Get involved with Relay for Life By Melissa Chicker The Berlin Citizen
Berlin’s Relay for Life is two weeks away and there is still plenty of time to get involved. This year the event is held at the Berlin Lion’s Fairgrounds Saturday, May 19, to Sunday, May 20. It begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday with opening ceremonies at 12:30 p.m. This weekend is an opportunity to raise awareness and honor cancer survivors and remember those lost. Each dollar raised will help save lives for those diagnosed with cancer. The Relay for Life is an overnight event where teams of people camp out. Mem-
bers of each team take turns walking around a track for the duration of the event. Food, games, and entertainment are provided along with fundraising opportunities. So far 437 participants of 37 teams in town have raised $33,700. If you can’t be involved there are plenty of ways to donate. Fundraisers before the relay include a tag sale, sponsored by Relay Team Phyllis on Saturday, May 12 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 114 Harvest Hill Rd. and the Berlin Lions Club sponsored Wine Tasting on Saturday, May 12, from 7 to 10 p.m. The Lions will donate five dollars from the sale of each ticket sold to Berlin Relay for Life.
Cancer resources at the library Berlin residents will be participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at the Berlin fairgrounds. According to the American Cancer Society, half of all men and one-third of all women in the U.S. will develop cancer during their lifetimes. Whether it’s a family member, a friend or even ourselves, these statistics demonstrate that most of us will be affected by cancer in some way. Whether you seek medical information, coping strategies, spiritual guidance, or perhaps a memoir by someone who’s “been there”, here are just some of the cancer-related materials your library provides: America’s Top Doctors for Cancer by John Connolly Anticancer with Dr. David Servan (DVD) Dr. Servan addresses the simple steps you can take to give your body a fighting chance through prevention, integrative oncology, a healthy lifestyle and the right foods. Beyond the Magic Bullet: The Anti-Cancer Cocktail by Raymond Chang While the world continues to look for a “magic bullet” that will defeat all cancers, Dr. Chang takes a penetrating look at a bold new way of treating and defeating the disease with what is already available today. A Book of Miracles: Inspiring True Stories of Healing, Gratitude, and Love by Bernie Siegel The best-selling author of Love, Medicine, and Miracles shares a treasury of inspiring true stories about patients who have pursued physical, spiritual and psychological healing through his programs. Breast Cancer: What You Need to Know—Now by The American Cancer Society Children with Cancer: A Reference Guide for Parents by Jeanne Munn Bracken A wealth of up-to-date information essential for anyone who wishes to help a child or family through this ordeal. Mothers support community By Melissa Chicker The Berlin Citizen
Raising Berlin, a non-profit organization of Berlin mothers, just celebrated its third year anniversary. Raising Berlin was started in April of 2009 by Lisa Toussaint as a community based way to help out locally. The organization, which has
grown to 60 members, also is a creative outlet for mothers to take time out of their hectic lives. “I felt like the town needed more community and more events to bring the community together,” Toussaint said. “Our organization is different than other groups. Our main mission is to establish a way to show kids and other
moms what it means to be a part of the Berlin community.” Toussiant said the group brings their children to organized events to show the children how a community works together. One of the biggest events the group organizes is the tree lighting ceremony in Veterans Memorial Park the week after Thanksgiving. The group has been putting on the event, since 2009, with the help of the Kensington Fire Department. “There is always a huge crowd,” Toussaint said. “The tree lighting put a lot of attention on the group.” The group gets its children involved by collecting for food pantries and collecting change to donate to the Upbeat program. Around the holidays, stocking stuffers are assembled for families in need. Toussiant said they try to support all town events, including the Kiwanis Club booth at the Berlin Fair. Future events expected See Difference, page 8

“It felt important to honor and show them how they have aged in a healthy way and how we can learn from it as a society,” she said. “With the start of this event, I feel like we are on to something.” Stanchick, a 31 year volunteer at the Midstate Medical Center gift shop and has served on the hospital’s committees and auxiliary, and said she is honored to receive this award. “I would like to share the award with all the other volunteers I have worked with and met who have become my friends over the years,” she

Margarete Stanchick, in her 90s, has accumulated over 11,000 hours in volunteering, something that’s become meaningful in her life. For this reason, Stanchick, along with Elliot and Marsha Cohen of Berlin were three of 15 senior citizens picked as Wisdom Award recipients by the Central Connecticut Senior Health Services. The awards celebrate Connecticut seniors 70 years or older who model the essence of healthy aging through their actions, volunteerism, and ways they continue to inspire. The first annual Wisdom Awards were held April 22, at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. Emceeing the event was news anchor, Al Terzi and Dr. Bernie Siegel, author and physician, served as honorary chair. The event’s signature sponsor was American Savings Foundation. Julie Norko, director of development and philanthropy of the Central Connecticut Senior Health Services said the goal is to celebrate seniors who continue to contribute whether it’s great or small.

said. “It’s very rewarding and I’ve never been bored with what I do.” Stanchick was nominated by Diamond Belejack, manager of volunteer services at Midstate. “She continues to be one of our foremost loyal and dedicated volunteers and an inspiration to us all,” Belejack said. Elliot, a retired pharmacist, and his wife Marsha Cohen are winners of the couple’s award by becoming role models of healthy aging, keeping fit and staying engaged in volunteering and traveling. The two volunteer their time at the Joslin Center and Good Life Fitness Center at The Hospital for Central Connecticut. “It is quite an honor and was unexpected,” Elliot said. They credit graceful aging to staying active, eating healthy, and being involved. The two have a love for traveling and in June will be taking a trip to Russia to celebrate their 45 marriage anniversary. The two also volunteer at the Petit Race, benefiting the Petit Family Foundation and the memories of the late Jennifer Hawke-Petit, Hayley and Michaela Petit. The pair is active in Synagogue, and Marsha has been the president of the PTA at Griswold Elementary School. The sold out event received 40 nominations from senior citizens who have shown graceful aging and what it is like to inspire others. Nominations can come from friends, family, neighbors, children, or anyone who they inspire.

Small motels hold their own as highway rushes by By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen
There are lots of small, old-school motels along the local stretch of the Berlin Turnpike. This list includes: Mount Royal, Comfort Motel, Berlin Motor Inn, Little Village Inn, Deylin Motel, Johnson’s Motel, Coronet Motel, Plaza Motel and the Twin Spruce Motel. A few establishments take a minimalist approach and simply state their presence as “Motel” or “efficiency units”. There are a couple of higher-end hostelries, such as Best Western Plus and the
Days Inn formerly the Hawthorn Inn Lodge. But nothing harkens back to the original feel of the highway then the earlier “travel lodge” versions, the kitschy collection of colorful rooms for rent. Even on a busy highway, the motel business can be tough, but it appears owners are holding their own and confident rooms will be in demand come summer. “Business is okay. It’s been up and down,” said KT Miar, who has owned the Deylin Motel, 1191 Berlin Turnpike, since the 1980s. Some of her colleagues describe the re-

cent economic cycles motel owners have experienced as “hard or soft”. But, in any case, she’s certain “summer will be better.” Kamkubem Patel operates the Little Village Inn, 1401 Berlin Turnpike, with his wife Jayamtilal Patel. The current owners bought the 11-room inn in 2008. Its layout consists of small cottage-like buildings. He said business has been good and he’d had six guests the night before. “Summer, business will be better.” That seems typical, as See Motels, page 8

Readers’ Poll Here are The Berlin Citizen poll results from last week:
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms...
The question was: Do you think the town should have a leash law for dogs? Yes, I think this way it will protect the dogs and pedestrians from getting injured by other dogs. 59% No, I think dogs should be allowed to run freely through a park, that’s what dogs enjoy doing. 7% I think that we shouldn’t have a leash law, but it would be nice to have a designated dog park. 11% I don’t think there needs to be a law; owners should know to keep their dogs on a leash. 23%

back at Bethany again this year,” D’Eugenio said. “The sanctuary is a glorious place for this musical program and we always receive great support from the Berlin and surrounding area.” “The Chorale has really embraced the challenge of adapting to the phonetic structure of German,” said Patricia Barbano, GMC language and vocal coach and soSee Chorale, page 18

To a Dear and Brilliant Woman, My Mother By Brittany Whiteley Special to The Citizen The sound of your everlasting voice, Comforts me like the bluebird’s song of a new day. The gentle touch of your palm gracing my hair, Warms me like the sunshine upon our similar face. You- are a rose in battle, only drawing blood when threatened – Proving that you are a garden of wisdom, of which, I have yet to learn. A sliver of light in the darkness of our world, is what you are. Even during times of descending rain, leaves, and snow – You shelter me like the tallest tree. But through the many
leaves, there is but only one root. A seed, to a bud, growing to become the most elegant of flowers. It grows and grows from the root of your heart, to the root of my heart. It reaches out towards the sky, but the soil clings for it to stay a little longer For it is its greatest accomplishment. You- are the soil and sunshine of my world, Providing me with the nourishment I need to one day, Be as beautiful a flower as you. -Submitted to The Citizen to say Happy Mothers Day

Malloy announced that five Connecticut small businesses, including Berlin, have qualified for assistance through the state’s Small Business Express Program. The program was created as a part of the bipartisan jobs bill passed during last year’s jobs special session to encourage business expansion and job growth. “The jobs created by retail and service companies are often the product of hardworking and determined selfemployed entrepreneurs,” Malloy said. “The Small Business Express Program is proving very responsive to this important sector of our economy, one that has tremendous potential for job growth and retention.” In total, the program will provide $100 million to help the state’s small businesses hire more employees and fund capital investments. nomic and Community Development offers loans and matching grants to Connecticut companies with fewer than 50 employees at the time of application. The Music People!, Inc. of Berlin will retain 48 jobs and anticipates hiring for eight positions as the company extends its 32 year track record as a worldwide leader in the pro-audio field. The largest supplier of music stands and accessories in the United States, The Music People!, Inc. has a globally recognized brand and exports its products to 39 countries. “I’m delighted that this longtime and successful Berlin business is receiving a state grant,” said State Senator Terry Gerratana (DNew Britain, Berlin and Farmington). “This is exactly the type of business we had in mind when we passed the jobs bill in October and we hope to build on that success this year by doubling the size of the companies that are eligible for such state assistance.”
The company is receiving a job creation matching grant, equaling its investment of $90,275, for information technology, training, and marketing. “This job creation matching grant of $90,275 is great news for both The Music People!, Inc. and Berlin,” said State Representative Joseph Aresimowicz (D-Berlin, Southington). “There is no more important challenge facing us than job retention and job creation in Connecticut. The matching grant helps the company retain 48 jobs and anticipates the hiring for eight positions, an investment that makes sense and recognizes the great track record of this Berlinbased company.” Other towns qualified for the grant include, Mansfield, Meriden, Stamford and Westport. For more information on EXP or to apply for the program, visit the Small Business Express Program web page or contact Michelle Lugo at DECD (860) 270-8052 or Michelle.Lugo@ct.gov.

Olga Ljungholm, director
of the Bethany Music Series, as well as the Minister of Music at Bethany Covenant Church said having the GMC come to Bethany Covenant once again is truly a treat. “We hope that old friends and new will take this opportunity to come out to our glorious sanctuary and enjoy an evening with this local, musical gem; clearly one of the best large choral groups in the state,” he said. The Bethany Music Series concludes its season with the Alla Breve Consort present-
ing “Baroque and Blue” on Sunday, May 22, at 4:00 p.m. The Greater Middletown Chorale is a non-profit auditioned symphonic chorus committed to excellence in singing and performing choral masterworks and other outstanding music for all generations of listeners. Council sets budget at $73.4 By Melissa Chicker The Berlin Citizen
would not be significant.” The amount cut was $88,992 from the town’s interest savings, which will put off issuing bonds that would pay for several town constructions from May be moved to September. The council voted 5-2 in favor, with councilors Dave Evans and Eric Buhrendorf casting the opposed votes. Evans said he felt further cuts can be made from various areas including town wide expenses, while the majority of the council felt now is not the time to be making big cuts, as the mill rate must be set by May 10. “I don’t feel comfortable at this point going back at this
The Town Council met on May 1 to adopt the budget set at $73.4 million with a mill rate of 25.15, a .65 percent increase. The new budget was set after voters rejected the original budget of $73.5 on April 24. “I think the people who voted on the budget are the 3.5 percent that would reject any budget,” said Councilman and Budget Chair William Rasmussen. “With that in mind, the silent majority of 96 percent of the public were okay with what was proposed. Any reductions we make at this point
point and undoing what has already been done,” Salina said. Salina said lowering the mill rate by even a tenth of a mill would cause major impacts on reducing the budget. Less than 10 percent of the town registered voters voted April 24 against the proposed budget of $73.5 million requested by the Town Council. The final vote was 457 opposed and 429 in favor of the proposed increase. According to the town Register of Voters, only 6.7 percent of the town’s 13,066 voters went to the polls to cast their ballots.

Marquis medals twice; Rybka rolls on By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
Paced by match medalist Ryan Marquis’ even-par 36, the boys golf team handled Maloney, 159-92, at Hunter to improve to 12-3. “Ryan has been steady all year, and it fell into place for him today,” said Berlin coach John Line, pointing out that Marquis’ round included just one bogey. “He doesn’t hit it as far as some of the others, but he takes advantages of opportunities and stays focused.” Also scoring for the Redcoats was Connor Bowen (40), Pat Bostrom (41) and Jeremy DeSimone (42). Berlin went on to defeat Middletown, 160-198, at Lyman Orchards. Marquis and DeSimone were co-match medalists, each with 39. “Jeremy has been hitting the ball well,” said Line. “Spring golf on the greens is always an adventure, and he has felt the brunt of that. Today he started to put it together.” Rounding out the Redcoat scoring slate was Bowen (40) and Bostrom (42). The girls golf team stayed undefeated on the year with an impressive 163-221 victory over Conard at Timberlin. Match medalist, Berlin’s Julia Kemmling fired a 39. Teammates Victoria Fagan and Emily Stickel were close behind with 40s. Ashley D’Attilio was next in line for the Lady Redcoats with a 44. “I’ve said this since the start of the season, these girls and this team have the potential to be really special. Today was special indeed,” said BHS coach Jim Barnes. “Any team that shoots a 163 on the back nine at Timberlin is approaching greatness in girls high school golf. I don’t know this for a fact, but I have to believe today’s result is one of the best team scores against par in the his-

The locals prevailed 178-197 at Timberlin to improve to 8-0. Kemmling and Northwest Catholic’s Sadie Martinez tied for medalist honors with 42s. Also scoring for the victors was Stickel (45), Fagan (45) and D’Attilio (46). Dan Rombola prevailed in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, but that was the only win Berlin could muster as the locals fell to Middletown, 6-1, in boys tennis. Redcoat Matt Trevethan forced a third set, but lost that one, 6-1. Berlin nearly halted its winless skid in its next outing, but was edged by Bristol Central, 4-3. Rombola (6-1, 6-2), Mike Gurrieri (6-4, 6-3) and Trevethan (6-3, 6-1) picked up wins for the locals. The Redcoats would fall to 0-11 on the year with a 6-1 loss to RHAM. Rombola (6-1, 6-1) was, once again, a winner. The girls tennis team crept closer to the .500 mark
with a 6-1 victory over Middletown. The victors swept in doubles play. The winning tandems were Meg Pitkin and Kelly Josephson (6-1, 60), Stephanie Zembko and Caroline Zembko (6-0, 6-2) and Emma Johnson and Autumn Edelson (6-1, 6-3). Prevailing in singles action for Berlin was Eva Ryb-
ka (6-1, 6-2), Kelly Byrnes (62, 6-4) and Monica Sirera (63, 4-6, 6-4). The Lady Redcoats went on to even their record at 4-4 with a 5-2 victory over Bristol Central. Once again, Berlin swept in doubles play. Pitkin and Josephson won 6-1, 6-0, the Zembko’s prevailed 6-1, 7-6, 6-4, and Johnson and Edelson rolled, 6-0, 6-0. Also earning wins was Rybka (6-2, 6-0) and Byrnes (6-1, 6-1). The Lady Redcoats went on to drop a 4-3 decision to RHAM. Picking up wins for the locals was Rybka (6-2, 6-0) and the doubles teams of Pitkin and Josephson (6-1, 6-1) and Johnson and Edelson (6-3 57, 7-6 (11-9)). The softball team chalked up back-to-back victories over Coginchaug, 8-7 in 10 innings, and E.O. Smith, 5-1, to improve to 8-2. Berlin generated 12 hits against E.O. Smith. Brittany Labbadia came through with a double and a triple, and scored twice, and Erin McKinnon generated three hits and two RBI.
Annie Asal was the winning pitcher. Katie Guild earned the pitching victory against Coginchaug. Callie Veach and Katherine Burek came through with clutch hits for the Lady Redcoats. Veach drove in the tieing run in the ninth, and Burek had the game-winning hit. The girls track and field team generated many highlights in a 105-45 victory over Platt. Shannon Mahoney finished first in triple jump and second in long jump, notching her best performance in long jump (147). Briana Cass finished first in the 100 hurdles, second in triple jump and third in high jump. In other action, Kristen Madeia bested the 1,600 field and Nicole Sylvain finished first in the 3,200. Also picking up first-place points for Berlin was the 4x400 and 4x800 relays, Catherine Voelpel (200, 400), Alex Carbonell (800), Kate Piotrowicz (shot put, discus) and Taylor Lupini (high jump).

Berlin 9 lose wild one to Devils By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen Berlin-Plainville High School baseball battles are legend. And last week provided one of the more wild matchups between the old foes. In a game that was halted for nearly a half hour when the lights cut out in the 10th inning, Plainville prevailed, 5-4 in 11 innings, May 2 at Sage Park’s Zipadelli Field. “When a Berlin-Plainville game is going to happen, make sure you get there early and get a good seat,” said PHS coach Lou Mandeville, who played for the Blue Devils in the 80s. “You’re going to want a great view for what you’re about to see.” That certainly was the case last week. With the score knotted at four in the top
of the 11th, Plainville’s Marc DeMartinis stepped to the plate with two outs and none on, and was hit by a pitch. He then stole second and, with the count at two and two, was driven home on a single by Tyler Favreau. But the host Redcoats had some fight left in them. Berlin’s leadoff man was hit by a pitch in the final frame but, with one out, was picked off by catcher Chris Kuzia attempting to steal second. The marathon game finally came to an end on a fly out to right-fielder Dean DeMartinis, who had another memorable moment, in the seventh, when he threw the potential game-winning run out at home. Plainville (8-3) has been riding high as of late. Berlin, on the other hand, has not. The Redcoats fell to 4-8 with the loss.

College Corner
Tyler Kradas completed his first year of lacrosse at Mitchell College in New London. After playing several sports growing up, Kradas found his true athletic passion in lacrosse. He played six years for Scott Rossi’s Berlin Lacrosse Club, and excelled in the sport. His shot to goal now clocks 92
miles-per-hour. When his junior year at BHS rolled around, Kradas began searching for colleges that not only had his major of Kinesiology and Nutritionist but that had a lacrosse team. Mitchell College fit the bill. Kradas is the first BHS lacrosse player to continue his career in college.
Former Berlin High School lacrosse star Tyler Kradas has continued his career at New London’s Mitchell College. For Kradas, lacrosse runs in the family. His grandfather played, his brother Jordan plays for BHS, he has a cousin who plays on the Berlin Junior team, and another cousin who played for Lewis Mills in Burlington. Jess Lavoie was named Young Player of the Year at the annual banquet for the Quinnipiac University men’s and women’s soccer teams. A freshman midfielder, Lavoie made 15 starts, the most of any Quinnipiac freshman during 2011. For her efforts, she was named to the All-NEC Rookie team. “Jess had an outstanding first year as a player with Quinnipiac, QU coach Dave Clarke said. “She was a very consistent player in the cen-
ter of midfield and despite her inexperience she played well in every game. She is a 90-minute player and a key member of the team and will be for the next three seasons. Berlin High School senior
Eva Rybka will continue her tennis career, on scholarship, at the University of New Haven. Rybka is a three-year varsity starter, and maintains a 3.08 grade-point average.

Berlin improved to 3-2 with the win. “I think we can definitely win two of our last four meets to finish with a better than .500 record this season,” said BHS coach Rick Hanbury. “The boys really impressed me on the track to-

The coach also liked the work turned in by Jon Hauptfeld in the 1,600. The senior came from behind to notch an important thirdplace finish in the event. In other action, the Redcoats’ 4x400 relay team of Brendan McLarty, Mike Pomian, Nick Seguljic and Sanjiv Patel won broke the fourminute mark and won the event. Berlin’s 4x100 and 4x800 teams also prevailed. The Redcoats’ Will Cavedon, Connor Hilbie, James Dwyer, Matt Kall, Hauptfeld and Patel all clocked personal bests on the track that afternoon. Powering Berlin in the field was Carter Scarrozzo, who collected second-place finishes in both shot put and triple jump, and a third high jump and long jump. His
