longed to add space for its growing ministry. A “Celebration of Praise and Dedication” was held May 16, 1999. With architectural plans designed by Brian Humes of Kensing-

VFW Commander back at work
Fiore S. D’Amato, 86, is presiding in his second term as Commander of the of the Berlin VFW Post 10732. Better known as “Sam”, except when he is conducting official business, he is referred to as commander. D’Amato was inducted into the Army in June 1943 at the age of 19. He received his basic training in infantry at Camp Wheeler, Ga. specializing in heavy weapons such as machine guns and mortars. March 1944, he was sent overseas to the European theater, landing in Northern Ireland. In June 1944 he went ashore on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France, as part of a replacement force. He was assigned to a newly formed Group Headquarters for the 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions. Shortly thereafter, he was re-assigned to the 2nd Ranger envoy serving as headquarters company clerk through action in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany, ending up in Czechoslovakia. He was discharged Oct. 28, 1945. As the present Commander of Post 10732, his goals are to increase membership and provide other forms of interest to the membership. Having undergone recent surgery, “Commander Sam” is now back in full swing. — submitted by Stanley Dziob

Retired race horse takes up residence in Berlin By Hannah Jackson Special to The Citizen

Center on High Road. Athena, 16 hands high (64 inches), is a descendant of the famous racehorse War Admiral, a “sign of good breeding,” according to owner Elaine Sisson. “Everyone here is very excited to have Athena with us,” Sisson said. “The people who come here adore her.” Athena has made “significant strides” and Sisson expects the horse will have a happy and full life at Mooreland Equestrian Center. Athena’s registered name is Dodi N Me, used in shows or competitions. But Athena earned her goddess-like nickname following the first snowfall of the season. The doors of the barn were opened so she could graze in the pasture. At first she was suspicious of the snow, so her trainer took hold of her halter as an attempt to calm her down. Then Athena shook her off and took a flying leap into a large snow drift three feet from the door. “A horse that will leap out into the unknown has so much heart. I know when I compete she will give me 200 percent. It was inspiring. That’s when she won me over,” Sisson said. Athena is currently in

The horse is learning to stand still when she is mounted, to master stairs and steps, and to walk on a lead. With help from trainers Christine Lentz and Brittney Carroll, Athena will soon begin training for shows. Although Athena is a “natural hunter prospect” (a show category in which the horse is judged on movement) the trainers are waiting to see where her talent lies. Mooreland Equestrian Center was established in 2007 and moved to High Road in January 2010. The business offers boarding, lessons and other services for adults and children and plans to host a horse show later this year.

BHS students trend upwards in AP success
Last year, 100 Berlin High School students took advanced placement tests and nearly 68 percent of them scored enough to earn college credits. Those results are according to new data re-
leased by the state Department of Education. In 2009, about 62 percent of Berlin students taking the test scored 3,4, or 5 – the range needed to earn AP status. The department reported that there appears to be a trend, statewide, for more students to take the test and for more to earn AP status. According to the College

But Sorrentino admits the concept for a part-travel log, part-fishing, and part-cooking show was met with some skepticism. “A lot of people said it was not possible for this to happen,” the soon-to-be 29-yearold said. “I have friends in Los Angeles and New York who work in the industry, and have for years, who said it was a silly idea.” Sorrentino and his partners on the project, Pete Flo-

Proving that hard work and determination pay off, the first episode of “Hook, Line & Skillet” is slated to air in primetime this spring. The Sportsman Channel, launched in 2003, is available in some 27 million homes. Five episodes of “Hook, Line & Skillet” have been filmed; four in New York and one in Ohio. According to the Nigerian Dwarf Goat Association, the breed has a “calm, even temperament and engaging personalities that make them suitable companions for all, including children, the disabled and the elderly…they are gentle and lovable, and even breeding bucks are handled easily. They make wonderful pets.” These goats “do not need special quarters; just adequate fencing to contain them because of their small size…for one, to just a few goats, many owners find
that an oversized dog house or two does the job.” Benny was raised with other pets, including Tiny, a Pomeranian. The two are friends and spend the day together. The animals go outside for exercise in a metal kennel enclosure that measures 20 feet by 20 feet, located at the back of Sala’s property, which abuts four other properties. They spend the rest of the time indoors, usually on a back porch, Sala said. “He’s an indoor animal,” Sala said. When she ran a shop nearby, Endless Treasures, Benny would go to

In the planning office which oversees zoning, Development Director Hellyn Riggins said she called Sala to explain the process, something she typically does with applicants. “I give a frank appraisal and relay past history. We try to be consistent,” Riggins said. She told Sala her “request was highly, highly unusual.” That’s because the property is far below the required three acres and Sala must demonstrate “statutory hardship.” Riggins said Sala does not meet two of the criteria for keeping a goat; the acreage and also the necessary distance from neighboring properties. A variance application costs $210. Riggins said Sala also will need to file a second variance, for $135, in regards
to the facilities where the goat is kept. A building housing a farm animal needs to be 150 feet from the nearest property line and any outside pen needs to be 125 feet from property lines. The goat stays in Sala’s house and so that is the building zoning is using for applying the regulations. Sala said applying the pen set-back requirements isn’t reasonable. “Everyone has a kennel in their yard — do they all have a variance?” Sala hoped to have a hearing as early as Feb. 22 and it was her understanding that if she couldn’t get the required paperwork in by the deadline for that date, the hearing could be put off another month. Monday, she was shocked to receive a cease and desist order from zoning giving her 15 days to resolve the situation. If she does not comply, daily fines can be levied. Sala said she’s been scrambling to get the infor-

the snow budget is drained and a request will go to Town Council to use the contingency fund to cover expenses if necessary. The overtime line is depleted by nearly 97 percent. Director Jim Wren said, in the regular budget, $300,000 was set aside for contingencies throughout the year. A
request will be on the Feb. 15 council agenda asking for transfers from the contingency to help cover snow-related accounts. For storm-related overtime, the garage has about 9.6 percent remaining. The

States do not take full advantage of federal funding that’s available to address a number of highway issues for pedestrians, from air quality to biking and walking initiatives. However, preliminary data shows some improvements. sider the needs on non vehicular traffic. Berlin recently moved forward with improving the sidewalk system throughout downtown.

Young organist took the challenge By Vahe Hovhannisyan Special to The Citizen
I’m 15 years old and organist at St. Stephen’s Armenian Apostolic Church, in New Britain. I officially began playing for the church at age 10, and was so short at the time that the congregation was not able to spot me behind the massive instru-
ment. I live in Berlin and started off playing keyboard and piano when I was five. I didn’t take any piano classes at the time, as I didn’t know that I would fall in love with the instrument. At around age seven, I noticed that another instrument was very similar to the piano — the organ. Not only was the size huge
compared to me, I also would need training and practice. There was no one to teach me how to play the organ though, and I barely knew how to play the piano. Still, when my priest, Rev. Krikoris Keshishian, found out about my love towards of the instrument, he approached me and offered me the position of organist at my church under the condition

Not much?
To the editor: Recently, I watched the latest Town Council meeting on television. The agenda item that grabbed my attention was the lease/purchase of two new John Deere backhoes at an equipment show. Even though the price for both machines comes to $173,147 (plus interest), after reductions for two trade-ins ($25,000), the matter never went out to bid. I thought this was against our Town Charter. Council member Dave Evans told the other council members that the town of Oxford had gotten bids for an equivalent machine at a price of $7,000 less. That is $14,000 for two machines. Then, council member Bill
Rasmussen asked how long these machines last. When he was told that they last approximately 17 years, Mr. Rasmussen announced that $14,000 over 17 years isn’t that much. Excuse me. Since when is $14,000 not that much? I could not believe my ears. This is the type of reasoning that will occur with the construction of the new high school. I am sure that the project will end up costing much more the we have been told because all types of items will be added, since over 40 to 50 years it won’t be that much. Berlin voters please remember this when you vote for the new high school, and when you vote for your council members in the next election. We cannot afford this “I don’t care what it costs” mentality. Karen C. Maier Kensington
Mail changes To the editor: I’m surprised at the Berlin community not checking on
the limited and small article in The Berlin Citizen on Jan. 31 titled “Post Office changes not expected to impact public”. Mail delivery operations will be moved from Berlin/Kensington, Worthington Ridge and East Berlin to the New Britain post office, “temporarily” leaving the postal boxes and window operations in place (hours subject to change). In my book, this move would increase expenses and has a direct impact on mail delivery times and delays, as we’ve all seen at the New Britain post office. With the new police station in mind, town officials might consider moving the police and fire stations to New Britain. This wouldn’t inconvenience or impact the Berlin public either, would it? The move is scheduled to take place April 2011. Vincent Trigila Commander American Legion Post 68

Group advocates high school fix with YES for BHS Supporters of the Berlin High School Renovation project have organized to support the passage of the March 15 referendum. Feb. 3, a group of residents registered with the Town Clerk as “YES for BHS,” in support of approving the referendum question concerning the “renovate as new” proposal for Berlin High School. The application listed two group organizers, Donna Morelli and Mary Ellen Maloney. “For us this is not a political issue,” Morelli said. “We’re just a group of residents who want to see our community finally address the problems with the high school.” “My experience as a realtor has made me acutely aware of the importance of quality school facilities,” said Maloney, a local realtor. “Not just for the students, but for home values and the general perception of our community.” Although there are specific concerns because of the “warning” status by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation process and Office of Civil Rights YES for BHS organizers said there are other issues, as well. Maloney said, “I was recently in a classroom at the high school with a dozen barrels catching water, walking around debris after the ceiling collapsed. Our school needs to be repaired now, and yet the ‘cheaper’ option pushed by referendum opponents won’t even repair the roof.” Morelli said, “We are aware this is a significant project and individuals are concerned about the project’s cost. So are we. But the cost of doing nothing, or pursuing a partial solution, will cost our community more in the long run.” Those interested in working with YES for BHS should contact: Donna Morelli at (860) 828-5458 or Mary Ellen Maloney at milkdrop@aol.com.

Old barns surrender to snow
By Katherine Vandrilla
A passerby recently alerted The Citizen to two old barns on Kensington Road that had succumbed to winter. In addition to this red barn, a white barn nearby, also suffered a roof collapse. The structures had been sagging for years, but the weight of this snow burden was too much for them to bear.

Only option To the editor: What’s wrong with this picture? The BOE proposed an $83,000,000 Berlin High School “renovation” that, just last June, the voters defeated. At the same time, a $25 million option that met the accreditation criteria was encouraged to be pursued. Now, nine months later, Councilors Bill Rasmussen, Rachel Rochette, Adam Salina, Steve Morelli and Bob Dacey are dictating to us that we must spend $70,000,000 to remedy Berlin High School’s issues. No, we don’t. The taxpayer funded, $25 million option, is the only option that we should be actively reviewing and discussing. You have to shake your head and ask yourself, why aren’t these five council members listening to us? Don’t they understand they work for us? Vote
Ignored To the editor: You voted! You won! You’re ignored! On June 8, 2010, a referendum was held on the $83 million proposal to gut the high school to the bare structure and then re-build it. The “no” votes won and the other option, a $25 million renovation plan, should have moved forward. But no, our Town Council threw back at us a $70 million proposal. The truth is they actually aren’t spending any less. What they are now proposing is spending $13 million for a new police station at the old Kensington Furniture building, and $70 million to renovate the high school. Simple math says they are still spending $83 million, and your taxes are going to go up as much as when they were spending $83 million
for the high school. Actually, your taxes will go up even more, because none of the $13 million police station money gets reimbursed from that state. Do not be misled. As of this writing there are not any agreements, letters of intent or a memorandum of understanding from the State of Connecticut confirming the rate of reimbursement to the Town of Berlin. Tax payers will bond for the full $83 million and hope that the state will contribute money for the high school. Last time, the taxpayers petitioned the Town Council’s exorbitant spending plan to referendum. We all voted. Now they are ignoring the outcome. Don’t let your vote be ignored. Go back and vote “no” on March 15. Send a message to this Town Council that you are not going to let them ignore the voters who voted “no” last June. Don Lombardo Berlin
Feb. 7 Report: Tonight was such a success. We were able to celebrate around 70 people’s UnBirthday at our kick-off event. As of now, we have Vandrilla 18 teams registered, and over $3,000 raised. That is a great start to reaching our goal of $92,000, but a long way to go. Now that the season has officially started, the teams will get more involved in fundraising as time progresses. Tonight was brimming with socialization, planning for the upcoming Relay, and tons of pizza and Un-Birthday cake to top everything off. My favorite activity was “Relay Rugby,” in which you had to race to be the first person to locate and deliver an object that was announced. If the item was a “coupon,” the first person to bring up a coupon won a special prize. I never thought that carrying around my purple pen would come in handy, but for this game it was enough to win a prize. During the night there were also inspiring speakers on why they Relay, and what the Relay For Life means to them, personally. Two youth spoke, Olivia Bednarek and Natalie Souza. As terrible as
cancer may be, it is nice to see when someone so young becomes so passionate about finding a cure. The most inspirational part of the night was the mini luminaria ceremony. It began with the setting of an empty table, in which the chair was to represent all those who were lost to cancer, and everything on the table represented a piece of their journey. Once the table was set, we lit luminaries for our loved ones who have had cancer. The luminaries were lit in groups; those who had a parent with cancer lit them all at once, those who knew a friend with cancer lit them together, and so on, until all of the luminaries had been lit. It was moving to see how everyone had been touched by cancer in one way or another, even if they themselves were not a survivor. Too many people have had to deal with cancer; we have to find a cure. That is what we are doing at the Relay For Life. For information about Relay For Life of Berlin or forming a team, contact Lynn Kipphut, Community Executive, Development, ACS, at (203) 379-4874 or at lynn.kipphut@cancer.org, or visit www.RelayFor Life.org/berlinct. Berlin crowns five individual champions Next up: Class M tournament Photo by Matt Leidemer
By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
Mason Powers and Kevin Spence had two epic battles during the regular season, but their third was special. Berlin High School’s Powers beat Plainville’s Spence, 2-1, in three overtimes this past weekend to capture the Central Connecticut Conference South Division 215-pound championship. “It was by far the most exciting match of the day,” Berlin coach C.J. McCormack said. “There was a lot of pressure and tons of adversity that Mason had to overcome, and he’s not use to that, because he usually just manhandles everyone the first and second periods. It was awesome to see Mason get tested, and pass the test. He stepped up and did exactly what he was supposed to.” McCormack had high praise for Spence as well. “He is an unbelievable athlete,” he said. Powers swept Spence this season.
Berlin High School’s Mason Powers and Plainville’s Kevin Spence tangled three times this season. Powers won each match by one point. This past weekend, Powers topped Spence, 2-1, in three overtimes, to capture the Central Connecticut Conference South Division 215-pound championship.
All three matches between the seniors were one-point affairs. Spurred on by Powers, the BHS wrestling team generated 174.5 points and finished third at the CCC
South tournament, held Saturday at Bristol Central. Seven Redcoats advanced to the finals that day. Joining Powers as individual champions was teammates
Jake Eliades (125), Will Matuszak (140), Anthony Squitieri (160) and Mike Fiorillo (171). Matuszak dominated his bracket and earned a tech-fall in the finals. “He’s just having an unbelievable senior season,” said McCormack. McCormack lists Squitieri as his team’s best pure wrestler — but he’s no natural. “In my eyes, he’s done some of the most improving from his freshman year to his senior year See Champions, page 18
Record fourth straight title for BHS cheer team By Matt Leidemer Special to The Citizen
The Berlin High cheerleaders returned home from the Central Connecticut Conference competition, held this past weekend in Southington, with a pair of championship trophies. The Redcoats won the South Division title, and were named CCC Grand Champion for the first time. The Redcoats’ division title, their fourth consecutive, was also a first on a larger scale. Including the now-defunct Northwest Conference, before this year, no CCC team had won a conference title four years running. “I’m so proud of them right now,” Berlin coach Debi Muzio said. “It’s an appropriate group of girls for this to happen to.” Although the South Division included just Berlin, Bristol Eastern and
Plainville, the quality of the competition was impressive. “We were up against some really great teams in our division,” BHS senior captain Kendra Manthey said. “And although there weren’t that many, the girls we went up against were really talented. We had a little mishap and put two new girls in this week, but we really pulled it together as a team. It was truly a team effort. We are so happy about what we did today.” For the second competition this season, Berlin had a few drops and miscues during their warm-up routine, but hit near-perfectly when it mattered. “We all just work together,” BHS senior captain Cammy Chrzan said. “It works.” “We spend so many hours in the gym late at night, when people don’t really rec-

ADs’ job gets tricky in the winter By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
Despite the wicked winter the state has endured, Berlin High School athletics schedule has not been too shaken. Berlin High School athletics director Jim Day said all but two postponed events will be made up. However, the weather has resulted in a lot of practices being cancelled, which no coach likes to see. “The area that it has hurt
the most is with holding consistent practices,” Day said. “The coaches have been very frustrated with the lack of consistent practice time.” This winter certainly has been a trying one for Connecticut’s high school athletics directors. When games and meets are cancelled, ADs begin the process of notifying a slew of people about the schedule change — coaches, officials, the bus company, ticket-takers, clock operators, an-
nouncers, trainers, custodians, police, event supervisor. And, often times, finding a makeup date for an event is not easy. “You never like to put contests back-to-back, as you want time for our athletes to recover from the previous night’s contest,” Day said. “Also, a big factor is the officials, because with so many games being postponed their availability can be an issue.” Day said a couple of things have made the mass
postponements and rescheduling bearable — being able to e-mail, instead of call, everyone he needs to, and the fact that BHS has two gymnasiums and a wrestling room. Most athletics directors don’t have that much space at their disposal. However, ADs were given some welcome news recently.
BHS improves to 13-4; DeLorenzo makes history By Mark Pukalo Special to The Citizen
bound among his five. Veneziano said there is no record of any other Berlin player reaching both milestones. DeLorenzo had 18 points, Rector 17 and Bobby Mozzicato 16 for the Redcoats. Undercuffler added six points, 10 rebounds, three blocks, three assists and four steals. With a game the next night, Veneziano had to use his bench extensively and the Redcoats were up to the challenge in a 51-30 road victory against a hungry Platt team. Berlin got points from eight of 10 players. DeLorenzo had 19 points and nine rebounds and Rector added 11 points. Undercuffler had eight points, seven rebounds and three assists. “I give my kids a lot of credit,” Veneziano said. “It’s not easy to come back after playing five overtimes.” But it is not a big surprise. “We have one player who is a basketball-only in our starting lineup,” Veneziano said. “For most of the kids, it’s their second sport. They are just out there to have fun and don’t care who gets the credit. I think that’s the main reason for our success this year.” Berlin is at Manchester Friday and hosts Middletown, who beat the Redcoats in overtime last month, Monday.

The numbers tell you most of what you need to know about the Berlin boys basketball team this season. Nine times, the Redcoats have kept teams under 40 points. Teams are scoring just less than 42 points per game against them. And at press time, they were 13-4. “Our defense has been outstanding,” Berlin coach Mike Veneziano said. “That’s our identity. We’ve got some tough kids and we rebound very well.” Heading into this week, Berlin had won five in a row, giving up just 30 points in two of its three road victories last week. The Redcoats used their 32 zone to hold Bristol Eastern to a season-low point total in a 45-30 victory Feb. 8 in Bristol. Berlin led 14-6 after the first period and pulled away in the second, allowing the Lancers just one point to take a 24-7 halftime lead. Michael Rector led Berlin with 14 points and Max DeLorenzo added 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Redcoats had 13 steals in the game, led by Tommy Undercuffler’s five. Undercuffler, a 6 foot 3 junior, has been a key to the
Berlin defense, often playing the top spot in the zone. “He doesn’t put up the big points, but he does everything for us,” Veneziano said. “He’s been our heart and soul. “He’s a unique player because he’s quick enough to cover most point guards and strong enough to cover guys in the post. It takes all five guys to hold teams to 30 points, but he’s been a big factor for us.” Undercuffler had eight rebounds against Bristol Eastern, and Veneziano said Kevin Stritch had a strong game with six points and six assists. Berlin had to fight for their lives Feb. 10 against a Bulkeley team which had just two wins in 13 games coming in. The Redcoats let the Bulldogs crawl back within 27-21 at the half, but improved that lead to 36-28 after three quarters. “They got to us pretty good in the fourth quarter,” Veneziano said. “They made some big shots.” DeLorenzo made a key 3pointer with 30 seconds left in the third overtime to tie. Berlin lost a five-point lead in the fourth OT, but outscored Bulkeley 3-0 in the fifth for a 58-55 win. It was a special night for DeLorenzo, who will play football at UConn in the fall. The senior, who scored his 1,000th career point last month, grabbed his 500th re-
The CIAC announced that makeup games and meets may be held on Sundays. Competing on Sunday is usually forbidden by the CIAC, but with so many postponements, and time running out before state tournaments are slated to begin, an exception was made.

Berlin High School Athletic Hall of Fame
Rocky Urso Entering the Berlin High School Athletic Hall of Fame this year will be former BHS coaches Al Pelligrinelli and Jim Day, and athletes Robert McCann (Class of 1956), Mauro Gozzo (Class of 1984), Rocky Urso (Class of 1987), Ken Pera (Class of 1989), Monica Early (Class of 1990), Forrest Conoly (Class of 1991), David Swanson (Class of 1991) and Lindsey Pulito (Class of 2000). The 1958 state championship BHS baseball team will be immortalized in the Hall as well. This week, The Citizen takes a look at the career of Rocky Urso. Urso was a 1987 graduate of Berlin High School and a standout in football and wrestling. An All-Northwest Conference selection in football, Urso, a team captain, helped lead the Redcoat gridders to a share of the NWC title in 1985. However, it was on the wrestling mat where Urso excelled most. During the 1985-86 season, Urso claimed the
NWC and Class S state championship in his weight class. His senior year, Urso was named Urso team captain and once again won the conference and state title. Also, that season, he became the first Connecticut wrestler to place first at the New England tournament. Urso went on to wrestle at Central Connecticut State University, where he was named a team captain and qualified for the NCAA Division I tournament. Urso resides in West Hartford and is an administrator in the physical therapy field. The Hall of Fame induction dinner will be held Sunday, March 20 at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell. Coats’ Notes Berlin High School indoor track and field athletes competed in the CIAC Class M state championship meet Saturday at the New Haven Athletic Center. The Berlin boys tallied 10 points and landed in 14th place. The BHS girls earned no points at the event. The Redcoats’ Ras Morgan finished second in the 55 with a time of 6.66 seconds. Berlin’s next highest finish was registered by Connor Hilbie, who was fifth in the 3,200 (10:11.53). Prior to the state meet, the BHS indoor teams competed in the Central Connecticut Conference championship meet. The local boys finished 12th out of 32 teams. The girls landed in 23rd place. Berlin’s Jimmy Nolan won pole vault with a season-best jump of 12 feet. The Redcoats’ next best finisher was Morgan, who placed second in the 55 (6.63). Also competing well for the BHS boys was Zach Giaconne (fifth place, pole vault, 10-6). Leading the Berlin girls at the CCC meet was Kate Piotrowicz, who placed fifth in
shot put with a throw of 32-feet, 4-inches. The Berlin High School girls basketball team capped its regular season slate Monday night with a 64-38 victory over host Middletown. The Lady Redcoats, who improved to 15-5, had three players score in double-figures against Middletown (8-12). Alyssa Barrett netted 16, Jess Szczepanik had 12 and Monique St. Jarre added 10. Brandon Ralph, Tony Domerowski and Andrew Richard each scored as the Newington-Berlin hockey team topped HallSouthington Saturday. Mike Reynolds made 11 saves for the victors, who improved to 104-1. Berlin High School usually gets the best of Plainville in boys swimming. But not this year. The resurgent Blue Devils bested the Redcoats, 97-85, last week to improve to 9-2. The Redcoats, led by double-winners Dan Klotz (50, 100 freestyle) and Kevin Kozikowski (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly), fell to 1-6.

the CCC South title with 199 points. Rounding out the field was Middletown (185), Berlin, Bristol Central (149), Plainville (96), Maloney (78.5) and Platt (75). Next up for the Redcoats is the CIAC Class M state tournament this weekend in Willimantic. The host team, Windham, and Bacon Academy are expected to battle it out for the Class M crown. “I’m comfortable saying
we can be Top 3, without a doubt in my mind, if we wrestle to our potential,” McCormack said. “I’ve been around a lot of wrestling teams; college, high school. These kids are so unified. They’re so together. They’re focused on the one task at hand.” Berlin finished ninth at the 2010 Class M tournament. Powers was second at 215. Matuszak placed fifth at 135.
new champion. Before Berlin took its crown, East Hartford was the two-time reigning Grand Champion. Like the Redcoats, East Hartford has now won four straight division titles. Berlin’s domination of the South Division continued in the individual ranks as well. Six Redcoats were named to the All-South Division team: Chrzan, Manthey, fellow sen-
ior captain Amanda McLeod, seniors Rebecca Calafiore and Tess McCurdy, and sophomore Quinn McCurdy. Looking ahead to the state championships in March, McLeod, a four-time all-conference selection, likes the outlook for her team. “I think our chances at states are really good if our team works together, and everyone is really committed and works hard,” she said.

Continued from page 1 points out “we’re all doing a lot of everything” to make “Hook, Line & Skillet” a reality. When filming “we try to pull in a whole bunch of local places. We don’t stay in a hotel, as much as a small, locally-recommended motel or cabin,” Sorrentino said. “We try to keep everything local, including most of the ingredients we that use in the food. We really do a lot of research before we go up to these places.” Sorrentino was raised in Berlin and graduated from BHS in 2000. “High school rocked. It was an awesome experience,” he said, recalling his days in the Drama Club and performing in
school plays. Also, Sorrentino ran cross country and track and worked on-air at the BHS radio station, where he made his share of crank phone calls — live. “I’m sure we ticked off a lot of residents,” he said with a laugh. And in a sign of things to come, during high school, Sorrentino and a friend would entertain themselves by filming mock TV shows. Sorrentino went on to attend New York’s Hofstra University. Not surprisingly, he majored in communications. “We had an awesome program. It was really handson,” Sorrentino said. “They had some amazing studies and excellent internship opportunities.” Upon graduating Hofstra in 2004, Sorrentino took a job with a national cable news
network and worked his way up from a production assistant to the management position he currently holds. Along the way, Sorrentino spent four years as a field producer. “I was traveling all around the world covering different stories from the earthquake in Haiti to the BP oil spill,” he said. “It was really amazing.” A couple years back, on their off days, Sorrentino and co-workers Flores and Micelli began work on “Hook, Line & Skillet.” The trio would spend weekends shooting footage. Once edited and polished, video clips were posted to the “Hook, Line & Skillet” website. “It developed into a pretty good following online,” Sorrentino said. The episode Sorrentino and Co. was most proud of —
filmed in Ashtabula County, Ohio —was shopped around to several TV networks. The Sportsman Channel was the first to bite. “They called us right back and said ‘we love it’,” said Sorrentino. “Hook, Line & Skillet” is coming to TV, but the money is not rolling in for Sorrentino, Flores and Micelli. Sorrentino points out it is “really common” for outdoors-type shows to buy airtime. And that’s the case with See Show, page 23

Donald A. Perreault, grieving widower of Rachel R. (Gagnon) Perreault who passed only 18 days prior, died unexpectedly Feb. 9, 2011. Born in New Britain, son of the late Arthur and the late Antoinette (Guillemette) Perreault, he attended E.C. Goodwin Technical school where he studied the tool and die trade, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, and worked as a tool and die maker for Telke Tool & Die in Berlin before being employed at The Stanley Works, retiring in 1995. He was scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 48 in Berlin during the 1970’s and was extremely proud when five of “his” scouts attained the rank of Eagle Scout all in the same year, one of those boys being his son. He loved taking trips to Maine and Canada, playing cards and cribbage, socializing with his friends and doing favors for anyone who asked or not. He is survived by a son, David Perreault of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Michele and Edward Berman and Sandra Luczynski; and three grandchildren, Jaime and Krystie
Luczynski and Chava Berman, all of Kensington; a sister-in-law, Maria Perreault; a niece, Tina Perreault-Prado and her three sons, all of Southington; a cousin, Nikki Savchik of Meriden and many dear friends. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Bruce Perreault; a brother Dennis Perreault; and a nephew Ronald Perreault.

that I would play for the church every Sunday — as soon as I was able. The organist at that time had already decided to retire very soon, so I needed to get prepared before that happened. I was still young, and now I had the challenge of preparing to play for an entire congregation. My priest started practicing the entire service with me every week and taught me much about the organ. He plays piano and he helped me with my pi-
ano playing, before we moved on to the organ. By age eight, I knew much more than I did when I was five, inching closer to becoming the next organist at St. Stephen’s. I love listening to classical music, and when I was nine I began taking professional lessons to learn how to play the piano. My piano teacher, Jean Watson, taught me much about playing by pushing me and realizing that I was capable of anything. She truly is a great teacher as well as a great person. I began listening to the music at church more often and was entranced by the

I would sit down next to the organist at church, who at the time was Shirley Kevorkian, who lives near the church, and listened carefully to the music and how she played in tune with the choir. However, the organ was See Organist, next page 1184995

perhaps the last part I listened to. I was more focused on what was happening up on the altar, as I had never seen it before from that perspective; I was just a candle boy before, and would stand next to the priest. The first time I sat down at the organ, I saw a difference in the sound and the imagery on the altar. I practiced with my priest every weekend until I became better. When I was 11, Shirley retired. I was next on the list and I had to start playing the very next
Sunday. My family was the most supportive during this time, and it felt good to have a passion that helped the community and that people recognized. There was much confusion as to who was playing the organ, since I wasn’t visible behind it, and it wasn’t until I gained a few inches to my height that I could finally learn to play with the pedals. Now, I play every Sunday at St. Stephen’s Armenian Apostolic church, located at 167 Tremont Street, New Britain, from 9:30 in the morning, until 11:30. I also
play for the church’s funerals, weddings, and other special events. I have learned that nothing comes easy without practice. I wouldn’t have been able to do what I have done without my priest, my piano teacher, my family, my community, my church, and Shirley, the organist who came before me.
