Such incidents have called half, police officers across America have been under the into question what law enscrutiny of a national micro- forcement is doing to keep The Berlin Citizen

Bark for Life returns Oct. 17 By Sam Dostaler Special to The Citizen

The 67th Berlin Fair returns to the Berlin Lions Fairgrounds Oct. 2 to 4. See inside for a guide. Along with food, games, rides, animals and exhibits, the fair, once again, features great live music. This year’s most-talked about act is former American Idol participant Casey James, pictured.

The 3rd Annual Bark for Life, a benefit for the American Cancer Society, is back and will take place Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Berlin Lions Fairgrounds from noon to 3 p.m. Last year the Berlin event raised $8,400 and welcomed more than 160 dogs and their owners. “Everything is about the canine and their owners that day,” said Lynn Kipphut, of the American Cancer Society. Berlin’s Bark for Life is put on by Dirty Dog, a local pet wash and “pawstry shop.” The day includes demonstrations, contests and games. Some of the traditional favorites include a costume contest, and the awards handed out for smallest and largest dog and furthest distance traveled to attend. A number of vendors will be on site as well, and part of the day’s festivities will include a demonstration by the Kensington Fire Department. See Bark / Page 4

outside of A.S. Labieniec on Farmington Avenue. Although the signs haven’t been up for long, O’Brien said he has heard from both residents and police officers, who like them. “I’ve gotten so much feedback from the Berlin police. I’m not sure how they found out, but they say that they really appreciate it,” O’Brien said. “I haven’t heard anything negative about it.” The Support Your Police message is not only appreciated by those who wear the blue, but also by those who once did. “I don’t think I could pass the test to become a police officer today. It takes us three or four months to get somebody even certified to be offered the job,” said former police officer and current police commissioner Bob Peters. “Back in those days

you’d apply for the job and then they call you up and ask if you wanted to be a policeman. You go down, get sworn in and that was that. The changes are tremendous.” The positive response for the two signs has O’Brien and Tonina pondering expanding their reach. While O’Brien noted that there may not be an increase in the number of signs due to the out of pocket expense, he does plan on moving one to the Berlin Lions Fairgrounds in time for the Berlin Fair. “Leaving the Berlin Fair, there’s only one exit to get out,” he said. “So we’re looking to put one at the exit so people will see it right away.” O’Brien hopes that the signs, coupled with word of mouth, will help propel the grassroots movement beyond

The police department. So it got to the point where I just got fed up and I said ‘We’ve got to start supporting the police.’” O’Brien and his partner in the effort, Terry Tonina, decided now was the time to act, and have done so in a peaceful yet provocative way. The residents invested in two four-foot by eight-foot signs which read, “Support Your Police” in large print. At the bottom, the words “Paid for by John O’Brien & Terry Tonina” can be found, which is meant to remove speculation that the movement is politically-driven. “It’s not a political thing. I know the election season is coming up, but it’s not a Democratic or a Republican thing,” O’Brien said. One of the signs is located outside the Mobil gas station on High Road, the other

Support the Democrats To the editor: On Nov. 3, Berlin voters will choose whether they want Republicans or Democrats to hold the majority on the Town Council for the next two years. It is clear that the Democratic candidates are the most qualified to lead our town. They will listen to your concerns and work to solve your problems. They will make responsible decisions concerning both the town and school district budgets. Don’t forget that when the Republicans held the majority more than a decade ago our town quickly fell into disrepair as funding for road repairs, school building maintenance and other items were shortchanged. To the editor: On Nov. 3 the citizens of Berlin will be better served if we elect the five Democratic Town Council candidates. Rachel Rochette, Bill Rasmussen, Peter Rosso, Kristin Campanelli and JoAnne Angelico-Stetson will provide Berlin with a balanced budget, which will continue our high quality education programs and other vital town services. They are committed to seeking economic development and growing our tax base. Don’t be misled by the GOP vitriolic rhetoric. Berlin today is indeed a much better place to work and raise our families than it was when the Republicans briefly had the majority. Stephen J. Anderson East Berlin

Welcome from the

Mayor

Congratulations to the Lion’s Club on your 67th Berlin Fair!

As September wound down, the citizens of Berlin and Connecticut were winding up for the 67th annual Berlin Fair. As always, the first weekend in October will be filled with food and fun as the Berlin Lions Club host the best fair in Connecticut. It is an honor to be the mayor of Berlin during this weekend. Each year, the Lions Club organizes a weekend which showcases the best of our town and its people. They not only allow our churches, firefighters, and civic organizations an opportunity to raise money for their cause, they bring together the community through exhibits, concerts, rides, games, pulls and special events such as this year’s rodeo and special 9/11 memorial traveling museum. Kids will sure to be up early on Friday to get to the fairgrounds as soon as the gates open. They want to make sure they get as much use out of their ride wristband as possible. Children and adults alike will be anxious to get into the barns to see how their baked good, craft, picture, collection, vegetable or animal placed in the judging. Parents have already mapped out their route for the day to make sure they hit their favorite food booths. We are extremely lucky as a community to have an organization that is willing to put in the time, planning and work necessary to put something like this together. The Berlin Lions Club works tirelessly throughout the year to ensure each year is better than the next. I personally thank each and every individual who donates their time, money or resources for this weekend. So whether it is at your favorite food booth, the animal barn or waiting in line for a ride, I look forward to seeing you all at the Berlin Fair!

evening. This improved turnout a bit, Bienkowski said. “Today was a repeat of Friday,” Bienkowski said Sunday, Oct. 5. “I think everyone is having a great time.” Boy Scout Troop 41 leader Michael Paul said that their steamed cheeseburger booth did “excellent, very good on Friday but horrible on Saturday,” and that they were nearing selling out of their stock, with only 150 burgers remaining in the early afternoon out of the 1,000 originally purchased. Berlin Fire Department firefighter Dave Pethigal said that sales of the department’s specialty – freedom fries – were about average. UpBeat Volunteers at the Berlin Lions Memorial Pool Food Court said that they were “very busy, lots of customers.” UpBeat students Max Wade, Vinny Biscoglio, and Connor Ladd have been volunteering at the both for three years. “It’s fun, I like helping out and it’s good for the club,” Wade said. – Charles Kreutzkamp DISCS, DUSTY AND NERVELESS NOCKS Entertainment at this year’s Berlin Fair drew large crowds excited to see the Painted Pony Rodeo with the wisecracking rodeo clown Dusty, the champion Frisbee dogs of Disc-Connected K-9’s, and the aerial stunt show of the Nerveless Nocks. “It was awesome,” said Dan Koppel, talking about the Nerveless Nocks’ show. Koppel’s 9-year-old son Deron said the most impressive trick to him was the sway poles, “because they were just hanging by their toes, and then they flew down and stopped right before they crashed.” “It was very good. The poles were the most impressive –

A highlight of this year’s Berlin Fair will be the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit that presents a close-up look at one of the most devastating events in American history. The exhibit is in honor of one of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack, Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter. The exhibit, which has crossed the country on an 80-foot long vehicle, made

its debut on Sept. 11, 2013 in North Carolina and will make its first appearance in Connecticut on Oct. 2 at the Berlin Fair. The exhibit is hosted by New York City firefighters who were at the scene at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. “You can talk to survivors to find out what it was really like,” said John Hodge, chief operating officer of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers foundation, which prepared the exhibit.

that got me actually nervous,” David Brink said, referring to the moment when the Nocks descended from the tall steel poles headfirst and stopped short just in time. The sway poles is the Nocks’ signature stunt, developed more than 100 years ago when the family were circus performers and climbing poles was a task involved in setting up enormous circus tents. Michaelangelo Nock said that the fair had a great crowd this year. Nock said it was great to come to a “good old county fair,” as he greeted fans after the show. – Charles Kreutzkamp

ANIMALS REMAIN AN IMPORTANT PART OF FAIR The agricultural roots of the Berlin Fair still show with the cows, chickens, rabbits, and sheep who compete for best in their breed and best in show. This year, first time entrant Tara Eggleton took home best in show for the rabbit she raised. Kathy Thomas, who volunteered at the rabbit pavilion, explained that rabbits are entered in two categories: pets and American Rabbit Breeders’ Association rabbits. Entrants are judged on the standard for each breed. Judges look at how well kept the rabbit is, friendliness, the quality of the coat, nails, and other characteristics. Eggleton, 18, said that she started being interested in raising rabbits four years ago. “I like being able to try to achieve the top,” Eggleton said. Rabbits shared space with chickens, which were judged for the condition of their feet, beaks, feathers, the waddle, and the “saddle” – the feathers coming off of the chicken’s back. The roosters’ combs are also inspected carefully, volunteer Tom Campanelli explained.

who did not shirk their duty but went well above and beyond it,” Hodge said in an interview in August. Siller, a man in his 30s with five children, lived in Staten Island and served in Brooklyn. He was off duty on 9/11 but heard what was happening and raced to the fire house in his pickup truck. He sped to the scene in lower Manhattan and where the road was blocked he abandoned his truck in the middle of the highway, put on his gear and ran through the tunnel to the World Trade Center, where he hooked up with his squad. They would all perish. “Kids need to know the real heroes who participated in the largest mass evacuation in the history of the world,” Hodge said. While some 25,000 people got out of building safely, Siller was one of 2,606 victims at the World Trade Center. The exhibit at the fair is free to visitors. Its goal is to provide an enlightening experience that will help fairgoers to never forget. “Whatever happens in your life, it will still be affected by what happened on 9/11,” Hodge said.

New this year is an area where small children can pretend they are working on a farm, planting vegetables, gathering eggs, and helping with chores as many children would have done years ago in this agricultural town. Others can learn more about Berlin’s geology from the Ice Age to our first English settlement. The information will have you eagerly looking for drumlins, eskers and deltaic deposits left in Berlin by retreating glaciers. Another area of interest is the photo gallery. It was our most popular exhibit last year, and we are eager to share more photos from the archives. The theme will be “Berlin’s Ups and Downs.” We’ll have pictures of celebrations as well as floods, fires and food poisonings – but not to worry, truly tragic events won’t be revisited. Our talented artist members have been working for months on a life size 1880s kitchen scene illustrating how our great grandparents prepared farm to table meals. Other new displays highlight Berlin tinware – for which Berlin is famous. The industry started here in the 1740s and led to a new marketing and distribution system making the shiny pots, cups, plates, document boxes, candle sticks and gadgets available throughout the colonies. The men peddling these wares by horse drawn wagons became known as “Yankee

Peddlers.” The Yankee Peddler became our town symbol and as one little boy noted when hearing this story, “He is the guy on our trash and recycling cans!” Yes, and he is known throughout the country as representing New England ingenuity.

Are you one of the few Berlinites yet to find your way to the Historical Society’s Museum Barn at the Berlin Fair? Look for the yellow and red Yankee Peddler wagon parked outside the barn next to the south “vendor” gate. You will not be disappointed. For three days in October the barn comes to life with new displays designed to expose visitors to local history and appeal to our sense of nostalgia in creative ways. Central to the museum is a continual viewing of our new video celebrating Barns of Berlin. Hay bales provide theater seating and the perfect place to reminisce with old friends.

Senior Little League splits set Berlin 6, Silver City 1: Adam Bilinsky was strong at the plate and on the mound in carrying the Berlin senior team to a 6-1 victory over Silver City on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Percival Field. Bilinsky struck out 10 hitters en route to the Berlin victory. Berlin’s offense came alive, generating 10 hits to power its way past Silver City. Berlin scored two runs in the second with a base hit by Matt Lewis, a triple by Bilinsky and a base hit by Joe Gaffney. Berlin scored two more runs in the fourth with a bases loaded single by Gaff-

ney, followed by a base hit by Dillon Roy. Berlin capped off its scoring in the sixth behind base hits from Joshua Wood, Jeremy Wood, Bilinsky and Gaffney. Gaffney finished the day 3-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs. Also with a hit in the game was Derek Desmarais. Edgewood White 5, Berlin 2: Matt Lewis did his best to change the outcome of a tightly contested game between the Berlin Senior Team and Edgewood White, as Berlin ended up on the losing end of a 5-2 game on Sunday, Sept. 20. Lewis was a workhorse on the mound for Ber-

lin, pitching a complete game. Lewis allowed two earned runs, six hits and two walks while striking out three over seven innings of work. The top of the second inning saw Edgewood take a 2-0 lead. Berlin came right back in the bottom of the inning with runs scored by Adam Bilinsky and Joe Gaffney. Berlin came close to taking the lead in the same frame, but a hard hit ground ball by Noah Reed with the bases loaded was turned into an inning-ending double play. Edgewood took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth. Berlin almost tied the game again in

the bottom of the inning with a very close play at the plate, where Joshua Wood was tagged out trying to score to end the inning. Edgewood scored again in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 5-2 and Berlin could not answer as they went down in order to end the game. Berlin played great defense and they were aggressive on the bases which kept the game close. Unfortunately, the offense came up short with only one hit – from Wood – on the day. —Submitted by Roger DelGiorno
