The median age of Berlin residents is 43. Median household income is just over $80,000. The town’s predicted growth rate out to 2015 is 1.5 percent. That data comes from the Connecticut Economic Resource Center, Inc. which has just released the latest metrics to its town profiles. These profiles detail demographic, economic, housing, education and workplace data for Connecticut’s municipalities. The full report is available

The librarian at Berlin High School has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship for a three week summer program on Mark Twain. David Scannell, library media specialist at BHS was selected from a national pool of applicants for a summer program focusing on a pair of Mark Twain’s books: Roughing It and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. The program is entitled, “Mark Twain Scannell and the Culture of Progress. The three week program begins in July and splits its time between two locales. First, Scannell will travel to Virginia City Nev. to work with Roughing It. Then, he returns to the Mark Twain House in Hartford to work with A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. According to the program’s prospectus, the books will be examined “within the broad themes of industrialization, technological innovation, territorial expansion, and imperialism which transformed 19th century America. At each site, the group of 16 participants will work with the top experts in Twain studies, make use of original documents and manuscripts, and visit locations where Twain lived and wrote. Scannell, taught English at BHS beginning in 1980, and has served as the school’s librarian for the past three years. He said he hopes to bring back to “a richer context for students’ studies of 19th century America’s society and literature and to use this summer experience to further integrate the library into the total high school curriculum.

Superintendents’ network puts focus on McGee By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen

Half of the sessions are clinical examinations of a school to focus on a problem related to the theme of instructional improvement that is posed by the district superintendent. For this visit, Erwin put forth a “theory of action”: “If we enhance our knowledge of effective teaching and support collaborative work through high-level instructional practices, then student performance and achievement will increase.” In terms of professional development relevant to the “problem of instructional practice”, notes from the study state the school has had limited training in the areas of differentiated instruction. Test scores show McGee students have made excellent progress in all ar-

McGee’s goals, set for this school year, will be assessed by the end of the year. “Our work this year is to establish an articulated sequence of research and presentation skills for all students to learn,” according to the report. Superintendent of Schools David Erwin hosted a day of instructional rounds at McGee Middle School for the Superintendents’ Network last month. The Erwin group is one of two superintendents’ networks under the auspices of the Connecticut Center for School Change. The site visit included superintendents from more than 10 other districts (such as East Hartford, Norwich, Granby, Stamford, Fairfield, Southington) and also a visiting professor from Harvard University: Lee Teitel, one of two experts from Harvard who work with the network. “We focus on one thing,” Erwin said of the daylong instructional rounds. The group study is a chance to focus on classroom techniques, student progress and any concerns about what may be interfering with that progress. Principal Scott Ratchford and Board of Education President Gary Brochu also participated. The Superintendents’ Network is a clinical study group of superintendents guided by Harvard University professors, Teitel and Richard F. Elmore, who focus on improving instructional practice.

The 26 superintendents currently participating in the two networks represent geographically and demographically diverse districts: twelve of the superintendents are women; three are African-American; one is Latino. A group of 12 met for the Berlin rounds. According to information provided by the CCSC, the group helps break down the isolationism of superintendents, and individual districts, and promotes sharing and peer support. Superintendents meet throughout the year to discuss ways to improve student achievement and connect Elmore’s theoretical work about accountability, distributed leadership and professional development to their actual practice.

Prescription drug take back day

Berlin Police in cooperation with the Drug Enforcement Agency is conducting the second annual “Take Back” initiative to remove expired and unused prescription drugs from homes on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Town Hall, 240 Kensington Rd. Last year Berlin’s efforts collected 86 pounds of drugs. The service is free and anonymous and no questions will be asked. Residents can drop the drugs in a curbside box without getting out of their vehicle. The initiative seeks to prevent increased pill abuse, theft and environmental problems. This national initiative will provide an opportunity for the public to surrender pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for destruction. Unused medicine that is flushed down the drain can result in contamination of groundwater and surface water. For more information, contact Lt. Jim Gosselin at (860) 828-7184.

Historical society needs donations

The Berlin Historical Society, at the corner of Main and Peck Streets, has scheduled its annual tag sale for Saturday, June 11. The Society is looking for donations for this event. Items can be brought to the museum on Saturdays between 1 and 4 p.m. No clothing or electronic equipment. For more information, call the museum at (860) 828-5114 or Kate and Steve Kearns at (860) 828-1891.

grand list” (which excludes non taxed property such as churches) is “a little above state average,” Shannon said. The report provides further information on education, government, labor force and economics. While CERC performs continuous updates to town profiles, this latest update is substantial with 40 new data points in each town profile. These include new 2010 estimates for all 11 demographic items; updates to the top five grand list property owners; the school district education data; all items in the government section; new data using the Connecticut’s Office of Policy and Management house sales database; and other housing statistics from Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. It also includes new employment and labor force data. Although the town profiles do not provide rankings among the towns, they do however show the county and state data for relative comparisons.

Former BHS athlete in accident Ryan Lee, a 2009 graduate of Berlin High School, was struck by a taxi in Manhattan Sunday and sustained serious injuries. At press time, The Citizen was unable to confirm additional information regarding the incident or condition of the Long Island University sophomore. For updates go to www.berlincitizen.com. Lee, 19, a popular, two-sport athlete during his years at BHS, competed in golf and basketball. He continued his golf career at LIU. Berlin High School boys golf coach John Line expressed shock regarding Lee’s hospitalization. News of the incident was reported in the media and, online, Facebook friends offered support as word spread. “This is not an easy thing for the team, obviously,” said Line. “He (Lee) has been at the course from time to time this spring, and is part of the fabric at Timberlin.” As a high school senior, Lee was one of the top golfers in the state. As a junior, he helped lead the Redcoats to a state championship. “At matches, Ryan was fiercely competitive and enjoyed the competition. He was a good sport about it, but he was intense,” Line said. — Nick Carroll

Bobby’s walk

Berlin resident Bob LaMontagne, who was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, takes a moment to pose with his fiancée, Marianne Sniadack also of Berlin, at the 2011 Travelers Walk MS on the campus of the University of Connecticut in West Hartford. LaMontagne and Sniadack are members of the Bobby’s Walk fundraising team. The team has raised $1,900, so far, exceeding the original team goal of $1,500. More than 9,100 participants stepped out for the 2011 Travelers Walk MS, presented by North American Power, at 10 sites statewide, April 10, and in Westport, April 3. To date the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter has raised $1.1 million toward its goal of raising $1.4 million to help advance research and provide local programs and services for people in the state living with multiple sclerosis. Walk MS fundraising continues through Friday, May 20. For more information or to donate, please visit www.ctfightsMS.org. Check us out: www.berlincitizen.com

Without the support of his wife, Faith, daughters Alex and Lizzy, and his parents Howie and

Peggy, Asal said maintaining Ken’s Cards “would just be undoable.” Asal’s shop, open six days a week, contains so much merchandise the owner has trouble finding room for it all. Ken’s Cards also has an online presence, with its own website and a Facebook page. Baseball cards are “by far” Asal’s biggest seller, but Ken’s Cards has much more. “Ken’s Cards & Collectibles started out as a small baseball card shop, but

The 201 New Britain Road store is three times the size of the previous location. Heading into its second decade, Asal doesn’t have any major changes planned for Ken’s Cards. Asal said give Ken’s Cards a family feel. “That’s the whole point of having a hobby shop. It’s like going to the movies; it’s a shared, social experience.” A person buying cards online “can’t duplicate that. It can’t be done.” Before going into business for himself, Asal, a longtime card collector, worked for a rental car company. “I needed a change, something I could do for the rest of my life,” he said. Ken’s Cards’ first home was a tight 450-square foot space down the road from its current home. Not knowing whether the business was sustainable, for 16 months after it opened, Asal maintained his car rental job and

A chat with the new state senator

State Senator Terry Gerratana, representing District 6 (New Britain, Berlin and part of Farmington) was at The Berlin Citizen, last week for an informal meeting with residents. A Democrat, the senator was elected in a special election in February when she replaced former Senator Donald DeFronzo who served from 2003-2010. Several town officials, including Mayor Adam Salina, stopped by. Gerratana spoke with about two dozen visitors and conversations touched on a variety of topics. A 75 year-old woman talked about her struggles living on a small retirement income with taxes rising. A 14 yearold student discussed her plans to become a marine biologist. A teacher offered her perspective on education. One man asked about the status of union concessions and another wanted to know

Poetry Month inspires youngsters’ lyrical side The Berlin-Peck Memorial Library recently sponsored a poetry contest for children in grades one through six in recognition of National Poetry Month. Established by the Academy of American Poets, National Poetry Month has been celebrated since 1996. The academy states its concept as a chance “to widen the attention of individuals and the media—to the art of poetry, to living poets, to our complex poetic heritage, and to poetry books and journals of wide aesthetic range and concern. We hope to increase the visibility and availability of poetry in popular culture while acknowledging and celebrating poetry’s ability to sustain itself in the many places where it is practiced and appreciated.” The winning poems are below, there were also the following Honorable Mentions: Maddie Holt, grade 3; Alex Halkias, grade 4; Sierra Villella, grade 4; Emilia Miloszewski, grade 4; Jenna Eve Santana, grade 5. In keeping with the library’s and academy’s goal to “introduce more Americans to the pleasures of reading poetry,” The Citizen is pleased to publish the following winning entries in the library’s poetry contest. Adoption Continued from page 1 the kind of success animal control has had — with help from Friends of Berlin Animal Control — in placing animals. The Annual Town Report was issued earlier this month, for the budget hearing, and copies are now available at Town Hall, the Parks and Recreation department and the Town Clerk’s office. The town’s adoption rate for dogs is nearly 95 percent, with more than half of the approximately 75 animals, impounded annually, returned to their owners. Only a handful are euthanized and this is due to temperment or illness. The rest are adopted. Each year about 80 cats are impounded, but in this case, few are redeemed by their owners — less than one. About 60 are adopted. Many cats are found dead or severely injured, often hit by a car, and those must be euthanized. The adoption rate for the remaining cats is 99 percent. A section of the report, called “Happy Tails”, de-

Pookie scribes pets who found a home through adoption. Champ, who is seen on the town report cover, is a Lab mix that was rescued in a parking lot on a cold day. He only weighed 37 pounds. A golf ball-sized tumor was removed from his front paw. Eventually, Champ was adopted by a teacher from Massachusetts. “More Tails” is about town employees and animals they’ve adopted. John and Antoinette Pajor, who work in maintenance and community services respectively, adopted Chessie from the Berlin shelter. “She still loves to look out from underneath the covers,” they said. Dorothy Chase, at the Berlin Water Control office, adopted Oliver, also from the Berlin shelter. Oliver “is now living like a king,” Chase said. Petsmart and Labieniec’s Feed and Grain Store are two of the places where animals are showcased. FOBAC pays for some veterinary expense and helps publicize the animal for adoption. People interested in adopting are asked to fill out a questionare and for a veterinarian reference, among other information. “Our goal is that the adoption be a good match for both the adopter and the animal,” according to staff. Those interested in adopting can make an apointment with animal control officers by calling (860) 828-7055. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, Sunday and holidays, the facility is open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pets looking for homes are also shown on adoptapet.com and petfinder.com. Coats’ Notes

Match medalist Alyssa Scheyd fired a 41 and the Berlin High School girls golf team easily downed Manchester, 182-252, at Timberlin Monday. Next in line for the Lady Redcoats (2-0) was Victoria Fagan (43), Emily Stickel (48) and Caroline D’Attilio (50). “Alyssa and Victoria are really playing well, particularly for this early in the season,” said BHS coach Jim Barnes. “I fully expect to see both girls break 40 in the very near future. They both have all the tools necessary to break 40, consistently. They just need to avoid mental mistakes, no double bogeys, and believe in how good they really are.” Paced by match medalist

Kevin Jud’s 36, the Berlin High School boys golf team improved to 4-0 with a 155-187 victory over Plainville last week at Tunxis Plantation. Rounding out the Redcoat slate was Jeremy DeSimone (38), Connor Bowen (38), Brendon Hull (39) and Chris Martino (42). Last week was a good one for Makayla Harris and the Berlin High School softball team. The Lady Redcoats blasted Glastonbury, 11-2, and Middletown, 12-1, to improve 4-2. Against Middletown, Harris, a freshman, went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and grand slam. She also drove in six runs and scored twice. “She has been a welcome addition to the varsity team,” BHS coach Jason

Pires said of Harris. “She is having issues, at times, adjusting to high school pitching, but she has also had some huge efforts so far this year.” In the field, Harris, a first baseman, had committed just one error through six games. She can pitch as well. “If she continues to work hard and grow, she will be a fantastic player now and in the future,” said Pires. Game-winner Monique St. Jarre was dominant against Middletown. The junior carried a no-hitter into the seventh, and struck out eight. It took six tries, but the Berlin High School girls lacrosse team chalked one up in the win column. The Lady Redcoats topped West Haven, 7-2, last week to improve to 1-5 on the season. Cassidy Goodwin had four goals and Kira Eleveld added two to lead the victors. Shannon Murphy accounted for

Berlin High School’s Alyssa Scheyd tees off at Timberlin Monday. Scheyd shot a 41 to earn match medalist honors that day. Berlin’s other score. Also coming through for the Lady Redcoats was Robyn Riggot, who caused a team-high five turnovers, and goalie Kasandra Colasanti (9 saves). The day before besting West Haven, Berlin came up on the wrong end of a 14-1 decision in a match against

Hall. Riggot scored the Lady Redcoats’ lone goal. Colasanti made 16 saves. The Berlin High School girls track and field team was well-represented at the Irv Black Invitational, held

Berlin Little League held Opening Day ceremonies April 17 at the Bill Petit Complex. On Opening Day 2010, Andrew Charbonneau, pictured, hit a BLL record four home runs. It turned out to the the trip to nowhere for the Berlin and Southington High baseball teams. Berlin High coach Leo Veleas has put together trips for his Redcoats and another team to Cooperstown, N.Y., the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, for several years. He did it again this year, taking along the Southington Blue Knights for a game on Abner Doubleday Field on the property of the Hall of Fame slated for this past Saturday. But the lousy weather that has plagued this part of the country washed out the teams’ planned game. “We drove up Friday and on Saturday it rained and snowed in Cooperstown,” said Veleas. “So we got up, had breakfast and drove home.” But the Redcoats found a break in the weather Mon-

day night and played their scheduled Central Connecticut Conference South Division game with Bristol Central and won, 4-2, under the lights. Or perhaps, as Veleas said, Central lost the game more than Berlin won it. “We got two hits — two hits,” he said. “They made four errors and really gave us the game. Maybe it was the first day back to school after the vacation, I don’t know, but there were passed balls, hit batters, and heck, if they made plays, they probably would have beat us.” Austin Barnes (3-0) did his part to pick up the win and Central did its part by handing the Redcoats scoring opportunities. Berlin cashed in enough of them to win. But none of this is making Veleas very happy. “We’re 6-1 and we’re not giving any of the wins back,” he said. “But I don’t know how we’re doing it. We make a lot of mistakes and it’s like playing with dynamite.

Sooner or later, this is going to blow up on us.” He went on to say that what is particularly frustrating is his club’s penchant for making mental miscues. “We’re trying to eliminate — I don’t know what else to call them — mental mistakes,” Veleas said. “We’ve got guys who will take a called third strike, then go out on the field and let a ground ball go between their legs because they’re taking the at-bat on the field with them. That happened to us tonight and that’s got to stop.” Veleas conceded that there have been times that his club played well in its six wins, but he also said that the team has also won games — like the Central game — it might well have, and maybe should have, lost. Berlin was slated to host Bristol Eastern Wednesday. The Redcoats will be home again Friday night with Platt of Meriden.

The Lady Redcoats registered nine Top 20 finishes, including five Top 10 showings. “The weather was miserable, but the girls toughed it out, and in many cases, put up season-best performances,” said Berlin coach Steve Soucy.
