PLAINVILLE — No. 13 Sheehan celebrated its first trip to the state girls basketball finals in 19 years with a 62-59 victory over No. 8 Berlin in the Class M semifinals on Monday night.
Those being held in the police station lockup will no longer be behind bars once a project to replace the cell doors is complete. The new doors will have a metal frame encasing solid pieces of translucent security plastic, preventing inmates from being able to tie anything to the door, said Jeffrey Jagoe, who works for Tomlinson Hawley Patterson, one of contractors selected for the work.
The Titans (19-7) trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, but were powered to the win by a career-high 36 points by senior Liv Robles. The teams exchanged leads several times down the stretch. Caitlyn Hunt put the Titans on top for good with a dish from Robles with 1:16 left in the fourth. Sheehan made just enough free throws down the stretch to seal it. “I’ve been working since my freshman year along with all of these girls to get a chance at this great opportunity. I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” Robles said. “We kept fighting and we came back and won it.” Sheehan will play No. 2 Cromwell, which defeated No. 3 Kolbe Cathedral 51-47 in Monday’s other Class M semifinal. Sheehan and Cromwell will play for the state title this weekend at Mohegan Sun. Sheehan will be playing for its second state title on program

Police Chief John Klett said the change is long overdue. An inmate attempted to hang himself using the bars in 2016. Fortunately, officers were alerted by a dispatcher and were able to intervene. See Cell, A8
