Report: impact of train service coming to town

By Daniel Jackson The Berlin Citizen

The Federal Train Administration expects improved train service in Berlin to economically revitalize the downtown and alleviate some the state’s future transportation needs. Except for increased noise in the area of Four Rod Road, the FTA expects few adverse environmental impacts in Berlin, according to a report released last month. “Increased human activity (such as pedestrian circulation) associated with a rail station can create a positive economic climate within which businesses want to locate,” Photo by Daniel Jackson

The Berlin Police Department has obtained a grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Division to support increased DUI detection and enforcement efforts. The grant helps to provide funding to staff additional DUI patrols as well as roadside sobriety checkpoints. Roadside sobriety checkpoints have been shown to be the most effective method to detect and apprehend under the influence drivers. As part of this program a DUI sobriety checkpoint is scheduled for Friday, June 8, on the Berlin Turnpike.

Dennis Kern, lawyer for St. Paul, said the church, town and developer can now focus on the real issue at hand: is the KGS building salvageable after years of neglect? If it is, he hopes to see the three parties work together to save the building.

1247617

At a special meeting May 29, the Planning and Zoning Commission denied Metro Realty the ability to renovate the Kensington Grammar School by a 6 - 2 vote. “There are no winners here tonight,” said Bruce Moore, chairman of PZC, after the meeting. Residents of the neighborhood as well as members of St. Paul Church spent weeks fighting the developer’s application to build six additional structures on the property. The church presented a petition of 1,300 signatures opposing the development, and PZC listened to nine hours of public hearing from the residents who were, on the majority, against the project. But Moore said all the resistance could come to nothing as Connecticut has a law on its books, statute 8-30, which allow developers seeking to build affordable housing to appeal the decisions of local PZC boards directly in Connecticut court. This law places the burden on the commission to prove why its decision to deny affordable housing was justified. It’s very hard for the town PZC to prove, said Moore. “For all intents and purposes,” said Moore, “all our zoning regs mean zero.” He worried about what the next developer might decide to do with the KGS property. A new developer could force a much denser development into the spot because of the Connecticut statue, he said.

Metro Realty waived its rights to appeal under the 830 statute. Richard Pentore, lawyer for Metro Realty, said, “It’s the great unknown now.” He does not know if his client has another plan for the KGS property.

His immediate plans, include a holiday store carrying seasonal plants and garden/home accents and décor. In the future, he’d like to promote and sell garden-

ing tools made by local manufacturers, such as Florian from Southington, and supply plants, trees and shrubs to local landscapers. Ellison is the son of Margaret and Alan Ellison, members of a Berlin family who lived in the town since the 1800s. “Margaret and I raised our family in town,” said

Alan Ellison, co-owner with his wife. “Her parents, Bob and Emily Graham, operated the Ferndale Dairy Store on Chamberlain Highway for many years. Margaret’s uncle, John Graham, had a flower shop on Alling Street back in the 50s.”

And while some local gardeners have pulled tools from the shed, started to watch the weather and shopped for roses and tomato plants, one Berlin family started its own garden supply store on the Chamberlin Highway. “I used to deliver here,” said Kristopher Ellison about the former Johnson’s Garden Center. “It’s always been a staple, so it was sad to

see it sit empty.” Johnson’s Garden Center at its 398 Chamberlin Highway location went through several owners and name variations over the years before the Ellisons’ bought the place, renamed it Kensington Garden Center and opened for business May 6 Because Ellison worked with several Connecticut nurseries in the past, he has connections to area experts that allow him to offer flowers not found at big name chain stores. These include orchids from Berlin resident

Berlin graduate makes henna art a career path By Ankaksha Singh Special to The Citizen

Henna is a dye obtained from a tropical plant which when applied to the skin or hair stains it a reddish brown. It has been used by humans as a cosmetic to dye the hair for centuries. It’s also the medium in which Heather Nulton practices art. Each year, Nulton, a Berlin High School graduate, and her family organizes a three day long event dedicated to Henna. The sixth annual Henna Gathering was held at Hotel Providence in Providence, R.I., last March. The Henna Gathering draws not only henna artists but belly dancers, Bollywood dancers, and other multi-cultural tal-

ented from all over the country. For Nulton, what initially sparked the inspiration to organize the Henna Gathering was the support from her fellow henna artist was the most important thing. “We mostly we all live quite far apart from each other and thus primarily communicate over the internet,” she said. “When one of my henna friends moved from Ohio to Massachusetts, and the opportunity to meet up in person arose, we took full advantage and started a meet up of our own. The first Henna Gathering was just that friend, four others, and I in my living room. Each year since then it has grown a little bit.” Nulton, who grew up in

Through them, I learned the joy of following my passion rather than just doing what I was supposed to do.” Nulton continued henna on the side throughout college receiving her PhD in linguistics. cerned about the environment. Commutes to work are usually shorter, doable, for the limited-rage of an electric car, before it needs recharging. While modern electric cars can travel hundreds of miles on one charge, Kasznay’s “homebrew” car can only go 40 miles. “That’s all I need on a day to day basis,” said Kasznay. He commutes from Middletown to CL&P in Berlin, where he works. There, he plugs into the charging stations the company provided for electric cars. Three years ago, a friend tried to renovate the old Pinto but found that the engine wasn’t worth fixing. Kasznay took out the engine and the notorious gas tank and replaced it with batteries. A look under the hood of his car shows 12, 12-volt batteries wired together and strapped in with zip-ties. His motor, peaking out under rows of batteries, is smaller than the average gaspowered behemoth: it’s

slightly larger than a large watermelon. Kasznay bought his batteries in Berlin, at RAE Storage Battery on Demming Road. The lead-acid batteries he installed are inexpensive as batteries go. He could have gone with lithium batteries, the kind commercial electric cars use, and made a more powerful electric car. Lithium batteries would have lightened his car by a third and given him five times the range and battery life. Kasznay built the car because he is interested in “energy efficient technologies” like solar and geothermal power. He travels to work on 50 cents a trip. His other car, a hybrid, costs him $4 in energy to get to work. “It was a neat, nifty challenge,” he said. As an electrical engineer, he understood the electrical side of the car, but needed to learn about the mechanical. Kasznay can tell how to get the most mileage per charge. Unlike gas run cars, he can see the energy output fluctuate. The faster he travels, the faster the batteries drain. And while the car can reach speeds of 70 mph, the slower he goes, the longer the car runs. Because the Pinto is an “experimental car,” Kasznay has to monitor it constantly; checking the levels of water in the lead-acid batteries, cleaning corrosion, and making sure his instruments work correctly. Once, when his charging meter stopped working, he ran out of juice mid-trip. It wasn’t much of a problem, he said, because electrical cars can plug into a normal outlet. All you have to do is “find a friend and ask nicely.”

Thursday, June 7, 2012 — The Berlin Citizen one of four towns that might have a station built with the new line coming in, but Bernick doesn’t know if he can find the money to build additional stations. A vision for improved rail service in the nation began with President Obama in 2009. In response to the downturn in the economy, he wanted to improve the nation’s rail lines with stimulus funds. His goal was to do for passenger rail what Eisenhower did for superhighways. “We also have to build a new foundation for our future growth, Obama said in 2009. “Today, our aging system of highways and byways, air routes and rail lines is hindering that growth. Our highways are clogged with traffic, costing us $80 billion a year in lost productivity and wasted fuel. Our airports are choked with increased loads. We’re at the mercy of fluctuating gas prices all too often; we pump too many greenhouse gasses into the air. Other countries have installed high speed rails with great success, he said. Countries like France connected

small towns, jump-started growth and “remade quiet towns into thriving tourist destinations. “Imagine whisking through towns at speeds over 100 miles an hour, walking only a few steps to public

transportation, and ending up just blocks from your destination, he said. The train running through Berlin is a spur off the busiest rail line in the na-

In addition, the gymnasium was updated along with the installation of two new locker rooms. The school’s library was moved and upgraded at the same time to include wireless Internet connectivity. Each child’s day is alternately filled with vigorous activity and quiet time; traditional academic subjects and the arts, foreign language, and physical education, whole group instruction and activities and individual attention. This rich educational experience prepares our students for continued success in Mooreland Hill’s rigorous and broad academic program in the latter middle school years.

What is your biggest challenge this school year? Sustainability is our greatest challenge. As an independent school, we do not receive federal or state funding. We are tuition dependent to fund all aspects of our academic curricular and cocurricular programs. Since our founding, we have been keenly aware of the need to be accessible for the families we serve in the central Connecticut region and have creatively addressed this need through financial aid, merit scholarships, and sibling discounts.

Thanks for help

To the editor: Hubbard School Carnival Committee would like to extend a very sincere thank you to all the businesses that donated items for our fourth Annual Hubbard School Carnival, held on May 11. The carnival turned out to be a great success and it would not have been possible without the donations from your companies. We also would not have been able to host such a wonderful event without the great Hubbard staff, parents and Upbeat students who

volunteered their time to monitored the games, face painting, bouncers and concessions at the carnival. Our Hubbard students would not have had such a fun experience without your help. And lastly we would like to send out a huge thank you to all the parents and grandparents who attended this event with their children and grandchildren. We hope you enjoyed watching your children and grandchildren’s faces light up with excitement as the played the laser tag game, jumped in the bouncers and the carnival games. We look forward to seeing you there again next year. Thank you very much to everyone for coming together to make this such a big success. I was standing on the side of Chamberlain Highway, in someone’s front yard, waiting. Passing motorists were staring. “Oh no, that’s fine, I’m waiting for the bus,” I said. May 14 through 18 was Connecticut Rides week. The state encouraged people to find alternate means of transportation to their work. In honor of the week, I decided to attempt Connecticut’s mass transportation system because I work some days of the week at the Record Journal office in Meriden. Growing up in Berlin, I never tried to ride the Connecticut bus system until

now. Google says the bus travels along this road and it can take me to the Westfeild mall where I will get another transfer that will take me to the Record Journal. But I’m doubtful. I have never seen a bus stop along this road. I don’t even see signs that this is a bus stop. But Google says it is, so it must be true… right? As I see the bus coming, I wave it down. Good thing too because the driver was going to pass me. He stopped several yards away and I jogged to catch up, pay my $1.30 fare and sit down. It reminds me of the busses in Washington, D.C. Before coming to the Berlin Citizen, I lived in DC where the bus came every 20 minutes, cost $1.50 and I paid with a SmarTrip® card which I scanned in the bus. Mass transportation was simple in DC and owning a car was complicated. DC is a tangle of one way streets, speed cameras and aggressive drivers in black, window-tinted SUVs. Of course, owning a car is easier in Connecticut and many people don’t even

think of taking the bus, but I discovered a different culture—a culture of bus riders. Connecticut’s busses are the same as DC’s, but the system is older. For example, the bus comes once an hour and when I ask for a transfer, I’m given a paper card. It’s easy to see why the bus doesn’t run more often. Only about 10 to 15 people ride the bus in the trip that I take. The AR bus—the name of the bus I’m riding— is an express bus that carries passengers from downtown New Britain to Westfield Mall. Urban hub to urban hub. A rider could conceivably leap-frog from city to city all across the state. While the AR speeds past the farmland along Chamberlain Highway, there are other busses in Berlin. One stops at the train station and goes onto the Berlin Turnpike. The bus drops us off at one of the entrances to the mall. Missing the transfer

would have its perks. I could “miss the bus” and go to work late laden with bags of merchandise. I then notice the mall opens at 10 a.m.—so much for that. While I wait, I look at my transfer ticket. I have 90 minutes to use it. Issued at 8:48, the ticket expires at 10:18. Also on the ticket, CTtransit’s motto is written: “Connecting the community.” I liked taking the bus, and so I used it to travel again and again. People use the AR bus to get to the mall, where they probably work. A man who wears leather boots might use the bus to get to a construction job somewhere in the state. I ride with a woman in Meriden who goes to the mall to walk; afterwards, she talks to the bus driver as we meander through the downtown. The city rides these busses. A man has asked me for money to buy cigarettes. Another man, riding from Hartford to New Britain, started a gambling game in the back of the bus. Young mothers ride with their children. And the bus drivers know many of the riders by name. Bus rides are filled with music blasting out of headphones, cell phones ringing and the hum of the bus. The other day, I was about to cross the Chamberlain Highway to get to my stop when I looked up and the bus was right there. It was early and I wasn’t ready. The driver saw me and was slowing down and stopped. As I put in my fare, I saw she had the transfer ticket waiting there for me. Golf: BHS girls get revenge, boys 16th at states By Mark Pukalo Special to The Citizen

There was no looking ahead and no letdown for the Berlin girls golf team last week. For two straight days, the Redcoats were at their best. Berlin scored their season low nine-hole score (161) to best previously-unbeaten Farmington May 30 by 11 strokes, winning its second straight CCC divisional title. One day later, the Redcoats rolled to a 29-shot victory in the CCC Tournament. Both were played at their home course – Timberlin, in Kensington.

“My biggest fear, after such a big win [against Farmington], was they might come in a little flat,” Berlin coach Jim Barnes said. “But they sure surprised me. They played great.” The Redcoats shot an impressive four-ball total of 326 and placed four on the alltournament team in the CCCs. Julia Kemmling shot 5over par 77 and Victoria Fagan had 79, finishing second and third behind Farmington’s Kelly Whaley (73). Emily Stickel and Emily Deutsch had a pair of 85s for Berlin. Barnes said Kemmling,

who was medalist 13 times as Berlin went 18-1 overall and 6-0 in the division, has composure beyond her years. The freshman shot 1-over 37 last Wednesday as the Redcoats avenged their only loss at Farmington, which did not count in the league standings. “I like the way she thinks herself around the course,” Barnes said. “She’s not prone to making many mistakes. That’s rare for young players. If she does hit a bad shot, she minimizes the damage. She’ll get out of trouble and take her medicine. Mentally, she doesn’t let it bother her. That’s an incredible tal-

ent to have at that age.” Ashley D’Attilio has also contributed plenty in her freshman season for the Redcoats. Fagan, a senior co-captain with Stickel, continued to improve her game. “[Fagan] is so key for us,” Barnes said. “She’s been working on a few swing changes and they’re just now starting to kick in at the

right time.” Berlin went for the second straight state championship, after press time on Tuesday at Orange Hills CC. The Redcoats were the second seed behind Farmington. Boys continue run Berlin has yet to lose a dual match in the CCC

Voelpel shines on track; Rombola advances to quarters By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

The girls track and field team set a pair of school records and finished a solid eighth at the CIAC Class MM state championship meet. Berlin’s Kate Piotrowicz raised her school record in the discus to 105-feet, 5-inches and finished sixth in the event. The senior went on to place seventh in shot put with a season-best throw of 32-feet, 8-inches. Teammate Catherine Voelpel also had a good day at the state meet. The junior was runner-up in the 400 (school record 57.04), finishing behind the second-fastest 400 runner in the country, Hillhouse’s Precious Holmes. “Catherine really came through and ran a great race,” said BHS coach Steve Soucy. Voelpel then finished fourth in the 200 (26.58). Lady Redcoat senior Alex Carbonell placed third in the 800 (2:23.70). In other action that day, Berlin’s 4x400 relay team of Carbonell, Kristen Madeia, Kaylene Sylvain and Voelpel dropped nearly four seconds off its previous season-best and finished second (4:06.70). Lady Redcoat senior Madison Tavarozzi, sidelined since April with a hamstring pull, clocked a solid 13.82 in the 100. “Madison works really hard and has put so much into her four years at Berlin High

in both indoor track and outdoor track, that I was really happy she was able to finish her career on a positive note,” said Soucy. Also representing Berlin in individual events at the Class MM competition was Stefanie Parillo (800), Madeia (1,600), Nicole Sylvain (3,200), Chelsea Vujs (300 hurdles), Taylor Lupini (high jump), Shannon Mahoney (long jump), Briana Cass (triple jump) and Nicole Johnson (discus). Several BHS athletes qualified for the State Open, held Monday. Powering the locals there was Voelpel (fourth, 400), Carbonell (19th, 800), Piotrowicz (15th, discus) and the 4x400 relay (15th). Powered by Connor Hilbie’s fifth place finish in the 3,200, the boys track and field team placed 27th at the CIAC Class MM state meet. Hilbie clocked a time of 9:55.95. The senior went on to place 15th in the 3,200 at the State Open, held Monday. The baseball team’s so-so campaign has come to a close. Berlin knocked off Wilcox Tech, 5-0, in the opening round of the CIAC Class L state tournament, but fell to Sheehan, 6-2, in the second round. The Redcoats ended the year with a mark of 11-11. The softball team bested Bunnell, 2-0, in the opening round of the CIAC Class L state tournament, but fell to Brookfield, 3-2 in See Notes, page 23

CIAC bat requirements means less ping in the spring By John Pettit Special to The Citizen

A new National Federation of State High School Associations baseball rule

means there will be a lot less ping in the spring. The rule, adopted by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Association, requires that all non-wood bats

meet the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) performance standard, which is used by the NCAA. In simple terms, metal BBCOR bats have a smaller

1247036

sweet spot and a reduced trampoline effect. They are similar to wood, only safer and more durable. “You can definitely feel the difference,” said Southington senior slugger Ben Nichols. “You have to get used to them. You really have to hit it dead on to hit a good ball.” “The ball comes off the bat a lot slower,” he reported. “There’s not as much pop, but if you hit the ball good it’s still going to go pretty far.” Formerly, non-wood bats had to meet the Ball Exit Speed Ratio (BESR) standard. The BBCOR standard is much stricter. “The new standard ensures that performances by non-wood bats are more comparable to those of wood bats,” according to the National Federation. “It’s also expected to minimize risk, improve play and increase teaching opportunities.” Berlin baseball coach Leo Veleas, for one, likes the change. “There is a difference with

these bats,” said Veleas. “The ball comes off the bat differently and it doesn’t go as far. But if you hit it well, like with wood bats, it will go. I think it’s good. Let’s make it more like real baseball instead of 12-10 slugfests. I think it’s fine, and I like it.” Cheshire coach Bill Mrowka believes the new bats change the strategy involved in the game. “You will see more smallball as opposed to waiting for the big inning,” he said. “Bunts and hit-and-runs will play a bigger role, as will your infield defense.” Sheehan coach Matt Altieri said: “It’s a change, it really is. You’re basically playing with wood, within a few scientific calibrations. It’s the BBCOR era. I’m going to have to make adjustments as a coach, too.” Altieri said players who suited up for American Legion baseball teams over the summer used wood bats. “For them, it’s not a really big adjustment,” he said. “By

Makayla Harris pitched well for the Lady Redcoats, who lost a two-run lead with two away in the seventh. “Probably the hardest loss of my career,” BHS coach Jason Pires said, “partly because of how special this team was throughout the season.” Berlin ran up a record of 14-7 this spring. For the second straight year, the girls tennis team is champion of the CCC South Division. Berlin solidified the title with a 7-0 victory over Plainville. With the win, the Lady Redcoats capped their division schedule with-

out a loss, and improved to 10-5 overall. Earning wins against Plainville was Eva Rybka, Kelly Byrnes, Shawna Rosol, Charlotte Cichowski, and the doubles teams of Meg Pitkin and Kelly Josephson, Caroline and Stephanie Zembko, and Emma Johnson and Autumn Edelson. The Lady Redcoats went on to lose to Wilton, 7-0, in the qualifying round of the CIAC Class M state tournament.

Kitten season has arrived taking attention away from beautiful adult cats that were once adorable, bouncing little kittens. JD and Bubbs have just reached adulthood at four years old and find themselves homeless. JD’s family was evicted from their apartment while Bubb’s mother was hospitalized. JD is a Maine Coon and is very loyal, independent yet social. Bubbs is very friendly and social. Both are wonderful companions and are looking forward to having a family again. Obituaries Margaret Swiatek

Leonora Giana

Margaret Ann Swiatek 71, of Berlin died May 28, 2012 peacefully at her home. She was the beloved wife of James J. Swiatek for 47 years. She was born in New Britain, third youngest of 10 children of the late Michael and Rose (Masso) Naples. She leaves an exemplary legacy as a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed by all. She graduated from New Britain High School and most recently worked at Aetna’s Middletown offices, in the Physician Credentialing Department for over 25 years. Some of her favorite pastimes were spending time with her grandchildren who meant the world to her, searching for that perfect gift for the kids, driving to the shore for dinner, and getting to the gym to exercise every morning rain or shine. She is survived by her husband James; her son James Swiatek Jr. of Berlin; daughter Sandra Swiatek of Black Rock, and grandchildren Stephanie Swiatek, Melissa Swiatek, Julia Swiatek and Evan Scheffler. Services were held June 1, 2012 from the Berlin Memorial Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Paul Church. Donations in Margaret’s memory should be made to the Joslin Diabetes Center at the Hospital of Central Connecticut.

Leonora (Tinti) Giana, 95, of Kensington, widow of Edward J. Giana, passed away June 1, 2012 at her home. Born in Simsbury, she lived in Kensington most of her life. A graduate of Simsbury High School, Class of 1934, she was a member of St. Paul Church in Kensington and a former member of the Berlin Coffee League at the Berlin Bowling Center. Surviving is a son, Edward D. Giana of Kensington; a daughter, Natalie Giana of Kensington, with whom she lived; two sisters, Margaret Rosa and Josephine Guerrera, both of Wolcott; two grandsons, Michael and Matthew Giana, both of Kensington; three greatgranddaughters, Mikayla, Kelly and Rachel Giana; six nieces and nephews, Brian and Darryl Guerrera, Alan Guerrera and his wife Olga, Mark Rosa and his wife Bel, Regina Rosa and Domenica Johns. Leonora was predeceased by a sister, Anna Weatherbee. Services were held June 5, 2012 at Carlson Funeral Home, New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Paul Church, Kensington. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul Church or VNA Healthcare Hospice, 56 West Main Street, Plainville, CT 06062. Please share a memory or note of sympathy at www.carlsonfuneralhome.com.

Bat

While Wilcox Tech coach Dave Croninis is all for safety, he said the bat rule should be taken a step further. “I think maybe we should just go over to wood completely and end all the nonsense of changing rules every year and having kids go out and buy new bats,” he said. “It’s probably coming in the future. We should just switch over to wood now.” Cronin said his players have grumbled about using the BBCORs, but joked, “Of course, they always complain when they make an out.” Southington’s Nichols said all good hitters will make the necessary adjustments. “You have to hit better pitches,” he said. “You have to build confidence in yourself and have better at-bats.” —Jim Bransfield contributed to this article.

Continued from page 22 the end of the year, this won’t be a big deal. The good hitters will still be good hitters.” Both Platt coach Jim Frederick and Maloney coach Howie Hewitt said they haven’t noticed much of a difference with their hitters using BBCOR bats. “If the bats are more like wood, I think it will be really good for the game,” Hewitt said. As part of the new rule, all non-wood bats must be labeled with a rectangular BBCOR certification mark a minimum of a half-inch on each side and located on the barrel of the bat in any contrasting color. “I hope we don’t have any George Brett pine-tar incidents,” said Altieri, noting that there have also been stories about BBCOR bats being frozen, heated, rolled and otherwise altered to improve pop. “We’ve had to warn our kids not to do that,” he said.
