Sage Park car show draws hundreds By Charles Kreutzkamp
People were lining up out of the door in extreme heat around 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15 during “Clear the Shelters Day” at the Berlin Animal Control facility at 600 Christian Lane. Around a dozen animals were adopted by the mid-afternoon, including three dogs and at least nine cats. “It was a really good turnout,” said Animal Control Officer Jan Lund. Lund said it is always a great day when an animal is given a new

Hundreds came to the Touch a Truck and Car Show at Sage Park Saturday, Aug. 15 despite the blazing heat of one of the hottest weekends this summer. “Turnout is great, especially since it’s 100 degrees out here,” Fire Chief Jim Simons said. Early in the day, volunteers were parking cars on fields, and throughout the day the tractors hitched to ‘people movers’ ferried full cartloads back and forth between festivities and parking. Simons said that the idea to rear-

Sept. 8 deadline for petitioning BOE candidates “The Board of Education works very hard at educating new members so that they can contribute to the school improvement process,” Board of Education president Gary Brochu said in a statement. “As we get closer to the election we will provide a number of orientation opportunities
for candidates so that they can become more familiar with our schools and what it is like to serve on the board.” Brochu said in a statement that “Being a non-partisan board,” the BOE simply seeks “intelligent individuals who are committed to working to improve our schools … We
think that they will find, as we have, that it’s a great and challenging way to serve your community.” A Board of Education press release states, “Potential candidates need only to go to the Town Clerk’s office to receive a petition form, collect the signatures of 127 Berlin vot-
ers, and return the completed petition to the Town Clerk by Sept. 8.” Brochu said in a statement that candidates are welcome to contact current board members for more information about what service to the board entails. — Charles Kreutzkamp

Shelters “It’s wonderful and it’s needed,” Berardozzi said. “And it’s wonderful for all the rescue groups and shelters to work together.” A few miles south, the Middletown-based animal rescue group and shelter Cat Tales had similar success at Petco at 816 Washington St. in Middletown. The group also appeared at another Petco location at 760 Queen St., Southington. “This was a great day,” said Cat Tales volunteer and media coordinator Paul Muir. Although the organization does not do same-day adoptions, Cat Tales likely found homes for at least three cats
and three kittens, and referred many more visitors to their website. “Those are some great numbers for us,” Muir said. Cat Tales is a private animal shelter located in a private residence, run with help from some 60 volunteers, many of whom provide foster homes for cats. The shelter works closely with animal control in Middletown and also takes on a trap, neuter, and release initiative to control the feral cat population. Muir said Cat Tales is grateful for all the work NBC put into organizing and promoting “Clear the Shelters Day.”

Club is seeking donations until Saturday, Aug. 22 of basic school supplies, such as backpacks, notebooks, crayons, scissors, pencils, pens, glue, rulers, markers, folders, and erasers, with three drop off locations in Berlin: Good Cause Gifts, 384 Main St., Webster Bank, 40 Webster Square Road, and Liberty Bank, 1169 Farmington Ave. Faucher said it was the first year for this initiative, but the club hopes to make it an annual drive. Unlike similar donation drives, items would go to students and families within “the same community you live in,” Faucher said. So far, the drive has had a very positive reaction from passers-by at Good Cause Gifts, Faucher said, but the project needs more publicity. “We are hopeful the town will help support” the initiative as it gains steam. The donated items will be passed to the town’s social services department, where they will be distributed, keeping the identities of the young people and families confidential. Good Cause Gifts is a social enterprise that sells clothing, fine gifts, and unique artisan items to support the mission of providing jobs and job training for individuals with disabilities with the goal of helping them find long-term employment.

added that many students have to compete for time on the computer with siblings, which becomes increasingly difficult as more and more schoolwork moves to technology aided learning. One of the features Bradley is excited about is the shared documents functionality of Google Docs. The technology makes peer collaboration easier than ever. Multiple students can collaborate on a document together, with each able to type into the document and make changes simultaneously. For grading, a student can simply share a copy of the document with their instructor. “We don’t have to deal with the cumbersomeness of exchanging papers,” Bradley said, and getting comfortable with technology “will help prepare them for high school and college.” Bradley says that allowing student to keep the computers makes sense, as after three years “the technology evolves anyway.”
Saint Paul School spokesman Ellen Bertolami said the computers will feature a suite of educational software, and Internet filtering “to ensure our students have safe access to the Internet.” She said the school also recently upgraded its network “to allow for the increased volume and dramatically improve speed.” In a press release, Bertolami said “The Chromebook initiative demonstrates the school’s commitment to ensuring that the curriculum and instructional tools remain current and relevant to twenty-first century learners. For students seeking a faithbased alternative to public school, Saint Paul strives to be their ‘school of choice,’ providing an exceptional educational and spiritual experience.” Saint Paul is a Catholic school that has served students in Berlin and the surrounding towns since 1958. The school provides faithbased education and is open to students of all faiths from pre-school through grade 8.

at Wilcox Regional Technical School, also in Meriden. According to executive director Hubert Godin, some 50 students are enrolled in the program. In April, the program was on the chopping block, as the college considered closing its Meriden campus, but students, educators, and lawmakers vigorously protested the closing and the decision was reversed. Meriden state Sen. Dante Bartolomeo authored a bill to stop the closure of the public college campus and praised the survival of the manufacturing program. “Dozens of Middlesex Community College students have benefited from the school’s manufacturing program and I am thrilled to see this program be offered

Baldwin said that “one of the most exciting changes” is QPI’s support of product development and innovation. “Since the acquisition, QPI has invested significant funds into various research and development projects, in order to help FENN stay competitive in today’s global market,” Baldwin said. “FENN is committed to meeting the market’s demands and the needs of their clientele, whether it be additional product features, new product offerings or ancillary services that add value.” FENN has provided custom metal forming machinery for over a century across a range of industries. Local manufacturer FENN LLC is celebrating a milestone few businesses achieve: its 115th year of operation. The company is hosting an open house event Thursday, Sept. 17 to celebrate the milestone and commemorate the company’s first year since being acquired by the Columbus, Ohio headquartered Quality Products Incorporated. After a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. FENN will host machine demonstrations, facility tours, technical discussions, and more from 2 to 7 p.m. “Many people are not aware of just how alive and well manufacturing is here in Connecticut,” FENN marketing assistant Emily Baldwin told The Citizen. Although many jobs in the industry have been outsourced, “there has been a re-shoring trend in recent years,” Baldwin said, thanks in part to customers who seek to buy American-made products. “We have also found that customers who have tried inexpensive options now realize they prefer the quality, expertise and value that comes from buying a machine at FENN,” an American manufacturer, Baldwin said. Baldwin said that because of the growth in the manufacturing sector, there is a need for more workers with the skills companies need. “Those opportunities in-
to students from Meriden and the surrounding communities,” Bartolomeo said in a statement. Baldwin said that FENN’s open house “represents a great opportunity for individuals within the metal forming industry to network and understand how our products are customized to meet the needs of niche business opportunities in markets including renewable energy, materials research, aerospace, medical, agriculture, automotive, and superconducting, among others.” The open house will feature food and beverages as well as raffle prizes “targeted toward FENN clientele” to be offered hourly, according to a press release, which adds, “Machinery on display will include a custom made rolling mill, a CNC spring coiler, swagers, a table top drawbench, and both pull through style and power driven turks heads.” The technical discussion topics will include the pre-

Opinion Aresimowicz elected to executive committee At the recent National Conference of State Legislatures’ 2015 Legislative Summit in Seattle, lawmakers from around the country elected House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D-Berlin/Southington) to serve on the 2015-2016 NCSL Executive Committee. The NCSL Executive Committee is the governing body of the National Conference of State Legislatures. Comprised of 63 elected members,
the Executive Committee drives the organization by supervising and controlling the affairs of the Conference, its committees, and publications, as well as deciding the organization’s ultimate positions on matters of public policy. The Executive Committee meets four times a year to oversee the development and implementation of NCSL policies. Aresimowicz has been an active
member of the National Conference of State Legislatures throughout his tenure as a state legislator and the organization has benefited from his expertise and pragmatism over the years. The National Conference of State Legislatures is the bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staff of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical as-
sistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system. Aresimowicz is serving his sixth term representing the 30th Assembly District of Berlin and Southington in the Connecticut General Assembly, where he is House Majority Leader. — Press Release
Letters to the Editor A note about coats To the editor: Here’s a different version on Ron Steurer’s letter on why the high school is nicknamed “Redcoats.” My late father coached football at BHS during the mid/late 1940s. He personally knew Albert “Hunk” Anderson, who coached BHS from 1938-1943. He once asked Hunk why
they were called “Redcoats.” Hunk said they were playing a game at Percival Field in either 1940 or ’41 against Canton and it was raining so hard the ball was floating away. Hunk, who was painting his house that week, went to his car during halftime and came back with a bunch of “red” tarps to cover them, and told the team “you’re now Redcoats.”
Hope this version is politically correct. Art Kevorkian Berlin

State Briefs AG proposes sale of historic Amistad schooner NEW LONDON — Connecticut’s attorney general has proposed selling the replica of a historic slave ship to a nonprofit in order to pay its $2.2 million debt. The Amistad, the state’s flagship for nearly 15 years, has been docked in New London since April. A judge Wednesday, Aug. 12 approved the cancellation of a trip to
New Haven this fall and authorized the ship’s receiver to spend up to $4,000 for repairs. Attorney General George Jepsen proposed selling the state-subsidized ship for $315,000 to Discovering Amistad Inc. in the hopes that it will preserve its educational mission. Connecticut requires infertility coverage for older patients HARTFORD — The high cost of infertility treatments for some people over 40 in Connecticut may soon covered by their insurance company. The Department of Insurance has determined a 2006 state law mandating coverage for medically appropriate fertility treatments for men and women is discriminatory because it sets an age limit of 40.
Insurers were notified last week that age limits must be removed for policies sold or renewed on or after Jan. 1, 2016. Insurance Commissioner Katharine Wade said there was medical evidence to support the age limit when the law was first passed. But she said new technologies and procedures have since been proven clinically to help people conceive a child. The Connecticut Association of Health Plans supports the change. Berlin has a brand new destination for lovers of arts, crafts, scrapbooking, and painting. Trish Gibson said she “stepped into the abyss” and quit her job to bring her passion for arts and crafts to others through Scraptivity at 600 Christian Lane, in the Kensington Market plaza. The business celebrated its ribbon cutting Wednesday, Aug. 12. The donation-based business is all about recycling materials and creating art, striving to keep things out of the trash and transform unlikely objects into beautiful art pieces. Scraptivity already has a wide variety of supplies. Supplies can be donated by businesses or the public. Scraptivity has already had many successful classes and craft nights, with offerings ranging from oil painting classes to jewelry making, still life drawing, and making fairy gardens. Scraptivity also offers studio time with tools and materials available, as well as birthday parties, Pinterest parties, and other events. “I have always been interested in arts and crafts, a master of not-so-much, but I like to dabble,” Gibson told The Citizen. When she found a website for a crafting store in Portland, she was really excited to go until she realized

Sports Ryan T. Lee Classic marks fifth year By Nate Brown
The Berlin Citizen
The Ryan T. Lee Memorial Foundation celebrated its fifth annual Ryan T. Lee Golf Classic at Timberlin Golf Course on Friday, Aug. 14. Golfers of all talent levels came out in droves to support the event and the foundation, which has worked diligently since its inception to spread the good will of a young man who left the world far too soon. “The Classic is just a great thing,” said Jim McNair, a board member of the foundation. “It’s a ton of people who care about Ryan, and about making the world a better place.” Since its inception in 2011, the foundation has made its impact on the community by volunteering its time and do-
nating money to various organizations to help improve and better the lives of others. The organization has done so in the hopes of mirroring the lifestyle of the young man it’s named after, Ryan Lee – who passed away tragically during his sophomore year of college after being struck by a vehicle while attending Long Island University. Since its humble beginnings, both the foundation and the Classic have grown in size and impact. Friday’s crowd at Timberlin featured 244 golfers throughout the morning and afternoon shotgun starts, and plenty more at the evening’s celebratory dinner and auction, which was held at the Aqua Turf in Southington. “I’ve played in it probably four times,” said Kevin Kwasnik, who grew up playing

Golf erything was just first class. It was a first class event and we’re very, very impressed,” said Mattera, who attended the Classic for the second year in a row. “Everybody wants to come back and do it again. It’s a great cause and a great time.” The event helped to conclude the Foundation’s Memorial Week, which was also celebrated with a miniature golf outing at Putters Paradise on Saturday, Aug. 8 and a basketball camp at the New Britain Boys & Girls Club on Tuesday, Aug. 11. The basketball camp welcomed 50 children from New Britain to a day full of basketball drills and events before providing them backpacks with school supplies for the new academic year. The foundation goes beyond one week during the summer months, however. The program has supported schools in Berlin, New Britain and Cheshire, youth sports programs around town, hospitals and churches. The foundation also provides scholarships for Berlin High graduates. Three members of the Class of 2015, Julia Kemmling, Ashley D’At-
tilio and Robert Veneziano were all honored during the Classic’s dinner as recipients of Ryan T. Lee Memorial Scholarships. The dinner also included both a live and silent auction, with featured items such as Counting Crows concert tickets, Boston Red Sox tickets, golf bags and clubs, Kuerig coffee machines, and a hockey puck signed by Ryan Spooner of the Boston Bruins. Despite the Foundation’s Memorial Week coming to a close, spreading the joy of Lee’s life is far from over for the calendar year. In September, the Central Connecticut State University golf team will host the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate Tournament. Known in years past as the CCSU Fall Invitational, next month’s event marks the inaugural tournament under the new name. “Ryan meant so much to both me and my son, but he was also a collegiate golfer at LIU, so it means so much to honor him this way,” said Rob Josephson, who hosts the invitational and also serves as a board member of the RTL Foundation. “We’re very excited to have this tournament named after him.”

Petit, politicians react to ruling on death penalty By Jesse Buchanan Special to The Citizen
CHESHIRE — When the state legislature repealed the death penalty in 2012, it voted on a bill that allowed the execution of those already on death row. The Connecticut Supreme Court’s Thursday, Aug. 12 decision declaring the death penalty unconstitutional means those sentenced to die, including the two men convicted in the 2007 Cheshire home-invasion killings, will face imprisonment instead. “It takes the rug right out from under everything we tried to put in place,” said state Rep. Mary Fritz, D-Wallingford, a judiciary committee member and death penalty supporter. Opponents of state execu-

tion say rules on the death penalty should be universally applied. “When you work on a bill, you might have a recent horrific case in mind, but it has to apply in every case,” said state Rep. Mary Mushinsky, D-Wallingford. She voted in favor of repeal in 2012. The ruling affects 11 men on death row and stems from an appeal from Eduardo Santiago, whose attorneys had argued that any execution carried out after repeal would constitute cruel and unusual punishment. Santiago was convicted of a 2000 murder-for-hire killing in West Hartford. The court agreed with his position in a 4-3 ruling. Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky were both sentenced to death after the 2007 home invasion that took the lives of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters, 17-year-old Hayley Petit and 11-year-old Michaela Petit. State Rep. Al Adinolfi,
R-Cheshire, was a staunch death penalty supporter during the 2012 debate over the repeal bill. He hopes the legislature will reexamine the issue. “I’m very disappointed,” Adinolfi said. “It got me going.” Adinolfi and U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, D-5th District, faced each other multiple times in races for the 103rd District state seat. Esty, a Cheshire resident, opposes the death penalty and supported the Aug. 12 court decision. “I commend the Connecticut Supreme Court’s decision to abolish the death penalty once and for all,” she said. “I believe the harshest penalty is life imprisonment with no possibility of parole.” The court majority found that the death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment and that it no longer “comports with contemporary standards of decency.” The dissenting minority argued that the legislature was

disappointment.” “The crimes committed by the men on death row have shaken Cheshire and other communities around Connecticut,” Bartolomeo said in a statement, noting she was not a member of the legislature when the death penalty was repealed but would not have supported it. “These 11 men had been given the death penalty, a sentence they deserved, and it should not have been overturned.” State. Rep. Emil “Buddy” Altobello, D-Meriden, voted against repeal under former governor M. Jodi Rell. She vetoed attempts to abolish state executions. Altobello supported the abolition of the death penalty in 2012 “largely because we really don’t have an efficient way to carry out the death penalty,” he said. “We really don’t have an effective death penalty. The only person we’ve executed volunteered,” Altobello said. Connecticut has had just one execution since 1960. Serial killer Michael Ross was put to death in 2005 after winning a legal fight to end his appeals.

the best arbiter of current views on capital punishment. William Petit Jr., the only survivor of the Cheshire home invasion, has supported the death penalty. “The dissenting justices clearly state how the four members of the majority have disregarded keystones of our governmental structure such as the separation of powers and the role of judicial precedent to reach the decision they hand down today,” he said in a statement. The state legislature approved the death penalty repeal in a mostly party-line vote, with Democrats supporting repeal and Republicans opposing it. Democratic legislators supporting the bill said it would likely withstand appeal, citing a similar situation in New Mexico after that state abolished the death penalty. “The people writing the bill thought they’d covered that eventuality. It looks like the court thought otherwise,” Mushinsky said. State Sen. Dante Bartolomeo, D - Me r i d e n , wh o s e d i strict includes Cheshire, said the decision is a “profound

Dr. William Petit (upper left) was joined by friends of the Petit family and state legislators for an Aug. 5 ceremony in which Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed into law a bill establishing Michaela Petit’s Four O’Clock as the official children’s state flower. The new law honoring the 11-year-old Cheshire home invasion victim paves the way for Connecticut residents to understand Michaela’s legacy and her love of helping others. The Four O’Clock was the flower Michaela used to plant with her father. After the 2007 tragedy, the Four O’Clock poked its petals out of the burned-down home’s remains. The Petit Family Foundation sells Four O’Clock seeds to fund a scholarship for girls.

home cooked meals. 1. If you don’t usually cook, start gradually. Make it a goal to cook once a week and work up to cooking more often. 2. Be more efficient and make better food choices by planning ahead. Use a meal planner and prepare an organized grocery list every week. Be sure to always have healthy staples on hand, such as brown rice, frozen vegetables and frozen seafood. 3. Go grocery shopping once a week and don’t forget
to take along your grocery list. This is less stressful and time-consuming than attempting to navigate through the grocery aisles and then wait on the checkout line night after night on your way home from work. And you will never again have to stare into your fridge wondering, “What’s for dinner?” or resort to fast food take-out. 4. Prep meals the night before or in the morning. Cutting up veggies for the salad or side dish can help save time after work. Also try cooking a big meal on

Every one of our windows and patio doors must live up to their 112-year-old standard to be the best. We won’t let you make the vinyl window mistake. Our exclusive Fibrex® composite material is twice as strong as vinyl, and unlike low-end vinyl, our windows are structurally and aesthetically designed to fit your home. We literally handpick every installer. No matter how good your window is, if it’s not installed properly, it will fail. Each of our teams have installed thousands of windows and often leave homes cleaner than when they arrived.
