There’s more than meets the eye at DUI checkpoint By Karen Brancato Special to The Citizen (The Berlin Police Department is currently running a Citizens Police Academy, a program to give residents insight into police operations. The department has run these several times and the current class is full. Karen Brancato attended one of the early Citizen Police Academy programs. More recently, she went with police to cover a DUI checkpoint. This ride-along as well as the citizens’ police academy are part of police efforts to enhance communication with the community.) It’s Saturday, March 19, around 1800 hours (that’s 6 p.m. to the rest of us). Inside the Berlin Police Department, officers receive instructions before heading to the Worthington

Lifetime of service honored for East Berlin firefighters By Amy Prescher Special to The Citizen
Family and friends of the East Berlin Volunteer Fire Department gathered April 30 to honor a lifetime of service to three local members. Commemorative fire bell plaques were awarded to Dave Jorsey, Bruce Trevethan and Lisa France, the widow of Arthur France, who passed away in April, for having served the East Berlin section of See Firefighters, page 5 Photo by Amy Prescher

There is nothing like cooking with your mother. Nothing as stressful, as agitating, as annoying, or as memorable, as cooking with your mother. My mother and I are Italian. We like to eat, but we also like to cook. I just started to get into it, but my mother and her mother before her have been in the kitchen forever. When a holiday rolls around, we will be in the kitchen for a few days straight making one dish after another. It’s a team effort. When you are in close proximity with someone, you get to see every side of them. The good, the bad, and the ugly comes out rather quickly when pots start bubbling and the milk has run out, eggs had not been boiled all of the way, the flour canister had not been filled… One thing I have learned about my mom is she likes to let

Berlin Lions Charities and Berlin Spirits do a lot to promote their annual wine and beer tasting throughout town. But at this point, past attendees are the event’s best advertisers. “It has gained some notoriety just through word of mouth,” said John Maher, of Berlin Spirits. “A lot of people do know about it, and they get ready for it.” In 2010, an estimated 1,200 to 1,300 people came out to the Berlin fairgrounds for the second annual tasting. This year, attendance is expected to balloon to 1,500 — or more. “It’s quickly becoming one of the largest and most attended events of its kind in the state,” said Berlin Lion Ron Bosco. The third installment of the wildly popular wine and beer tasting will take place Saturday, May 14. Drinks start to pour at 7 p.m. Some 40 vendors offering samples of beer, liquor and wine will be on hand. Hors d’oeuvres and pizza will be available. Also, Locomotion will perform. Maher said the veteran Connecticut band, featuring two lead singers and a full horn section, is
“absolutely” a great fit for the tasting. All funds generated via the wine and beer tasting — which includes a raffle — go to Berlin Lions Charities. “With the challenging state of the economy and the increased demand for charitable givings this event has provided Berlin Lions Charities with additional resources to continue at its historical givings level, while even allowing it to increase its givings over the past two years,” said Bosco. The beneficiaries of Berlin Lions Charities include the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, the Berlin Food Pantry, The American Red Cross, Berlin’s volunteer fire departments, Berlin UpBeat and Berlin’s Relay for Life. Maher said it’s important for Berlin Spirits to give back

der at Sala’s home. PZC will be studying the current threeacre regulations and in doing so will bring forth a moratorium on the regulation — and that moratorium requires a public hearing. Director of Development Services Hellyn Riggins said the town received numerous letters in regards to the three-acre requirement and that was part of the decision to review the matter further. In addition, the town is currently revising its Plan of Conservation and Development and zoning issues are part of that process, as well. “We will be looking at how many acres are needed and for how many animals,” Riggins said. The PZC decision to review the regulations means that, for now, there will be no action taken in the Sala case. Sala describes Benny as a pet and family member that she has raised since he was three-weeks old. She said the media attention her situation has attracted has been intense and at times overwhelming.

Benny the goat was on the Zoning Board of Appeals agenda April 26 as his owner was seeking a variance to allow her to keep the goat at her New Britain Road home. Sheri Sala has a quarter acre of property and zoning regulations require three acres for farm animals. The ZBA did not make a decision on the matter but instead sent the regulations for more study. “It’s not a definite ‘yes’,” Sala said, adding that after five months trying to navigate the requirements, she is tired of the fight. “I’ve considered moving to Middletown. They would welcome me with open arms.” Middletown requires a half-acre and would give her a variance, Sala said. At the meeting, ZBA introduced a letter from Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Bruce Moore that changed the current outlook of Sala’s situation. Benny had been the subject of a cease and desist or-

Locals mourn ‘unbelievably special person’ By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
This week has been a somber one for many in the community as 19-year-old Berlin High School alumnus Ryan Lee was laid to rest. Lee was struck by a taxi in New York City on Easter and died two days later. He was a sophomore at Long Island University, and a scholarship golfer. The news of Lee’s passing reverberated through Berlin. Residents covered the front lawn of the Lee family house with flowers. BHS students
wore their shirt collars “popped” up — Lee’s signature look. The BHS girls golf team placed “R.L.” ribbons on their hats. Girls golf coach Jim Barnes’ team shot a sparkling 171 at Timberlin in its first outing after learning of the tragedy. “Of course we did have some extra help today,” Barnes said, alluding to the invisible touch of Lee. “All week the team’s thoughts and prayers have been for Ryan Lee and his family,” Barnes continued. “It has been extremely diffi-

cult for the girls to accept that Ryan is no longer with us. Most of the players on our team knew Ryan from his years at Berlin High, and knew how much he loved the game of golf ... I know the girls were all thinking about Ryan as they played today. Obviously, Ryan was thinking about us. A score of 171 doesn’t happen every day. The ribbons will be on our hats for the rest of the season.” The BHS boys golf team has ordered hats with “R.L.” emblazoned across the back. Boys golf coach John Line remembers Lee as a fierce competitor who never dwelled on a bad round. “He reminded us that team camaraderie was more important than the results of the competition,” said Line. “By the time we returned home from an away match, thanks to him and others, the results of the match had been forgotten.” Local golf star Brent Paladino played many a round alongside Lee, who he described as “an unbelievably special person.” Lee, Paladino, his brother Cody and several other wellknown young golfers in town were a fixture at Timberlin, and a tight group. “Words

Firefighters Continued from page 1 town for over 50 years. Jorsey, who served as chief from 1985 to 2000, joined the EBFD following a five-year stint in the Navy on a submarine where he received excellent training for his later service as a fireman. Trevethan spent three years in the Air Force where he also learned valuable skills he could apply to rescue operations. Jorsey remembered how he helped introduce a new five-inch hose system during his tenure, and the objections to new Occupational Safety and Health Admnistration rules which required firemen to shave their beards. Some members quit because they would not comply with the new rules. Trevethan has fond memories of weekend parades and the cameraderie of department members who played on softball and bowling teams. He is especially proud of the yearly scholarship awarded to children of volun-

President Ronald Stack spoke about the developments in technology since the late 1950s when each of the firemen joined the department. Chief Keith Morton acknowledged the time commitment required of vol-
unteer firemen and the dedication of the honorees. Several impromptu speakers reminisced about the close-knit community surrounding the EBFD and how thankful they were to grow up in the fire department family. The Ladies Auxiliary presented Trevethan and Jornsey with glass firetruck ornaments and a bouquet of flowers to France. The roots of the East Berlin Volunteer Fire Department run deep through East Berlin families. The grandfather of Trevethan was a charter member of the department in the 1930s and served as chief. Following in his footsteps and those of his father, Trevethan served as president for several terms. Now his daughter, Robyn Cop, is a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and his sonin-law, Richard Cop, is a member of the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department. Two of Jorsey’s children became volunteer firefighters including his daughter, Suzy Jorsey Balay of Durham, who was
the first woman member of the department. She recollected how she and her dad and her brother all raced down the stairs to be the first to the firehouse,
which was only a few hundred feet away from their house. Dave Jorsey, Jr., is now a member of the South Kensington Volunteer Fire Department.

Local team raises $10,000 for Relay “Ava’s Mom,” a team formed for The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Berlin, has raised nearly $10,000 to help fight cancer. Team members and supporters are setting a strong pace, and other teams are also working hard to meet the 2011 net goal of $92,000. “We are very pleased that we have already raised four times what our original team goal was,” said team leader Vin Biscoglio, who founded the team to support his wife Ceil who was diagnosed with breast cancer last December. “But we are still working hard to raise more.” The leading fundraiser on Team Ava’s Mom is Ceil’s mother, Carol Simeone, has raised more than $3,400. This makes her the top campaigner among all of the Relay teams, but she’s not stopping. “Everyone on our team including Carol agrees that there is still more we can all do to meet the event’s overall goal,” Biscoglio said. To date, 40 teams have raised more than $31,000, with just a few weeks left till the May 21-22 event at the Berlin Lions Club fair grounds, according to Lynn Kipphut, community executive, development, American Cancer Society. “We are approximately a third of the way, and all of our teams are working hard to get the rest of the way there. We know the economy is still a chal-
lenge, but we are encouraging everyone in the community to support our teams in whatever way they can,” Kipphut said. The model, Kipphut said, is Team Ava’s mom, whose members continue to push although they have already exceeded their fundraising goal. Relay For Life is a familyoriented, 24-hour walking event where participants enjoy the camaraderie of a team and raise funds to help eliminate cancer, a disease that touches so many lives. It mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones, commit to fight back through healthy lifestyle changes, and raise money for the fight against cancer. Former and current cancer patients, those who have lost a loved one to cancer, families, businesses, civic organizations, and the public are invited to take part. The public is welcome to register at the Berlin Lions Club fair grounds on May 21 starting at 10 a.m. For a small entrance fee, people receive a Relay tee shirt and may stay until 11 p.m., giving them a chance to participate in the evening Luminaria ceremony. Cancer survivors are welcome to register at no charge. For more about Relay For Life of Berlin, contact Kipphut at (203) 379-4874.

Oompa-Loompas, giant squirrels and dancing candy invade McGee Middle School in this weekend’s performances of Willy Wonka Junior. With over 100 students involved from set design to dancing and acting, the production has been four months in the making. A free Senior Citizen/Community performance takes place at 6 p.m. tonight. Remaining shows are scheduled for Friday, May 6, 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 7, 2 and 7 p.m. There is an admission fee. All proceeds benefit the McGee Drama Club. As of press time, the two evening shows were nearly sold out. Director Kate Hansen is impressed by the level of talent and commitment in Berlin. “It’s not just the kids. It’s the parents and the community,” she said. This former music teacher has done
shows at other schools, including four at New Britain High School. This is her first McGee production and Hansen knows the bar is set high. Fortunately, a team of faculty members and outside professionals shares their expertise. They include Assistant Director Katie Griswold, Vocal Director Corinne Terlecky, Instrumental Director Marlene Bradshaw, Set Designer Marianne Metcalfe, Costume Director Gail Dwyer and Choreographer Carolyn Russell. “I couldn’t do all those pieces by myself,” said

tention to details. The checkpoints are a collaborative effort between the local police and Connecticut State Police, however, BPD is in charge. Tonight nine BPD officers and three CSP troopers are working together. Netkovick has brought the B.A.T. Mobile. That acronym stands for breath alcohol testing. When an officer arrests someone for DUI, all testing and paperwork is done in the van, instead of going back to the police station. There’s even a mini-jail cell inside. Videotape machines inside and outside record proceedings for future evidence. A drug-sniffing canine police officer also is on the scene. Lt. Jim Gosselin is the BPD operations division commander and coordinator
The Berlin Police Department has scheduled a DUI sobriety checkpoint on the evening of May 7 on the Berlin Turnpike south of Route 160, Deming Road. The checkpoint is part of the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Division to support increased DUI detection and enforcement efforts. The purpose of the patrols and checkpoints is to reduce accidents and injuries related to DUI drivers and help provide safe travel. Additional DUI patrols are scheduled on Wednesday through Saturday nights throughout the year. The patrols will specifically target DUI operation but will also enforce any other violations observed during the course of this operation. of this checkpoint. He said the checkpoint has been set up at this same spot for about a year, and there is about one DUI arrest per checkpoint. Overall, checkpoints have been conducted for over 10 years, but locations change. This particular intersection has a high volume of crashes, mostly DUIs and distracted drivers.
Over the years, the range of violations police scrutinize has broadened. See DUI, page 11

Why do the police announce checkpoints in the newspaper — doesn’t that defeat the purpose? It’s required by the Supreme Court and it’s a matter of your rights, according to Lt. James Gosselin of the Berlin Police Department. Gosselin said Berlin police have had checkpoint arrests tested in court by parties who wanted those arrests surpressed. But those appeals were turned down because the BPD follows the rules, set by the Supreme Court, to the letter. Charges could be surpressed if an individual was not sufficiently notified that a checkpoint was taking place. Publicizing checkpoints helps make sure arrests will stick. “We must cause no inconvenience and the public must have an out (alternate route available) before they get into a checkpoint,” Gosselin said. Publishing it in the newspaper and posting signs before the area where the checkpoint will take place are two ways police ensure that people have a choice not to go through the checkpoint. The Department of Transportation also supports publicizing the initiative as a way to educate the public on the dangers of driving while impaired. “We want you to know,” Gosselin said. “It’s a public safety concern and an instructional tool.” Furthermore, it’s also likely that an impaired driver will not be paying enough attention to avoid the signs. In May, police plan to run checkpoints on the south end of Chamberlain Highway. That section of road has had as many fatalities as the portion of the Berlin Turnpike that goes through town, Gosselin said. The checkpoint will begin on Rt. 71 near the New Britain line and then move to the Chamberlain. — Olivia L. Lawrence

Crust: 1 Pillsbury ready-to-bake pie crust Roll the bottom layer of dough into a greased pie plate. Spread the filling in, and then add the top layer of crust. Pinch the top and bottom crusts together to make an attractive boarder. With a sharp knife, make a few slits in the top crust. Glaze: 1 egg yolk beaten with 1 tablespoon of water 3 teaspoons sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Brush the top crust with the beaten egg. Sprinkle with the sugar mixture and bake the pie until golden brown at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, for 30-40 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool at room temperature for 1 hour. Refrigerate before slicing.
Citizen distribution boxes The Berlin Citizen has distribution boxes for the weekly newspaper at two locations in town: at Connecticut Tire, 96 Webster Square Road (across from Powerhouse Gym) and on Brook Street, next to the U.S. Post Office in Kensington. This is in addition to the regular mailed home delivery. There is no charge for the newspaper at these boxes. Customers can also continue to pick up newspapers at Roger’s Marketplace and at The Citizen’s office at 979 Farmington Avenue.
Musical Continued from page 7 cluding The Music Man, Cinderella and The Wizard of Oz. Because last year’s show Annie was primarily a female cast, Hansen hoped Wonka would entice more boys to try out. “It worked,” she said. In fact, she saw such an abundance of talent during auditions that she double-cast some roles, including that of Charlie. By far the biggest challenge was creating and maneuvering the set. “Scenes change very quickly,” said Hansen. “It’s never small,” said Metcalfe. The art teacher has assisted with set design since McGee’s first musical 12 years ago. You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown featured only a doghouse and a tree. Building a chocolate factory was a far cry from those humble beginnings. That’s why Metcalfe is grateful for Maggie Gagliardi’s help this

me try things on my own, which is the best way to learn. She also has a habit of telling me the correct way of doing something, after she knows it is too late to fix. The first time we made brownies, right after I poured the batter into the pan she asked “you did remember to butter the pan first, right?” Those were fun to scrape out after they baked. I never forget to grease the pan first now. Do not get me wrong. I love cooking with my mother, and each time we do so is a wonderful bonding experience I would not trade for anything. The process may be equally as irritating as it is pleasurable, but the memories are those that I will fondly look back on for a lifetime. We have carried on many traditions in our kitchen together, as well as begin new ones. My mother taught me how to cook, and as a result I have ruined a few pots and dishes along the way. Each time we misunderstand one anoth-
er’s directions proves to be a learning experience for the both of us. If you can, get in the kitchen and cook with your mother or daughter. Neither of you will ever forget it. And keeping a fire extinguisher handy is not a bad idea either. Here’s a recipe that my mother and I have started baking every Easter. Italian Ricotta Cheese Pie Filling: 1 ¼ lbs cream cheese 1 ½ cups ricotta cheese ¾ cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup mini chocolate chips or golden raisins (optional) Beat the cheeses, sugar, and vanilla together in a large bowl. Fold in the chocolate chips or raisins if desired. Put the mixture aside.

DUI Continued from page 8 Netkovick runs license plate checks from his patrol car. Last time, they borrowed an automatic plate scanner from New Britain police, but this time plate numbers are entered by hand into the onboard computer. Many violations can come up: unregistered vehicles, uninsured motorists, expired plates, suspended licenses. During this particular checkpoint, 1,043 vehicles came through, 23 motorists were detained, and 20 tickets were issued for motor vehicle violations — 10 uninsured and 10 unregistered. No motorists were detained for DUI assessment. None of the drivers who went through the checkpoint seemed annoyed or upset and it didn’t appear that anyone gave officers a hard time. Typically, about one in 100 vehicles are taken off the road during a checkpoint. Visual checks can reveal seatbelt and child car seat violations as well as DUI violations. Gosselin said the num-

ber of unrestrained children is significant. When someone is arrested for DUI/DWI, their license is physically seized and immediately suspended for 24 hours. DUI and DWI can encompass alcohol, drugs or a combination (however, narcotics do not show up with a breath test). Blood, urine or breath tests can be given. A blood test can be refused by the accused. If a breath or urine test is refused, however, the person is charged with violating an administrative law, test refusal, and their license can be suspended for six months. There’s a “three strikes” law: three DUI’s lead to automatic jail time. The number of months a person’s license is suspended is tied to how high his or her blood alcohol count is. A suspension term is at the judge’s discretion but is usually based on the prosecutor’s recommendation. A federal grant through the state Department of Transportation funds these extra DUI patrols and roadside sobriety checkpoints. Checkpoints must take place on a state highway and occur on Thursday, Friday or Sat-
urday nights. The grant also requires a public awareness component — one reason why The Citizen was invited to observe a checkpoint and interview officers. Gosselin explained that the Supreme Court set up the checkpoint guidelines so they are the least intrusive to the public. Detailed records must be kept of how long each person is pulled over, because if a person is detained for too long it can violate their constitutional rights. The constitutional challenges must stand up or all arrests from the checkpoint could be in jeopardy. These details are evident in the DUI Checkpoint Post Action Report which includes date, time, place and weather conditions. It also reports on: exactly where signs for the checkpoint were posted; average delay for motorists; layout of cones, lanes, and areas within the parking lot; recommendations for next checkpoint; negative and positive factors which improved or impeded the operation. There will be one more checkpoint at this location, according to Gosselin. Since

Ryan Thomas Lee, 19, the son of Daniel J. Lee and Theresa (Keenan) Lee of Berlin, passed away April 26, 2011 at Bellevue Hospital, Manhattan, New York, from injuries sustained in an accident in Brooklyn early Monday morning. Ryan graduated from Berlin High School in 2009, and was a sophomore at Long Island University in Brooklyn where he was a member of the men’s golf team. He was a caddie at Waterbury Country Club, a former employee at Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Kensington, and was a personal caddie to his golf “brothers” at any tournament that might help them spark a go for the lead. A member of the CT PGA Junior Golf Association and the US Challenge Cup, he had a season pass since he was 12 years old at his home away from home, Timberlin Golf Course in Kensington where he spent endless summer days and nights from sun up to sun down. It didn’t matter whom he played with, young, old, friend, stranger, men, women, or kids. If you could keep up with him on the course, he enjoyed the conversation and getting to know who you were along the way. The biggest highlight for Ryan was when he carded his best round of his collegiate golf career at The Sienna College Homewood Suites Invitational in Port St. Lucie, Florida, with a 79 in round 1
and a 72 in round 2, tying him for fifth place for the tournament, and contributing to the Long Island University Blackbirds taking home the winning trophy. Ryan was very competitive and his greatest passion was to participate in sports, loving nothing more than to win. Besides basketball and golf, he loved watching Premier League Soccer and was a huge Arsenal fan. He had a keen memory for sport statistics and a fashion sense of style all his own. He loved playing cards and “serious” miniature golf on Friday nights. One of his biggest achievements was the Stan Trojanowski Tournament champion in 2008 and 2009. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Amanda P. Lee; his paternal grandmother, Pat Dalkowski Cain; four aunts and three uncles, David and Anne Lee of Willington, Kathleen Ann Keenan of Monroe, Carol and Edward Nixon of East Hampton and Christine and Wilbur O’Dell of Bristol; a great-uncle, Steve Dalkowski of New Britain; a cousin, Nicholas D. Lee of Southington; many great-aunts and second and third cousins in Rhode Island; his adoptive Maiorca family, and many “brothers”, too many to list who will carry on the spirit of laughter and camaraderie that Ryan was known for. He was predeceased by maternal grandparents Thomas Edward Keenan and Mary Joan Hopkins Keenan, and an Aunt, Ann Marie Keenan. Ryan will be deeply missed by so many whose lives he touched. A memorial service was held May 4, 2011 at St. Paul Church, Kensington. Burial

Accountability
To the editor: We would like to announce the formation of the Berlin Connecticut Property Owners Association (BCPOA) and request other property owners of Berlin to join our organization. There are no fees or dues for becoming a member. The purpose of BCPOA is to monitor the spending of our tax dollars by the Town of Berlin and to make the residents of Berlin aware of how their tax dollars are being spent by the town. The BCPOA believes that by organizing together into a
large group, the property owners of Berlin will have a loud enough voice to be heard by their town officials. Here’s an opportunity for the property owners of Berlin, Connecticut to hold their town officials accountable. Berlin property owners and others can join up by going to the website at http://www.connecticutpolitics.wordpress.com and providing their contact information in the “comments” box. Or they simply can call (860) 828-3269. Isn’t it time the citizens of Berlin became involved and organized with their neighbors to ensure a true democratic process at the local level? Only by organizing together can the citizens of Berlin effect positive change in their government. William Brighenti Berlin

Park, Town Hall; town pools and Timberlin Golf Course. “There was a lot of federal money in those days,” Powers said adding that Sage Park was built entirely through federal grants and the land was donated by owner Henry Sage, on the condition the complex bear his name. “There was a lot of work done and the emphasis was on bipartisan support…if you do the right thing you’re going to get support.” Powers is still in the insurance business and goes to work every day. “I like to stay active; I’d be bored if I didn’t.” Powers has had an interesting life, one that would make a good book, he said. He and his twin brother, Joey, were adopted as infants by a single woman, a professor at the University of Iowa – highly unusual in those days. Joey was killed when he was three when he was struck by a car during a Christmas shopping trip. Powers adoptive mother eventually married and moved to Connecticut. Powers has lived in Berlin since he was six. “The town grows and you grow with it and your knowledge grows with it,” Powers said.

Fresh Air kids at play with a host family.
Host a Fresh Air child and double your summer fun By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen
This is a story about something that isn’t happening in Berlin. No families here participate in the Fresh Air Fund, a program that brings hundreds of New York City kids to Connecticut towns each year for a chance to enjoy life in a small town. “Registration is still open so hopefully more families, particularly in the Berlin area, will register,” said Hannah Beck, Fresh Air representative. “Residents in the Berlin and Kensington area can help light up the face of a Fresh Air child this summer by hosting.” Beck said there are 15 families in the greater Hartford “Friendly Town” area with host families in West Hartford, Middletown, Glastonbury, and Burlington, to name a few. “The Fresh Air children just want a chance to experience the simple pleasures that I think most of us take for granted. What we find interesting locally, is really what the children will find interesting.” Close to 5,000 New York City children visit volunteer host families every summer through The Fund’s Friendly Town program in communities from Virginia to Maine and into Canada. “Hosting a child does not take much – just a little room
in your heart and your home – but the experience creates friendships and memories that will last a lifetime,” according to the organization. The Fresh Air fund is an independent, not-for-profit agency that has provided free sumer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children, from low-income communities, for over 130 years. In 1877, The Fresh Air Fund, was created with one simple mission — to allow children living in disadvantaged communities to get away from hot, noisy city streets and enjoy free summer experiences in the country. Reverend Willard Parsons, a minister of a rural parish in Sherman, PA. asked members of his congregation to provide country vacations as volunteer host families for New York City’s neediest children. This was the beginning of The Fresh Air Fund. By 1881, the work of the fund was expanding so rapidly that Parsons asked for and secured support from The New York Herald Tribune. By 1888, The fund was incorporated as The Tribune Fresh Air Fund Aid Society. Today, Fresh Air continues to benefit from the support of the media with assistance from The New York Times. Oompa-Loompas, for example, could assist with sewing on their big colorful buttons. It was teacher’s aide Rosemary Walczewski, however, who tackled the trickier task of making squirrel tails. A backpack system proved the best solution. The tail is held on by straps over the actors’ shoulders. The expanding body of one Violet Beauregarde was Dwyer’s priority. First, a prototype was made and adjusted. How she created a dress with a waistline that “grows” 90 inches is a secret until show time. “This would not be a success, it couldn’t even be done, unless I had parents who volunteer,” said Dwyer. From
sewing costumes to baking intermission goodies, selling tickets and ads to chaperoning the dressing rooms, parents help in whatever way they can. The production itself is a student-led effort. “This is real learning,” said Metcalfe. “Kids at this age take risks no other kids will take,” said Hansen. “They like being on stage. They’re not afraid of it yet. They came up with ideas

The organization explains that the fund helps New York City children, growing up in low-income neighborhoods, experience simple summer pleasures in rural and suburban communities. By welcoming visitors into their homes during the summer, host families give Fresh Air children an opportunity to escape the sometimes dangerous, hot and crowded city streets. First-time Fresh Air children are between the ages of six and 12. Many families find their hosting experiences so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with the same host families, year after year. Beck said, “I think people feel there are limitations to hosting children.” For instance, people worry about financial requirements and martial status. “That is not the case,” she said. Host families come in all shapes and sizes: single parents, no children in the home, same sex parents, five-children household, families living on farms. “A child taking a walk in the grass barefoot, gazing at the stars, being outdoors and enjoying a slower pace — that’s what it’s all about,” said a host parent. For more information on hosting a Fresh Air child, contact Karin Perkins at (860) 645-6319 or The Fresh Air Fund at (800) 367-0003. Or visit www.freshair.org. Applications are accepted through June and the program runs through August. (Disclosure: Olivia Lawrence and her husband hosted a Fresh Air child for several years.)
hind the scenes. Some transformed boxes into televisions for Mike Teavee’s scene. Others created candy bars out of more boxes and paint. There’s also lighting and video effects, not to mention the costumes. Those fall under Dwyer’s jurisdiction. The family and consumer science teacher is excited to see cast members use their classroom sewing skills. Some of last year’s orphans from Annie made their own jumpers; others bought them at thrift stores. They all enjoyed giving them a wellworn effect by rolling down the hill on the side of the school and tearing the hems. This year the costumes were more involved, but
I didn’t even think of.” “It’s not about one person,” said Metcalfe. “The kids rise to the challenge and gel as a group.” In the words of Willy Wonka himself, “Onwards and upwards, backwards and forwards!”

Coats’ Notes
Berlin High School girls golf coach Jim Barnes has some bad news for upcoming opponents. “The scary thing is, I think we will only get better,” Barnes said after his team shot a stunning 171 at Timberlin last week to easily top East Catholic (234). Match medalist Victoria Fagan had a birdie on both her first and final hole that afternoon and finished with a 39 for the Lady Redcoats. Rounding out Berlin’s scoring slate was Alyssa Scheyd (41), Emily Stickel (44) and Emily Deutsch (47). “Today’s score will get a lot of people’s attention,” said Barnes. “I’m so proud of how hard these girls work to improve their games.” The Lady Redcoats went on to defeat Simsbury, 173-238, Monday at Simsbury Farms to improve to 4-0. Berlin was led by match medalist Fagan (39) and Scheyd (41). The duo was followed by Deutsch (46) and
Caroline D’Attilio (47). The good times continue for both the Berlin High School baseball and softball teams. BHS baseball blasted Bulkeley, 142, Monday to improve to 9-1. That same night, BHS softball topped Bulkeley, 20-2 in five innings to bump its record to 7-2. In a meet that took more than twenty four hours to settle, the Berlin High School and Plainville boys track and field teams battled to a 75-75 tie last week. When the Redcoats pulled away from Alumni Field April 26, they believed their hosts had bested them by a mere two points. But later, after some more number crunching it was determined the teams had in fact battled to a stalemate. Helping power Berlin against Plainville was Jake Cyr, who posted personal bests in shot put and discus, winning both events. “It was

He finished first in triple jump and long jump and was second in pole vault. Connor Hilbie was the Redcoats’ other double-winner. He bested the field in the 3,200 and 1,600. No growing pains for BHS boys lacrosse Redcoats undefeated through seven games By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
When Scott Rossi was hired to teach at McGee Middle School 10 years ago he was surprised to learn that Berlin High School didn’t have a lacrosse program. Rossi is passionate about the sport. He played it in college, coached it. And he set out to bring lacrosse to town. Fast-forward to 2011: Spurred on by Rossi’s determination, Berlin now has a blossoming youth lacrosse program, and varsity girls lacrosse and boys club lacrosse is being played at the high school. “Lacrosse is definitely here to stay in Berlin,” said Rossi, “and I’m extremely proud to have played a part in that success.” Rossi navigated the BHS varsity girls lacrosse team in its first two seasons — 2009 and 2010. This year he took over the boys club lacrosse team for its inaugural campaign. At press time, Rossi’s Red-

tennis, track and field and biking going on in the spring, Rossi was confident BHS had enough athletes to staff a boys lacrosse team. He was right. The Redcoat roster is 38 guys deep. “To be honest, I never real-
ly saw the other spring sports at BHS as competitors for student-athletes,” Rossi said. “I think that is due, in large part, to the success of the youth lacrosse program. I already had a pool of players ready to go at the high
school level when we were ready.” Also, Rossi welcomed in some lacrosse newbies this season, and has been impressed with them. “So many aspects of other sports offered in Berlin are already built into lacrosse. Football, hockey, baseball, and soccer all share similarities,” Rossi pointed out. “That’s why it has been so easy for students to pick it up and have success. There are plenty of great athletes at BHS; the addition of another sport for boys and girls just provides them with more opportunities.” Berlin boys lacrosse competes against junior varsity and club teams, and a couple varsity squads. But if it was up to the Redcoats, they’d face only varsity teams. “The guys really want to know how they measure up against their projected competition,” said Rossi. If all goes according to plan, BHS boys lacrosse will field a varsity team in 2012.

Money has been allocated in next year’s school budget for both a junior varsity and varsity team. “Like the parents and players, I’m holding my breath and crossing my fingers that it remains right where it is” in the budget, said Rossi. “It would be such a thrill and motivating tool for the kids in the high school and youth programs to know that they could finally represent their community and school in the state tournament. For me, it would be the end of one dream and the beginning of another.”
