BHS students shadow Comcasters By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
Students from Berlin high school toured the Comcast regional headquarters on New Park Drive in Berlin as part of a job shadowing program that is now in its second year. State House Majority Leader and representative for Berlin and Southington Joe Aresimowicz joined State Representative for Berlin and Meriden Catherine Abercrombie and BHS Students at Comcast in Berlin during the kick-off for Berlin Mayor Rachel Rochette their day of job shadowing. Voter turnout for the budget referendum was low, but the preliminary results are in from the Registrar’s office. At 1,522 Berlin-registered voters plus 15 Berlin property owners, the turnout exceeded last year’s at 1,172. 720 voted “Yes,” (46.8 percent) and 817 voted “No” (53.2 percent). Turnout was already looking low at around 10:00 AM when district 2 moderator Scott Veley said that turnout at the American Legion was typical thus far for the annual referendum. At 8 A.M., only 30 voters had visited each district, and by 10 A.M. the
numbers had barely climbed to hover around 50 or 60. At the polls at the American Legion and Griswold School, signs advocating for lower taxes and for voters to vote “No” on the budget were present. All signage was outside of the 75 foot legal boundary which such signs are not allowed to cross. Now that the budget has gone to referendum, it will be returned to the council for further consideration, after which the council will vote to adopt a finalized budget. Join the conversation about the referendum on our website by visiting http://tinyurl.com/BCBudget2014.

rules of geocaching, Medina said, is that if you take an object from a cache, you must leave one of equal or greater value. Kids really enjoy exchanging toys with caches, Medina said. Caching can get even more complex with “puzzle caches,” which require seekers to solve a riddle to dis-

Connecticut area are “a pretty close-knit community” that regularly holds events, including trips to restaurants, hiking, and even kayaking, according to Wills. Geocaching.com plays a central role in the community by providing a hub where users can find nearby caches, organize events, communicate with other cachers, and even post caches of their own. Lee McFadden, who helped collect garbage, said that she enjoys geocaching “because I’ve learned some really interesting things about local history and seen some amazing sights I never would have if not for caching.” One of these sights was the old Nike Missile Base on Pinnacle Rock in Plainville on the
New England trail. The Nike Missile Base, a relic from the cold war that entered service in 1956, is named for the same Roman goddess of victory as the shoe company. Although many cachers are hiking enthusiasts, some caches can be found in urban environments as well. Waterbury resident Joe Medina, who participated in the earthday clean up, hunted down a cache at a Costco in Waterbury May 4. Medina said that he enjoys geocaching with his son, and that they sometimes participate with other families as well. One of the best parts about geocaching with kids, according to Medina, is that some of the larger caches, which are generally found on hiking trails, have small toys in them. One of the official

in speaking to students at the kick-off to the event, 9:00 a.m. on April 29. “We signed up for this event because we’re interested in business,” BHS student Karol Zawadzki said.
Zawadzki and other students take classes in entrepreneurship and accounting from Business teacher Lorraine Wicklund. “I think that job shadowing here prepares us for the future and makes us more aware of how jobs work in the real world after high
school,” Karol said. Aresimowicz said that Berlin is a special community, and that he has a great deal of affection for it, having personally gone through the Berlin school system at Willard, Mcgee, and Berlin High School. “There are certain times in
your life that I call ‘aha moments,’ when something really connects for you. It may happen today and it may not happen today. It can happen on the football field, the soccer or baseball field, the drama club, the debate team, or the chess club... Take in
this experience and see if something strikes you,” Aresimowicz said. Aresimowicz thanked Comcast for hosting the event. “There are numerous companies in the state
keychain resembling a dog tag that contains a unique tracking number used to move and verify the bug’s location online. One of these travel bug caches has even traveled to space. Waterbury native and NASA astronaut Rick Mastracchio, also known as cacher “AstroRM,” has hidden a geocache on the international space station in the form of a travel bug – one he hopes will return to earth and be replaced by a new bug placed by another space-travelling geocacher. Buffalo Wild Wings in Waterbury will be hosting an event for cachers to watch Mastracchio return from the International Space Station on May 13. Ron Ruel, who also attended the earth day event, has hidden a cache himself in the hiking trails at Wad-
sworth Park in Middlefield. When hiding a cache “you want to look for a good location, and to put it somewhere that people are going to enjoy themselves,” Ruel said. Caches have to follow certain guidelines, like being far enough away from railroad tracks, private property, and government buildings. Caches look like “all kinds of things,” Ruel said, but many of them are Tupperware containers, five gallon buckets, or film canisters. “I’ve seen a fake birdhouse with a cache in it. The possibilities are limitless.” Sometimes caches are mistaken for trash, although this is very rare, Ruel said. Geocaches have even been mistaken for bombs by police in states across the country. Geocaching.com encourages users not to hide caches near “sensitive infrastructure” to
prevent such misunderstandings as the hobby expands. Cachers are also encouraged to use transparent containers and to clearly label all objects as geocaches. PVC pipes, in particular, may look like pipe bombs to law enforcement officials. Anyone can start geocaching, according to Wills, who said that many people already have the only tool they really need – a GPS device or smartphone. Geocaching.com features videos explaining the rules, and how to get started in playing the real-life treasure hunting game.

Opinion Sterling situation stresses journalistic downside By Ken Lipshez
Special to The Citizen
The Donald Sterling outrage that has spread like a prairie wildfire across the realm of sports has another side to which the impetuous pay little heed. Before anybody even slightly misconstrues what I’m about to say, I was mortified by the comments that apparently express Sterling’s true feelings. How dare he evaluate another human being based on skin color? How ignorant could he be to belittle the very people who are the heartbeat of his business’ existence? What he said was despicable, and the eloquent message that new commissioner Adam Silver delivered was right on target. I feel for Doc Rivers, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and the rest of the Los Angeles Clippers, who presently are competing on the NBA’s biggest stage with a knot in the pit of their stomachs. I feel for the team’s fans, wondering whether they should boycott the games as a response to Sterling’s hypocrisy or root for a gallant group with a legitimate chance to win the NBA championship. Is there truly a person on the face of the planet who feels any remorse for Sterling? If there is, he or she better express themselves carefully, perhaps in
the middle of a desert or a rocket ship to Mars, which brings me to the point made by Hallof-Famer Kareem Ken Lipshez Abdul-Jabbar among From the others. Something Lip is truly amiss when people in the comfort of their own homes can have their innermost thoughts recorded clandestinely and broadcast across the face of the Earth. From what I’ve read, it sounds pretty obvious this V. Stiviano set Sterling up like a bowling pin. Evidence seems to suggest that she engaged in embezzlement and subsequently blackmail. It’s said that Sterling is, or was, an astute, calculating businessman, but the temptation of a beautiful woman and the egotism that comes with having her on his arm in public reinforces his image as a doddering 80-year-old buffoon. Jabbar forcefully noted in a column for Time. com, “She was like a sexy nanny playing ‘pin the fried chicken on the Sambo.’ She blindfolded him and spun him around until he was just blathering all sorts of incoherent racist sound bites that had the news media peeing
Something is truly amiss when people in the comfort of their own homes can have their innermost thoughts recorded clandestinely and broadcast across the face of the Earth. themselves with glee.” Our news sources are tripping over themselves, procuring quotes from the basketball cognoscenti all the way to the White House, on how contemptible Sterling’s comments were. I feel such coverage is an insult to the intelligent reader. We know that most everybody is mortified by Sterling’s blather. The best stories I’ve read clued me in about who and what V. Stiviano appears to be and the messages Sterling sent out long ago that established him as being racially insensitive. What journalism has become makes me sick. I refuse to mention the two sleaze-driven websites that thrust this “news” into the public eye, and speak to the contradictory nature of our contemporary culture. People from liberal think tanks like the ACLU were up in arms when it was suggested that surveillance cameras be used on public

streets to help law enforcement identify potential troublemakers. But recording somebody without their knowledge and using it to expose their frailties is fine in satiating our society’s clamoring for celebrity dirt. Here’s what I choose to take from the episode. Sterling, after publicly apologizing to Magic Johnson, Doc Rivers, the Clippers and their fans, should be forced to sell the team. A portion of the proceeds should be earmarked for organizations that sincerely promote diversity without
prejudice. As Silver said, the NBA is in the midst of one of the most exciting postseasons in its glorious history and its integrity must be upheld. It has long been my belief that NBA players are the finest athletes in the world, and the league has been very progressive in bringing together people of all races, colors and creeds. The garbage that gets passed off by amateurs in the social media can never replace honest journalism, for See Downside / Page 11
A good laugh for Mother’s Day While Mother’s Day is filled with sentiment and warm-fuzzy thoughts — as well it should be — there’s another side of motherhood to explore. There are lots of moms who appreciate how much a sense of humor can help when it comes to the world’s toughest job. We’ve gathered a few famous quotes on the topic from a range of observers. Share a laugh with your mother this Mother’s Day and see which of these funny quotes rings true for her experience. — The editors “I want my children to have all the things I couldn’t afford. Then I want to move in with them.” - Phyllis Diller “The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for 30 years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found.” - Calvin Trillin “A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.” - Tenneva Jordan “My mother’s menu
consisted of two choices: Take it or leave it.” - Buddy Hackett “Any mother could perform the jobs of several air-traffic controllers with ease.” - Lisa Alther “My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it.” - Mark Twain “If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?” - Milton Berle “When your mother asks, ‘Do you want a piece of advice?’ it is a mere formality. It doesn’t matter if you answer yes or no. You’re going to get it anyway.” - Erma Bombeck (And a few last thoughts from that prolific writer “author unknown.”) Working mothers are guinea pigs in a scientific experiment to show that sleep is not necessary to human life. - Unknown “I’d like to be the ideal mother, but I’m too busy raising my kids.” - Unknown “To the world you might just be one person, but to one person you might be the world.” - Unknown

Sports Redcoats baseball win streak at nine by Nate Brown
The Berlin Citizen
Baseball As the weeks pass, the performances from the Redcoats have seemingly improved with every outing. The boys won all three of their contests last week, outscoring their opponents 54-9 in the process, and extended their winning streak to nine games.
The Coats began their week with an impressive 11-0 shutout over Hall thanks in part to a seven run explosion in the bottom of the third. Senior Darren Grabowski was 2 for 2 in the contest with a double, triple and three runs batted in. Senior Greg Konowski finished 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while junior Jared Gallagher earned the win. In the team’s matchup against Bulkeley, the Red-
coats crushed the Bulldogs, 23-4, scoring 13 runs before their opponents got a run across home plate. The team was able to overcome a sloppy defensive outing that included five errors with 15 hits in a game that they were rarely threatened. Senior Dave Condon earned the victory. The boys finished their week with equally dominating 20-5 win over Maloney on Friday. Grabowski, Konowski,

The girls began the week with a strong 9-4 win over Simsbury as they jumped out in front early with two runs in the top of the first inning. Just for fun, he saved another game. Yet he is not a player who was on the college radar screens for a long time. “He’s a late-bloomer type of kid,” said Northwest coach Cory Carlson. “He had a really strong season for Rob Manzo [coach] of the Berlin Legion
team last summer and that caught college coaches’ attention. That, combined with his performances at some showcases, really got colleges, including Division I schools in the area, interested.” His numbers for the Berlin Legion were impressive. He

had five wins and a save for the Zone 3 team, struck out 49 in 47 innings and pitched to an ERA of 0.59. “I went out for Legion at first just to see how I would do,” said Luciani. “But Rob Manzo and assistant coach Gary Val Etten were a great help to me. They put me in a position to be successful. I did well the first couple of times, then things just snowballed for the rest of the season.” Luciani had an elbow injury -- nothing major -- in his sophomore summer, so sat out a couple of months. All of which set the stage for him to burst onto the scene last summer. “I’ve pitched my whole life,” said Luciani. “But everything came together last year. But we would not be having this conversation if it were not for Dave Swanson [former Berlin High pitcher]. Since I was 12, he has been my personal coach and mentor. He taught me everything I know about baseball.” Quinnipiac wasn’t the only school seeking Luciani’s services. The University of Hartford and Merrimack came down to the wire with Quinnipiac. “As soon as I stepped on the campus of Quinnipiac, I felt like I belonged,” said Luciani. “It was a weird feeling, but I could have suited up to play right then.” Bates College, Fairfield See Luciani / Page 15

University, Marist and Fordham were also in the mix, but didn’t make Luciani’s final list. “He got a pretty good package from Quinnipiac,” said Carlson. “He’s a very smart kid and will not only be in a good baseball program where hopefully he will be able to contribute right away, but he will also get a good education.” Luciani, who transferred to Northwest after spending his freshman year at Berlin High, has made the Honor Roll every semester at the West Hartford school. He is a member of the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society and has a 3.7 grade point average. “I plan to major in political science; I love it,” said Luciani, who is the son of Tracey and Anthony Luciani. “Down the road I’d like to be in the FBI.” All that can wait as Luciani has a more immediate task in front of him. “I’m so happy to be playing for my high school team,” he said. “I just try to do the best I can. I’ve wanted to pitch for my high school team since I was five years old and ever since last summer, all I’ve thought about was pitching for my team this spring and so far, so good. “We want to win the state championship,” he said. “Our team goals are to win our division, the Central Connecticut Conference West, then to win the Class S championship. That’s all we’re focused on. Personal stats are great, but they don’t matter at all. It’s the state championship that counts.”

The boys clinched a hard fought 4-3 victory over Tolland thanks to top singles player senior Dan Rombola (6-2, 6-1) and all three Redcoats doubles teams: seniors Kris Langevin and Reid Hilbie (6-4, 6-3 in one doubles), senior Andrew Chyra and sophomore Jordan Chyra (63, 6-3 in two doubles), and se-

After getting blanked against Glastonbury, 7-0, the girls were able to end a frustrating six-match losing streak with a convincing 5-2 victory over Bristol Central. In the team’s two wins this season, the girls have walked away with 5-2 decisions in each. Unfortunately, the losses haven’t been nearly as promising. Rombola, junior Jack Stafstrom, senior Mike Gurrieri, and senior Brian Kennure won their singles matches while Langevin and Hilbie, Chyra and Chyra, and Mayer and Schlichting won their doubles matches. Rombola, Stafstrom, Chyra and Chyra, and Mayer and Schlichting all shutout their opponents, winning 6-0, 6-0 in their respective contests.
The three-time defending state champions suffered their first loss of the season last week in a difficult fashion before ending the week with a dominating win. The Redcoats played host to Simsbury last Monday, losing 191-189 on their home turf of Timberlin Golf Course. Mikayla Sheary of Simsbury was the match’s medalist with a best score of 40. Boys Golf While the Coats were only able to play one match last week due to the rain, the boys made the most of it, as they walked away with a 158-205 win over rival Plainville. The team is now 4-2 on the season. Senior captain Austin Forauer walked away as the match’s medalist, scoring a 36 at Tunxis Plantation in Farmington. The team score of 158 also became the squad’s new season best, beating their 162 they scored earlier this year against Platt and Bulkeley.
