Democrats meet to set slate of candidates All council incumbents, except Dacey, expected to return By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen
The chairman of the Berlin Democratic Town Committee said there’s been a lot of soul-searching by Town Council incumbents over the past few weeks, but it appears most are ready to roll up their sleeves for another run.
“T here’s been a lot of mixed emotions,” said Fred Jortner, BDTC chairman. Democrats meet tonight, July Jortner 21, at the Italian Club, to formalize their slate of candidates. Any resgistered Democrat is eligible to attend. Steve Morelli, Rachel Rochette, Bill Rasmussen, Adam Salina and Bob Dacey have all been assessing job and family obligations as well as other factors, in re-
gards to how those fit with a commitment to serving the community. But in the end, “They all felt good about the ways things have gone the last several years,” Jortner said. The only incumbent to bow out is Dacey who has served on the council for three terms. Dacey, who will be 81 when he leaves office, said “It was time to move on.” (See story, this page, for more on Dacey’s decision.) “Bob will be sorely missed,” Jortner said, calling Dacey’s contributions over the years “immeasurable.” Dacey has led the coun-
Berloni receives Tony for his work with animal actors BHS grad known for his humane training methods By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen
Bill Berloni has enjoyed a storied career in show biz thanks to his exceptional ways with animals. Now the
Berlin High School graduate — he was class president for all four high school years — is the recipient of the Tony “Honors for Excellence in the Theatre” award. are not eligible in any of the established Tony Award categories. After more than 30 years in theater, the award took Berloni “completely by surprise.” The Tony Awards took place June 12, in New York, at the Beacon Theatre. “I’m proud my industry recognized my work with animals” and along with that the acknowlegdement that the animals are an important part of the presentation and “not just a prop,” he said. Berloni has trained all sorts of animals including rats, birds, pigs, dogs and cats. One of his recent challenges was finding and training a seven pound Chihuahua to open the Broadway version of Legally Blonde. The pup needed to take the stage and begin furiously barking before thousands of people. Berloni is currently the behavior consultant for the Humane Society of New York, a See Berloni, page 24

Dacey declines another run By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen I’ve been doing this on and off for close to 50 years,” said Robert Dacey, Democratic town councilor, recalling his years in private sector management as well as his involvement with local government. When he agreed to run for Town Council in 2005, he said it would be just for one term. That proved to be a rare miscalculation on
Dacey’s part. He has served as an influential member of the council over the past six years, taking on the Dacey job of chairman of the council’s finance committee; the person who oversees the complex and of-

Royal rumors
Saturday, July 16, the Shuttle Meadow neighborhood was abuzz with speculation that members of the British royal family quietly had arrived in Berlin to attend a private wedding at the Shuttle Meadow Country Club. When approached by The Citizen, the family who hosted the wedding for their
daughter said the wedding was a happy event but preferred not to comment further. A source close to the event did confirm the presence of members of the royal family at the wedding. Neighbors said the Princesses of York, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, attended the wedding. The sisters are fifth and sixth in line for the English throne and the daughters of

Craigslist concern investigated A Berlin woman is keeping a close watch for a Craigslist poster who she believes misrepresented his in-
tentions when he posted an ad. Nancye Frank contacted the Berlin Police Department about her suspicions and, according to police, the matter was referred to the detective division where it remains under investigation. The post first appeared about a year ago and then again this spring. Frank flagged the post and it has since been removed “by the

Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew. Word spread along Mooreland Drive, Randeckers Lane and Lincoln Street about the wedding and the distinguished guests. Dennis Morrell, who lives on Randeckers Lane, recalls hearing rental trucks, food delivery trucks and shuttle buses until 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning driving down his road, dismantling the wedding. According to Deputy Chief John Klett, four officers were hired to direct traffic and people to the wedding from 7 to 11 p.m. Another officer was kept from 11 p.m. until the wedding ended. The wedding organizers hired their own private security for the event. The police department could not confirm if any dignitaries attended the wedding. Bus drivers waiting with their vehicles said they’d transported a religious figure with a bodyguard to the site.

ber, who is a college student, answered an ad about a year ago from a Craigslist poster who stated he ran a landscaping company and needed part-time help. Craigslist is a free online classified service, where, for example, the public can post goods and services for sale as
well as connect with social groups. The student answered the ad expressing interest in the job but also noted: “In today’s world, I would like to validate your business before I release any additional information” and asked the poster to call.

Email correspondence, which Frank provided to The Citizen, from the poster, asked questions such as (uncorrected): “sounds good where abouts in berlin are you” and “iam intrested in hearing from you let me know whats up”. These replies didn’t seem professional and raised concerns, Frank said, adding that these came unsolicited as the student did not correspond with the poster after receiving the first reply seeking more specific information. Frank said about the same time, someone posted an ad in Craigslist, stating for people to beware of this poster. Frank said she also called the landscape company, and learned the company previously had experienced similar inappropriate use of its name. “I would hate to find out that this posting was endangering women in Berlin…I

Ezra Welch of East Berlin is getting ready for the upcoming Captain America movie. Welch has created a “shrine” to the Marvel superhero and is putting together a premiere party for the July 22 opening. The comic book story tells the tale of Steve Rogers, a sickly young man, who was treated with an experimental serum used by the miltary to enhance performance. He later became Captain America. “I’ve been waiting over 35 years for this movie,” Welch said, adding that he keeps his childhood alive by collecting comic book characters as a hobby. Among his favorite characters are Batman and Wolverine. Welch has been busy with all the superhero movies opening this summer including: X-Men: First Class and The Green Lantern. He’s been collecting for 30 years, and with the Captain America movie, his collection is growing. “I’m a kid at heart,” Welch said. “It is important to keep my inner child alive.”

Hot dogs, weiners, franks and ‘the nightmare’ By Daniel Jackson Special to The Citizen
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council declares Friday, July 22, as National Hot Dog Day. A casual internet search gives the impression that Berlin lacks notable hot dog stands — however, the reality is our town is filled with places serving up and dishing out Connecticut-style dogs. Although each establishment puts a different spin on the dog, most use a hot dog crafted in Connecticut, made from pork and beef and en-
cased in a Freihofer’s bun. According to hot dog restaurant owners in Berlin, the most popular topping is a meat sauce, or chili, with mustard and onions. In honor of National Hot Dog Day, here are five places to grab a hot dog in town. The Dairy Queen Experience Dairy Queen offers a hot dog taste unique to Berlin. According to Gary Somerset, owner of the Berlin Dairy Queen located in the center of town, at 806 Farmington Ave., the hot dogs he serves are made to Dairy Queen specifications.
The Underground Hot Dog Lair That’s how Mitch Egazarian, son of Ed Egazarian, describes his father’s business: Delicious Dogs. The spot, located at 1400 Berlin Turn-
pike, is invisible to motorists as they drive by. But enter the Ridgeway Plaza and Delicious Dogs sits on the side of the building. Ed Egazarian

TONY’S
Dairy Queen was the only establishment to serve an allbeef hot dog. Its foot-long skinless frankfurter is steamed before being placed in a golden-brown bun and served. Somerset said his hot dog is unique because, “It’s not only the hot dog, it’s the Dairy Queen itself.” Part of the Dairy Queen experience in Berlin is sitting on the patio overlooking the center of town. Somerset says during the weekend, the patio is filled with people. It’s not unusual for a first date to include a stop at DQ for a treat.

Dacey Continued from page 1 ten controversial process of preparing a budget. Now he’s decided to call it a day, although his party invited him to re-up. Berlin Democratic Town Committee Chairman Fred Jortner said, “He’ll be impossible to replace.” “I’m getting up there,” said Dacey, who will be 81 when this term ends in November. He freely acknowledged the difficulty of dealing with hearing loss and said it was time “to pass the baton.” In discussing his time on the council, Dacey was quick
to praise fellow council member Mayor Adam Salina, especially his standing with business leaders in the region. “He’s the finest face of Berlin in the last several years.” Dacey described his time on the council as “tumultuous” in that, during those six years, he worked with three town managers and three finance directors, as various hires did not work out or chose to move on. The current people in those positions, Town Manager Denise McNair and Finance Director Jim Wren, are “great managers” to work with on projects, Dacey said. Retired from Hartford Financial, Dacey spent his ca-

While he may not speak at every audience of citizens which takes place at the opening of the council meeting, Dacey said it’s likely there will be issues he’ll weigh in on from time to time. “I’m an activist.” Dacey said one issue he’d like to see addressed is giving town staff more flexibility when it comes to working on projects. For instance, if expenditure is over $10,000, the item has to come before the council; even if the difference is $1,000 and the expense is part of an already approved goal. The spending ceiling is “archaic” and dates from the 1995 charter, he said.

Police are reporting that property has been recovered from two early morning shed burglaries on Clockshop Drive and Brownstone Road, July 18. The owners of the goods are being sought. At about 4:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to Clockshop Drive after residents called to report a suspicious vehicle. Upon arrival the investigating officers located the vehicle in question, but the occupants abandoned the car and fled prior to the police arrival. A K-9 track was unsuccessful. Several household tools and outdoor equipment was found inside the vehicle. Additional information that was developed placed this same vehicle in
the middle of winter, he said. Knocking on doors during campaign season is another task he’s glad to put behind him. Invariably, that strategy would lead to numerous complaints about streets needing repairs. Dacey said the town has “serious infrastructure” needs, however, over the past several years $8.5 million has been approved for road repair and a plan is underway. “I wish more people would attend (council meetings) to get a view of what the council has to do to keep the town running. We need more participation,” he said, recalling the town meeting form of government. It wasn’t unusual for 200 people to come out for a regular meeting and as many as 400 when a hot topic was on the agenda.

reer in management. That job knowledge transferred well to council tasks he undertook, Dacey said. Problem solving and conflict resolution are some of the skills he brought to the table. Dacey could also be counted on to make long, impassioned, and at times colorful remarks, in regards to issues he felt strongly about — such as funding town projects or lending council support to recommendations from staff. It’s okay to disagree and debate an issue, Dacey said, but “once an issue has been identified, and a solution found, you must move forward.” “We accomplished a lot, but not as much as I would have liked,” Dacey said. The hardest part of the job was coming out to meetings in

or Adam Salina was still weighing the decision to run again, but as the date of the nominating meeting arrived, Salina confirmed that he’ll seek a fifth term. “We’ve got a lot of new projects to get underway,” he said, as well as several in process that “I want to stay close to and see through.” New projects like the police station as well as finishing work at the high and middle schools, are among the top priorities, he said. “We’ve weathered some storms — but we’ve come through,” Salina said of various challenges, such as litigation over the Broadview development, the VIP store, and Pistol Creek purchase. Salina dismissed speculation that he’d considered political opportunities elsewhere, such as with the Malloy administration where he served on the transition team. “I’ve always wanted to live and raise my family in Berlin,” he said. “I’m invested in this community.” Democrats have been the majority party for several of the past election cycles, holding five of the seven council seats. (During one term, former Republican Councilor William Watson served as an independent running with the Democrats.) Jortner said the Democratic team enjoyed a “bounce” after the success of the high school referendum and that the group is energized to take on future projects such as the proposed police station. In addition, “there is always the effort to bring in more economic development,” Jortner said, of another ongoing goal.

recipe for meat sauce. With his business partners, he opened a hot dog stand where the parking lot now sits for Dairy Queen. The stand was called Mad Dogs. Mad Dogs closed, but Lavorgna entered the hot dog business again serving the same style of dogs that he did before. His wife and sister came up with the new name. The Other Place grills its dogs, hand rolling them “’til plump.” They offer two variations of meat sauce: mild and spicy. The Nightmare Contrary to what the name implies, Berlin Pizza, 196 Wilbur Cross Highway, mostly sells hot dogs, say owners Effie and Fotis Tsagdis. Their sign bears witness to that fact as, instead of a pizza, a large hot dog dominates the sign. Berlin Pizza starts by scor-

set up the spot just like the hot dog truck he operated for years. He uses Martin Rosol’s hot dogs made in New Britain. Egazarian steams both the dogs and rolls, in small batches. According to Mitch Egazarian, steam heats up quickly and, if the hot dogs burst, the flavor is lost in the steam. The Delicious Dog chili is mild. “The sauce was created 35 years ago before Connecticut knew what spicy was,” Ed Egazarian said. Egazarian says Delicious Dogs is unique because “this place is hot dogs, hot dogs and hot dogs.” Delicious Dogs is the only restaurant in town that exclusively serves franks. The new kid in town While these other eatery owners have at least 20 years of experience serving up dogs, Main St. Deli opened for business, at 114 Main Street in East Berlin, on June 1. They’ve already found their own take on the hot dog. Al Mortensen, who retired from running Mortensens on the Berlin Turnpike in Newington, owns this new startup. “We got our training at Mortensens,” he said, “but we do it our own way.” Jim-
my Traver, the deli’s cook, splits the hot dogs lengthwise and presses them on the grill. Dogs are cooked to order. Main St. Deli uses nineinch Grote Weigel dogs made in Bloomfield. It’s a sweeter hot dog than the rest of the places in town. Traver says he cooks with cased dogs and the casing makes the dogs better for grilling as it then can handle the searing. Then there is The Other Place… The Other Place, located at 224 Berlin Turnpike, has been around for a year and a half, but owner Mike Lavorgna brings 20 years of hot dog experience to the restaurant. Two decades ago, Lavorgna sat down with five other guys to taste test hot dogs. After oodles of combinations, they decided on a Muckies hot dog, made in Hartford — and a homemade

ing a footlong Martin Rosol hot dog. That improves the flavor of the meat on the grill. The chili has an Italian flavor. “It’s mild,” said Fotis Tsagdis. “It’s not too spicy. It’s not too plain.” The nightmare, Berlin Pizza’s most distinctive hot dog, was developed around 1972. “The nightmare was an accident,” said Steve Ferrara, whose parents owned the restaurant at that time. His brother would make himself a hot dog with everything on it: mustard, chili sauce, onions, peppers, sauerkraut and relish. His mother called it a nightmare. She didn’t like it. But truck drivers hauling along the turnpike back then did, and Ferrara’s mother
put the nightmare on the menu.

Sharing memorial
To the editor: I would like to thank all the people that came to my daughter’s memorial on July 9. It was a great success for “Share Our Strength” which was my daughter’s Memorial Fund. We raised over $7,900 which will feed a lot of children. I thank all the people who mailed in donations (many who didn’t know me or my daughter). It was very heart
warming. I also want to thank the Farmington Fire Department for their generous donation and John Ziegler for his tireless efforts. I especially wish to thank Angela Piccerillo for her moral support and help in coordinating this event. Ray Ziegler Berlin
Excellent event To the editor: The Joseph Manzi Foundation’s 9th annual tournament held at Timberlin Golf Course on Friday, June 10 was a huge success. The tournament committee and the Manzi family would like to thank all the golfers, volunteers, sponsors and dinner guests that participated this year. We would especially like to thank our
title sponsor, Porter’s Funeral Home, who has sponsored our tournament every year. Thank you to the new golf pro who did an excellent job for us and to Avenue Groove for performing. We are very grateful for the support that has been given to our organization over the past nine years. The continued involvement by all the participants and sponsors is spectacular. With your support the Joseph Manzi Foundation will continue to give back to the community for many years to come. We will host the 10th annual tournament next year and we look forward to the event being even bigger and better. Anthony Marzi Joseph Manzi Foundation

Disney deludes girls into looking for a prince By Stephanie Swiatek (Each year a select group of Berlin High School seniors have their “exemplary pieces” of writing presented to the Board of Education. This summer, The Citizen is publishing some of these writings or excerpts from them. This week’s selection is from a speech Stephanie Swiatek wrote for her 11th grade honors English class.) For decades Disney classics such as Cinderella and The Little Mermaid have warmed the hearts of countless young girls throughout the world. These innocent, precious girls pined for gorgeous ball gowns, cascading curls, a beautiful palace, and most important, their very own prince charming. A young lady could watch any Disney classic and witness “love at first sight” within the comfort of her own living room. The movies left girls hoping that someday their prince would come and save them from the dangerous world with a magic kiss. This lovely fantasy quickly becomes a problem when these girls reach their

teenage years. The Disney Corporation is to blame for leading girls to believe that a man can complete them and that love is perfect. Love is great; however, it is almost never perfect. Girls’ high expectations have led to countless disappointments and heartbreaks. The Disney princes are perfect. They do not possess a single flaw. Girls who loved Disney classics most likely grew up to believe that their perfect prince would have a perfect appearance and personality. While every woman on this planet would like to believe men are perfect, they are not. They are people and people aren’t perfect. Disney movies are fairytales. The classic princess stories are great to watch if a girl has had an awful day and just wants to escape reality. However, no girl, no matter what age, should ever look to a Disney movie for dating advice. What do Prince Charming, Prince Eric, and John Smith have in common? All of these “cartoon” men have perfectly volumized hair, glistening smiles, and rich, deep voices. While nothing is wrong with possessing these characteristics, it is not common that a living person will have each and every one. Just as modern celebrities have seemed to set an unrealistic standard of beauty for women, Disney movies have done the same for men. What is considered attractive is truly in the eye of the beholder. In Disney movies, a princess would always fall madly in love with the first hot guy she spotted. If the prince happened to be a jerk, it wasn’t a big deal because he was so charming and attractive. In the real world, a person may be beautiful, but that does not make him a good person. A girl should give a guy a chance be-

Getting to know all about you, Berlin
Over the past few weeks, The Citizen has run a series of poll questions, on its website, geared at gauging just how Berlin residents assess their knowledge of the community. Of course, this is far from a scientific study, it’s really all in fun and we won’t read a lot into it — yet we found it interesting to see the responses. The questions got to the heart of whether one merely lives in a town (such as bedroom communities and similar municipalities without a sense of place) or whether one is part of town. Your answers seem to indicate that for most of you, living in Berlin (Kensington or East Berlin, too) is more than just an address. For instance when asked “How do you react when someone mispronounces the name of the town?” More than 50 percent of respondents said “I correct it.” Seems like it matters to most of you — people ought to say the name of the town right!
(Just 11 percent claimed to cringe upon hearing the corrupted version: BerLIN. That percentage seemed a little low to us.) When asked, “How well do you know your way around Berlin?” nearly 85 percent said they had good knowledge of the town’s highways and byways. Only six percent fessed up to getting lost now and then. When it comes to the question “What grade would you give your knowledge of Berlin’s history, government and community life?” the results also are impressive: 28 percent gave themselves an A-plus for “truly excellent”; and 48 percent ranked their knowledge at at least average, somewhere between a C and a B. Although, 25 percent gave themselves only a borderline grade of D — which the poll described as “I should pay more attention.” The other item we’ve been See Know, page 18
What is it?
From time to time, The Citizen runs a “guess what this is” photo. It’s obvious this is a map of Berlin. But what kind of map, circa when, and where might one find it? We admit, this “what is it” is tricky and a perfect answer could be hard to come by. Give it your best effort and you could earn a “high five” in the next edition of The Citizen. Send answers to news@theberlincitizen.com.

Nick enjoys camping in his spare time. “Anytime I can get outdoors is a good thing.” His favorite holiday is Halloween, because of the fall season, and he claims to carve a mean pumpkin. fore rejecting him. Although Disney may not approve of a princess dating someone lacking a perfect appearance, real girls should not rule it out. When a girl believes she must date a gorgeous prince charming, she may find that she is missing out. Sometimes, a boy a girl thinks is “geeky” may turn out to be the boy that will treat her best. After all, in the “real world” people age; eventually a person cannot rely on their looks for love. If Disney movies concluded with the prince choosing to dump the pretty princess, Disney would not be the multi-billion dollar corporation it is today. The love birds live happily ever after because it is the perfect ending for a two hour long movie. Life is much longer than two hours. Real relationships are also much more complicated than those in fairytales. No event in life causes more pain than heartbreak. It leaves a girl
feeling lonely, depressed, and sick to her stomach. Heartbreak results in a girl wondering what she did wrong and how she could have fixed it. Her dreams of a future with her prince have been shattered. It may take time to realize she deserves better, but eventually she’ll be ready to find someone who appreciates her for who she is. She will find a boy that treats her like a princess and also respects her as an individual. A person will not always live happily ever after with their first love, but that does not mean they will nev-
er live happily ever after. While little girls cannot help but envy the love stories of Disney princesses, Disney should warn them what they’re about to see is not always reality. Women everywhere should protest and pressure Disney to create a disclaimer that reads: “Little girls, you should understand that you will encounter boys that may not act like Prince Charming. However, eventually after your share of heartbreaks, you will find the love of your life and live happily after.”
What’s your story? Does your club, civic organization, charitable cause, youth group, or church have a story it would like to share with our readers? Did your organization host an event, have an adventure, travel, do a good deed, celebrate a milestone? Here’s a chance to turn the spotlight on what’s going on in your corner of Berlin. All you have to do is tell us about your group’s activities, in 500 words or less, and send it along with a photo to news@theberlincitizen.com.

In keeping with this topic, this week, we offer a new “What is it?” photo on page 13. All in all, it seems fair to unscientifically conclude, that people don’t merely hang their hats on Berlin’s bedposts. They want to know their town. — Olivia L. Lawrence

‘Quite an accomplishment’

District darlings
Young Legion club qualifies for tournament By Mark Pukalo Special to The Citizen
Berlin Post 68 turned what looked like an ordinary American Legion baseball season into a memorable one last week. Needing to go at least 7-1 in its final eight games to qualify for the postseason, Berlin put together a stunning seven-game win streak in a seven-day period. “It was quite an accomplishment for this team,” Berlin coach Rob Manzo said. “The guys grew up a lot over the last couple weeks and learned how to win.” Berlin finished 13-11 in Zone 3 after losing a 3-2 decision Sunday to Meriden, which finished second at 1410. Post 68 lost a 3-0 lead and fell 4-3 to Zone 1 champ Bristol later Sunday to finish 0-31 in non-zone games. Among the seven straight victories, four were by a run
and Austin Barnes pitched a no-hitter. Manzo said Zone 3 champion Middletown finished 9-1 in one-run games. “That’s what separates the really good teams,” Manzo said. “You have to be able to win those games to succeed at this level. There are no gimmies here. Every night, it’s a battle.” Berlin had already won three straight before the July 12 game against Cheshire, a team it had beaten three days earlier. Cheshire took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning before Berlin struck. Mike Perno delivered a two-out, RBI double and Jeff Sylvester plated the winning run with a single for a 2-1 win. “I was hoping we wouldn’t have a letdown,” Manzo said. “It’s very tough to beat a team like that twice in a few days. We just didn’t give up.” Sean Sylvester got the victory, throwing 71 pitches.
“He was just throwing everything for a strike,” Manzo said. “Cheshire’s one of the better hitting teams we face and he did a great job.” Cheshire ended up 12-12 in the zone, missing the playoffs. Berlin played an inning and a half the following day against Meriden before the game was suspended due to rain. The game was finished Sunday. That set up a crucial doubleheader against pesky Madison, which took the first game to the ninth tied 11. But luck was on Berlin’s side. Madison’s center fielder and right fielder collided on Jamie Brancato’s liner to the gap, the ball bounded 30 feet away and Kevin Devivo scored the winning run for a 2-1 victory. Connor Bennett was outstanding on the mound for Berlin. Madison had runners
The Berlin Little League 12-year-old All-Stars claimed the District 5 championship Friday night with a 5-3 victory over Farmington. Brendan Ebert (8 strikeouts) was the winning pitcher. Jack Lynch earned the save. Berlin’s runs came on a three-run home run by Vin Biscoglio and a two-run shot by Jake Loiselle. The Berlin All-Stars were slated to begin sectional tournament play this week. at second and third with one out in the seventh and Bennett got the final two batters on pop outs. Berlin followed that with 14 hits in the second game for
an 8-3 victory. Brancato had a huge two-out, two-run single, giving Berlin a 6-2 lead. Colin King and Sean Sylvester also

Ava’s Mom Foundation teams with NASCAR By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
Ava’s Mom Foundation continues to pick up speed. In existence just a handful of months, the local non-profit has generated some $40,000 for cancer research, and the team bearing its name shattered the American Cancer Society-Berlin Relay For Life fund-raising record. As if that wouldn’t make for a memorable enough inaugural year for the foundation, this past weekend the emblem for the Ava’s Mom website was displayed on the No. 36 Golden Corral Chevrolet during a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Vin Biscoglio, who started Ava’s Mom Foundation this year after his wife, Ceil, was diagnosed with breast cancer, was on hand for the race. Ceil stayed behind with the couple’s four children, of
whom Ava is the youngest girl. Biscoglio said the race was “great”, pointing out that he watched some of it from the pit, next to the crew chief. The opportunity for Ava’s Mom Foundation to link up with the No. 36 car came to be because neighbors of the
Biscoglio’s have an in with the owners of the machine. “I mentioned that it would be great to put the logo right on the front of the car,” Biscoglio said. “I got a phone call within a week: ‘Hey, can you send us the logo over?’ … To see that on there is phenomenal.”
Currently, Ceil is undergoing radiation treatments. She completed chemotherapy in the spring. “She got through it with a great, positive attitude,” said Biscoglio, pointing out that his wife’s prognosis is “good.” Biscoglio said the idea behind Ava’s Mom Foundation was simple — “Just trying to take a negative and make it into a positive.” The Biscoglio’s feel it is their duty to give back since Ceil is benefiting from the hard work and selflessness of others. “Her prognosis is so good because of the generations before us that went out and did their part and raised money,” Biscoglio said. “Obviously, breast cancer and cancer research has gotten us to a point where it’s not a death sentence any more. And I’m just looking to do my part and help future generations.” Biscoglio shares his
thoughts and keeps friends, family and other visitors up to date on Ceil’s condition via the Ava’s Mom Foundation blog. “We put out there the whole journey,” he said. Biscoglio wishes he and Ceil had such an online source to turn to when they first learned of her cancer diagnosis. “I remember the day we found out. We didn’t know what the heck was to come of it,” he said. Through the blog, “even people that don’t know us, if they ever, unfortunately, get the diagnosis, there’s something out there that they can read and see: ‘Stay with a positive attitude. It’s not the end,’” Biscoglio said. As for the car carrying the Ava’s Mom Foundation emblem, it finished a so-so 29th in New Hampshire. Undoubtedly, the Biscoglio’s would tell driver Dave Blaney to keep on fighting.

More than 3,500 hit the road for GE/Petit race By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
The General Electric/Petit Foundation Road Race continues to gain speed. The fourth installment of the event, held Sunday, drew more than 3,500 runners and walkers to Plainville, including a sizeable Berlin contingent. James Matthew was the first local across the finish line that morning. The 25year-old completed the 3.1mile course in 17:42 and finished 12th. Paul Kusek, 53, was the next resident in, placing 24th in a time of 18:47. Following the race, Dr. William Petit thanked the crowd for coming out on a “beautiful summer day.” Petit was the lone survivor
of the 2007 Cheshire home invasion in which his wife and their two daughters were killed. All proceeds from the GE/Petit race go to the Petit Family Foundation, which honors the memories of Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela Petit by benefiting causes close to their heart. In his post-race remarks to the crowd, Dr. Petit — who ran the 3.1-mile course — said it was inspiring to see the “community come together to do good things, selflessly, for other people.” “You must be the change you wish to see in the world,” he said, quoting Mahatma Gandhi. Haley Petit would have graduated from Dartmouth College this past spring. To mark the occasion, several of

The starting line at the fourth annual General Electric/Petit Foundation Road Race, held Sunday in Plainville. her classmates from Farmington’s Miss Porter’s School came out to the GE/Petit race, some traveling great distances for the reunion. Haley’s crew coach left a hospital bed to be at the GE/Petit race. Just days before the race, the coach found out he had multiple blood clots in his lung. “He came down here in the 90 degree
heat just to support us,” Dr. Petit pointed out. Others said they too felt compelled to be part of the GE/Petit race, including Tony Romano, of Plainville. Romano’s not a “runner”, but he laces up his sneakers each July. “I just feel it’s something I should do for Dr. Petit, just to help him out, support him,
and show him that we’re here for him and never forget,” Romano said. Farmington’s Jon Krell won the 5K in a time of 15:38. Emily D’Addario, also of Farmington, was the first female across the finish line. She finished 34th overall with a time of 19:04. For complete race results, visit www.plattsys.com.

had big hits to support Will Matuszak’s pitching. “We’re talented enough to do that offensively,” Manzo said. “We just haven’t done it enough this summer. It was good to see us take a little pressure off our pitching and defense.” All Berlin needed was one more victory to reach the playoffs and it wasted no time Friday, riding Barnes’ no-hitter. He struck out five and walked four for a 6-0 victory at East Haddam. “That was his best performance, dating back to last year,” Manzo said.
Brendan Germano had three hits, including a double and triple, to lead the Berlin offense. With the playoff berth secured, Berlin had a chance to earn second place in the zone Sunday. Matuszak’s basesloaded walk and Sylvester’s RBI single gave Berlin the 2-1 lead through six, but Meriden scored one in the seventh and one in the eighth. The two Sunday losses took nothing away from a fantastic run. Berlin started the postseason Tuesday, after press time, against Wethersfield. “We’ve got our work cut out for us,” Manzo said. “But our state tournament started two weeks ago.”

Berloni Continued from page 1
no-kill shelter that supports rescued animals in New York City, and he also is an advisor to petfinder.com, an internet site that helps rescue groups place animals. Berloni may be familiar to locals for his career at Berlin High School. Although he was “a shy kid” and not athletic, he ended up as class president (his nomination began as a joke) serving for four years until he graduated in 1974.
The drama department was his favorite place to be. “I loved theater” and soon he was starring in high school productions such as Harvey and Blithe Spirit as well as variety shows. “I was lucky the school had an arts department.” His success can partly be pinned to “the wonderful educators I had at that time.” Later Berloni would take an apprenticeship at Goodspeed Theater. His second season there, the company put on Annie and gave him $35 to obtain a dog for the show along with a small part in the play in exchange for training the animal. Sandy
became a star and later performed in more than 2,000 performances of the play. Berloni said his methods are founded on the principle that “I create a situation where the (animal) wants to do what I ask” based on positive feedback. More difficult to work with are actors who are scared of animals or have other behaviors towards animals that make Berloni’s work more difficult. He has worked with hundreds of animals and written several books on his experiences, including one title, Sandy, about the scruffy res-
cue that would become a famous mutt. Berloni has also written an autobiography, Broadway Tails. Among the favorite shows he’s worked on is The Wizard of Oz, a Broadway version of the movie which delighted him as a kid. Berloni made a conscious decision not to go to Hollywood, preferring the environment he found working on Broadway — but he never thought receiving a Tony would ever be part of his experience there.
