Local teen sings on legendary Nashville stage

Capodice’s attorney: ‘It looks like a jealousy thing from New Britain’

By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen

At just 17-years-old, Benjamin Shemeth sang on the stage that Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and countless other famous entertainers once graced. The Berlin High School senior was one of only 30 singers from Connecticut accepted into the All-National Honor Ensemble, which performed recently at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. On Oct. 28, Shemeth took the stage there with a choir of high schoolers from all over the country to sing for hundreds of people. “Star struck,” he said. “That’s how I felt.” Shemeth’s preparation for the big day started his junior year. He said the process for juniors and seniors to qualify for the All-National Honor Ensemble primarily begins with getting into the See Shemeth / Page A2

During the course of a season, a coach has plenty to worry about. Practices, game strategies, injuries, and the students’ success in the See related story classroom are some of the more important and on page A18 time-consuming parts of the job. But dealing with allegations of wrongdoing that come to light midseason as a team looks to return to the playoffs to avenge a championship game loss? zart, which was kind of the forerunner of our whole show in that it was probably the best piece that we did,” Shemeth said. The BHS student said he had performed for hundreds of people before, but never at the scale that he experienced in Nashville. “It’s a lot of hard work, but the payout is worth it,” Shemeth said. The choir atmosphere is something that Shemeth enjoys as a singer. He said being part of the group is a highlight of his high school career thus far. “I enjoy the sense of togetherness,” he said. “You’re making something beautiful with people that you’re spending a lot of time with.” Shemeth plans to make music his career. He is looking into colleges that specialize in music performance, and would like to be a member of a vocal group like Straight No Chaser, or Pentatonix. As for high schoolers who dream about performing on that famous Nashville stage, Shemeth said, “You will have the best time of your life.”

His recording was then sent to the National Association for Music Education, an organization that determined Shemeth’s acceptance. He found out in the summer

that he made the All-National Honor Ensemble through a phone call from his high school vocal and music director, Kathryn Scherer. “It was probably the most exciting moment of my life,” Shemeth said. The teenager credits Scherer with being one of the main reasons that he got into the selective ensemble. Shemeth worked with her since his freshman year when he began singing as more than just a hobby. “I think that she deserves a lot of credit for helping me,” he said of Scherer. After securing a spot in the All-National Honor Ensemble, Shemeth was emailed copies of the sheet music that would have to be memorized for the Grand Ole Opry performance. He said the music only needed to be polished during rehearsals in Nashville. One rehearsal, he said, was nearly five hours. The ensemble had five songs to learn and perfect for the show. One piece, Shemeth said, was the highlight of the concert. “We sang a piece by Mo-

the person’s back in front of me so I wasn’t distracted, and just focused on the music and percussion,” Rich said. This year, he said, will be even more pressure-packed, as he also plans to audition to perform on the Today Show. Every year selected students from the band get to play on the show a few days before the parade, and Rich is hoping to be one of them.

Theater auditions The Connecticut Cabaret Theatre, 31 Webster Square Road, is scheduling auditions for men, ages 18 to 35, by appointment only, for the musical “The Cardigans.” Those auditioning must prepare two songs, in the style of the show, showing vocal range

and a monologue. Rehearsals for “The Cardigans” begin in February. Performances are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays, April 1 to May 7. For more information and to schedule an appointment, call 860-829-1248.

cepted into the band, once again. Just a few weeks ago he received the two pieces of music that he will be playing on Thanksgiving Day. Since then he has been rehearsing for hours a week, while also memorizing the pieces. “I’m very excited to play there again,” he said. The band will perform “Dance with Me Tonight” as it marches miles through the city to Herald Square. Once there, Rich said the band will perform a New York Citythemed medley featuring Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York,” and the more recent “Empire State of Mind,” by Jay Z featuring Alicia Keys. “It’s amazing going down the street for multiple miles and seeing it completely packed with people,” he said. The preparation for the big day starts Saturday, Nov. 21, as Rich will begin week-long rehearsals at the Armory in New Jersey. “We get in our parade block

and march in the field to keep time,” he said. The teenager said it’s important that the marching looks professional and that the music is perfected by Thanksgiving. The practices, he says, are essential, especially the day of the parade when the band runs through the show in Herald Square. Although he says he won’t know the rehearsal schedule until he gets there. “Last year we started at 4 a.m.,” he said. The actual parade doesn’t kick off until 8 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, which is when Rich will get into position to begin marching. He said band members all strive to look composed, but it’s not always easy with the thousands of people surrounding them. “Last year I just stared at

Faith Italian dinner raises funds for church programs By Ashley Kus

businesses contributed to the cause financially, and also provided gift cards for the raffles. “We really appreciate the support,” she said. Co-chair Lynn Misteri said the night came together thanks to a talented 10-person committee. She credits their teamwork for making the event a success. “The nicest part of the night was when everyone was sitting at their tables and you could see everyone talking and laughing,” Misteri said. “It had a profound impact on me.” This was both Lasker’s and Misteri’s first year as chairs of this annual event. Both serve as Eucharistic Ministers at the church, and say it’s important that the various youth and elderly programs continue and have the proper funding.

Great food, good friends, and plenty of fun transformed Saint Paul’s gym into a Saturday evening across the sea, during the church’s eighth annual Italian Night. The event was sold out nearly a month before with 286 people attending the food-filled night. Co-chair of the event Betty Lasker said tickets for the Nov. 7 dinner sold fast. “It was so popular that we had people come from Massachusetts,” she said. It was for a good cause, with all proceeds going to support the parish’s youth and elderly. Much of the funds generated came from ticket sales, raffle baskets, and monetary donations from businesses. Lasker said many local

“This night brings together our time, talents, and treasures,” Lasker said. Misteri said the decorations and atmosphere alone were impressive. “The walls were draped with cloth and we had lighted trees in the corner,” she said. The tables were adorned with white table cloths and red napkins. The food, however, was the main attraction, and Misteri said it was a hit, with a variety of Italian dishes to sample. Chicken marsala, spaghetti and meatballs, various vegetables, and salads were just a few of the options available to guests. For dessert, Italian cookies provided by the church’s baking committee were a hit. “They looked like they came from an Italian bakery,” Misteri said.

ball team. “I just didn’t really believe it at first. I know Cap. I know what he’s about and it didn’t make sense to me.” DeLorenzo went on to say that Capodice always preached doing the right thing in the classroom to his players. The former Redcoat star also noted the coach’s distaste for foul language on the field, and his love for the community. “I know Coach Cap is a competitive guy and always wants to win, but in my time there – and some of my friends that are older than me – all of us know that Coach Cap isn’t one to jeopardize his career with breaking the rules at all.” Despite the allegations and ongoing investigation, Berlin has maintained its success on the field. The team currently sits at 7-2 following a tough 26-23 loss to Rocky Hill on Friday, Nov. 13, and was ranked seventh in the Class M standings at press time. Berlin’s final game of the season, though, is sure to be a heated one. The Redcoats will travel to Veterans Stadium in New Britain to take on the Golden Hurricanes of New Britain (5-4) on Friday, Nov. 20. “All we’ve heard is nothing but he said-she said hearsay comments. There’s been no proof, nothing’s been provided to us in that nature; just allegations,” Keshwala said. “My client has been a coach for over 18 years; a teacher and a coach. He would never jeopardize the integrity of the program, from the players that play currently and the players from the past, and the people on his coaching staff, and his family or his integrity.”

LED bulb savings available By Ken Liebeskind Special to The Citizen

With the end of daylight-savings time on Nov. 1, homeowners are more conscious of the lighting they use, so it’s a good time to switch to LED lights. “It’s the time of year we have more hours of non-day light when we’re awake and at home so we’re more conscious about the lighting we use,” said Even Seretan, United Illuminating’s manager of residential services. UI and Eversource, the lighting companies behind

Energize Connecticut, the initiative designed to educate residents about making smart energy choices, are promoting the use of LED lightbulbs, which are available at discounts of up to 50 percent at big box stores through Energize Connecticut, Seretan said. Residents can look for the Energize Connecticut logo on the lighting packages to take advantage of the savings. LED light bulbs are preferable to traditional incandescent bulbs. “They are up to 90 percent more efficient and they can last up to 25

times longer,” Seretan said. “They’re also preferable to fluorescent bulbs because they don’t contain mercury.” Homeowners can choose between three types of LED bulbs: daylight, bright white and soft white. The lumen of the bulb dictates its brightness. If you want to match the light of a traditional incandescent bulb, choose an LED bulb with 2,700 to 3,000 lumens. If you want a brighter bulb, choose 3,500 to 4,100 lumens. If you want the brightest natural daylight See Bulbs / Page A13

When a high school team wins a conference title, it’s cause for celebration. When both the boys’ and girls’ teams of the same sport win a conference title, it’s time to rewrite the record books. The Berlin High School boys and girls soccer teams did exactly that this fall, as the two both took home honors as the top squad in the CCC South-White division. The accomplishment proved to be a first this century and a first for the CCC, which is in the first academic year in its current conference format. The BHS boys squad sealed the feat with a 1-1 tie against Plainville on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at Farmington Sports Arena. The win gave the Redcoats a 7-1-2 record in the conference, besting the Blue Devils’ 7-2-1 conference mark to take home the title. “I think they were super motivated,” Berlin coach Sal Parafati said. “They knew that they had a chance to

make history and they had to do it in a very difficult opponent in Plainville. And luckily for us, we played a very hard fought game.” The draw helped the locals join their female counterparts in the winner’s circle. The BHS girls team easily wrapped up its second consecutive title with a 9-0-1 South-White division record. “Just in general, I think Berlin soccer is on the map,” Berlin girls coach Steve Yanosy said. “Both the boys and girls are having successful seasons. It’s really a testament to the players and how hard they’ve worked to earn that honor.” After ballooning to 33 teams with the recent addition of Avon, the CCC changed its division formats for all sports for the 2015-’16 academic year. Gone were the North, South, East and West divisions of seasons past. Instead, the CCC initiated three regions – North, South and Central – that consisted of 11 teams each. The regions are comprised of two divisions that consist of five (Blue division) and six (White division) teams, respectively. See Soccer / Page A17

A F G A ference title,” said Parafati, proved to be a good omen for a bid for the Class L state cially, and it’s nice for us to both squads in postseason play. The boys team (12-4-3) made it to the Class L quarterfinals before falling to fifth-seeded Wethersfield 2-1 on a 7-5 difference in penalty kicks. Prior to the loss, the 13th-seeded Redcoats had bested Maloney, 1-0 (7-4 PK) and fourth-seeded Harding, 2-0. As for the girls, at press time, their postseason hopes were still alive. The sixthseeded Lady Redcoats (16-11) earned a semifinal matchup against second-seeded Suffield set for Tuesday, Nov. 17 at Windsor High School with
