Army mom collects goods for soldiers

MAGICAL MORNING

By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen

When Berlin resident Karen Cote’s 28-year-old son went into the Army this past spring, she never imagined he would end up so far from home. Last month, Nick Cote was deployed to Kuwait, and before he left he told his mom how hard it was for the soldiers to leave their families. That’s when Karen decided to do something to help. And she’s hoping the community will lend a hand, too. “These soldiers are going to be so far away during the holidays, and it’s sad,” she said. Right away, Karen got to work planning a project that would bring the holidays to her son and See Cote / Page A4

Golden Rule: Treat others as you wish to be treated. This wise mantra, taught in grade school, is also the concept for the Charter of Compassion. The charter has been adopted by thousands of municipalities around the world; including two here in Connecticut. Milford and Danbury both embraced the charter in recent years. Stifel is working on getting Berlin on board, too. She has been spreading the word about the charter at town meetings. “This will bring Berlin to a whole other level,” she said. Stifel believes the charter has worked well in Milford, where she is the owner of Cornerstone Financial LLC. An investment advisor, she said she takes a holistic and caring approach to working with her clients. She applies the same attitude to her life outside of work, too. “I have built my life in doing good for people,” she said.

“I walk the talk.” Charter of Compassion is an international movement launched nearly seven years ago with a single website. It then grew with a Council of Conscious that crafted the official charter. The goal is to create a more compassionate world. Charterforcompassion.org boasts a list of celebrities and public figures who back the campaign. The website sums up the idea as “treating everybody without exception.” “If you have a vibrant community, it bodes well for the town as a whole,” Stifel said. “This is about helping everyone.” Stifel said Berlin’s charter would cater specifically to the town. It would be tailor-made to be constructive for the community. “Uplift Berlin” is one of a few possible name choices, as well as “Inspire Berlin,” that Stifel feels would be a perfect fit for the charter. She will need the town’s backing to adopt the charter, which she

other soldiers in Kuwait. With the help of her family, she decided gift boxes were the way to go. What was going to be only 32 boxes for her son’s platoon, turned into 100 for his entire unit. “You don’t tell a mom she can’t do something,” she said. Soon her garage was filled with boxes and supplies to fill them. Karen is hoping that the town will come together and to help wrap the packages on Thanksgiving night, beginning at 7 p.m., at the

VFW hall on Massirio Drive. The boxes will be filled with items that the soldiers need, and a few that they want. “Silly things to keep their minds occupied in the desert,” Karen said. The boxes include yo-yos, Nerf balls, playing cards, travel-sized games, candy and magazines, as well as everyday necessities such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, wipes, flavored water packets, foot powder, and beef jerky for protein. Karen said she is moved and impressed with the support her effort has received around town. Several busi-

nesses contributed to the cause with monetary donations and items for the boxes. Out-of-state donations have come in as well. “It’s so heartwarming,” she said. Karen’s goal is to bring the town together and show the soldiers how grateful residents are for their service. She plans for the Thanksgiving gift-wrapping to be recorded and posted to YouTube to inspire others. “Let’s make this a day for our military,” she said. “They deserve our thanks and adoration.”

MERIDEN — A woman is accused of stealing credit cards from a man after she and a friend found him dead in his Gracey Avenue home last month. Over the next several days, the woman spent over $500 with the cards, purchasing a tattoo, purses and clothing, according to an arrest warrant. Briana Dow, 24, of 2447 Berlin Turnpike, Berlin, was charged Monday, Nov. 16 with credit card theft, credit card fraud, attempt to commit credit card fraud, illegal use of a credit card, attempt to commit illegal use of a credit card, fifth-degree larceny and sixth-degree attempt to commit larceny. She was released on a promise to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Dec. 14, according to court records. On Oct. 5, police were dispatched to a house on

Gracey Avenue to check on the welfare of a man after two friends, Dow and another woman, were unable to contact him, according Dow’s arrest warrant. Inside the residence, police found the man dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the warrant states. Dow and another woman were outside the residence and told police they last saw him on Oct. 3 after he contacted them looking for company. After not hearing from the man for two days, they went to his residence on Oct. 5 and found the front door unlocked. Initially, Dow and her friend told authorities they didn’t go inside and immediately called police. Dow admitted to police that she had a sexual relationship with the man for money, the warrant states. Luddy accepted the position. “I am very honored and I look forward to doing the best I can for the town of Berlin,” the deputy mayor said. The next order of business for Kaczynski was to hand out proclamations for the two outgoing council members, Margaret Morelli and William Rasmussen, who were presented plaques and offered well wishes. “You truly gave your hearts to the citizens of this town, and did the right things for the right reasons,” said Democratic councilor Rachel Rochette, the former mayor. Then, the new council got down to business. A motion was then made by Luddy to introduce and accept an amendment to the 2013 Corporation Council agreement. Luddy then made a motion to extend the agreement through March of 2016. Republican councilor David Evans explained that the agreement was being extended as it stood, with the same terms. All councilors were in favor. Kacyznski then moved to appoint council members to the sub-committees, which included the standing committees of budget, ordinance, audit, rules and procedures, as well as other committees, such as technology, plan of development, fire strategic and

lines within the city. We only hurt each other with what happens here. Best to fix that door. You never know what might slip through. Best to look in the mirror before vans with satellite dishes are parked out front and you’re looking into TV cameras. As for the CIAC’s verdict on Berlin, how can you not applaud it? (Aside from the unfortunate schools who beat Berlin and are taking a hit in the playoff races as the result of the seven forfeits.) The Redcoats were called out by New Britain and ultimately self-reported, though Berlin head football coach John Capodice, through his lawyer, has denied accusations that he actively recruited kids from New Britain. Let’s face it, not many hearts outside of Berlin are breaking for Capodice, who was suspended Thursday, Nov. 19 by Berlin school officials for the rest of the season, which ends Friday, Nov. 20 against New Britain (that should be a humdinger). Capodice, fairly or unfairly, is not the most popular member of the Connecticut football coaching fraternity. But let’s face this, too: There are popular members of said fraternity probably looking over their shoulders right about now. Play fair, boys. This is high school, right? Nobody coaches at this level for the big pay or the big ego, but to do a job well and have the sort of

impact on the lives of players that college and pro coaches never do. If you’re not coaching for that ultimate reason, you’re coaching at the wrong level. You’re an educator first. As for the educators at the CIAC, here’s the lesson they need to take away from the Berlin episode. You say the Redcoats broke the rules. Yes, but they broke rules that parochial schools and the magnet schools who are members of the CIAC technically aren’t held to. Those schools, as private enterprises, do what any business does. They try to attract customers. You could say that’s not sports recruiting, per se, but it’s semantics. They are trying to draw students much like colleges. And there are no residential requirements. You’ve got kids coming in from all sorts of towns, a lot more than just four New Britain kids going to Berlin. That’s fine. That’s what the parochials and the magnets are all about. Which is exactly why those schools, at long last, need to be in their own athletic division, separate from the publics who, by default, have to adhere to a different set of rules. We’ve all got our rules on the books, from Meriden to the CIAC. It follows they are there for a reason. So let us follow them in kind. – Published originally in the Meriden Record-Journal

’Coats kick New Britain to the curb Giancarlo Tufano sends Berlin to its “first” victory of the year, a 31-28 triumph over New Britain. Tufano hit a 23-yard field goal as time expired.

Berlin ends season on a game-winning field goal By Nate Brown The Berlin Citizen

After a jarring turnaround that saw the Berlin High School football team go from the verge of the playoffs to winless, with a suspended coach, in a flash, it would’ve Berlin 31 been easy for the Redcoats to lay New Britain 28 down in their final game of the season against New Britain on Friday, Nov. 20. Yet through grit and determination, Berlin was able to begin the healing process thanks to a game-winning 23yard field goal from Giancarlo Tufano

Yet the early lead proved to be short lived, as the Wildcats responded with three quick goals en route to a 3-1 victory over the Redcoats to earn a By Nate Brown spot in the Class L final. The Berlin Citizen “They’re obviously a fast team all over and especially Things couldn’t have in the first half, they seemed started much better for the to win every ball,” said Berlin coach Steve Yanosy. “That’s a Redcoats. Not even testament to them; they’re a Suffield 3 f ive min- good team. They’ve been in Berlin 1 ute s i n to the finals a bunch of times the team’s and they played really well, Class L semifinal matchup so we weren’t able to stem with second-seeded Suffield, that.” With Berlin (16-2-1) falling the sixth-seeded Berlin girls behind early, it gave Suffield a soccer team held a 1-0 lead.

Should the athletes decide to transfer, they will remain ineligible for the remainder of the 2015-’16 academic year, and half of the 2016 fall season. “We knew it could range from a variety of different sanctions, but those were pretty severe sanctions,” Berlin’s superintendent of schools David Erwin said. “But, obviously, we knew that many things could come down from the CIAC, but we certainly did not expect all of those.” In a related move, Berlin Public Schools issued a press release of their own on Thursday, Nov. 19, announcing that head football coach John Capodice had been suspended and that assistant

The CIAC found the storied Berlin High School football program guilty of recruiting players from neighboring New Britain in a report released Wednesday, Nov. 18, resulting in a fine and forfeiture of wins for the team. The sanctions were laid out in a press release from the CIAC’s Board of Control. According to the release, Berlin was to forfeit all football victories from the 2015 season in which ineligible players participated. In addition, the program was prohibited from CIAC postseason play and will serve a one-year probation, during which time the school will be monitored by the CIAC to ensure the program is meeting regulations. Yet Suffield had plenty of speed itself, and was able to match Berlin every step of the way. “They were able to take away one of our strengths, or at least slow our strength down. So they were able to do that, and they’re a good team,” Yanosy said. “They were solid, they’re fast in a lot of areas and maybe it took one of our strengths away, or at least nullified it.” The lack of consistent passing through the midfield also hurt the Lady Redcoats. Having played plenty of long passes throughout the year, Berlin found itself struggling to connect after falling behind. “Their defense sat back and was able to read those really well, and they did a good job with that. We just weren’t quite able to connect a few of those passes, and I think that … things just didn’t go our

Berlin High School swim star Olivia DeGroff completed her final race for the Lady Redcoats on Saturday, Nov. 21, as the senior took part in the State Open Championship meet. DeGroff, Berlin’s lone competitor at the Open, raced in both the 100 yard breaststroke and 200 individual medley. She completed the 100 in 1:08.90,

way tonight,” Yanosy said. Early on, things seemed as if they would only go Berlin’s way. The goal by Taylor Budney just over four minutes into the action seemed to be quite the good omen for the Redcoats. Three Suffield goals within the next 10 minutes of play changed that. Despite all of Berlin’s pressing, the local girls couldn’t get back into this one on the scoreboard. The difference in play, though, was quite noticeable in the final 20 minutes. “I thought in the second half we were able to do a better job with (stopping them). Not quite our best but it wasn’t good enough today. Our girls hold their heads up high. They did a fantastic job all season,” Yanosy said. “This group is never going to quit. They don’t quit. We have 14 seniors that we’ve asked the world of, and they’ve given more. So they’re a fantastic group and we told them that at the end of the game.” Although the final outcome wasn’t ideal, the strong play from outgoing players such as Budney, goalkeeper Michaela Dehm and midfielder Sophia Morell – as well as a strong defensive game from junior Sarah Daddario – made for quite the ride. “They were such a great group of kids that it was a pleasure to coach them and we told them at the end, too, we love every single one of them and everything they gave, more than the soccer stuff, but made a lot of memories for a lot of people,” Yanosy said. Doesn’t sound like a bad way to finish after all.

CIAC that came down with the sanctions. “Every single allegation in (the report) is disputable: I have facts and testimony and statements made that it’s disputable in the whole report. And we were never asked to provide any of that information to the CIAC investigator. We told him we would coop-

erate, anything he needed, we would provide. And he never asked or never brought us in.” Despite the season now being over for the football team, which earned its first official victory of the year against New Britain on Friday, Nov. 20, the dust surrounding the CIAC’s findings seems far from settled. Keshwala and his client are gearing up for an appeal

process. Also, Keshwala hopes to shed some light on a recorded conversation that, the attorney claims, shows that Berlin Athletic Director Dan Scavone attempted to “bribe” one of the parents of a student deemed ineligible by the CIAC report. “He was trying to bribe her to say that my client recruited her son and that if he did re-

cruit her son, that (Scavone) could remove the sanctions against her son and be able to play sports at Berlin again,” Keshwala said. “We’ll pursue (an appeal) legally and my client is going to have the right to face the accusers. “All the accusers that thought they could hide behind a pen and paper are not going to be able to when it goes to court.”

with four seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to propel the Redcoats past the Golden Hurricanes, 31-28. Tied at 28 since the nine-minute mark in the fourth quarter, the kick gave Berlin (1-9) its lone points of the fourth quarter and reason to celebrate. The kick also helped Tufano, a freshman, complete a perfect game, as he was also 4-for-4 on extra point tries throughout the evening. Four touchdowns from four different Redcoats led to those extra point tries, as Berlin compiled 327 total

yards of offense. BHS quarterback Jack Lynch finished the contest 9-of-14 for 169 yards with two touchdowns and another score on the ground. His most impressive pass of the evening was a 69yard strike to Ryan Cop that went for Berlin’s first score of the night. Cop himself also impressed, as the senior recorded five catches for 135 yards and the score. He also notched eight tackles including seven solos and a tackle for loss, one of 10 in the game for Berlin. Mitch Maslowski recorded the other receiving touchdown for the victors on a 22-yard score that proved

to be his only catch on the night. Berlin’s senior backfield duo of Owen Taylor and Jake Loiselle also proved to be a dynamic combination, as the two combined for 127 of their team’s 158 rushing yards on only 22 carries. Taylor (9 carries, 84 yards) scored on a 69-yard run to open the second half. Maslowski recorded 14 tackles and two pass deflections to lead a defensive unit that earned 85 tackles in the contest. Jack Hamel was all over the field. The BHS junior accounted for 10 tackles, three sacks and a late interception to help set up Tufano’s

game-winner. Seniors Eric Defrancesco, Vinny Biscoglio, Kris Schreiner and Nick Cardello found themselves alongside Hamel in New Britain’s backfield for most of the evening. The five Redcoats recorded eight sacks throughout the game. The win allowed Berlin to finish its season on a high note after the CIAC filed sanctions against the program on Wednesday, Nov. 18 for recruiting violations. The team was stripped of its wins for using ineligible players during its seven previous victories during the 2015 season.

Theater auditions

Santa is coming to town Nov. 28 By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen

Santa Claus will make a visit to Veterans Park Saturday, Nov. 28, at 4:30 p.m., for Raising Berlin’s 7th annual tree-lighting event. The non-profit organization, made up of Berlin mothers, has been getting the community together to light the tree for the holiday season since 2009. Raising Berlin secretary Amy Rua explained that while in years past the event had a carnival feel to it, this time around the group is putting the spotlight on the giving-back element. Plenty of fun will still be had, however. “We are really focusing on the toy and food drive this year,” Rua said. People who attend the tree-lighting are asked to bring a toy or non-perishable food item to donate. The food will go to the Berlin Food Pantry, while

the toys will benefit Berlin Social and Youth Services. “The event doesn’t make money, it just really generates a sense of community,” Raising Berlin president Michelle Moskites said. Moskites explained that the organization of 30 moms works to teach youngsters the importance of getting involved in, and giving back to, their community. At the tree-lighting, children can participate in the Holidays for Heroes, where they will get to write Christmas cards to soldiers. High schoolers from UpBeat will assist with the project. “We’re teaching them how to be good citizens,” Moskites said. With a big turnout last year, Raising Berlin is hoping for an even bigger crowd Nov. 28. The night will kick off with festive singing from McGee Middle School students, and then Santa

will light the tree at 5:15. After, there will be plenty of activities for children and families to enjoy, including pictures with Santa. Free hot cocoa, courtesy of the Kiwanis, will warm everyone up. “It’s our major event of the year,” Rua said. This year, Raising Berlin reached out to all four fire departments in town to participate and bring their trucks to the tree-lighting. “It’s a big draw to the kids,” Moskites said. The Raising Berlin president said none of this would be possible without the partnership of several organizations in town including Parks and Recreation, Kiwanis, the police and fire departments, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, the Lions Club, and many volunteers. “It’s a really fun and free family event,” Moskites said.

The Connecticut Cabaret Theatre, 31 Webster Square Road, is scheduling auditions for men, ages 18 to 35, by appointment only, for the musical “The Cardigans.” Those auditioning must prepare two songs, in the style of the show, showing vocal range and a monologue. Rehearsals for “The Cardigans” begin in February. Performances are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays, April 1 to May 7. For more information and to schedule an appointment, call 860-829-1248.

Connecticut Better Business Bureau urges consumers to be aware that fraud and crimes of contact spike during the holiday shopping season. Cyber criminals and common thieves know that shoppers are distracted, rushed or easy to catch off guard in stores and on scam websites that pepper the Internet. Unfortunately, cyber criminals set up websites and pose as legitimate, cut-rate retailers, but have no intention of shipping any merchandise after accepting payment.

not guarantee any protection if there is a dispute or the merchandise never arrives. Look for the “S” – When it’s time to enter payment information, legitimate websites’ addresses begin with “HTTPS.” The “S” stands for secure and is typically accompanied by an icon – usually a padlock – to indicate that the seller is legitimate and taking necessary security measures to protect your credit card and other information. Beware of unsolicited phishing emails and texts - Phishing is an attack that lures you into clicking a link or opening an attachment, either of which can compromise your personal information and expose virtually all of your accounts, logins and passwords. The com-

mon phishing vehicles at this time of year include infected eGreeting cards or fake delivery notices that look like they come from delivery companies. Instead of clicking on a link, determine the legitimacy of a delivery service notice by calling to confirm whether the notice is genuine. — Press Release
