New recycling system slated to begin this summer By Melissa Chicker The Berlin Citizen
Berlin will welcome a new automated single stream recycling program to town. As part of the service, each residential property, according to the town, will be provided with an easy-to-maneuver, wheeled recycling cart. All residents will be given a free standard 95 gallon blue cart, similar to the green trash carts. Residents who cannot fill a 95 gallon cart are given an optional 65 gallon recycling cart will also be available upon request at no charge. If resident’s want to receive the smaller gallon cart, return the attached form received from the town. If residents wish to have both sizes, they can purchase a second 95 gallon cart for a one-time fee of $75. The carts provide enough capacity to contain recyclable material generated by an average family on a biweekly basis. The new carts will be delivered the week of June 10. Service will begin between the weeks of July 1 and July 8, depending on the towns recycling schedule. The town asks residents to continue to use the smaller blue bins at this time. Residents can dispose of old bins at the town’s Recycling Center, 19 Town Farm Lane. Disposal is optional.

There was a time when Berlin was not the suburban town seen today. It was once filled with sprawling hills, open fields, and acres of farm land. In the early 1900s, Berlin boasted a total of 116 farms, with farmers from all backgrounds and nationalities. For those who never experienced Berlin’s agricultural past it’s hard to look back, but for those who can, they remember like it was yesterday. History filled the room at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library April 26. At least 60 patrons came to hear the stories of Allan and Graham Hall as they remembered when; the history of Ferndale Dairy. Ferndale Dairy operated from 1895 to 1969, and in those years, according to Allan Hall, the family-owned farm operated as the largest of its time. It was a family affair, said Allan Hall who mainly spoke about the dairy farm and how so many were touched by the dairy and

I take pride in saying the dairy gave back to the community as the community gave back to the dairy.” Ferndale began when See Ferndale, page 9

The funds requested by Aresimowicz are for improvements at Sage Park which will include the construction of a new maintenance building, storage facilities for sports equipment and a meeting room for youth sports participants in soccer, football and cheerleading. “This has been a long term

necessary and eventually set the mill rate,” Salina said. “It was defeated by narrow margin. I couldn’t speculate what will be cut, but based on voter turn out, I don’t think we will make any drastic changes.” Salina said he doesn’t expect major changes to the budget before it’s approved. The budget will now go back to the Town Council. For the Republican Presidential Primary results visit www.theberlincitizen.com.
Tickets are available in advance at Berlin Spirits, 118 Main St. (860) 346-4877; at Rogers Marketplace, 45 Chamberlain Hwy. (860) 8284157 or from any Berlin Lions member. All proceeds support Berlin Lions charities. For more information, contact Ron Bosco at (860) 3060244.

Less than 10 percent of registered voters voted on April 24 against the proposed budget of $73.5 million requested by the Town Council. The final vote was 457 opposed and 429 in favor of the proposed increase. According to the Registar of Voters, only 6.7 percent of the town’s 13,066 voters went to the polls on April 24 to cast their ballots.
“I think when we have a low turnout it means the people are pleased with what is going on and the product being presented,” Mayor Adam Salina said about the low voter turnout. If passed, the budget would have increased by $3 million to $73.5 million. The town mill rate would’ve increased .71 percent from 24.50 to 25.21. Meaning a $250,000 home would have a tax increase of $124 per year. “The council will make any adjustments they feel

Local racing legends team up on new show By Melissa Chicker The Berlin Citizen
Drivers, start your engines and rev your vehicles because a new show on Nutmeg TV is waiting for everyone to tune in. Berlin resident Larry Mongillo, along with Ed Flemke Jr., and Reggie Ruggiero have come together to form Race Works, a new car show featuring Race Works Inc., a 21 year business located on Willowbrook Road. The half hour show, beginning Friday, May 4, will air for 14 weeks touching on the
basics of what it takes to make a modified race car from start to finish. Mongillo, producer of Race in Action Today, also featured Friday nights on Nutmeg TV, said after airing shows on racing cars, the idea of airing a program on how they are built would be interesting. “Reggie and Ed came to mind because they are local and unique,” said Mongillo, director and host of Race Works. “Not many people in this country build cars for a living.” Flemke and Ruggiero both

racing. “This show enables us to show viewers what is possible in this career,” Flemke said. “My hope is to get people into the sport.” While talking about race cars may be easy, Mongillo said, putting a show together is the difficult part. “Part of editing and producing is using your imagi-
nation to put a show together,” he said. “Nothing is scripted or staged; they just talk about what we know. We weren’t sure what we were doing at first but as the show continued we have learned that a lot will change.” Mongillo said he hopes to one day take the show from local to national. “We have been talking with different producers,” he said. “We want to go above and beyond what we are currently doing.”
Mongillo credits Nutmeg TV for helping the trio get their foot in the door. “They have certainly helped small shows like us,” he said. “Without them we would have a tough time.” Race Works will air Friday nights, starting May 4, at 7:30 p.m. on Nutmeg TV, Channel 5 on Comcast cable, and can also be viewed on ATT UVerse cable, Channel 99 and online at nutmegtv.org. They provided jobs, supported churches and charities, and gave a younger generation an opportunity to learn, work, and build character.” While Ferndale Dairy may no longer exist, the name has continued to stay alive in town. Ferndale Farms on Robbins Road is owned and operated by Graham’s son and Ferndale Blueberry Farm on Southington Road, is owned and operated by Allan and wife Judy. A family business that began almost 75 years ago continues to live on through generations.

Hall’s grandfather, Aaron Wrigglesworth, emigrated from England to America, changing his name to A.W. Hall. He eventually took a job at a farm on the Chamberlain Highway in Kensington and in 1930 bought the farm calling it Ferndale Dairy. Rumor has it the farm was given its name because the dairy was situated on what looked like a dale and the grass was loaded with ferns. But, in 1932, a fire swept through the farm causing A.W. Hall to move the dairy farm to Simsbury, turning the farm in Kensington into a dairy plant. In 1937, a small ice cream parlor was added to the plant, and 10 years later, it had grown into one of the largest ice-cream bars in the state. During the presentation, many former workers of the
ice-cream bar shared memories of what it was like to work there and the relationships made through the years. “It was a wonderful place to work,” said Rick Smilnack, a former ice-cream barworker. “We used to actually have to mix the whip cream by hand and it’s there where my wife and I got to know each other. It was a big family.” But soon technology advanced, and corporate markets began to spring up, causing small dairy farms like Ferndale to take the hit. Making no sense to try and compete with wholesale businesses, Ferndale Diary decided to sell to Guida’s Milk. “When you have to let go you get sour feelings, but you still have the good memories,” Hall said. “You can’t be emotional about it, you were there to fill the need and take advantage of it, and technol-

A total of 1,685 vehicles were directed through the checkpoint during the detail where vehicles were briefly detained and interviewed by officers. Of the 1,685 vehicles passing through the checkpoint 21 motorists were flagged by the contact officers for DUI testing or other investigative interviews. The results are as follows. Two motorists were briefly detained for DUI assessment. There were no arrests for DUI. Three motorists were cited for possession of drugs Three motorists were cited for operating motor vehicles without insurance Fourteen motorists were cited for operating unregistered motor vehicles One motorist was cited for operating without a license One motorist cited for operating a vehicle under suspension Fifteen motor vehicles were towed. This DUI enforcement is funded by a grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Division to support increased DUI detection and enforcement efforts. This enforcement program runs from Thanksgiving 2011 through Labor Day 2012. The grant provides 75 percent reimbursement of the overtime costs related to these efforts. The grant helps to provide funding to staff additional DUI patrols as well as roadside sobriety checkpoints. Roadside sobriety checkpoints have been shown to be the most effective method to detect and apprehend under the influence drivers Submitted by Berlin Police Public Information Office Deputy Chief John Klett

Autism Awareness
Words cannot express how appreciative I am for everything Representative Abercrombie did to make Autism Awareness Day at the Capital on April 4 a wonderful, encouraging event. Parents, providers, administrators, advocates and lawmakers came together to update one another and celebrate improvements to programs and services here in Connecticut. We have a long way to go but Representative
Abercrombie’s honesty about what our state needs to improve on and her determination to get us there is inspiring. We were joined by the Governor Malloy, Lieutenant Governor Wyman, Attorney General Jepson, Comptroller Lembo, DDS Commisioner Terrance Macy, the Calhoun family and many of our legislators. With the new CDC numbers released just days before the event, 1 in 88 / 1-54 boys, it is more evident now than ever before we must all work together to get this epidemic under control, find the cause and provide the needed treatment, services and programs to insurance the best outcomes possible. Councilor not surprised citizens voted against budget increase By Eric Buhrendorf Special to The Citizen As one of the councilors who opposed the budget, I am not surprised that the people of Berlin rejected the “good budget” as referred to Buhrendorf by Councilor Rasmussen. In case it was unclear why I opposed the budget let me make it clear now and present some conviction. Untouchable salaries and pay raises to town employees, additions of full time employees (when current personnel utilization is questionable), and continued wasteful spending through bid waivers and charitable donations of tax dollars are all the very spe-

cific reasons why I could not support this budget. Calling these real issues political rhetoric seeks only to vilify those who oppose the business as usual in government management and spending. If it helps protect the tax payer, I accept the role of villain. I will continue to protect the tax payer’s hard earned dollars by voting NO on charitable donations made by the council at the behest of the tax payer. I will continue to vote NO on needless expansion of the government on the dime of the tax payer. I will continue to participate on the council as if I am a tax payer because I am a tax payer. This budget process was an eye opening experience for me, and also such a dis-
heartening one. When it seemed at first I would be a part of a constructive process to intelligently work a budget, that delusion was quickly zapped as it became clear that the budget was more or less a fixed item handed to us by the town’s management. I approached this budget as I approach my own budgets, both my home and my business. If the net output of something is a loss then it needs to be cut or restructured. This tactic clearly is not welcome as I was told over and over again why personnel, programs, salaries and raises could not be touched. In the end, the people spoke with their vote and I am glad to be a part of that.

Maloney halts BHS win streak at three Citizen photo by Nick Carroll
By Mark Pukalo Special to The Citizen
Berlin had a chance to cap a great week of softball on Monday with a big victory. The Redcoats came up just a few plays short. Unbeaten Maloney took the lead on a two-run, two-out homer by Sarah Coleman in the first inning and held on for a 3-1 victory at Sage Park, taking a stronger hold of first place in the CCC South. “That one hit really was the game, and Maloney’s pitcher was good,” Berlin coach Jason Pires said. “I’m really proud of them though, and I don’t often say that after losses. They played really hard.” Allie Sabith limited Berlin (6-2, 4-2 CCC South) to four hits – two by Mackenzie Freeland – and struck out nine. The Redcoats struck out just 16 times the first seven games. Only two of the strikeouts Monday came after the fourth inning as Berlin put pressure on the Spartans (12-0, 7-0). The Redcoats loaded the bases in the sixth with none out, but scored just once on a Makayla Harris

groundout. “I think we had a good strategy at the plate,” Pires said. “We just struggled with what we wanted to do until the fifth inning. We started to get it going at the end, but it was a little too late.”
The Redcoats will travel to Maloney on May 17. Berlin got the job done last week, including an important victory for its confidence on April 24. The Redcoats allowed four runs in the seventh inning to lose their previous game on April 19 against Bristol Central. Five days later, the Redcoats had a chance to wash that bad memory out of their minds in the best way. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth to Bristol Eastern, Erin McKinnon tied it with an RBI single and Freeland’s two-run double gave Berlin a 4-2 lead. The Redcoats held on for a 4-3 victory. “To come back at the end was a big deal for us, beyond just winning the game,” Pires said. Freeland, who continued her hot
hitting with three hits and an RBI in the 14-4 victory over visiting Platt April 25, has been a pleasant surprise for Berlin. She played as a freshman, but has missed most of the last two seasons due to shoulder surgeries. Pires penciled her in as the starting left fielder before the season and Freeland has stepped up. “Her hitting has been fantastic,” the coach said. “She’s very fast and she uses that speed to her advantage.” Berlin scored nine times in the first inning against Platt, ignited by Paige Owens’ two-run triple. The Redcoats had 15 hits in all. Owens finished with two hits and four RBI, Kaitlyn Guild had two hits and scored three times, Kelly Walsh had a hit and three RBI and Yalebound Brittany Labbadia knocked in two. Katherine Burek and Amanda Patterson each added two hits and an RBI for the Redcoats. “We really broke out early,” Pires said. “We had an inning like that against Plainville earlier this sea-

Stickel ties career-best round; Rombola a bright spot for tennis team By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
In a matchup between two defending CCC divisional champions, Berlin survived Simsbury, 4-3, in girls tennis. Chalking up the Lady Redcoats’ lone win in singles action was Eva Rybka (6-3, 6-2). Berlin swept in doubles play. Prevailing there was the teams of Meg Pitkin and Kelly Josephson (7-6, 5-7, 62), the Zembko sisters, Stephanie and Caroline (7-5, 6-3), and Emma Johnson and Autumn Edelson, who remained undefeated on the year with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win. Prior to that, Berlin fell to South Windsor, 5-2. Coming away with wins for the locals was the doubles teams of Johnson and
Edelson (5-7, 6-3, 6-2) and the Zembkos (6-1, 6-0). The boys tennis team was overwhelmed by state power Glastonbury, 7-0. Dan Rombola was the only Berlin player to pick up more than one game that day. The Redcoats didn’t fare much better in their next outing, falling to Tolland, 61. Rombola earned his team’s lone win: 7-6 (5), 6-1. Rombola went on to chalk up another victory, a 6-4, 6-1 decision, in a 5-2 loss to Simsbury. Peter Hogan (6-4, 2-6, 6-3) accounted for Berlin’s other win that afternoon. The Redcoats dropped to 0-8 on the season with a 7-1 loss to East Catholic. Jack Stafstrom (6-2, 6-2) was a winner for Berlin.
The baseball team arrived at the midway point of the season with a mark of 46. Berlin’s fourth win was a 5-0 decision over Bulkeley. Mitch Williams was the game-winner in that one. He allowed just one hit in six innings of work. The girls golf team stayed undefeated with a 161-208 win over East Catholic at Minnechaug. Berlin was led by freshmen Julia Kemmling and Ashley D’Attilio. Kemmling, the match medalist, shot an even-par 35. D’Attilio carded a 40. “I’m not sure what more to say about Julia Kemmling,” said BHS coach Jim Barnes. “As a freshman, and

Third class enters BHS Hall of Fame By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
Echoing the famous words of Yankee great Lou Gehrig, Dan Roberts stepped to the microphone Sunday afternoon at the Aqua Turf Club and said “Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Roberts, a member of the Berlin High School Class of 1967, and a three-sport athlete for the Redcoats, was one of the local legends honored that afternoon during the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame banquet. Joining Roberts in the
Hall of Fame Class of 2012 are Joseph Simeone (Class of 1936), Lino “Chick” Girone (1936), Paul Kornichuk (1949), Tammi Borkowski (1989), Jennifer Baccaro (1991), Kyle Gallo (1993), Susan Church Zibell (1993) and Jesse Carlson (1999), coaches George Hall and Ken Parciak, and contributor Bob Peckrul. Also, the 1986 BHS wrestling team was honored. Peckrul is a longtime volunteer and die-hard backer of BHS athletics. “I don’t know if I’m worthy of this honor, but there’s nobody who is any more grateful than I,” said Peck-
rul, who summed up his allegiance to the Redcoats with a brief story. Years ago, at a BHS girls basketball game, Peckrul was asked which of the players was his daughter. None of them, he answered. Granddaughter? His response was the same. Peckrul then stated: “They’re all my kids.” Luckily for BHS athletics, Peckrul has no plans to pull back on his support any time soon. “As long as I’m looking down at the grass I expect to be out there,” he said. George Hall got the Hall of Fame nod for both his coaching accomplishments and

his successful tenure as BHS athletics director. Of all the awards and accolades he has amassed, Hall said this latest one “is the most special, because this is where I spent my career.” “Berlin is a great place to work,” he added. “I was very fortunate, I came at a time when things weren’t going really well, and we could go up. A whole bunch of guys and gals worked really hard, and allowed us to go up. Once we got rolling, we could do some things.” Over the years, Hall has been asked what it is that allows BHS to excel in so many sports. His answer has a Zenquality to it. “Because we have reached a point where we expect to win,” said Hall. “Most of the other guys are still hoping to win.” Susan Church Zibell was a three-sport athlete at BHS and continued her soccer and softball career at Trinity College. Despite all that she accomplished athletically, Zibell was surprised to hear she had been selected to the Hall of Fame. “It’s overwhelming,” she said. “Just to be recognized with so many great athletes — some who have gone on to
professional careers — it’s really an honor.” Thinking back on her playing days, Zibell said “It’s a movie reel. There’s no defining moment. It’s the accumulation of wonderful coaches and teammates and experiences.” The Hall of Fame banquet drew a big crowd of 260. Unfortunately, several of the inductees were absent. Baseball player Jesse Carlson, now in the Red Sox feeder system, was on the road, as was professional golfer Kyle Gallo. Tammi Borkowski and Jennifer Baccaro also were unable to attend. Joseph Simeone, Paul Kornichuck and Lino “Chick” Girone were honored posthumously. In one of the day’s most powerful moments, members of the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department, including Chief Mark Lewandowski, accepted Girone’s Hall of Fame plaque on his behalf. Girone, killed in action during World War II, is credited with creating the KVFD back in 1938. “Lino has no living family, but we, the members of Kensington Fire-Rescue, See Hall, next page

Juniors spend ‘fantastic week’ at Timberlin By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

consider him our family, for he is a brother to everyone who has ever dressed in firefighting gear, or dress uniform of our department,” Lewandowski said in his address to the crowd. The chief added: “That is why we urge all of you here today to think of him every
time you see an athlete wearing Berlin High School colors, every time you hear the siren blaring from atop one of our firehouses, and, most importantly, every time you see the American flag waving clear and mighty in the wind of freedom.” Complete BHS Hall of Fame Class of 2012 biographies are posted on The Citizen website.
However, Bayram hopes the kids walked away with some knowledge as well. “Golf is a recreational sport for most, and I really wanted to gear the junior program at Timberlin toward having fun and enjoying the game,” he said. “I want the youngsters at Timberlin to get a full understanding of the game, so we make sure we teach them proper golf etiquette and
why it is a game of integrity. Along with that, we try and key in on the basic fundamentals to the golf swing and play games that are both fun and rewarding for the juniors.” Bayram lauded his predecessors Lindsey Hansen, Chuck Lasher and Jeff Coderre for making junior golf at Timberlin a priority. The current head pro said he will carry that torch.
“I hope to continue assisting in producing fine, young golfers in town and, most importantly, I hope to make the game of golf fun and enjoyable for all.” Check out clinic photos on The Citizen Facebook page. Registration is now open for Timberlin’s summer program for juniors. For more information, visit the Timberlin website, or call (860) 828-3228.

While some of their peers jetted off to sunny destinations or logged extra hours on the couch, 24 local youngsters spent April vacation working on their golf game at a clinic hosted by Timberlin. “It was truly a fantastic week,” said Timberlin Head Professional Marc Bayram, who oversaw the 5- to 14 yearold junior golfers with his assistant Scott Szymanoski, Eric Lunt, Jon Rustek and Jim Green.
One of the highlights of the week for clinic-goers was a program called SNAG (Starting New At Golf), where players work on their swing by hitting tennis balls with oversized, plastic golf clubs. Bayram discovered the learning tool in January while attending the PGA Merchandise Show in Florida. “SNAG Golf is all about making golf fun, while learning the game in a very unique way,” he said. Having fun was certainly the main goal of the clinic.

Berlin Public School students exhibit their art work at the New Britain Museum of American Art recently. The exhibit ran from April 24 to April 29, focusing attention on artist talents of Berlin High School and McGee Middle School, as well as sampling art from the three elementary schools.

Bowen led the way with a 38. Rounding out Berlin’s scoring slate was Pat Bostrom (41), Forauer (42) and Marquis (42). The Redcoats improved to 10-2 (8-0, CCC South). Despite falling hard to Bristol Central, 95-55, the previously undefeated girls track and field team turned in several notable performances that afternoon. Senior Kate Piotrowicz broke her own school record in discus with a throw of 104-5, and went on to win shot put. Berlin’s Liz Orsini won her fourth straight pole vault competition, and teammate Meaghan Trzasko chalked up her fourth win in javelin. Carbonell, Nicole Sylvain and Kristen Madeia prevailed, clocking its fastest time of the year, 4:13.73. Carbonell also ran with the winning 4x800 relay, and bested the 800 field. Voelpel too was part of the winning relays, and chalked up victories in the 200 and 400 as well. Berlin went on to compete well at the Penn Relays in Pennsylvania and at the Irv Black Invitational. At the Penn Relays, the Lady Redcoats’ 4x400 team placed 319th out of 615 teams from around the world. More than 20,000 people attended the event. Berlin was represented by Carbonell, Voelpel, Sylvain, Madeia, Madison Tavarozzi and Emily Dittmar. At the Irv Black Invitational, Piotrowicz broke her school record in hammer throw with a toss of 114-02, which was good enough for second place. She went on to finish eighth in discus. Berlin also received good work from Nicole Johnson
(discus), Madeia (1,600), Voelpel (400) and Carbonell (800). “I think all the girls are in a great place right now, and with a final push in the coming weeks, we could see these already impressive times continue to drop,” said BHS coach Steve Soucy. “They all work incredibly hard during practice and each has their own goals and expectations they are working toward.” The girls lacrosse team had a tough time with Windsor, and fell 15-7. Cassidy Goodwin led Berlin with four goals. Also scoring for the locals was Jenn Straub, Morgan Imossi and Kelly Shea. Nicole Damboise made five saves for the Lady Redcoats, who received solid defensive play from Straub. Berlin went on to drop a 14-7 decision to Southington. Scoring two goals apiece for the locals in that one were Goodwin, Imossi and Bridget White. Straub added the other. Damboise turned away 15 shots.
