vate the former station, while a new station is under construction next door. Amtrak leased the old station to the state agency. The 116-year-old building was deemed a total loss after a fire that was reported at 3:50 a.m. on Dec. 21. Firefighters arrived to find the building almost entirely engulfed in flames, Fire Chief Jim Simons said. A cause has not been determined and the investigation is ongoing, according to state and local officials.

By Lorraine Stub

For those who grew up here, the Berlin train station was part of our life story whether we were commuting, sending off relatives to school or service, traveling to NYC for the day or sitting on a bench enjoying a Dairy Queen treat with friends.

Simons said both town and state investigators are still processing material collected from the building. He had no further update. Berlin officials are leading the investigation. Fire Marshal Steve Waznia has previously said the fire likely started in the north end of the station. He couldn’t be reached for comment Friday. The only pieces of the building still intact were made of metal or stone, according to Nursick. “Anything that could burn has burned,” he said.

“Demolition debris from the building will remain on site until the salvage operation is complete and the material can be safely removed from the site,” according to a DOT statement released

Berlin Historical Society Secretary Lorraine Stub said the society has asked to be part of the conversation on the future of the site.

Anticipating the thunderous approach of an incoming train never got old. Indoors, a visitor experienced one of the last remaining intact stations in the country with its tin ceilings, curved ticket office, stained glass windows, Victorian woodwork, bricks and benches. It was the only remaining manned station of its size, and we were fortunate to have Bill Sample in charge – a man who intimately knows every train route in the country and loved sharing his knowledge of train history with others. At the station’s centennial in 2000, over a thousand visitors attended a party at the station. Many still describe it as the most memorable town celebration in their lifetime. Since the fire, people are sharing their memories online and in shops and diners. In a season of hope, we’ve been dealt a crushing blow. The grief is similar to losing a beloved friend. The train station was one of our few remaining iconic public buildings and we had great expectations for its reuse. I’d been doggedly following up with the state DOT and those involved who were assuring us the restoration would be completed See History, A9

COMMENTARY

You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone ell family, who had moved to town from England in the 1960s, were seeing a visitor off, back to the old country. They were all standing in the waiting room when a big flake of custard-colored paint from the long-neglected ceiling came down on someone’s head.

By Glenn Richter Record-Journal staff

My mother’s funeral was held on the day after Christmas, eight years ago, and a couple of days later my sister, my brother and I were sitting on a hard wooden bench at the Berlin depot, waiting for the train that would take him, station by station, town by town, on the first leg of his trip back to California. Everything then was much as we all remembered it: the rough wooden floors of the waiting room; the schoolhouse lamps hanging by chains from the tin ceiling; the stationmaster’s booth, covered in who knows how many coats of green or brown enamel, with a small window marked “TICKETS.” Years earlier, the steam radiators would have been hissing and banging on such a cold winter day, but the old boiler had long since given

That was during the many decades when the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Co. always seemed to be on the brink of bankruptcy and never seemed to be doing any maintenance work. The next part of the Mitchell story sounds like something out of a Marx Brothers movie, but supposedly one of them asked a question at the “TICKETS” window and was told to go around to the “INFORMATION” window (formerly the “TELEGRAPH” window), which he did, whereupon the same railroad guy turned around and said, “May I help you?” And I remember that the depot had one of the last

pay phones in town. And clean bathrooms. And, once upon a time, baggage carts on the platform and signs for the Railway Express Agency. I also remember that for a long time there was a placard that said: “Click Along With Us … And Train Yourself to Relax.” But it wasn’t some glossy ad from corporate headquarters; this sign had been hand-crafted, with marking-pen letters and faint but visible pencil lines. It was a charming, Mom & Pop touch, wordplay and all, for a branch office of a large but failing corporation. Now the building, or what’s left of it, is owned by Amtrak. A shiny new station has already been built, a clone of the ones in Meriden and Wallingford, so they’ll probably just bulldoze the ruins for more parking. Within six days, Larissa Podermanski’s adoptive and biological families put together a complete wedding at the Norwich Inn and Spa and the couple honeymooned in Poland, where Larissa’s bone cancer took hold. The couple had to make difficult financial decisions. Martin Podermanski sold his trucking business to help his wife with her many medical needs. She had founded the nonprofit Community Navigators Inc., which brings individualized services to people with intellectual dis-

abilities in area communities. Martin Podermanski is now operating the business with her mentoring. The couple also have a GoFundMe page to help with the uncovered medical expenses.

Quality Homecare for Seniors

Bob is a big boy that wandered into a back yard and decided he would take up residence there. As much as the family wanted him, they could not keep him because of allergies. He is brown and white and friendly but does not like to be picked up. Holly was left outside the shelter. She is a very affectionate brown tabby, about 10 months old. She prefers to be held rather than pose for photos. She is a sweet cat who will light up your day. For more information, call 860-828-5287 and fill out an online application at www.fobac.org.

Tuesday, Jan. 10, 6:30 p.m. - Reviving 5000 years of Chinese Civilization. Presentation explores Chinese culture. Registration is required.
