The 75 members of the Berlin Marching Band are tuning up for another successful season as they prepare to entertain spectators during halftime at high school football games. “We have a really strong ensemble and I am proud of how hard they have worked,” said Jeff Sirois, band director at Berlin High School. The band members, a mix of girls and boys in grades 9 through 12, kicked off their season with a week-long band camp in August. They worked on their performance eight hours a day so they would be
ready for the first home game. “I’ve been watching the show get better and the kids more confident, which is really special for me to see,” Sirois said. Sirois said he meets with the band members four times a week in school as part of their curriculum and once a week in the evening and is impressed by how well the youngsters balance it all. “This is a great group of kids. They are also athletes and into other areas like robotics. They don’t just do music, these kids are very well-rounded,” said Sirois, a Berlin Marching Band alum. See Band / Page A6

standable. Photographing high school sports means spending a lot of time behind the wheel, late nights, dealing with harsh weather. But through it all, Leidemer kept right on truckin’. Passionate about the teams he covered, he would often shoot events five, six times a week. And this was just a hobby for him. He has a full-time job. While the extra income brought
in by his freelance photography was nice, that’s not what kept Leidemer traveling from frigid stadiums to steamy gymnasiums, year after year. For him, it was all about the student-athletes. I shot one shot to try to get it. When you see photos of a ball falling into a receiver’s hands, that was timed. That’s the thing I’m proudest of from a professional standpoint; being able to capture a split second like that.” Along with shooting the ‘major sports’ such as football, basketball, soccer and baseball, Leidemer always made it a point to photograph less-publicized teams, as well. He would often ply his craft at volleyball matches, wrestling meets, cheerleading competitions and powderpuff football games, coverage those competitors and coaches greatly
appreciated. “For a lot of kids, this is going to be it,” Leidemer said, speaking of the short shelf life of most athletes. While he’ll no longer be just feet away from the action, don’t be surprised to see Leidemer in the stands this year. “The only part that’s really gone is the photography, and being there every night,” he said. “I still see myself going to some of the games.” Leidemer believes people can take a lesson from his unexpected journey to semi-celebrity. “Experiment with some stuff. Step out of your comfort zone,” he said. “That’s what happened to me with this. This was an accident. And look how it turned out.”

Opinion Remembering Worthington Ridge Berlin Historical Society presents another Story Share program By Lorraine Stub Residents may know The Fuller Tavern, on the northeast corner at Sunset Lane and the Ridge, was noted in George Washington’s diary of Nov. 10, 1789 as being where he stopped for breakfast. No mention in the diary, but did you know legend is that townspeople waited so long for him to arrive that they were tipsy with rum, and the official greeter, “too
full for utterance,” unable to give his “Welcome to Worthington” speech? Despite the unraveling of ceremonies, a good time was had by all. In celebration of Berlin’s Worthington Historic District, Berlin Historical Society presents another “Story Share,” a series of group oral-history sessions focusing on the neighborhoods, industries and communities that characterized Berlin’s past. As with previous sessions, a slide show of photos from the museum’s archive will transport the audience back in time, stirring the memory pot for local legends, events and personal
experiences. The free public event takes place at the Berlin Senior Center, 33 Colonial Drive, Kensington, on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1 to 3 p.m. Attendees are asked to register by calling 860-8287006 by Sept. 15. We encourage you to bring old photos to be scanned at the event. Everyone in Connecticut is familiar with the Berlin Turnpike, but when diverted a block to the west, accidental travelers are astonished to find a timeline of architectural history running parallel to the Pike. Visitors to our town are greatly impressed by this quintessential old New England neighborhood
and its history. It’s the subject of walking tours, history books and local legends. While we will cover early history, as it is important to know where we came from, we are, also, interested in what people still remember. These are the stories for our group oral- history. Maybe you have memories of etching your name in the attic rafters at Worthington School, boarding the C, R & L bus at the top of Hudson Street, shopping at the First National Store, weaving leather crafts at the Community House playground, attending productions of the Berlin Playhouse, or getting
a marriage license at the old Town Hall. Maybe you have memories of the personalities who lived in or near Worthington Ridge. Even if you are new to town, or grew up in other neighborhoods, there is much to learn about the Worthington Ridge Historic District area in a “walking tour” where you don’t even have to leave your seat. For more information call the Berlin Historical Museum at 860-828-5114 or visit the Berlin Historical Society web site at berlincthistory. org/ or on Facebook at facebook.com/berlincthistorical The writer is secretary of the Berlin Historical Society.
Letters to the Editor A ‘clear vision’ for the town To the editor: It appears Anne Reilly has noticed that we are working hard to get out the message of the Democratic slate for Town Council. We have enjoyed speaking with the citizens of Berlin and they are overwhelmingly supportive of the work the Democrats have done over the past 12 years to restore the damage inflicted on the town by the last Republican council. The people we have met feel the Democratic council has a clear vision for what is necessary to maintain infrastructure, provide for essential services, and improve education for our children. The people we have met are also concerned that since the Republicans have never offered realistic solutions to the issues we face as a town, that they will resort to cutting funding and refusing state grants for important capital improvement projects necessary to improve the quality of life for all of the citizens of Berlin. We look forward to speaking with each and every one of you. Our doors are always open, and we are happy to speak with anyone who may have concerns or questions. JoAnn Angelico-Stetson and Kristin Campanelli, Democratic candidates for Town Council
Continue the progress To the editor: In their desperate attempt to regain control of the Town Council, the Berlin Republicans have trotted out their old political playbook. For the past 12 years they have offered nothing of substance other than their standard catch phrase “taxes are too high.” The fact is that the Democratic majority has led the way for significant positive progress while maintaining a stable tax rate that compares favorably with most of our surrounding towns. Working with our volunteer boards and commissions and our state legislative delegation, the Democratic majority has provided the leadership that has resulted in Sherwood Falls, Depot Crossing, Volunteer Park, modern and convenient trash removal, open space acquisition, great recreation programs and, very soon, a modern, state-of-theart high school for the next generation of students. In addition, there are exciting projects in the works including a revamped and improved train station with enhanced train service and more senior housing at the old Knights of Columbus site. Compare the last time the Republicans were in control: No money for school sports or extracurricular activities. Virtually no investment to maintain or improve our infrastructure.
The community was basically brought to its knees. The names have changed over the years but the philosophy remains the same. This election is clearly a contrast between continuing our positive growth and going backward. Please help the Berlin Democrats continue to work for you. Fred Jortner Berlin Democratic chairman
Heartfelt thanks
To the editor: On behalf of the family of Tyler Cop, we would like to thank you all very much for your donations, kind words and other expressions of sympathy. All these acts of kindness and love have certainly helped bring some comfort during this very difficult time for our family. A special thank you to the following for their compassion and dedicated service: Berlin Fire Department, East Berlin Fire Department, Berlin Police Department, Connecticut State Police, Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Cop Fund, you can do so by going to Gofundme.com/TCopFund or by sending a donation directly to: Tyler Cop Fund, c/o Farmington Bank, 1191 Farmington Ave., Berlin, CT 06037. September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month and the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library wants to make sure that everyone in the community has the smartest card of all – a library card. Snoopy is the American Library Association’s Honorary Chair for Library Card Sign-up Month 2015. In keeping with the Snoopy and “Peanuts” theme, our library is handing out packages of peanuts to those (without allergies) who sign up for a new card this month. Celebrated throughout the month of September, National Library Card Sign-Up Month encourages people to check out what’s new at the library by signing up for a library card. All Berlin residents are eligible for library cards – even babies. Libraries today offer so much more than just books. For example, did you know
we provide free WiFi, downloadable audiobooks, eBooks, streaming movies and online access to Consumer Reports, Ancestry.com and World Book? Libraries are also dynamic community centers. The Berlin-Peck Memorial Library has quiet study rooms, book discussion groups, musical performances, knitting groups and storytimes. We have new programs each month on a wide variety of topics for children, teens, adults and families. Actor Kirk Douglas once said about libraries, “My mother and father were illiterate immigrants from Russia. When I was a child they were constantly amazed that I could go to a building and take a book on any subject. They couldn’t believe this access to knowledge we have here in America. They couldn’t believe it was free.” While the public library has changed in many ways

Sports State football in ’15: Not the same old game By Bryant Carpenter
Special to The Citizen
After the outlier season of 2014, with its eight state champions, Connecticut high school football settles into what’s likely to be a more permanent groove here in the fall of 2015. That’s not to say it’s the same old landscape. Aside from the return to
three-round, four-division playoff format of Class LL, L, M and S, Connecticut football entered a new era when camps opened in August. The preseason got tighter and so did the state’s contact rules first put into place last year. The biggest change: Starting with the Sunday before Thanksgiving and continuing through the playoffs, there can be no live contact — defined
as drills or game simulations conducted at full speed, in full pads, in which players are tackled to the ground (as compared to “wrap” or “thud” contact in which players remain on their feet). Also, a bye week is now a part of every team’s schedule, which is capped at 10 regular-season games. During the bye week, there can be no live contact during practice.
The changes were enacted for the sake of player safety. With a growing awareness of concussions, in particular, the CIAC was compelled to adopt rules to reduce risk of injury. Coaches say they have no problem with the contact limitations. The new rules formalize what most teams were doing already to stay as healthy as possible. “This is not 20-25 years ago

The groom is a graduate of Berlin High School and the University of South Carolina. He is currently employed with TIAA-CREF. The wedding took place on Saturday, June 13, 2015, at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, in Charlotte, N.C. The reception took place at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, in Charlotte, N.C. where it’s smacking, punishing every single day,” said Mike Drury, coach of the two-time defending Class LL champion Southington Blue Knights. “If you come to any of our practices, it’s very rarely we even have a kid on the ground.” “If you’re beating the hell out of your kids during the week,” remarked Wilcox Tech coach Trevor Jones, “what do you have left for the game?” What coaches do have a problem with is the tighter preseason. It’s been reduced by four days. Preseason is when teams focus most on the fundamentals of blocking and tackling. It’s when teams are getting in game shape. It’s when teams most need live contact. They get it: 120 minutes per week plus one scrimmage. Once the regular season kicks in, the allotment drops to 90 minutes a week. But with four fewer days on top of their own self-imposed days of rest — you can’t work the boys everyday in preseason or you’ll burn them out in August — coaches fear a domino effect: Teams will rush and cram stuff in, which means teaching will suffer and players might not learn proper technique. Which means they might be more susceptible to injury. Which defeats the whole purpose of the new rules. “The preseason is where you’re trying to get guys ready. They’ve got to get used to the contact, especially a team like ours,” said first-year Lyman Hall coach Aidan Lynch. “We end up getting a lot of guys who never played before. They’ve got to learn how to hit. They’ve got to learn how to take a hit. There’s really only way to do that and that’s to hit. You can’t really do that with a bag. “I think it’s great they’re trying to keep the game intact while getting it safer,” Lynch added. “They’re trying to protect the integrity of the game and protect it from people criticizing it, which is great. just hope we don’t get to the point that we’re not able to get kids prepared to play a more experienced team and they’re not ready to hit and they get hurt because of it.” Given that logic, coaches say, shouldn’t preseason be extended rather than shortened? “The basis for the rule changes are for the right reasons. They’re trying to keep young men safe,” Cheshire coach Don Drust said. “The challenge is there’s a very fine line from taking time away. Can you get prepared? “I don’t know. It’s too early to say if it’s good or bad. We’ll have to see how it plays out. You’re going to have to look at injuries and look at how games roll.” The postseason present challenges as well. Last year, playoff teams could still engage in up to 60 minutes of live contact a week. Now, at a time when they’re prepping for their biggest games, there can be none. “That’s tough, at a critical time of year. We’re go-

regardless of who is next offensively, you can count on the defense to keep Berlin on the winning side more often than not. Another season of double-digit wins is definitely attainable. Boys soccer Head coach: Sal Parafati (second year, 6-6-4) Assistant: Dominic Costa Last year: After losing 14 seniors from the 2013 squad, the ’14 team put together a 6-6-4 season before losing to Maloney in the first round of the Class L tournament on penalty kicks, 4-3. Key losses: Evan Hale, Nick Vreeland, Devon Reilly set the tone defensively as Wojciech Kajzer was a sound keeper between the pipes. This season: Seniors Evan Cornwall and Justin Park will provide scoring threats for Berlin, as will junior Evan Hilbie. Outlook: Year 1 for Parafati could be considered nothing but a success, especially after seeing so many players leave from the year before. With a system in place and plenty more returners than last year, the boys should improve off last year’s overall mark and could push for an appearance in the state quarterfinals. Girls soccer Head coach: Steve Ya-
nosy (14th year, 165-49-17) Assistant: Katie Amenta Last year: A fantastic 122-2 regular season record helped the girls capture the CCC South Division regular season title and the fourthseed in the Class M tournament before being upended in the second round by East Catholic, 2-0. Key losses: Sarah Bosco provided plenty of offensive pop as Cara Johnson, Erin Goodwin and Olivia Jacques were strong throughout every contest. This season: Goalkeeper Michaela Dehm is back for her third year on varsity. Fellow seniors Sophia Morell, Kim Tencza, Stephanie Trevathan, Olivia Norton, Taylor Budney and Michelle Grieco will provide leadership both on and off the pitch for the locals. Outlook: Replacing Bosco’s contributions on offense may take a couple contests to find balance up front, but foes might as well not even attempt to score on Berlin’s defense. Between a strong back line and Dehm’s skills, opponents won’t find many opportunities to celebrate this fall. Another impressive regular season looks to be on the horizon, and expect the girls to make a deeper postSee Begin / Page A20

Commission says illegal pumping is a problem Many Kensington Fire District customers have noticed an increase in their sewer cost. This is due to the work being done on the Mattabassett treatment plant in Cromwell. One of the biggest problems is the infiltration into the local sewers. Some of this infiltration comes from the fact that many of our sewer lines date back to the early 1920s and ground water is entering through old joints. The old joints are being sealed to eliminate this problem. However, there are many houses with cellar drains, roof downspouts, and sump pumps connected illegally to the sanitary sewer system, which is costly, because the Kensington Fire District pays for each gallon. Roof downspouts and cellar drains are not that common. Sump pumps are the biggest contributor to the amount of water entering our sewer system. This is illegal and the biggest problem for our sanitary sewer system and can cause increased sewer charges to customers. If a licensed plumber connects a sump pump to the sanitary sewer, he or she could lose their license. It is against state plumbing code to connect the sump pump to the sanitary sewer, similar to installing a bathroom in your basement without a back water valve. The Kensington Fire District is currently checking for any systems connected to the sanitary sewer. For questions or concerns, call (860) 8281782. Kensington Fire District will not pursue any action for voluntary correction. — Submitted by the Kensington Fire District Board of Commissioners

season run in ‘15. Girls volleyball Head coach: Bob Tarigo (33rd year, 436-200) Assistant: Nancy DeBlasio (junior varisty), Marc Asselin (freshman) Last year: After a oneyear layoff, the Lady Redcoats (9-9) returned to the Class M playoffs, falling to eventual quarterfinalist East Haven in five games. Key losses: Abbie Underwood and Alyssa Germano had the knowledge and skills to lead Berlin every match, as Nidhi Patel provided countless assists throughout the year. This season: Senior captain Julia Lagace, last year’s team leader in assists, returns to lead the way with the Pskowski (seniors Sarah and Megan, a captain) and the Perrone (seniors Angie and Alex, also a captain) sisters. Junior Nina D’Amato is also expected to make her presence known, as the team will have to fill seven
roster spots for the fall. Outlook: Despite needing to fill seven varsity roster spots this fall, plenty of help from last year’s 15-3 junior varsity team should soften the blow. Seniors Rachel Steck, Krista Fasciano and Emma Wade will help off the bench as they look to make their impact at the next level. With such strong talent returning, a season similar to last year’s is to be expected of this squad. Expect plenty of well-earned wins and hardfought losses from this feisty and scrappy group. Girls swimming /diving Head coach: Andy Alhberg (second year) Assistant: Andrea Gallo D iv i n g c o a c h : Ja n Zagorski Last year: Berlin enjoyed a stellar regular season that led to a sixth place finish in the Class S finals (310.5 points). The team also finished 27th at the State Open (58 points). Key losses: A strong class of 2015 leaves behind plenty of holes: Kelsie Anderson, Kayla Cervoni, Holly Chirico, Courtney

Nelson, Katherine Kolc and Kelsey Kozikowski led the way consistently for the Redcoats. This season: Senior Olivia DeGroff is sure to have a season for the ages, as the upperclassman will most likely threaten several school records. Senior captains Emily Dymczyk (diver) and Valerie Sternberg (breaststroke) have shown, and will continue to provide, leadership for the young squad. Juniors Stephanie Humen and Hannah Lavoie will also make a splash this season. Outlook: While finishing high at states again may not be in the cards for the locals, Alhberg and his staff showed last season that they will help individuals to improve quite a bit. Dual meet victories may be harder to come by, but individuals such as DeGroff and Humen are sure to shine this year. Expecting anything less than a top 20 finish at states would be foolish. Cross country Head coach: Steve Soucy (seventh year)
