On a Tuesday afternoon in January, after the buses left Berlin High School for the day, a group of Upbeat students stood in the lobby waiting to go volunteer at a hospital. Upbeat director Alice Mitchell answered questions and made sure they were all set to leave. One student had transportation issues and told her she wasn’t able to go. Mitchell consulted with the young woman and quickly arranged a solution. Next year someone else will be Alice Mitchell, Berlin Upbeats’ go-to High School’s first and person and jackof-all-trades, as only Upbeat director, Mitchell will be will retire at the end of the school year. retired. | Ashley Kus “I think it’s time The Berlin Citizen for me to move on and really retire, and tackle my bucket list of things I would like to do,” she said. High, before going on to get her master’s degree. She then became the first female guidance counselor at the school. After years of helping students in that capacity, Mitchell “retired” and took on the role of Upbeat director. “We wanted it to be a positively oriented program,” she said of Upbeat, which she helped put together back in 1988 when the Drug-Free Schools and Communities act of Congress was providing residential training to school districts. The Berlin school district received a grant from the federal government to start the program. “What we liked about this grant was it didn’t say ‘well here’s a three-ring binder, this is a program that’s working in Wichita, Kansas and we’re pretty certain it will work here in Berlin, Connecticut,” Mitchell explained. The grant, however, gave the administration teams from the high school and middle school a chance to develop their own program

that would work in their community. “I think I was the last one to arrive at the meeting and they said ‘OK, you’re in charge’,” Mitchell noted. The goal was to have the students lead, and the administration give basic direction. “I think the thing that really made it so successful over the years is that we were willing to take a look and listen to the kids while adapting and changing with the times,” Mitchell said. The grant provided the funds for training, but, budget-wise, the rest was up to Upbeat. Donations and fundraisers kept the program running. “For a program to be 28 years old, and that started with a grant, is pretty remarkable,” Mitchell said. The longtime Upbeat director credits the school dis-

trict and the community as a whole for the success of the program. “It didn’t matter who came in, they all wanted to help,” she said. The leadership piece of Upbeat, which Mitchell said she is most proud of, began with 40 students going away for a training weekend. That has evolved into several training weekends with more than 300 students participating. “It’s really wonderful to see freshman come that May weekend, and next year you see them develop, and then they’re seniors and they are leading it,” Mitchell said. There are programs in all the Berlin schools with Upbeat high school students assisting elementary and middle school students. The program members also help out with the Kiwanis Club’s Christmas tree sale, and at the Lions Club’s fried dough booth at the Berlin Fair. “Everyone has a stake in it, it’s not just the school’s program,” Mitchell said. Mitchell will leave her position in June and will remain in the background as a new person fills the director’s chair. She won’t be disappearing completely, however. “I told the Lions Club it just wouldn’t be an October if I wasn’t cooking fried dough,” Mitchell said. In retirement, Mitchell said she is excited to travel more and work on her golf game. “It seems like a really long time, but 49 years went by in a heartbeat. It really did,” she said.

He noted that expecting big results in a short amount of time can lead to discouragement and, eventually, quitting. Carson suggested that new members use a personal training session first to assess objectives and expectations. This is applied to every type of person, whether they have worked out before, or are just getting into a fitness routine. Fitness by Design on the Berlin Turnpike has an option that offers members the chance to work out from home with video training and tips right from their phone. “I can tell people are interested more now, because, even before Christmas, people were gifting memberships and looking into it,” said owner Meaghan Massenat. The online classes make working out more comfortable, according to Massenat, who said that it makes people more accountable for their own routines. Members are

At Back East Crossfit on Deming Road, members are given the chance to become part of something bigger than their own personal ambitions. This month, the gym will be participating in a nationwide five-week “Lurong Living Resolution Challenge.” “It is a big motivation boost,” owner Jeff Capizzi said. Members will be able to compete against other Crossfit gyms to track their activity and weight loss. “We’re ready

The rest fall off, this according to Build Your Own Body (BYOB) Fit owner Ryan Kolej who said he sees a big increase in interest this time of year. “We do everything we can to encourage our members,” he said. Sixth grader Meghan had already used the boots five times; she even had a Kangoo birthday party at a studio. “The toughest thing is to keep up and keep breathing steadily,” she said. The second day of the winter-break program began with Perzanowski having the students form a circle as they marched in the boots to music. They did jumping jacks, squats, and even ran around cones set up around the room. One of the challenges was to zig-zag through the cones with a beanbag on one’s head. “Remember, shoulders back, and keep your posture,” the teacher reminded

the group. The students took several water breaks before bouncing back into the group. Dancing was a popular activity as they jumped up and down to songs like “Peanut Butter Jelly Time,” “Gangnam Style,” and “Cotton Eye Joe.” “I have fun with my friends and it’s a good time,” said sixth grader Marissa, who’s favorite activity was the boot camp portion when Perzanowski set up an obstacle course of hula hoops and cones. The boot camp was made more intense when Perzanowski made the teams boys versus girls. “It’s my second time doing this and I want to do it again,” said fifth grader Aiden. “It gives me something to do in my free-time and it’s a lot of fun.” After running around and getting their energy up, Per-

Refugee families in Berlin will have the supplies necessary to make living here in America a little easier, thanks to the Islamic Association of Greater Hartford. The Berlin Mosque, 1781 Berlin Turnpike, is collecting toiletries and other needed items for care packages. “They’re getting used to a new culture, trying to find a job, and it’s very difficult,” said Aida Mansoor, board member of the association and coordinator of the collection. She explained that the food stamps refugees are given do

A few weeks ago, the association held a community dinner and invited refugee families who came here from Syria, Burma, Sudan, and other locations in the past several months. The families were interviewed about their needs, which were, primarily, transportation and translators. A list was made of the items and services needed. “A lot of the community is helping with transporting

Obituaries Lawrence Brautigam KENSINGTON — Lawrence Brautigam, 92, formerly of Kensington, died on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at the Jerome Home in New Britain. Born on Dec. 17, 1923, in Elmira, N.Y., Larry grew up in South Hadley, Mass. After serving in the 245th Engineer Combat Battalion of the XX Corps, U.S. Third Army during World War II, he earned his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1947. Opinion Aresimowicz in favor of public retirement savings program House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D-Berlin/ Southington) released the following statement on Connecticut Retirement Security Board recommendations to the state legislature to create a public retirement savings program: “There are currently almost 600,000 workers in Connecticut who do not have access to an employer-sponsored retirement plan, which is why I made it a priority to work with my colleagues in the leg-

islature to create a proposal for a public retirement savings plan that would address our state’s retirement savings crisis. It is tremendously encouraging to see that CRSB’s report shows that it is financially feasible for the state to provide a voluntary retirement savings program for private sector workers who do not have access to one, at no cost to taxpayers. I want to commend the Connecticut Retirement Security Board (CRSB) for all of their hard

work over the past year and a half and their going forward to address Connecticut’s retirement savings crisis.” Link to Full Connecticut Retirement Security Board Report: http://www.osc. ct.gov/crsb/docs/finalreport/ CRSB_January_1_Report.pdf Joe Aresimowicz is serving his sixth term representing the 30th Assembly District of Berlin and Southington in the Connecticut General Assembly, where he is House Majority Leader.

Letters to the Editor Some more questions To the editor: Still no response to our “letters to the editor” last month from Liberal House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (30th AD) questioning his vote to authorize drivers licenses to illegal aliens (HB6495), or his position(s) on Connecticut’s sanctuary cities and where he stands on admitting potentially dangerous “refugees” into Connecticut. As we all recognize, due to an apologetic Obama/Clinton foreign policy we are in more danger of terrorism than we were prior to 9/11. Therefore, questioning any

politician on these issues is responsible. For the next months we will continue to question Majority Leader Aresimowicz on many more of his votes, policies and stances. So, to continue, did you know Joe voted for a criminal early release program (HB7104)? Do you support that? Here are some of the unintended consequences of his vote: 30,000 criminals have been released back on the streets with a recidivism rate of a low of 65 percent and as high as 80 percent. Did you know sexual predators are eligible to participate in this program? In a recent study from May 2012

to April 2015, 35 murders were committed by these “reformed” criminals. Does Joe’s vote make you and your children safer? Joe’s most insensible vote regarding criminals came after the horrific, terrifying murders of the Petit family in 2007, when Joe still voted to eliminate Connecticut’s death penalty (SB280.) If anyone deserved the death penalty it’s the two convicted murders, Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky, who will now only serve life sentences. Is that a position you would support? Joe, what say you? Scott Veley Berlin

New town story maps make for easier navigation By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen

It may be too cold for some to brave the outdoors, but for the hearty souls who can’t stand to be inside, Berlin’s various open space areas are available to navigate. And walking and hiking throughout the areas will be made a lot easier with the town’s enhanced Open Space Trails Story Maps feature. The first generation version, launched in fall 2015, was created to enable people to track their location using their smartphone. Now, people will also be able to download the maps ahead of time

instead of relying solely on their phone data. “We are basically making open space areas more accessible to the public,” said Economic Development Coordinator Jim Mahoney. The story maps are available online through the Town of Berlin website in the Conservation Commission section, as well as through the town Geographic Information System (GIS) site. However, the new version contains condensed trail descriptions for mobile users, and a geo-referencing feature. “We found that adding See Maps / Page A11

COLOR MY WORLD PROJECT

The Color My World Project at Berlin High School is a mural on the 148-foot long, temporary wall of the main corridor on the lower level of the school. Art students in Kathy Miller’s classes volunteered to sketch and paint the wall. The mural is for viewing by students and staff of Berlin High School, as it is scheduled to be dismantled soon as the building moves forward in the new construction.

this location feature has been very helpful,” Mahoney said. He noted that people have gotten lost around Ragged Mountain. With the geo-referencing element, navigation will occur even if there is no phone service. “It can be hard to get people oriented out there,” he said. All mobile users have to do is download the Avenza PDF Maps Application for their Iphone or Android phone. Then, type “Berlin” in the search bar, or the name of the specific trail. Users click on

Letters Policy the trail they want and download it to their phone to use offline. “Winter isn’t the most popular time, but we encourage people to get out there and use it,” Mahoney said. The maps are live and interactive and even include driving directions. With the town’s open space trail system becoming more popular, Mahoney said, according to recent feedback, maps are what people wanted. “Some people didn’t even know the trails were there, and don’t know about all of them yet,” he said. Recently, Kensington Orchards

on the Chamberlain Highway opened as open space, with trails leading through the old Girl Scout camp. “I think Kensington Orchards is already being used more,” Mahoney said. And several other areas in town are available for people to walk, run, and hike through. They range from easy trails such as the Beckley Quarry Conservation area and Pistol Creek, to more difficult areas like Ragged Mountain Park and Timberlin Park. Maps of all seven open space areas are available to download.

HISTORY COMES ALIVE In December, the Kensington Congregational Church welcomed visitors to “A Night in Bethlehem,” followed by a Christmas pageant. Guests visited a marketplace, where they sampled foods from the time of Jesus, practiced pottery, weaving and wool spinning, learned to write Hebrew, and played with a dreidel. A Living Nativity with live animals, was a favorite attraction. Following the marketplace events, children presented a re-enactment of the Christmas story.

Again, Berlin was hampered by numerous forfeits on its way to a 2-2 finish, but individual Redcoats dominated on the mats. Also finishing with a winning percentage of 75-percent on the day was Sebby Scott at 140 in his first full day in the varsity lineup. Newington hosted Conard to begin 2016, falling to the Chieftains, 6-2. Minutemen enter sharkinfested waters On Sunday, Jan. 3, a group of Berlin Minutemen wrestlers were eager to get back on the mats after the holiday break and traveled to Southington for the SharkFest Tournament. The lone Mighty Mites wrestler, Tyler Ebrahimi, finished second with a close 5-4 win in his final match. In the Bantam Division, Ayden Rodriguez returned to the mat after missing the start of the season and lost his first match 8-6 before winning the next two to place second. The Intermediate group was the largest on the day, as Julian Shaw placed second, Eli Ortiz placed third and Nicholas Ebrahimi and Hiram Sepulveda both finished fourth. The afternoon session saw first-year Novice wrestler Richard Bennett finish fourth after only one month of wrestling. Marshall Alleyne of the Middle School Division wrestled tough but also finished fourth on the day. Coach Mark MangiafSee Minutemen / Page A18
