Police will host drug ‘Take Back’ By Ashley Kus
Special to The Citizen
The Berlin Police Department will conduct the sixth annual “Take Back” initiative sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The initiative seeks to remove expired or unused prescription drugs from homes. Residents can drop off unwanted drugs at a curbside box at Town Hall, 240 Kens-
ington Road, without getting out of their vehicles. “It removes prescription drugs in households away from children,” Berlin Police Sgt. John McCormack said. The DEA warns that drugs left unused in homes can result in abuse and can be accidentally ingested by children. Accidental poisonings and overdoses are at alarming rates nationwide. Matt teaches at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford and Atla teaches privately. “I quit my job as a client relation manager at IGX to give music my full time attention,” she said. one of the only places in Connecticut to study jazz voice at a young age,” she said. “My parents took me to the Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival in Moodus every summer. I was really drawn in. I loved the music, it always fascinated me.” Most of the tracks on “Pause” were recorded at Manor Recording in Middletown. “They have a Steinway piano from the 1920s, so it was a good fit for us,” Atla said. A few tracks were recorded in Michigan, where Jon Hendricks, a well-known jazz singer, accompanied them. Hendricks, a renowned scat singer and former member of the vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, said, “I’ve known Atla for some years now and I must say, she has

I’m scatting and handling melodies different every time.” Matt’s piano style is based on his love of blues and stride. He learned to play from his grandfather’s player piano. “My grandfather had a player piano and I grew up learning those piano rolls and loving the style that was played by Fats Waller, Art Tatum and other jazz masters,” he said. A Middletown man accused of robbing a Durham bank is a suspect in bank robberies in several other towns including Cheshire and Berlin. Matthew Dragone, 31, of Middletown, was arrested Friday, Sept. 18 and charged in the robbery of a Liberty Bank in Durham on Sept. 3, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly and FBI Special Agent Patricia M. Ferrick. He appeared in federal court Monday, Sept. 21 and remains in custody. Dragone is a suspect in at least five other robberies around the state, including an Aug. 12 robbery at Webster Bank on Highland Avenue in Cheshire and the Aug. 13 robbery of TD Bank on Farmington Avenue in Berlin, Daly said. Dragone is accused of walking into Liberty Bank, 357 Main St. in Durham, wearing dark sunglasses, a blue-striped dress shirt and
a white baseball cap with a Coors Lite logo, according to Daly. While holding a cellphone to his ear, Dragone walked up to a teller with a bag and a note demanding money and an order not to include a dye pack or GPS. The teller placed $1,490 in the bag and handed it to Dragone, who left the bank and drove away, Daly said. About 50 yards from the bank, authorities found the blue-striped dress shirt and baseball cap on the side of the road. Tests of the shirt revealed Dragone’s DNA, according to Daly. Dragone is also a suspect in the robbery of the Liberty Bank in Deep River on Aug. 17 and the TD Bank in Killingworth on Sept. 3, Daly said. He is also a suspect in the attempted holdup of the Webster Bank in Cromwell on Aug. 31. While searching Dragone’s home Sept. 16, authorities found clothing, sunglasses and bags used in the Durham bank robbery. A joint investigation including the FBI, state and local police is ongoing.

Special to The Citizen
The All Night Graduation Party committee at Berlin High School bets that people will have a great time at its fundraiser planned at Mohegan Sun Friday, Oct. 16 to help raise money for the Class of 2016’s graduation night party. Chairman Bill Conticello is excited for the trip to the casino because it is a fun night out for anyone who is over 21, while supporting the senior class. part at 5 p.m. The bus ride includes raffles and prizes up to $100, food, wine and beer, and a $15 dollar gambling ticket to be used at the casino. Conticello has been involved in fundraising for the All Night Graduation Party since his son graduated in 2014. He thinks the All Night Graduation Party is a great experience for the senior class, as it likely the last time classmates will be all together. “It’s a wonderful keepsake,” said Conticello. In addition to the trip to Mohegan Sun, the All Night Graduation Party committee
can be found serving up food at the Berlin Fair and delivering “Flocking Flamingos” to front yards in the spring, all to raise money for the senior class. The committee is also involved with Mr. BHS, as well as many bake sales. Committee member Christina Lapierre points out, “The 2016 All Night Graduation Party is a way to keep kids safe in an environment that is drug and alcohol free.” For more information and tickets to the Mohegan Sun event, contact Bill Conticello at cellocoach@aol.com by Thursday, Oct. 1.

Letters to the Editor Realistic solutions To the editor: It’s clear that former BOE members JoAnn Angelico-Stetson’s and Kristin Campanelli’s “clear vision for our town” if elected will prolong the liberal majorities’ unbridled spending over the last 12 years. Campanelli and Stetson allege “the Republicans have never offered realistic solutions ...” They are already misleading you. Hundreds of realistic solutions have been offered. But instead of crossing the aisle, the liberals react by voting down the minority, refusing to vote, censoring discussion or declining to put Republican “realistic solutions” on the agenda. Angry when you paid your taxes? Stop them! Use only four votes for our team. Remember in November. Scott Veley Former deputy mayor
Responsible leadership
To the editor: The Democratic Chairman claims Republicans brought our community to its knees. If he is referring to fiscal responsibility, he is correct. Last year’s initial budget was fiscally responsible, accounting for the impact of our first major principle payments for our high school renovation. As soon as our school board expressed displeasure, the loss of sports was immediately threatened. The Democratic councilors backed down from the budget in order to win political favor. Projects have been undertaken, and now citizens must foot the bill. Remember in November to cast only four votes for Berlin Town Council. Vote Republican. Our team will take leadership responsibly. Charles Paonessa Republican councilman

Opinion We’re more disconnected By Mike Anderson Last week, I had WiFi installed in my house for the first time. Now I can stream movies, check e-mails, all the lovely things that can be done without needing a direct connection to the Internet. I can even link my TV, and my cell phone to the WiFi connection and run those devices as well. Sure life has gotten somewhat easier with technology, but is it truly for the better? The one thing I don’t see getting better is the way we deal with people on a personal level. Yesterday I watched someone text another person, who was 30 feet away. Yes, just 30 feet! When I asked why they didn’t just walk over to each other, they told me that it would take too much time. More and more, we just don’t talk to each other any more. Next time you are out for dinner or a drink, look at the people around you. Chances are the majority are on their phone surfing the net, or checking e-mails, instead of having a meaningful and connected conversation with the person they are with. Having grown up in the 1970s, I remember the time before computers, the Internet, cell phones, Xbox, and YouTube. Mine was really the last generation to have to talk to each other in person. My grandmother had a bell on the back of the house, which she would ring to tell us when to come home for dinner. She didn’t send us a text. We all walked around with-
out people having any idea how to get a hold of us. Honestly, most of didn’t even have an answering machine yet. We had to actually be home to answer the phone, if you wanted to talk to us. And if you called us, and if we were on the phone, you got a busy signal, and there was no call waiting. We had only four, five television channels, and you had to physically get up to change channels, and point an antenna in a certain direction to get better reception. What I’m trying to point out is that technology isn’t always for the better. Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Verizon; none of them really care about you. When I grew up there wasn’t even a supermarket we could go to. Neighborhoods each had their own local grocers. My local grocer was named Harry Pentore. Harry ran Town Food Center on Farmington Ave. Everyone in the neighborhood knew Harry, and vice versa. Harry ran tabs for the families that came to his store. Not credit cards, mind you. Harry trusted people to pay him back, and I don’t recall that service coming with 19.8 percent APR like they whack you with at Target. He even had a baby blue Dodge van, with a three-speed column shift, and he would deliver the groceries directly to you, if you couldn’t make it to the store. Harry is quite honestly one of the nicest people I have ever met. He took care of our neighborhood, and made sure every kid got a box of animal crackers when their mother took them shopping. They
had a butcher counter, and fresh produce, and maybe they didn’t have a TV/audio section like Walmart does, but you could always count on Rich or Jeff cutting your chicken breasts exactly the way your family liked them. Of course, Town Food Center has been gone for about 30 years now, but many of those Mom & Pop stores still exist in Berlin, and they are probably run by some awesome local people. I suggest spending your money at those spots. In addition to that, try talking to your loved ones! Texts and e-mails are nice, but nothing will replace an actual human connection we get from communicating with each other. If you go out to dinner, leave your cell phone in the car, nobody needs to get a hold of you there. Technology doesn’t need to follow you everywhere you go! Nothing pains me more than listening to people on their phones in public bathrooms. Come on people, couldn’t that phone call have waited? Embrace being free of the technology, and going off the grid for a while. Do you really need to know that your eighth grade friend just got a new dog? (I’m talking about you, Facebook.) And by all means, if you bump into Harry Pentore somewhere in town, give the man a hug. There really aren’t many nicer people in the world. P.S. I hope you read this in the actual paper you got mailed to your house, and not in the online edition. The writer is a Kensington resident.

AWARD WINNING COVERAGE Berlin Police Officer Brandon Lagueux presents Kidal Siddartha with a COIN award.
‘Quick thinking’ helps nab robber By Deputy Chief John Klett One goal of the Berlin Police Department is to provide service to our community. We accomplish this in a variety of ways and our officers frequently make contacts at our schools, businesses, and places where our citizens congregate. We are continually looking for new ways to strengthen and build relationships with the people we serve. We have developed a new initiative that accomplishes this. The consistent, effective investigation, prosecution, and reduction of crime cannot be accomplished by the police without the support and cooperation of the citizens. The COIN program (Community Officer Investment Network) aims to reward and recognize members of the community who have made significant contributions to an incident that might not have been resolved successfully without the citizen’s participation. The COIN program involves the issuance of challenge coins to our officers that they can present to individuals who meet this criterion. The police department will publicize each success story in hopes of strengthening our network of partners. The COIN program aims to
educate citizens of their obligation to the community and the shared responsibility for its welfare. Our department seeks to further the acceptance of these duties through recognition of those citizens whose actions have contributed to the accomplishments of the department’s mission or the safety of the community. We believe that a small investment in our community can have a big impact on public safety and crime reduction. All Berlin officers have been issued a challenge coin that may be presented to a citizen when the officer feels that the citizen has made a significant contribution to an incident that might not have been successfully resolved without the citizen’s participation. The Berlin Police Department had been investigating two armed robberies at the same location that were believed to have been committed by the same individual. On Thursday, July 23 at approximately 5:33 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 28 at approximately 10:37 a.m. the Shell Gas Station, 1376 Berlin Turnpike, was robbed by this individual who displayed a handgun. The individual was described as a white male, See Robbery / Page 17

Health Create a healthy-weight lifestyle By Jane Grant There are many ways to lose weight – some sensible, others not so much. In fact, the Internet is loaded with tons of ridiculously bad advice on how to slim down. Despite what you hear in the media, the basics of achieving a healthy weight haven’t changed all that much in the past few decades. Sure, there is a lot of debate about the details, but the overall principles remain unchanged. Listed here are eight time-tested principles to living a healthy-weight lifestyle. 1. Do no harm. A healthy-weight lifestyle is safe and respectful of your physical and mental well-being. You shouldn’t feel deprived, fatigued or frustrated. In fact, if you don’t feel good, you’re probably doing something that’s not good for you.
2. Ditch the diet. If you’re considering a diet that doesn’t seem like a reasonable and sustainable way to eat most of the time, not just for a month while you’re trying to lose weight, than it’s not for you. You’re better off giving up on dieting all together. 3. Nourish your body. Eat enough food to nourish your body and meet your basic metabolic needs. In other words, don’t starve yourself. When you feel hungry and deprived most of the time, it can negatively impact other areas of your life. When you don’t feel well, you don’t do well. 4. Eat a plant-based diet. The science is clear. Although meat and animal products can be part of a healthy diet, we need to eat more vegetables, fruits and unrefined whole grains. Eating a plant-based diet and less processed food supports a healthy lifestyle by promoting weight loss, improving heart health,
Flu clinics set for Oct. 14 and 21 The Berlin Visiting Nurse Association has scheduled flu clinics for Wednesday, Oct. 14, 8:30 to 10 a.m., at Town Hall and Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1 to 2:30 p.m., at Berlin-Peck Memorial Library. The clinics are for Berlin residents and town employees, over the age of 18. No appointments are needed. Ar-
rangements can be made for residents who are homebound and unable to attend. Traditional Medicare, Aetna, Connecticare, Cigna and Blue Cross insurances are accepted. Those with no insurance will be charged $25 (cash or check). For more information, call the Berlin VNA at 860-828-7030.
maintaining normal blood pressure, and preventing diabetes. When it comes to fruits and vegetables, aim for at least five servings per day; ideally eat more veggies than fruit. 5. Be fat-savvy. Although fats are part of a healthy diet, saturated fat from animals and processed foods is not a good choice. Aim to get most of your fat from healthier sources such as nuts and seeds, olives, avocados and coldpressed oils. And don’t overdo it. Healthy or not, eating too much fat can contribute to weight gain. 6. Eat in moderation. Moderation in anything is hard to come by in our culture. We seem to always be looking for more, more, more, faster, faster, faster. When it comes to eating, however, it’s better to eat less and eat slow. Not only will you digest your food better, you will feel satisfied

with less. And slow, mindful eating enhances the pleasure of the dining experience. 7. Move it. A healthy lifestyle is a physically active lifestyle. It doesn’t matter how well you eat, you still need to move. Healthy eating and exercising go hand-in-hand. You can’t exercise your way out of a bad diet, and you can’t eat your way to physical fitness. You need to do both. No matter what age or stage of life you are at, being active will improve your sense of well-being. 8. Get personal. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to healthy eating. The best plan for you is as individual as you are. It should be created around your personal eating style, taste preferences, schedule, financial means, family needs, and health considerations. Sports Lee tournament shines through the clouds In a weekend that featured plenty of gloomy storm clouds, nothing could over-
shadow the stellar competition at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate held at Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield. The University of Rhode
Island took home top team honors on Sunday, Sept. 13, shooting a two-day total of 574 (two-under par) to edge out Bryant University (575, one-under). In the individual scoring, Shane Crampton of St. Francis University (Pa.) took home medalist honors as he outlasted Joe Leavitt (URI) and Joe Walp (Bryant) in a three-way playoff. Crampton shot a 141 (three-under par) in the first year under the tournament’s new name. The event’s namesake was a Berlin High School sports star and a college golfer. “Our goal was to make this the best collegiate golf tournament experience that these kids would ever see,” said tournament director Rob Josephson. “That was our goal. And the feedback we got from coaches, from spectators, from the players ... (The winning team said) they’ve never played in a tournament this good. So it makes us so, so happy, and to do it in Ryan’s memory and honor.” The tournament provided

ington native and CSGA employee Brent Paladino as well as Dan and Theresa Lee, Ryan’s parents. “It’s a labor of love for all of us, and I’m speaking for unbelievable volunteers,” Josephson said. Yet the weekend wasn’t without its setbacks, all of which were out of the control of the tournament committee. Aside from scattered showers throughout the event, there was an unexpected visitor during Saturday’s play that put yet another unanticipated pause in the proceedings. “We all had our radios to stay in touch with each other, and towards the end of Day 1’s round, an official called and said, ‘There’s a black bear on the 14th fairway.’ So the head pro, Howie Friday, had said this had just happened last week, as well,” said Josephson of the tourney’s 300-plus pound predicament. “He was just looking for food and eating the branches, and they drove a cart out and he kind of wandered away. Thankfully, it was just a fun sighting.” Bryant led the field of play after Day 1 with a team score of 287 with URI and Fordham University tied for second at 292. Central Connecticut State University, the tournament’s host school, finished the weekend with a 297-289586 that allowed the Blue See Tournament / Page 16

Football The Redcoats rocked the Rams on Friday, Sept. 18 with an impressive 47-0 victory over host Rockville. The win helped Berlin improve to 2-0 on the year. Junior Mitch Maslowski and senior Ryan Cop led the way for Berlin, as both were key contributors on both sides of the ball. Maslowski pulled down three receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown. On defense, he recorded 12 tackles (two sacks) and a pass deflection. Cop scooped up a fumble recovery and hurtled 26 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, then added an eight-yard receiving touchdown in the second. Junior quarterback Jack Lynch also had a strong game, completing 8-of-9 passes for 160 yards and two touchdown passes. Sophomore Jensen Cartagena had a strong game defensively, as he recorded seven tackles and an inter-
ception. Seniors Alex Fleeton (five tackles) and Nick Perrone (four tackles, one interception) also made their mark on defense. The Coats got off to a hot start when freshman Tahje Yopp returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, opening up the floodgates to a 20-0 lead after one quarter of play. The team extended the lead to 41-0 at the half. Senior Deontae Spence closed out the scoring with a six-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Senior Owen Taylor and junior Jack Hamel also scored rushing touchdowns throughout the contest. The Redcoats will look to keep their winning ways going when they travel to East Catholic on Friday, Sept. 25 to face the Eagles (2-0).

While the tournament already rivals the best in the state for collegiate competitions, Josephson says there is plenty of room to grow. “We set the bar real high and already Dan Lee and I are talking about how can we make this better, and we will find ways. We will find little details to work on,” Josephson said. “Last year, our winning team was Boston College. This year, it was University of Rhode Island. Next year, we hope to attract the other Connecticut schools and even far reaching into the Carolinas and Florida. “Once we can get the word out about what a great tournament experience this is, I think you’ll see some wellknown national powers here.”
