Children create stop-motion movies By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Starting with a worm wiggling across a screen, a dozen children recently learned how to create their own stop-motion movies telling tales like a pirate ship crossing the desert. “I just enjoy being able to put Legos together in a cool way,” said Mya Lamoureux, 10, who made her movie about two mariners trying to keep their rowboat from filling with water. “I also enjoy being able to use the Legos to make a movie to show people.”

To make their movies, the children carefully moved the Legos, taking photos of each tiny change. “Now this part is going to be tricky,” said Griswold Elementary School Library Media Specialist Danielle Salina, who teaches the class at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library. She showed the children how to stack and unstack the blocks so it appeared they were moving on their own. “Look at this, you guys don’t even need me,” she said. Ian Franczak, 13, works on his stop-motion movie at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library. Devin Leith-Yessian, The Citizen

Letters to the Editor Ridiculous rhetoric To the editor: In a recent edition of The Citizen, a letter was written about supposed issues with the Berlin public school system. As a Berlin High School graduate, class of 2016, I know that the education I received was, to say the least, above average of what's really required of the town and of the state. Many people in my class are going on to become very productive members of society; doctors, nurses, lawyers and engineers, to name a few. The absolutely ridiculous rhetoric that gets spewed about the public school system is quite disappointing. I understand there's a lot of money that has to go into the school system. But don't look at this as a negative thing. Look at it as an investment for the future of our town our state and our country. The council majority says that they support our schools, but then makes budget cuts to them. Actions speak louder than words.

More to the point, I don't believe that the majority members should be talking out of both sides of their mouth, believing one thing privately yet preaching another publicly.

The clear choice is Markley To the editor: I have strong misgivings about New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart mounting a primary challenge against state Sen. Joe Markley, the Republican Party’s endorsed candidate for lieutenant governor. In 2016, I was the Republican nominee for state senate, seeking to represent Berlin, New Britain and Farmington. I looked forward to Mayor Stewart’s support in New Britain as I faced a tough, uphill battle. Despite my requests for help, none was forthcoming. Instead, Mayor Stewart worked actively for Sharon Beloin-Saavedra, a Democrat, who mounted a prima-

election). As an active participant in the BRTC’s efforts to elect Republicans in 2017, I can categorically attest to the fact that we never, ever, campaigned on a promise of zero tax increases. The promise was to keep tax increases as low as possible and strive to make government more efficient and streamlined. I guess that doesn’t suit your argument, Sam.

Berlin Lions getting ready for 70th annual fair It’s crunch time for the Berlin Lions and all those volunteering to help them prepare for the 70th Berlin Fair, which is less than two months away. Fair President John Geratne said they’re ahead of schedule in getting vendors booked — as of July 23 they were already at 60 percent capacity. Having worked in the sausage booth for years, he said many of the groups from across the town and region enjoy coming back to the fair for the community created behind the scenes, as civic groups work together to serve the food the fair is renowned for. “For a lot of people it’s a reunion,” he said. Like last year, the Lions Club is sticking with the earlier date, with the fair running from Sept. 14-16. Geratne said the change was made to avoid bad weather, which

put a damper on past fairs. While it was a bit humid last year, the sunny weather made for a more enjoyable experience. “The better the weather, the better the fair,” he said. There will also be a demolition derby and tractor pull held on Sept. 13 and a fireworks show, the date of which is undetermined, to celebrate the fair’s 70th anniversary. Geratne said the committee planning the fair has other ideas in mind for the occasion, but nothing is set in stone. Much of the pre-fair work entails getting all of the buildings into shape for September. The Lions have upgraded the kitchen pavilion and sausage booth, expanded the pull pit where the demolition derby is held, and repaired leaking roofs and old floors in some of the buildings. They also had some help from a Boy Scout See Fair, A14

EDITORIAL

Dems energized for midterms In non-presidential election years, Americans lose a bit of their zeal to make their voice heard at the polls. Historically, voter turnout in midterm elections reaches only about 40 percent, while turnout jumps to 50-60 percent when we select presidents. There are signs, however, that the 2018 midterm may generate presidential election-type numbers. And it looks like Democrats — fueled by their opposition to President Trump — are most eager to cast their ballots. According to a recent Washington Post-Schar School poll, 58 percent of Democrats and Democraticleaning independents say that it is “extremely” important to vote in November’s midterm elections, while just 38 percent of Republicanleaners feel the same. Meanwhile, a pair of polls (Quinnipiac University, Kaiser Family Foundation) released Wednesday found that respondents favor turning control of Congress over to Democrats by a 12-point margin. And in yet another troubling sign for the GOP, here in Connecticut, and throughout the country, Democrats

are out-pacing Republicans in voter registration.

ANYWHERE, ANYTIME

UNLIMITED NEWS & INFORMATION @ YOUR FINGERTIPS

Data from the Connecticut Secretary of State's office shows that from the 2016 election through June of this year, 81,908 new voters registered as Democrats in our state, compared to 43,390 who registered as Republicans. Clearly, the Democrats are energized. Gary Rose, head of the political science department at Sacred Heart University, said the rise in Democratic voters is an indication of "a Democratic Party fired up over Trump." Ron Schurin, a political science professor at the University of Connecticut, echoed that assessment. "People are more intensely politically involved in this off year," Schurin said, adding that the increased voter rolls are "clearly related to a reaction to Donald Trump." November is still a ways off, and the political winds can change in an instant, but right now it looks like a blue wave may be on the horizon. Vehicles are allowed to enter the Southington Drive-In grounds at 6 p.m. It was close to 7 when my crew got there, and the place was pretty well filled. We parked (hatch facing the screen, of course), put the back seats down, laid out blankets and pillows for the kids, and unpacked camping chairs for my wife and I.

It was quite a sight to see. Think football-game-tailgate-meets-kids-birthdayparty. There was plenty of food being shared, lots of laughter, youngsters in pajamas and barefeet scampering about. To add to the throwback feel of a night at the drive-in, golden oldies played from the speakers at the pavilion, where folks lined up to buy goodies.

Some time after 8, as the sun sunk behind the trees, the movie screen came to life. People tuned their radios to 89.9, pulled their loved ones (and snacks) close and settled in for the show. Just like in the old days. I suggest getting out to a Saturday night movie at the drive-in before the season wraps up in October. My family had a great time. From what I saw, it looked like everyone did. Nick Carroll is editor of the Record-Journal weeklies.
