Welcome back — teachers get ready for a great year

(The Berlin Citizen visited Berlin public schools and St. Paul Catholic School last week to ask teachers how they were preparing for Aug. 31, the first day with students, and how they were feeling about the new school year. Here’s what they told us.)

Jessica DeLaura, Spanish teacher, Berlin High School This is my fifth year at Berlin High. We’re looking at new resources such as text books and integrating technology more. The first day — it’s the unknown, seeing students and getting the classroom ready. This year, I’ll be co-advisor to the class of 2012.

Katie Cormier, special education department head, Berlin High School I’m really excited. This is my eighth year at Berlin high. We’re starting new support services and working with a lot of different students. We’re really going to do some neat things this year. I still don’t sleep the night before — students don’t realize teachers are just as nervous as they are. It’s my favorite day. You get a little anxious, but it’s exciting.

Craig Rogers, tech ed teacher, McGee Middle School It’s a fresh start with fresh paint. Students will be quiet the first week and that’s a good time to lay down expectations. It’s a good start to the year. Paul Griswold, tech ed teacher, McGee Middle School I’m looking forward to seeing what the building looks like after the renovations are done.

Allie Dunn, pre-school director and pre-K teacher, St. Paul Catholic School It’s great seeing new faces, especially with the four year-olds. They’re a little bit tentative but by the end of the day they have this big smile. Diana Oppel, pre-K teacher, St. Paul Catholic School It’s my first year and a new school and a new classroom. I have butterflies of emotion. I look forward to working with the staff and meeting the parents and children.

While the back-toschool countdown is underway for students, parents and schools, this calendar at Willard Elementary School has jumped ahead already.

Betty Stephenson, reading consultant, Willard Elementary school There’s a lot to do in the summer, training in new remedial materials and meeting with new teachers. As for students, we’ll see what shape they’re in at the end of the summer, do an asessment and then off we go! More Back to School Teachers on page 4

stalkers from the church. (The boy said Miller told him he used an alias because the nuns did not approve of Facebook.) Miller told police he had texted inappropriate messages of a sexual nature to the child. He stated he knew the child was 13 and that he never had physical contact with him. He said that he had offered to perform sex acts on the child

view regarding an investigation. Miller agreed and waived his rights prior to the interview. He told police he’d known the boy for about five years and that he and the child conversed on a regular basis on Facebook and also by phone. Miller acknowledged that he used the alias Brenden Duvey on Facebook stating this was to avoid

A July 6 arrest warrant for Michael Miller, former assistant pastor at St. Paul Church, gives a lurid account of communications between the 41 year-old priest and a 13 year-old Berlin boy. The document was unsealed Aug. 16 when Miller appeared in New Britain Superior Court where he pled not guilty to five felony counts of risk of injury to a minor and one misdemeanor count of obscenity. The situation that led to his arrest was uncovered by the child’s mother who noticed that her son was having what she considered inappropriate Facebook conversations with Miller. For example, while chatting on Facebook and watching a televised wrestling match Miller commented that the men had “nice butts.” Other exchanges detailed in the warrant were more explicit. In several of those phone and text communications, sexual acts were discussed by Miller in graphic detail including references

to pornographic movies, descriptions of homosexual encounters and masturbation. An exchange June 16 was described in the warrant as an “extremely sexually graphic” Facebook conversation which detailed sexual acts Miller said he would perform on the boy. Facebook entries and phone records include a time and date stamp of multiple exchanges between Miller and the boy, providing police a timeline of their contacts. The alleged victim’s name, as well as his mother’s, were redacted from the warrant. The mother called some of the Facebook exchanges between Miller and her son “very distrubing and inappropriate.” In separate statements to police, Miller and the boy said that Miller never physically touched the 13-year-old. Based on information, from the boy, that Miller planned to meet a man at a motel on the Berlin Turnpike, police put Miller under surveillance. A detective approached Miller as he left the motel and asked him to come to the station for an inter-

Back to School Teachers Megan Susco, third grade teacher, Hubbard Elementary School I’ve been getting the room together, getting the desks and supplies ready. I was previously a fifth grade teacher and this is my first year with third grade. The first day is fun and exciting and always a little anxious as they move into a new grade and get to know you and our classroom environment. We’ll brainstorm the rules together. They got a letter from me about a project we’ll put together called Summer Memories with their photos or drawings. We’ll think about their hopes and dreams and talk about their goals.

In recent history, the Board of Education has, ultimately, decided every measure unanimously. The last “nay” vote, according to minutes at the Town Clerk’s office, occurred Feb. 14, 2005. In that meeting, the board defeated two budget amendments 6 to 3 and approved the budget 7 to 2. For six years, unanimous votes have included: hiring teachers and superintendents; curriculum approval; student expulsions and budget approvals. Board members have come and gone, but the votes have remained unanimous for the nine member panel. At the time of the split votes, the board included members:

Joseph Annunziata, Gary Brochu, Julie Erickson, Michelle Hartel, Carolyn McElravy, Lew Michaels, Kathleen O’Donnell-Moss, Anthony Recck and John Richards. Four of those nine members continue to serve: Brochu, Erickson, O’Donnell-Moss and Richards. The present board also includes: Michael Baczewski, Kristin Campanelli, Cynthia Kobus and Irene Matulis. Anthony Recck resigned June 28. Over the past six years, other people have been appointed or voted onto the board, as well. These are: Chris Puzio, Diane M. Mancini, Rachel J. Resident questions need for local 9/11 memorial By Chris Bernucca

I’m sorry, but I really don’t understand the significance of a 9/11 memorial in Berlin. Why isn’t there a memorial in town to commemorate Pearl Harbor, another attack on U.S. soil? Or one to commemorate the bombing in Oklahoma City, another ter-

rorist attack? Does the absence of a memorial here in Berlin for those two awful events mean they are so significant that they don’t require a reminder, or so insignificant that they don’t warrant one? And what exactly is Berlin’s connection to any of those events? I’ve only been living here seven years and

What’s your story? Does your club, civic organization, charitable cause, youth group, or church have a story it would like to share with our readers? Did your organization host an event, have an adventure, travel, do a good deed, celebrate a milestone? Here’s a chance to turn the spotlight on what’s going on in your corner of Berlin. All you have to do is tell us about your group’s activities, in 500 words or less, and send it along with a photo to news@theberlincitizen.com. Questions? Call (860)829-5720.

have yet to meet everyone in town, so I guess there could be someone living here that was directly or indirectly connected to and affected by the 9/11 attacks. Like me. And my family. Two friends of mine died in the World Trade Center that day. Neighbors lost sons and daughters. Virtually every member of a local firehouse died. Some of my coworkers were in the train station below the towers and had to run for their lives. I grabbed my children out of school, and we pulled our shirts over our noses and mouths and tried to navigate our way home. Our eyes were tearing and stinging from the dust storm blowing across the East River and covering our Brooklyn neighborhood with ash and debris and death. While F-16s pierced the

sky above, we waited for my wife to somehow march home from mid-town Manhattan into lower Brooklyn, through the despondence and destruction. She finally made it, six hours after the planes hit the towers. And those awful memories absolutely pale in comparison to the thousands of people in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania who have a permanent hole in their families that serves the same purpose as a memorial, wherever it may be built. As far as reminders go,

they are everywhere. Security lines at airports. A patently unfair unilateral distrust of Muslims. A war in Iraq built on a lie that still is being unsuccessfully waged at the cost of thousands more American deaths. Want to build a memorial here in Berlin? Knock yourselves out. Just understand that there’s a few folks here who really don’t need to be reminded of Sept. 11, 2001. I choose to remember May 1, 2011 instead. You remember what happened that day, don’t you?

Berlin Brief School zone traffic The Berlin Police Department reminds residents that with the new school year upon us, motorists are reminded to keep a watchful eye out for children in the roadways. Watch out for school busses and children waiting at bus stops or walking to school. Obey all posted traffic controls and the directions of school crossing guards on Grove Street in East Berlin and Norton Road in Berlin. Speed limits in the areas of all schools will be strictly enforced with the aid of both Radar and Laser. The speed limit in a school zone is 25 MPH and is strictly enforced with a minimum fine of $150. Passing a standing school bus (C.G.S. §14-279) will also be strictly enforced with a $460 infraction for the 1st offense. The department noted that areas of particular interest are: Berlin High School - There are two designated student pick-up and drop-off areas at the high school. One pickup/drop-off area is located inside the student parking lot near the glass doors that lead to the gym. The second

is on the east bound side of Patterson Way directly opposite the teacher’s parking lot, this area is posted with “student drop-off “signs. The remainder of Patterson Way is posted “No Parking” on both sides of the roadway for the safety of the children and motorists traveling on the street. The “No Parking” areas will be strictly enforced for parking violations of C.G.S. § 14-251 and violators will be issued a state infraction in the amount of $92. Note: A parked vehicle is defined in Connecticut law as a motor vehicle in a stationary position within the limits of a public highway. Sitting in a stopped vehicle waiting to pick up a student falls under this definition. Berlin High School students should also be mindful of the various laws that pertain to them. There are several laws that can result in a 30 or 60 day suspension of driving privileges. McGee Middle and Griswold Elementary Schools Parents are advised to utilize the designated pick-up and drop-off points inside the school parking areas.

What to wear — a timeless back-to-school dilemma Feathers, skinny jeans and the layered-look are basics this fall By Katherine Vandrilla Special to The Citizen

Something important happens toward the end of August. It is time once again for nutritious cafeteria lunches, sleepless nights studying, and the dreaded mile run. That’s right! Berlin youth will be heading back to school. For many the truly important question is: what will they be wearing? Everyone has had that dreaded dream of sleeping through their alarm and showing up in class without any pants, but for many teenagers, fashion is a back to school must. Or is it? “I consider my fashion to be pretty important the first week of school; after that it’s [just] thrown on in the morning,” said Amanda Maule, a student at Berlin High School. Fashion is ever-changing. What is “in” today can get a kid laughed at tomorrow. But some styles come back — although often too late to redeem those who were considered fashion pariahs. Bellbottom pants are making a comeback, and many teenagers are recycling their parent’s “retro” pairs from the 70s. That is not the only way today’s kids are being resourceful. For a generation which never seems to leave the house without the words “Hollister” or “Aéropostale” plastered somewhere on their body, they are practicing smart shopping techniques, and are not afraid to save a few dollars on their quest to find trends. Between Marshalls, The Salvation Army, and yes, even WalMart, Berlin teenagers are going to be going back to school in style while having a few extra dollars in their wallets. “I go where I can get the best buy for good clothes,” said Anthony Walentukonis, Berlin High School. Typical teenagers are on a fixed budget when it comes to

Clockwise from upper left: Berlin resident Max Sznaj in a school uniform for class at a private school in West Hartford; choosing an outfit for the first day of school can be a challenge; Berlin resident Toby Sznaj in her school uniform for Trinity College Academy, a Hartford magnet school; a trip to the mall is in order for most students before school; Berlin resident Cheyenne Dickinson gets feather extensions in her hair at Cut Loose Hair Studio. their wardrobe, or still shop with their parents. Either way, they are going to be limited in the quantity of clothes they can buy, and must look for clothes that are interchangeable with several outfits. The popular trend now is to layer. Whether it is summer or freezing out, layering shirts, sweaters, and jackets is the style. The necklines decrease in height, with the outer layer usually tucked in to emphasize those beneath. Skinny jeans are also popular for both men and women,

as they have been for decades. Accessorizing is kept simple. Headbands, pony tails, or buns are dressed up with a simple hair clip such as a flower. A new, more permanent hair style is to get a feather extension. The extensions are rooster feathers that last up to six weeks, and can be attached by almost any hair dresser. Jewelry is worn sparingly, and is something simple used to accent an outfit or meant to showcase something treasured, (such as a class ring or

Chamilia/Pandora bracelet). Believe it or not, you can shop at the mall and still get a good deal. H & M and Forever 21 are reasonably priced, and the clearance racks at J. C. Penny and Macy’s have the latest fashions for a bargain. Wal-Mart may be looked down upon by many people today, but nothing can beat saving $90 on the same pair of pants — minus the label — that you would’ve bought at Abercrombie. The fashion drama can

make you wish you didn’t have to worry about what to wear in the morning. The more expensive trends get, and the quicker they change, the more appealing schools with uniforms begin to look. Between magnet, private, and even some public schools switching to uniforms, many of today’s students don’t have to worry about their wardrobe during the week. For the rest of us, no such luck.

DeLorenzo: Division I experience ‘very humbling’ By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

For a guy who has dominated on the football field since he first put on a helmet, training camp at the University of Connecticut was an eye- DeLorenzo opening experience for Max DeLorenzo. “The whole thing is just very humbling,” the UConn freshman said. “You go from the top guy in high school — possibly the top guy in the state — now you go to a Division I program where you’re starting fresh again. You’ve got a lot of good players ahead of you, and on the defensive side of the ball. It has definitely been humbling.” DeLorenzo, who set a slew of records during his time with the Berlin High School football team, arrived at UConn at the end of June to begin classes and to work out. Training camp kicked off in early August. “It’s 24/7

football — film, practice, practice, film,” said DeLorenzo, a scholarship player. “It’s been a big adjustment. “There’s definitely a difference in the level of speed. But I’m hanging in there. My size helps me a lot.” The 5-11, 209-pound DeLorenzo practiced at run-

ning back for the Huskies. Being tackled hasn’t been a problem, he said, but pass blocking at the Division I level is a whole different animal. “When you step up there and you’ve got a big, 6-4 defensive end, 240 and greater, coming right at you, that’s probably the biggest college

hit I’ve gotten, not so much running the ball and getting tackled. I’m used to that by now.” Another aspect of the college game DeLorenzo adjusted to was the intensity of coaches. “They’re a little different from high school,” he said. “High school coaches do yell, but these guys want

the best, they want perfection every play. That’s what’s going to make us win. “Coach (Paul Pasqualoni) definitely wants to have a tough-minded group. It’s all supposed to work out for us in the end.” He has been pushed to the

BHS football factory running well By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen News that Berlin High School football player Max DeLorenzo would accept a scholarship to the University of Connecticut swept the town last year, and was met with cheers. But as it turned out, that was just the beginning of the good news for the BHS football community. Incredibly, four other members of the BHS Class of 2011 would earn scholarships to play football in college as well —

Ras Morgan (Southern Connecticut State University), Joe Dellaquila (Marist College), Mason Powers (Sacred Heart University) and Tevin Grant (ASA Junior College). Although no other BHS class has produced that many scholarship football players, Berlin football has a proud history of preparing alum to make the leap to the college game. Since 2004 alone, more than 30 Redcoats have gone on to compete at the next level. “I truly believe there is a

place for all kids to continue playing who love the game of football,” BHS coach John Capodice said. However, these days, college football teams are looking for well-rounded, serious young men — not just athletes. “I preach to our players the importance of their grades,” Capodice said. “It is sad to see kids who want to play in college, but do not have the grades. By striving in the classroom, there is a greater chance for college opportunities.”

If players hold up their end of the bargain — in and out of the classroom — Capodice will do his part to tout their skills to recruiters. “We have had a successful football program at Berlin High School, and I have a strong network of college coaches who I can contact for our players, at all levels,” Capodice said. “The college coaches are aware of our program, and are eager to recruit Berlin High School football players.”

The Berlin High School football team held its first workout of the season Monday. The only piece of equipment players are allowed to wear during the first five days of practice — conditioning week — is a helmet. After that, the pads go on and contact begins. The Redcoats are coming off a highly successful 2010 campaign. The locals went undefeated during the regular season, claimed the Central Connecticut Conference Division III title and earned the No. 1 seed in the CIAC Class M state playoffs.

Days after the tragic passing of our son, Ryan Lee, we were approached by two of his friends with an idea of planning a golf tournaLee ment in his honor. As we struggled to deal with our loss, his friends spearheaded an effort to plan and organize the event. What initially seemed like a small gathering of friends and family members turned into the Ryan T. Lee Golf Classic with over 140 participants, more than 45 sponsors, and a tournament dinner attended by more than 220 people. In just four short months, these young men showed a maturity well beyond their years and a level of compassion which takes a lifetime to foster. John McNair and Tim Cote not only had an idea, but the determination to put together an event that their friend Ryan would truly be proud to be associated with. In the planning stages, John and Tim remained resolved to concentrate on all the details that would matter most to Ryan. When it came to rounding up sponsors, they made the phone calls, approached local businesses, and called in favors. As the tournament began to take on a life of its own, they remained focused on their initial goal of including as many friends and family members as possible in this labor of love. Sometimes the best way to keep a person’s spirit alive is to create opportunities to further their legacy. It has been comforting to work with a group of committed individuals whose sole misSee Lee, next page

sion was to honor Ryan’s life. An insightful gesture by two young men served to activate a team of over 30 volunteers, who quickly developed a reputation of going above and beyond the call. Ryan may no longer be with us, but the Ryan T. Lee Golf Classic will always be a symbol of who he was and who he had the potential of becoming. Thank you John and Tim for embracing the challenges which would discourage most people from staging an event of this magnitude. Thank you to the tournament committee, which remained true to Ryan as it focused on all the small details which truly celebrated the person he was. Thank you to the countless volunteers for sharing their time and talents in order to make the day a memorable one. Thank you to all the participants and sponsors who recognized that the best way to honor Ryan’s life is to support a cause that is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others. Although words can not truly convey our appreciation, it is our hope that everyone involved with the Ryan T. Lee Golf Classic understands that their actions have helped to ease the pain of a grieving family while giving rise to a charitable foundation which will continue to do good for others.

A red-shirted player does not lose that year of eligibility. DeLorenzo said if it was up to him, he would play this fall. “But it’s a win-win. board members will read about the issues in order to become educated. Brochu said that serving on the board requires prep work. They don’t arrive at the meeting, pick up their packet of information, and develop an opinion in the moment. “We shouldn’t approach this work like we are amateurs,” he said. Several members said any dissention is worked out in

committees. They listen to each other and respect each others’ positions. Once the motion reaches the board meeting, the motion is crafted into a measure everyone can agree on. Cynthia Kobus, the shortest serving member on the board, gave an example of this process in action. A few months ago, Kobus worked

from his duties at St. Paul Church and from the Franciscan Friars after his arrest. On July 4, Miller was taken by Life Star to a local hospital for a medical emergency

the details of which have not been disclosed. (Michael Miller is scheduled for a hearing at New Britain Superior Court Sept. 15.)

tion differently. President of the Board of Education, Gary Brochu explained that “It’s like how a family should work.” He added that the way the board operates is a model for legislatures and other governing bodies. Some board members explained it as a different way of operating. No dissenting votes does not necessarily mean no dissention, they point out. The new process begins with a clearly defined goal: to give Berlin students a highquality education. Council member John Richards said “I guess my first allegiance is to students” because they can’t speak for themselves. To prepare for meetings,

the “Safe Environment Program” which requires background checks for all personnel who have regular contact with children and young people and includes Virtus training on sexual awareness for all such personnel, and seminars. with a commission to create a list of books for this year’s summer reading. One of the books made her uncomfortable. She wasn’t happy with some of the themes presented in one book. Kobus spoke up and the rest of the committee listened. The book was taken off. This allowed her to support the resolution. “Any BOE aspires to be apolitical,” Richards said. The members said they leave partisanship behind and only focus on the goal of creating quality education.

The board is made up of seven registered Democrats — Kobus being the only independent on the board. She explained that she became an independent because she saw how party lines sharply polarized people. She said she thinks more conservatively on most issues, but liberally on educational ones. However, Kobus has not felt any pressure to vote a certain way or stay silent on certain issues. She said that when entering the board of education, she was concerned about that, but “I’ve been pleased with the experience.” To sit on the Board of Edu-

cation, party affiliation is not taken into account. A person wishing to run must gather enough petitions and then run in an election as an individual. “Individuals come to us as individuals,” Brochu said. Brochu said the board was recognized five years in a row for being an effective school board by the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education. According to CABE, the Berlin school board is a Level 2 board of distinction. To be eligible for Level 2 recognition, the board must have received a Level 1 award twice in the last four years.

A vehicle is deemed to have been specially equipped or modified for transporting handicapped or medically incapacitated persons if the vehicle is registered in the name of a person with a State of Connecticut handicapped parking permit and alterations to the vehicle include one or more of the following: special hand controls, lifts, ramps, special seating or stretchers, significant modifications to accommodate medical equipment such as oxygen or mechanical respirators, and other similar significant alterations.
