during his political career including the building of town hall which he said some locals called “Powers’ pagoda.” Now the entire town complex will bear Powers’ name.

Every barn counts This beautiful old barn is located on Hart Street. The Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation is looking for local volunteers to complete a survey of historic barns and outbuildings in Berlin. This is part of a state-wide survey aimed at documenting an important part of Connecticut’s agricultural and architectural history. Once a prominent feature of the Connecticut landscape, barns are disappearing as farms give up their operations and make way for new development. This past winter several state barns collapsed due to heavy snowfall, including at least two barns in Berlin. The survey will assess the historic significance of local barns and make grants available to help barn-owners with historic preservation projects.Volunteers are asked to fill out a short survey and submit photographs to the Connecticut barn website, www.connecticutbarns.org. For more information, contact Amy Prescher at (860) 829-6464.

Drug ‘take-back’ yields 120 pounds The Berlin Police Department held a successful drug “take-back” day April 30 with 120 pounds of unwanted or unneeded drugs turned in during the event. That is a 38 percent increase over the September 2010 take-back which yielded 86 pounds of presecription discards. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. The initiative provided an opportunity for the public to surrender pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for destruction. The DEA reports expired, unused, or unwanted controlled substances in our homes are a potential source of supply for the increasing abuse of pharmaceutical drugs in the United States and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety.

We’re restoring fertility with robotics The Hospital of Central Connecticut is helping women regain their fertility with advanced robotic surgery. Our experienced surgeons use robotics to treat endometriosis, remove uterine fibroids, and even reverse tubal ligations so women have a better chance of becoming pregnant. The robot’s tiny little tools allows surgeons to make the smallest possible incisions, so patients may recover faster and experience less pain and scarring. Powers’ son, Art Powers Jr., recalled his father’s his first day as first selectman. Many of the folks involved in the May 14 town-wide litter clean-up said they are frequent walkers or cyclists who have seen the roadside trash problem up close on a regular basis. Some said the prevalence of discarded trash on public byways is indicative of a bigger concern. Paul Chester, who organized the new Berlin Litter Committee, reported that “We collected 61 bags of trash, 11 tires, one very large tractor tire, one bicycle, various car parts, and other miscellaneous items”. About 25 participants fanned out across town in areas that include: Webster Square Road, Christian Lane, Deming Road, Middletown Road, and Beckley Road. Public works staff came by to pick up the bags and police patrolled to make sure volunteers were safe. Safety vests and other gear, as well as re-

Pat Maloney said she walks regularly around the Reservoir Road area and “I’ve always been interested in picking up litter” which she does often during those walks. She said a day spent on this particular litter project wasn’t that hard. “You just bend over and pick it up.” What is troubling, however, is how many people don’t bother to do that, said Maloney and other volunteers. “People are not trained to

My snoring was intense. Even after a night’s sleep, I felt exhausted. Like I hadn’t slept at all. My doctor recommended a sleep study at Gaylord Sleep Medicine. They discovered I was having dangerous heart arrhythmias as a result of sleep apnea. The next day, my sleep medicine physician told me that I could have died. Thanks to Gaylord Sleep Medicine, I no longer worry about falling asleep. And the treatment they prescribed has given me the energy to pursue my love of local politics. That simple sleep study probably saved my life! Now I’m truly getting a good, healthy night’s sleep.

Big clean-up
To the editor: The “Litter Clean Up Day” was a great success. We got 25 wonderful caring volunteers and covered a tremendous amount of area. The areas that were cleaned up were Webster Square Road, Christian Lane, Deming Road, Middletown Road, and Beckley Road. It was a perfect day for the clean up and everybody felt proud that we put a dent in these excessive dumping areas. We collected 61 bags of trash, 11 tires, one very large tractor tire, one bicycle, various car parts, and other miscellaneous items. We would like to thank the organizations and citizens who helped make this day a
To the editor: We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for all the support that the Berlin community has given us over the past three weeks. They say that life can change in an instant and no truer words have ever been spoken. Although our lives will be changed forever with the passing of Ryan, we have found comfort in the outpouring of love and support from the community we have called home. We have always felt that Berlin was a great town, but this tragedy has made us truly believe that it is a special place. Dan, Theresa and Amanda Lee Berlin

Back in February, we had our kick-off event, and since then the teams have been busy fundraising and organizing for the Relay. As of this moment, we have over 40 teams and more than 600 participants registered. The teams have really bonded over their fight against cancer, as is evident

Everyone has been hard at work to make this Relay weekend the most successful one Berlin has ever seen. The planning committee and team captains have been meeting regularly, and the final pieces of the event are coming together.
At the end of last month we had a benefit night at Chili’s in Cromwell, in which a percentage of the sales came back to our event. Jortners jump for MS cure
Berlin resident Melanie Jortner will jump out of a plane for the fifth consecutive year, all in the name of finding a cure for multiple sclerosis. The Fifth Annual MS Jump is scheduled for Friday, June 3, at FunSkydiving, at the Danielson Airport. Jortner created the skydiving fundraiser for her husband Mike, who has lived with the disease since 1998. Jortner admitted that the idea seemed “far-fetched” when they began planning the first event in 2007. However, it raised $1,360 in its first year and has raised nearly $10,000 for the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter in total. “It’s obviously an event that is a little outside the box,” said Jortner, who lives in Berlin with Mike and their five year old daughter, Mattea. “There aren’t too many skydiving fundraisers out there. We’re proud of our event and we’re doing everything we can to move us closer to a cure for MS.” For more information on the event or to register, visit www.Jump4MS.com, or become a fan on Facebook by searching for “MS Jump Fundraiser.” To learn more about multiple sclerosis and to get involved, visit the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter’s website at www.ctfightsMS.org.

Gerratana leads effort for stem cell program
The Connecticut State Senate has approved legislation that would put the state a step closer to the creation of a statewide umbilical cord blood collection program. The effort was led by Public Health Committee cochair Senator Terry Gerratana (D-New Britain\ Berlin). Approved unanimously by consent, the legislation creates an eight-member Connecticut Umbilical Cord Blood Collection Board, which is charged with establishing a state umbilical cord blood collection program. The program would promote the collection of umbilical cord blood units from genetically diverse donors for public use. “Stem cells from cord blood offer many advantages over other types of donor-derived adult cells in treating certain cancers and conditions,” Gerratana said. “This legislation brings us significantly closer to creating a public cord blood bank, which has the potential to save lives and improve the quality of life for individuals and families around the state of Connecticut.” Umbilical cord blood contains stem cells that may be used to treat blood cancers, like
leukemia, myeloma and lymphoma, and inherited immunodeficiencies and blood disease, including sickle cell anemia, thalassemias, hemoglobinopathies, aplastic anemia and marrow failure disorders. Despite its potential benefits in certain treatments, cord blood is often discarded as medical waste. Board members would be appointed by the governor and legislative leaders and include the Department of Public Health commissioner. The board must establish the program and administer it beginning on July 1, 2012. The legislation — Senate Bill 152, An Act Concerning the Establishment of the Connecticut Umbilical Cord Blood Collection Board — now moves to the state House of Representatives for consideration. It was previously approved unanimously in the General Assembly’s Public Health and Government Administration & Elections Committees. The 2011 regular legislative session adjourns on June 8.
What is it? A “high five” to Dennis Schweitzer for sending in the earliest and most complete answer to last week’s “What is it?” photo. Dennis wrote: “The photo in this week’s Citizen is of a postal marker located on the corner of Middletown Road and Worthington Ridge. It dates from around 1770 and it was part of the postal route system devised by Benjamin Franklin. The “H” denotes Hartford and “XI” means 11 miles away. The city and the distance were used in setting rates.” Teresa McCall, who walks past the marker every day, added this to the explanation: “It’s a mile marker signifying that it’s 11 miles to Hartford. It was used for postal riders and stagecoaches in Ben Franklin’s time.” Along with her correct answer, June Norton wrote that the first post office in Berlin was located in the old Town Hall on Worthington Ridge, 1799.
Teams Continued from page 16 now, there is always time to join in on the fun at the Berlin Lions Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 21, beginning at 10 a.m. There is a small entrance fee which includes a Relay For Life T-shirt, and the evening Luminaria ceremony. If you are a cancer survivor, you are welcome to register free of charge. Help raise money to support cancer research as you participate in the 24-hour continuous walking around the fairgrounds. Cancer does not rest, so neither will we. Be sure to stay for the Luminaria ceremony, where we light luminarias to remember those who have lost their
battle to cancer and to honor those still fighting. The most touching moment of the entire weekend is when you see the hundreds of burning candles illuminating the path. This is the reason we Relay: for the people who have touched our lives, made it a little bit brighter, and hopefully lead us towards the path for a cure. For more information about the Relay For Life of Berlin, contact Lynn Kipphut, Community Executive, Development, ACS, at (203) 379-4874 or lynn.kipphut@ cancer.org or www.RelayForLife.org/berlinct. Coats’ Notes
In a battle of the Central Connecticut Conference South Division’s top dogs, Bristol Central defeated Berlin, 8-5, Friday in softball. Bristol Central jumped out to a three-run lead and Berlin never recovered. “We did a great job fighting back, but every time we got close, BC was able to do some things to extend the lead again,” BHS coach Jason Pires said. “They played well, but we did not do the things we need to do on defense, or on the mound, to beat a team like that. Our hitting, however, was very good against a very good pitcher.” “Hopefully we will be better prepared mentally next time,” Pires added. Berlin and Bristol Central are slated to face off again today, May 19. The Lady Redcoats headed into this week with a mark of 10-4. In what is a rare occurrence this spring, last week the Berlin High School baseball team suffered a defeat. The Redcoats fell to Bristol Central, 3-1, Friday and owned a record of 11-3 at press time. Berlin managed just three hits against Bristol Central. The Berlin High School boys tennis team dealt Platt a 7-0 defeat last week. The Redcoats improved to 5-5 with the victory. Winning in singles play was Alex Chyra (6-1, 7-5), Dan Rombola (7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 76 (7-3)), Peter Hogan (6-2, 7-5) and Nick Gurrieri (6-2, 6-3). Rombola, a freshman, battled his opponent for three hours. Prevailing in doubles play were the teams of Adam Salwocki and Mike Voelpel (6-0, 6-0), David Balfore and Kevin Stritch (6-3, 6-2) and Ethan Cope and Jaydip Patel (6-1, 61). Girls golf makes a statement Locals top rival Farmington, twice

By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen In performances that surely caught the attention of girls golf teams throughout Connecticut, Berlin High School topped defending state champion Farmington on back-to-back days last week to improve to 10-0. “I was very proud of the way the girls prepared and conducted themselves during these important matches. We knew that everyone who follows girls high school golf would be interested in these results,” BHS coach Jim Barnes said. “I think the girls handled the pressure very well. We had a few bad holes, but every player kept their composure and posted a solid score.” In match No. 1 of the Berlin-Farmington series, held at Timberlin, the Lady Redcoats put up a 178 to down their guests by a hefty 11 strokes. Farmington’s Jen Whaley was medalist with a 40, but several Berlin golfers weren’t far behind. Alyssa Scheyd carded a 41 for the Lady Redcoats. She was followed by teammates Victoria Fagan (45), Emily Deutsch (45) and Emily Stickel (47). “This should be a real con-

Kevin Jud, pictured, shot a matchbest 37, but the Berlin High School boys golf team lost to Xavier, 164-168, at Timberlin last week. The Redcoats bested Wethersfield (170) and Plainville (206). Prior to that outing, Berlin easily downed Maloney, 157185, at Hunter to take firm control in the race for the Central Connecticut Conference South Division title. Jud was medalist against Maloney, firing a 37. At press time, the Redcoats owned a record of 15-3.

slate in the rematch were Scheyd and Stickel, both with 43s, Deutsch (47) and Caroline D’Attilio (49). Medalist Whaley shot a 1over-par 36. With the teams’ top three players finished that afternoon, Farmington held a four-shot lead. “I was really getting nervous,” Barnes conceded. But as it turned out, the second-year coach need not fret. The next BHS golfer in, Stickel, turned in her best round of the year and beat her opponent by 10 strokes. “I couldn’t be happier for Emily Stickel. She is a wonderful kid and really saved our bacon today,” Barnes said. “Farmington is a well-

Berlin gets two more wins, turns focus to championship meets
The Berlin High School girls track and field team exacted a little revenge last week with a 85-65 victory over Bristol Eastern. Berlin dropped a close one to Bristol Eastern in 2010. “The girls were really going all out to win today, and the performances showed that,” BHS coach Steve Soucy said. “I was really pleased with the entire team’s commitment to winning today. Every single member of the team was intent on getting a victory, and gave their events everything they had.” The Lady Redcoats had many highlights against Bristol Eastern, including in the javelin, where Jacqueline Carlson posted a career-best throw of 98-7. Carlson won the event and qualified for the state meet. Briana Cass turned in season-best performances in long jump and triple jump, and high-jumper Jenna Paradis notched her first career win. Also in the field, Kate Piotrowicz and Nicole Johnson placed one-two in both shot put and discus. Berlin prevailed in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays. In other action, Catherine Voelpel, Madison Tavarozzi and Emily Ditmar clocked their best times in the 200 (26.5, 28.2 and 28.5, respectively) and punched their ticket to the state meet. But Soucy said the “performances of the meet” were turned in by Nikki Sylvain and Chelsea Vujs. Sylvain finished strong in the 3,200 and placed second, which secured the meet victory for the Lady Redcoats. And Vujs, despite clipping a hurdle and having to roll across the finish line, had a career-best time of 49.4 in the
300 hurdles and took second, earning important points for her team. Berlin went on to defeat Platt, 88-62, to improve to 4-2. With the conference and state meets right around the corner, Soucy limited the events for some of his athletes that afternoon. “The remaining girls knew they would have to step in and pick up the slack,” he said. Cass was a double-winner against Platt (triple jump, high jump) and finished third in long jump. Voelpel finished first in the 400 and second in the 200. Other event winners included Dawn Grabowski (pole vault), Sylvain (3,200), Vujs (300 hurdles), and the 4x800 relay team of Sylvain, Vujs, Carly Cohen and Stef Paril-

lo. Cohen had a good day overall. The sophomore chalked up a career-best time of 15:20 in the 3,200. “Carly works really hard and is getting her times down to the goals she set at the beginning of the year,” said Soucy. With the regular season winding down, Berlin now turns its attention to the Central Connecticut Conference South Division meet. “Our times actually started getting a little slower this week, and at this point in the season that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just means we have stressed the legs to the point of fatigue,” Soucy said. “With rest, the girls should come out the other side faster.” — Nick Carroll
Boys track: First win proves hard to come by At press time, the Berlin High School boys track and field team was still searching for its first victory of the season. The Redcoats came up short against Bristol Eastern and Platt last week and fell to 0-5-1 on the year. Despite the losses, Berlin had some successes last week. Nick Strain and Jake Cyr turned in great work in throws. Both athletes are chalking up more than 100 feet in discus, which BHS Coach Rick Hanbury said “puts them in the elite group” in the Central Connecticut Conference South Division. Hanbury also likes the progress he has seen from Zach Giaccone in the 300 hurdles, Connor Hilbie in the 3,200, where he is closing in on the school record he set last season, and pole vaulter Shaun Sullivan, who improved on his personal best in the Platt meet. On the downside, the Redcoats’ top pole vaulter, Jimmy Nolan, has been slowed by an injury. Also, Berlin’s sprinting contingent has been decimated by injury. Heading into this week, the Redcoats had three more regular season opponents on tap. “We are hoping for a win or two before the season is over,” said Hanbury. “At any rate, the boys continue to improve and that has been our inspiration so far this season.” — Nick Carroll
almost a year. It felt great to get the wins last week, but this team also wants a CCC title and a state championship,” Barnes said. “We want to do what Farmington did last year — run the table and win everything.”

Litter Continued from page 11 such as the Campfire Girls, that taught children not to be litterbugs. One litter campaign included plastic litter bags, to hang in vehicles, and that was a common practice in those days. “We trained that generation to be respectful,” Maloney said.
Parks Continued from page 21 p.m. (Hours for Aug. 8 through 12 are noon to 7 p.m.) Family adult swim is Wednesdays, 5 to 6 p.m. through Aug. 3. (Children 13 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult.) Hours are subject to change. Percival Pool will close for the season Friday, Aug. 12. Berlin Dolphin Swim Team - Swim Team practice is scheduled for Monday through Friday from 8 to 8:55 a.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. beginning June 20 at Percival Pool. Swim Team offers two divisions, Junior for ages 12 and under and Senior for ages 13-18 (age as of July 1). Deadline to register is Thursday, June 30. All residents will receive an individual pool pass as part of the program. Participants must be able to swim at least one lap (25 yards) across the pool.
Other volunteers echoed that thought and one said, “Unless it’s on their lawn, they won’t pick it up. I guess you could say we are ‘litter-minded’ – it’s about responsibility and accountability.” Josephine Saraceno said she regularly picks up litter at her workplace and is amazed to see “that people just walk over it.” Chester plans to hold another cleanup day in the fall. Knowledge of competitive strokes is helpful. Lifeguard Training Course - The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course is scheduled at Percival Pool and the Berlin Community Center July 11 to 22 (July 25 and 26, if necessary). For prerequisites, complete schedule and fee, visit the town website at www.town.berlin.ct.us or call (860) 828-7009. Swimming lessons are offered at Percival Pool and Demore, Dinda, Bittner Jr. Memorial Pool. The first session begins Monday, June 27. Evening lessons are held at Demore, Dinda, Bittner Jr. Memorial Pool only on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning Monday, June 20. Visit the town website at www.town.berlin.ct.us or the brochure for a complete listing of lessons.
