Students from McGee Middle School got residents into the holiday spirit Friday, Dec. 11, when they took their instruments to “carol” at more than 200 houses in Berlin as part of their annual band fundraiser called “Jingle all the way.” Band and music teacher Marlene Bradshaw, along with another teacher, accompanied the students and also joined in playing instruments. “The kids have a wonderful time with their friends, spreading holiday cheer, performing on their instruments, and giving back to their community,” Bradshaw said. Before the night kicked off, students first asked their neighbors, family and friends

The calendar sells more and more each year. “Just last week I mailed a calendar to England,” Stanford beamed. “Germany, Scotland, France, throughout the United States. Our soldiers overseas also have it.” The women featured in the calendar are of different races, shapes and sizes. The photographs are tastefully done, with the women posing in a classy style. “All of them are beautiful women,” Stanford said. “To me, all women are beautiful and I want all women to look in the mirror and see the beauty that

killed each day by a current or former intimate partner and that 1 in 4 women will experience physical abuse at the hands of a partner. The mission statement of the Connecticut Calendar Girlz is “Stepping in to help stomp out domestic violence.” And the calendar has been a big success. In 2015, it generated $12,000 for the Interval House. “We’ll beat that number in 2016,” Stanford promised. Barkery churns out pet treats for charity By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen

Berlin High School students are barking up business just in time for the holidays. Transition Education teacher Casey Downes’ students have been busy baking all-natural dog treats in their Barkery since the beginning of the school year. The treats are made with flour, peanut-butter and pumpkin, and contain no preservatives. “It was a lot of trial and error at first,” Downes said. Last year, during the holiday season, was the first time the class started baking and selling the treats. After taste-testing on some four-legged customers, the students came up with the perfect recipe. Each twoounce bag contains about six to seven treats and is decorated with holiday-themed ribbons. A paper bone attached lists the ingredients, and states that 50 percent of proceeds go to Berlin Helping Berlin and Manes and Motions in Middletown.

The school program and horse therapy organization help those in need in the community. “We sell within the district, school, and some neighborhoods,” Downes said. She said her student Max is the top seller. He sold to family, friends, and neighbors. This year, cat treats were also in the inventory. Little, sewn

felt pouches hold the cat treats and make noise when shook. “We are in full elf workshop mode,” Downes said. Trays of treats ready to go in the oven, and rolled dough took over the tables last week as the students filled orders. At Thanksgiving time they

PETS OF THE WEEK Noel, left, and Holly, right, are beautiful, six-monthold kittens. Kind police officers came to their rescue and removed them from a neglectful home. They are now ready to start their new life as pampered, loving companions. Noel is outgoing and very playful. Holly is a lovely, dilute calico. She is softspoken and in need of a little confidence. Letters to the Editor To the editor: It is time we make state Rep. Joe Aresimowicz accountable for his votes — not his public photo ops. Let’s make his views visible for our town residents to see. Next November you will have a chance to vote a change for our town and over the next nine months we want to make Joe’s voting record and policies clear to you. In terms of illegal immigration, Joe voted to allow illegal immigrants the opportunity to pay instate tuition for our state university, which can take away potential student spots from our legal Connecticut residents and U.S. citizens. What I want to know is, Joe, how do you feel about sanctuary cities? A number of them are right in our state. And

how about the Syrian refugees? Would you accept them into our state even though 80 percent of our residents are against allowing them in under current conditions? Joe, we have the right to know. Based on your voting record, I would not feel safe with you continuing on and creating policies that support non U.S. citizens more than your own town residents. Integrated healthcare expands in Berlin By Ashley Kus

The Berlin Citizen

ProNatural Physicians Group LLC is expanding from New Britain Road to a brand new building on Webster Square Road. Naturopathic Physician, and longtime Kensington resident, Dr. Ann Aresco said the new location will serve as a host for various forms of health care. “There is more to medicine than a prescription pad,” she said. ProNatural focuses primarily on finding the cause of a patient’s ailment. The practitioners look at the patient’s environment, emotions, and mentality to find the best treatment methods. The types of medicine practiced at the clinic will range from general western medicine, to naturopathic practices. “Patients can come to one place to get everything they need,” Aresco said. Several doctors from ProNatural’s New Britain Road location will be coming over to the new clinic; however, there will be a few new faces as well. Joining the staff of naturopaths will be Dr. Sarah Zambarano, while Dr. Marla Colburn will be the new chiropractor. A resident of East Hartford, Colburn has been in practice for nearly 14 years and is excited to be part of ProNatural. “It is the way I feel medicine should be practiced; with a blend of different doctors,” she said. Along with Colburn, Zambarano and Aresco, the center

The nearly-completed center will feature a roomy reception and waiting area, and there will be seven exam rooms in total, with a few private offices.

The planning and chart viewing will happen in what Colburn calls the “think-tank,” a large room where doctors can bounce ideas off each other. “We’re really working together,” she said. A supplement room, where patients can buy and order various supplements special to ProNatural will have a separate entrance.

“The big step is to educate the general public,” Aresco said. And the clinic’s meeting room will help make this possible with weekly viewings of health DVDs and the option for local clubs to hold meetings there and learn more about ProNatural. Average Joe’s on Farmington Avenue will become ProNatural Fitness and Weight

Loss Center. Joe’s boot camps will still be a staple, but people will also have access to yoga and pilates. “We are prescribing exercise to patients and getting them active,” Aresco said. The clinic is scheduling appointments now for its official opening in January. For more information, visit www.pronaturalphysicians.com.

He attended Saint Paul’s school for nine years, and was a volunteer firefighter in Kensington for more than five years. Soon, The Bakery will have an Italian market set up in the corner where customers can browse for authentic eats. Formica is influenced by the man who taught him the trade. Berlin residents return home after fire It was a scary wake-up call for residents at the Prentice Place apartments on New Britain Road on Sunday, Dec. 20, as a fire broke out. The fire was called in at 2:40 a.m. When crews arrived they found

a working fire in a vacant unit of the complex. Nearly 100 people were evacuated from the building by police as fire crews worked to knock down the blaze. A task force was called to the scene for extra help.

The process involved includes; making the dough, rolling it, cutting it into shapes and baking them. The treats are then weighed, put into bags, and refrigerated until they are ready to be sold. “I like making the cookies and getting to make the dough, though it can get pretty messy,” said Jake, an-
