Besides Han Solo, a few old favorites will be back such as Princess Leia Organa played by Carrie Fisher. Many details about the film have been kept secret which has fans anxious to see what happens. need help. She said 25 to 30 volunteers are needed for each town in order keep up with the transportation. If there are fewer, the call lists become much shorter and fewer people will be available to volunteer. “We don’t want people to be overwhelmed. The more people the better” she said. The program launches Jan. 1, and the service is free, with a suggested donation, to those who need it. Strong said people are welcome to volunteer from anywhere to help seniors and veterans in Berlin, Southington, Meriden, Wallingford and New Britain. “Even if people are curious about how to get involved but don’t know if it’s for them, they can contact RSVP and we can see if it’s a good fit for them,” Strong said. RSVP and CRT offices are located in Hartford. To learn more about the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, or to sign up to be a volunteer, email: strongt@ crct.org.

Volunteers also have to register, on the phone or by email, for RSVP. “They are able to contribute without being tied down,” said Theresa Strong, RSVP manager with the Community Renewal Team. There are no specific hours per week assigned, nor is there a day or time that volunteers will be required to be available. Strong says that the program is flexible in that volunteers are put on a call list and are contacted when needed. If they are unable to help transport at that time, the next volunteer on the list will be called. “It’s a great opportunity to give back, and it’s rewarding because it’s helping seniors locally,” Strong said. A new breakfast and lunch spot is serving up specialty sandwiches, soups, and salads in East Berlin. The East Side Deli officially cut the ribbon Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 114 Main St., accompanied by Economic Development Director Chris Edge, Town Manager Denise McNair, and Mayor Mark Kaczynski. It was Kaczynski’s first ribbon cutting since being elected mayor last month. The deli opened Sept. 1, and the owners have since been testing out how their business works. “People have been very receptive so far,” said owner Santiago Gil. The deli is located in a residential area across from the East Berlin Post Office. Gil’s

Frankie Schimanski, from nearby New Britain, as the other owner who also has extensive business experience. The Gils have lived in the area for 13 years and are familiar with running a business. They have experience as the owners of Bounce Around Inflatables in Berlin. Roberta says that their retail background has helped them in running the deli. The food choices at East Side Deli are ones you might not find at an average breakfast and lunch place. “Our sandwiches are specialty; not just ham and cheese. There are lots of options,” Gil said. On Fridays, the deli serves up the Special Dish, unique to the rest of the week’s offerings. Last Friday, it was golabki, meat rolled up in cabbage with a side of mashed potatoes. Roberta says the weekly Special Dish has gotten popular. Mondays and Wednesdays are chili days with the piping hot dish served during normal hours. However, since opening the owners are learning that they may have to keep their doors open longer. “We have extended the hours so kids can come after school and families can come in and eat together,” said Gil. Recently the deli extended its hours on Thursdays and Fridays, until 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, the hours are until 3:30 p.m. Their egg and sausage sandwiches are available to order starting at 7 a.m. Gil says they are still improving and hope to start displaying desserts and salads in the deli case under the counter soon.

Opinion Letters to the Editor Do you know Joe? To the editor: In less than a year, sections of Berlin and Southington that lay within Connecticut’s 30th Assembly District will have a choice to make, whether or not to re-elect liberal State Representative Joe Aresimowicz in the November 2016 election(s). Many of you also know Joe as a Berlin football coach. But I am betting you don’t know his progressive voting record. During the next months you will. You will also come to realize that Majority Leader Joe is a big part of the problem(s) we face here in Connecticut. Aresimowicz in recent election years has gone unopposed and therefore has not had to explain his voting record. For instance, did you know Joe voted to authorize driver’s licenses for illegal aliens (HB6495)? Is that something you would support? I’d also like to know his position on “Sanctuary Cities.” Does Joe follow in

Malloy’s footsteps, who follows in Obama’s footsteps and approves of allowing prospectively dangerous Syrian “refugees” into Connecticut? One could infer he’d be for all of them. During the next months we’ll be asking many more questions of Rep. Aresimowicz voting record and we all should expect answers from him – in print. Joe? Scott Veley CTGOP Senate #6

Great coaching To the editor: Coach Capodice deserves a thank you. Berlin football is his passion. It is his life. His only goal during my four years at Berlin High School was to put us, the players, in the best position to succeed both on and off the field. Parents, players, and others have said that he demanded too much of a high school football team. Winning is hard and people have to be

willing to put in the time to achieve their goals. Coach Capodice was and so were we. Coach Capodice set the bar high, and we were all better for it — 106-31, four state title appearances, and one state championship. Did we have great teams? Yes. Did we have a little luck? Probably. Was it great coaching? You better believe it. Coach Capodice, thank you for everything you have done for Berlin football. Your passion, devotion, and hard work were second to none. Thanks Coach. Tommy Undercuffler Berlin

Please return bench To the editor: Paul Olander was a life member of Bethany Covenant Church. Pastor Brockett wrote “he was the soul of our church.” As a young man he helped his father and brothers dig with a horse drawn scoop dig for

the foundation of a new church on Franklin Square in New Britain. As an old man he used a shovel to break ground for the new church in East Berlin and was equally excited to do both. He always said it was a privilege to be a member of Bethany Covenant. After his passing, to express our love for a wonderful father and grandfather, we purchased a beautiful bench with a brass plaque with his name on it, which

was placed on the portico of the church. Roy Wennberg used to sit on it welcoming friends and parishioners on Sundays. Last Friday or Saturday someone stole the bench from in front of the church. We can’t imagine why anyone would steal a memorial from a church. Will the person have the decency and Christmas spirit to please return it? Sis Olander, Christine Jasse and Linda Raye Olander

The holiday spirit was up and running at Berlin’s 31st annual Tinsel Fun Run, Saturday, Dec. 5, presented by Berlin Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with the New Britain-Berlin YMCA. Racers from several towns took off at 11 a.m. from the starting line at Berlin High School. The two-mile course started up Patterson and followed up Lower Lane. The loop ended at the finish line, which was by the Berlin High tennis courts. “It’s a good venue and it’s all residential which makes for an easier course for the runners,” said Donelle Daigle, Youth and Family Director at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA. Pre-registration for the event started Oct. 19, online and in person. All registrations and entry fees were due at the beginning of this month. Racers also had an opportunity to register 30 minutes before the run started. Each registered racer was entered into a division for their age and gender. There were then winners of each of the 11 divisions. Each of the divisions allowed racers 10 and under, all the way to 80 and over. “It’s nice to provide this for the community,” Daigle said. Runners also had the

chance to enter the costume contest and show off their holiday spirit. “The costumes always make it colorful and interesting,” said Parks and Rec. Superintendent Debbie Dennis. Some popular choices this year were themed shirts,

Santa hats, holiday decorated socks, tinsel and garland hair accessories, and jingle bells. The not so popular garments, ranging from the creative to just plain unique, included; a full Santa costume (beard and all), a Mrs. Claus costume, fairy wings, a turkey shaped

hat, and face paint. Their fun attire didn’t slow them down as they raced to the finish line. “Younger racers finished in top spots this year, normally we see more 20-year-olds and early 30s,” Dennis said. The Overall Top Male Fin-

She also won first place in her age division. 10-year-old Berlin resident Austin Vale Da Serr was in the youngest division and came in first place out of five others in his age group. All winners received a unique gold trophy. “It’s traditional for the race, so some people come out just to get the Santa trophy,” said Daigle. After the runners caught their breath and enjoyed some refreshments, there was a raffle where everyone was entered by their race number. More than 20 prizes were awarded; from an iPad mini, to a variety of local gift cards, and even some Christmas wreaths. “It was a great turn-out and perfect weather” Dennis said. All five seniors – especially Perrone, Pskowski and Lynes – have the ability to lead the squad, while Grant and D’Amato could very well take the leap towards being a go-to option for the team. Dennis Schain, spokesman

for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, said animals whose behavior is dependent on temperature, such as bears, have been affected by recent highs. These species are more likely to stay active when temperatures are above normal. Species that are dependent on light conditions, however,

such as bats, have already entered winter behavior, Schain said. Mount Southington originally planned to open for the ski season on Dec. 19. Warmer temperatures have pushed the opening back to an undetermined date. “We’re waiting for an ideal snow-making opportunity,” See Weather / Page A23

Key losses: James Sanders, Dan Paszkowski, Kevin Kennure and Wojtek Kajzer were true standouts for the program, all lost to graduation. This season: A strong core of upperclassmen will lead the way for Berlin. Senior Adrian Wojtun has excelled as a racer and will be joined by senior captain Nick Baruffi in the 200 individual medley relay. Senior captains John Long and Jay Patel are leaders both vocally and in the pool as their determination should leave a lasting mark on the underclassmen, and their strong swims should have them both eyeing states. Juniors Kevin Klotz and Tom Wejda are talents rarely seen in a pool. Outlook: There’s plenty to be excited about this winter. Another strong senior class will definitely leave their mark for the season and help Berlin threaten for a top

lor Budney leads a balanced squad that should see contributions from all classes. Fellow seniors Jody DiCicco and Michele Grieco are great, and juniors Sarah Daddario and Hannah Schulz will look to make the jump to the next level. Junior Mitch Maslowski – the boys’ top performer last year – will lead the sprinters, while seniors Connor Ladd and Kevin Russell should make their presence known at the higher distance levels. Outlook: The girls seem destined for another stellar season. With strong individual efforts and great depth, they look poised to make another top 10 finish at states. Although they won’t be able to match their counterparts’ success, something is building on the boys team. Individual efforts should highlight this season, but lay the foundation for something bigger.
