A cast of “angry” students, from Berlin High School, will take to the stage at McGee Middle School this weekend for a production of “12 Angry Jurors.” The classic play, by Reginald Rose, is an adaptation of the 1950s movie and TV show where jurors are determining whether a teenage boy is guilty of murder. Physics teacher, drama advisor and play director, Matthew Recore changed the name from “12 Angry Men” to “12 Angry Jurors” due to the mix of both male and female students in the cast. This is the first pure drama production the drama club has put on in almost four years, and Recore is excited to show off his cast’s talents. “Ultimately, a drama requires more skill for the actors and actresses to really envelope the audience into their world to make it believable,” he said. The recent high school renovations influenced Recore’s decision to pick this play. With the show taking place at the middle school, he was aiming See Drama / Page A3

for a production with a smaller number of characters. The cast consists of 15 students, which make up seven female jurors, a judge and guard, along with five male jurors and a court clerk. Seniors Ben Kozak and Andrew Rich have been in several comedies during their time at Berlin High, and both auditioned for this one, their first drama, at the beginning of the school year. “I really wanted to test my acting skills,” said Rich said, who plays juror number eight, one of the only ones in the play who believes the suspect is not guilty. Rich said his character wants to talk about the decision and hopes to save a life. Kozak’s character, juror number three, is of the opposite mindset. “I get to freely ex-

press how loud I can get,” he said. Most of Kozak’s dialogue is angry, as he is the juror who calls ‘guilty’ right away. Kozak said his screaming monologues contrast to Rich’s character’s thought-out speeches and explanations. “Andrew is naturally a reasoning person, so that really works well to his advantage,” Kozak said of his co-star. Though both seniors are seasoned comedy actors, they agree that drama is an acting challenge. “It really involves controlling your facial and body movements so that you remain serious,” Kozak said. Both Rich and Kozak were awarded the Gypsy Robe superlative to recognize their improved acting. The robe is a Broadway tradition that Recore has adapted for the

The Public Building Commission held a meeting Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the police department to approve a request for the proposal. Chief Paul Fitzgerald was in attendance to discuss the plans. Chairman James Ouellette explained that ads for bids were sent out. Commissioner Tom Reid motioned to approve the request, which was looked over by the commission earlier. All were in favor. STV|DPM, a consulting firm out of Hartford, will represent the town through the bidding and preparation process. The new department would be located on Farmington Avenue. All were in favor to authorize borings to be dug at the site by BL Companies. The bids are due to the Town Manager by Thursday, Jan. 21, which is when they will be publicly read. The next commission meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m., in the Board of Education meeting room. There will be an opportunity for citizens to comment. of smaller annual contributions. This year it has given more than $11,000 to 15 local groups and events. A recurring donation is one given to McGee Middle School. Each year, the police union receives a request from the school to sponsor the few sixth-graders who otherwise would not be able to participate in the annual trip to Washington, D.C. In other news, the Berlin Police Union recently changed its affiliation from AFSCME to the Fraternal Order of Police. There are seven Fraternal Order of Police Lodges in the state. All are social in nature. The Berlin Police Union chose “56” as the lodge number, which was the badge number of Ofc. Homeless memorial event to benefit shelter

PETS OF THE WEEK

The Friendship Service Center of New Britain serves the homeless of our area. On Tuesday, Dec. 22, the longest night, the Friends of the Friendship Center plan to participate in the National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day, to honor the memory of all those who have lost their lives while homeless during the past year. The Friends are making luminary kits so that people can join with in lighting these on Dec. 22 in their own neighborhoods. A fee is charged for the luminary kits. Proceeds benefit those living in the Friendship Center’s shelter.

Mohawk Midnight Mohawk is a handsome, young classic brown tabby with beautiful emerald eyes. He is always underfoot begging for attention. Mohawk is a cowardly lion at times and thinks he will shooed away. A nurturing home is best for him so he can forget about his tough past. Midnight is a lovely, sophisticated lady. She is stunning, all black beauty. She is eager to be in a home again. Visit www.fobac.org to view all of the adoptable pets. For more information, call 860-828-5287 or email fobac.pets@yahoo. com. Visit the FOBAC annual Bake Sale/Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 12, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the United Methodist Church, 401 New Britain Ave., Newington.

NEW BRITAIN — It is with great sadness in announcing the sudden passing of Kenneth E. Bienas on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015. Ken was born on Feb. 21, 1965 in New Britain. Ken was the beloved and cherished son of Katherine A. O’Leary, of Berlin. Ken was also survived by his loving, caring, life companion, partner, soulmate and best friend of nine years, Julie A. Diorio, of Berlin, whom he shared his love, life and home with. In addition, Ken leaves behind his Aunt Beverly Sikora and his cousin John Sikora, who both now reside in Scottsdale, Ariz. Ken grew up in Berlin; he graduated from Berlin High School, class of 1983. At the age of 16 years old, he began working at Walbaums Foodmart where he worked his way up to produce manager and was a very dedicated employee for 30 years. He decided to take some major time off in the last five years of his life to enjoy the outdoors which he so loved. Ken was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing, mountain and ice climbing, skydiving and spending time camping in upper New York State with his close friends who called themselves “the Doctor’s Club”. He loved to travel and spent three months in Nepal and China learning their culture and Tibetan religion that he so loved. His proudest and most joyous achievements were when he climbed to Base Camp Six on Mount

Opinion Real milk for real people By Ann Aresco, ND Message from the American Dairy Association: Please buy this homogenized, pasteurized, defatted, fortified “milk,” from animals that have been fed GMO corn, antibiotics and hormones – is there anything else in there we don’t know about yet? – and drink at least three times a day, every day of the year. What food can any human eat that much of without experiencing some consequences? Let alone food that has been completely altered from the natural form. It was only a matter of time before one of the most basic foods around became a big target for a corporate juggernaut. Fairlife milk, the new Coca-Cola product boasting 50 percent more protein, 30 percent more calcium and less sugar than regular milk, is processed using patented filtration technology, which basically

takes it all apart, then puts it back together again leaving out some of the naturally-occurring sugars, but including more protein and calcium. It sells for roughly twice as much as regular milk. The milk may be changed but our digestive systems probably didn’t get that memo. The components in a natural food are there for a reason and work synergistically for maximum absorption and assimilation. Is this really necessary? Sure. If it sells. “It’s basically the premiumization of milk,” Sandy Douglas, president of Coca-Cola North America, said at an analyst conference in November. If developed properly, Douglas said it is the type of product that “rains money.” Rains money? When it becomes all about the marketing and profit, sooner or later the jig is up. There is no way for dairy to be

TOWN BEAUTIFICATION

the only answer for beverage consumption any longer. There are far too many other healthy options for people to choose. Maybe dairy producers should consider going back to the less processed, more organic, whole milk delivered to your door. More expensive, yes. Less consumption, already happening. Better for the smaller local dairy farms, you bet. And what’s wrong with that? Home deliveries of many products have become big business. Even organic vegetables are getting in on home delivery. Why shouldn’t the local dairy farmer do the same? Deliver real milk. For real people. Big business dairy producers selling the most processed forms of milk won’t be jumping up and down about that idea, but what is better for the public: Big profits for big business, or a better, more natural product and more profit locally for people who do choose to drink milk?

If the dairy industry is struggling due to decreased sales, the dairy association should be asking what are wiser consumers looking for? It’s doubtful the answer is milk created by Coca-Cola, because consumption of soda is dropping. Our bodies need fewer processed foods, not more. Consumers shift supply and demand. Consumers should demand real food and more local food. Food sales should be more about eating healthy and sustaining local food resources rather than “raining money” on big corporations that seduce us into thinking that what they have created is better than anything nature can provide. Still wondering why we have the best health care in the world, but not the best health? Think about it. The writer is the founder of ProNatural Physicians Group, LLC, 355 New Britain Road, Berlin.

The Berlin Board of Education was presented with the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education Level Two Leadership Award during the recent annual CABE/CAPSS (Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents) Convention. CABE believes that Boards of Education and Superintendents which exhibit the most effective leadership are characterized by their ability to work together as teams. The CABE Board Recognition Awards are designed to recognize boards which work effectively in this manner. In order to appropriately recognize those boards which are exemplary, CABE has established a second level of awards, the Board of Distinction Award. Only boards which have achieved Level One distinction at least twice in the prior four years are eligible to receive the Board of Distinction Award. Boards must achieve at least two Level Two items in each Level Two category to receive this award. The Connecticut Association of Boards of Education serves local and regional school districts in Connecticut and is dedicated to improving the quality of education throughout the state and the nation. CABE’s membership includes 154 school districts. CABE is a leading advocate for public education at the State Capitol and in Washington D. C., and offers many types of support services to local boards of education including the Board Member Academy, a continuing education program for local board of education members. — Press Release

Sports Capodice out as football head coach Veteran playcaller will not be back for Coats next fall By Nate Brown

The Berlin Citizen

On Thursday, Dec. 3, the news broke about the Redcoats top dog. John Capodice would not be returning as head coach for the Berlin High football team. The announcement was made public by school officials that same day. “The things that came forth from the CIAC report, while they didn’t put an indictment on the coach, per se, students were deemed ineligible and it had an impact on the team, so moving forward, we really feel we need to go forward in a different direction with the football team,” said Berlin

Wednesday, Dec. 2 when athletic director Dan Scavone handed him a letter informing the former coach of the decision. Capodice will remain at the school as a physical education and health teacher. “Scavone said it was due to the CIAC sanctions. However, we know that there’s false information in the report. Soon after Aculer cut the ribbon, the same oversized scissors were brought over to Mario’s Super Barber.
