Santa came to town, in a fire truck By Ashley Kus
Berlin AD to step down By Nick Carroll and Nate Brown

For the eighth year, Berlin got a special visit by the Santa Express. For nine days this month, Santa delivered presents in the decorated Kensington Fire Rescue truck, which was decked out in Christmas lights, paper snowflakes, and played Christmas music as it completed its stops. Of course, the Santa deliveries included a few elves and several helpers. “Throughout serving the community we see people in bad situations and now is the time we get to interact with the community and see kids happy,” Chief Mark D. Lewandowski said. Everyone in the department participated in the event, as it was one of its biggest fundrais-
Berlin High School director of athletics Dan Scavone has submitted his resignation and will leave his job at the end of the school year. Scavone, who has held the post since July 1, 2012, informed the school board of his decision recently. “I was conScavone templating this at the end of my last school year, several months ago,” said Scavone, who is in his 25th year in the public education sysOnce again, this year, Kensington Fire Rescue’s Santa Express completed its tem. “This job in athletic ad| Courtesy of Kensington Fire Rescue ministration has evolved into See Santa / Page A4 stops around Berlin. a difficult job from a stress standpoint. proceed. The representative said the next two months will be spent working on the best maintenance program and figuring out when work can begin. The lease agreement will go to a public hearing in January. The other two items in the agreement were approved with all councilors in favor, except for David Evans, who abstained. Also on the Town Council agenda was an annual update from Charles Brown, the director of the Central Connecticut Health District (CCHD), which serves the towns of Berlin, Rocky Hill, Newington and Wethersfield. Brown presented results of over $1 million in revenue for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. He also presented a five-year strategic plan to improve health care in the area, which included consolidating offices, and continuing flu clinics and preventative care. After Brown’s presentation, the council made a motion to approve and adopt the Resolution and Charter for Compassion. Berlin resident
Greta Stifel had attended previous meetings to convince the town to approve the charter, which has been adopted by other municipalities. She said, “I am attempting to bring a very positive program to the town of Berlin that will benefit everyone.” The town attorney answered several questions from the council regarding the matter before the final vote. Councilor Rachel Rochette voiced concerns about what people might do within the organization, and whether there could be a liability issue for the town. The attorney answered that the Charter for Compassion was more of a “symbolic gesture of community.” Councilor Evans also spoke out about whether there was any ambiguity in referring to the organization as a “charter.” After the discussion, Kaczynski concluded the item. “I’m not sure the town should endorse it right now,” the mayor said. The charter idea was shot down, 4-2.

High School, and AD/assistant principal at Woodland Regional High School, where he built the athletic program from the ground up. Before becoming an administrator, Scavone was a teacher of health and physical education in Farmington, Waterbury and Terryville. “I think a highlight (of my time in Berlin) has been coming to an athletic program that’s so well-respected and so successful in so many facets, and having the opportunity to observe and appreciate a lot of hard work by such great coaches and student-athletes,” Scavone said. “It’s been a pleasure to serve them in a manner that helps them to do their jobs optimally.”

stresses of the position can wear on a person, on top of the usual stresses, this past fall, Scavone found himself swept up in a CIAC investigation centered around the BHS football program. Ultimately, the CIAC determined that the BHS football team had competed with four ineligible players on its roster this season. Worse yet, it was determined that those players had been recruited from New Britain. Berlin’s CIAC punishment included the forfeiture of the team’s 2015 wins in which the ineligible players participated, and a one-year probation for the program. Meanwhile, longtime Redcoat coach John Capodice was relieved of his duties. “Was the football situation here a stressful situation for a lot of people? Absolutely. But it’s one of many, many, many stressful situations that come with this job. So that situa-
tion was not the reason for this decision at this time,” Scavone said. “Sure, it’s easy to speculate the timing, but the football situation was not the reason for this decision. The football situation is just one of many situations that an athletic director deals with. But the timing is coincidental.” Since his arrival at BHS three-plus ago, Scavone has had an input in the renovations at the school – something he’s proud to have taken part in, as Berlin’s athletic wing has seen plenty of improvements. Also, Scavone has served as the president of the Connecticut Association of Athletic Directors. His term as president will end at the close of the school year. Before coming to BHS, Scavone served as AD at Danbury High School. Prior to serving in that position, Scavone was the AD/dean of students at Nonnewaug High School, principal of his alma mater, Holy Cross

ers of the year. Lewandowski was involved with the Santa Express when it first started, back when the truck made a modest 33 stops and saw about 90 children. “It just kept getting bigger and bigger,” he said. This year, Santa made some 275 stops and delighted approximately 1,250 children. St. Nick delivered presents Monday through Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon until 8 p.m. The planning process for the event began in October, after the Berlin Fair, as the department spread the word about the Santa Express. Lewandowski recalled close to 100 people signing up on the first night of registration. And it took a workshop, or in this case, a whole department, to coordinate routes and plans with Santa for this month’s many deliveries. “We have a lot of help, and there are so many moving parts to it,” Lewandowski said. He credited Chairperson of the Santa Express committee, Amy Pajor, as a major piece of the behind-the-scenes effort. “A lot of families are making this a tradition,” Lewandowski said. In fact,

Local man serves up gourmet eats By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen
Homemade macaroni and cheese on a hot dog? It’s real and on the menu as the “Mac and Cheese Dog” at Riley’s Gourmet in New Britain. The restaurant, located at 61 Glen St., celebrated a year of business in October. What started out as a hot dog cart a few years ago has grown into a proper brick and mortar lunch spot. And it’s a popular destination. Owner Rick Charamut, a lifelong Berlin resident, encourages creativity from his customers.
building and the menu. Charamut and co-owner Deb Dalena, a Plainville resident, wanted the building to stand out and attract local customers. “We are starting to see a lot of new people from Plainville, Berlin, Southington; and there’s even a couple that drives all the way from Columbia,” he said. Charamut has ties to both Berlin and New Britain. His parents grew up in New Britain and moved to Berlin, where Charamut attended St. See Riley’s / Page A8

As an alum of Central Connecticut State University, Charamut is happy to accommodate students by offering 10 percent off weekdays from 2 to 5 p.m. He said he tries to support the community and his hometown as much as he can. “It’s a good way to stay local,” he said. The ingredients that make up Riley’s unique dishes all come from the area, and everything is fresh. Charamut said getting the food from
nearby was the best way to utilize his small space – no need for massive storage freezers. “You can really taste that it’s all made fresh,” he said. Most of the meat comes from Martin Rosol’s in New Britain, and the produce is from Hartford. Opinion The music and math connection By Tony Ryba Although tones, chords and rhythms of music easily appear as pieces of a mathematical system, math seems much less similarly describable as music. Students talk about learning printed music until they can play the notes and eventually feel the piece. Math students discuss working through problems with reliably mechanical steps; executing them leads to the right or wrong answer. Sets of problems can seem disparate and almost automated, much less related to each other and expressive than different pieces of music are to the music student. Theory supports joining these two fields of study, extending the benefits of listening, singing and playing an instrument beyond performance. Research connects music exposure and study to higher levels of mathematical ability and cultivation of scientific inquiry, an important aspect of mathematical modeling and problem solving. With all of these pieces in place, the time is right to move toward this connection that is largely unexplored in the public schools. Foundational ideas bring together content connections, multiple intelligences and the effects of musical creativity. Strong theoretical arguments and research remain viable connecting music and math based on cognition. With all of these pieces in place, the time is right to move toward this connection that is largely unexplored in the public
schools. Classroom integration of students’ multiple intelligences through the use of music has been shown to maintain the quantifiability of Common Core Standards in ways that have no negative effect on fundamental issues that are a part of music teaching. Reasonable comparisons are made between musical performance as participation in song and development of the ability to persevere in strategies of mathematical problem solving. While there is much attention paid to district standardized testing and its effect on rankings among comparable communities, much of it appears short sighted amid rapid changes to significant aspects of the tests. State level decisions and imposed mandates from leaders who do not live in our community or spend time in our classrooms leaves many frustrated. Frequently it seems that we have more questions about statewide assessments than there is time to answer before the next change. Sincere and valid attempts to stay current with instructional practice related to the testing focus and methods are unavoidably one step behind or more as administrators and teachers try their best to prepare students for success. Our school board is far more than aware of the negative effects of poor test scores. As in all districts, some of that trickles down through school administrators to classroom teachers. Unspoken fear of failure is not uncommon across the state even in very good schools, and with that comes
stunted creativity and reduced innovation in anything not in line with or directly measured by test scores of English, math or science. This is not to deny that taxpayers deserve mechanisms to indicate how well the schools are doing. We all know that as the leading recipient of tax revenue, our schools cost residents more than any other service provided. That not all resident households send students to the public schools is even more reason to provide a measuring stick. In response, there can arise a temptation to train test takers who can crank out good data to serve immediate purposes, but real intellectual growth occurs as thinkers develop. Test scores can validate student progress, teacher competence, school performance, and administrator effectiveness, but we must not stray from a real educational foundation. High levels of participation in Berlin’s school music programs are common. Exuberant young students begin their music experience in elementary school and continue to become excellent singers and musicians. All along the way there is pride in performance and appreciation from people of the community. Support is strong as is respect for music as a field of study. Our exemplary music programs often exist alongside dedicated teachers and math departments. Interactions between teachers can invigorate all involved on the way to establishing ownership of a unique and compelling approach to an old set of ideas.
Letters to the Editor Political hand grenades To the editor: Scott Veley has felt the need to begin next year’s political campaign before Santa came down the chimney. I have several questions for him. Did you know that House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz was named a “Children’s Champion” by the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance for making Connecticut’s young children and their families a priority during the 2015 legislative session? Did you also know that the House of Representatives, spearheaded by
Joe Aresimowicz, passed legislation that will help to lower interest rates for student loans and keep them affordable? Do you – or does Anne Reilly – have any idea what the mill rate would have been for Berlin taxpayers without Joe’s efforts to get the state to fund nearly 50 percent of the Berlin High School renovation project? Despite all of the above, your campaign against Joe is going to center around Syrian refugees coming into the country? That is your issue? Really? One final question for you, Scott. In all of your years as a public offi-
Rewards for students as music and math instruction are unified will also come from interaction within the larger heterogeneous group that includes those who are successful in one of either math or music, but not the other. Because music education already has an effect on math studies by the mere fact that students study both concurrently, revolutionary change is not necessary. A simple beginning communicates the connections; any steps forward increase the benefits. When recognizing the strong music program that extends across all of the Berlin Public Schools, consider extending it to include math in ways developed by teachers in the district. See past the dominant emphasis on courses that are directly measured by standardized tests that happens so easily in so many places. Without a doubt there are other creative responses from teachers in the district and we ought not only hear about them but encourage these educational explorations, embracing change that we can be a part of designing here in Berlin. In these times of increased accountability and economic challenges we cannot negate exciting opportunities for new approaches that provide effective teaching and increased learning. We must be bold and take the steps with faith in progress rather than fear of the effects of negative data. Tony Ryba is a Berlin resident and a math teacher of 23 years.

Baden-Powell, there is a lot that can be said about scouting. For one thing, it is a good thing for people to get involved with, if they can. Through scouting, friends are made, skills learned and paths traveled. It can be difficult the farther along the trail to Eagle one goes, but it is worth the reward at the journey’s end. The scouting program teaches responsibility, leadership and team work through camping, hiking and high adventures such as Philmont and SeaBase. There are many merit badges that prove invaluable in life, for example, First Aid, Public Speaking, Personal Fitness as well as “doing a good turn daily” and how to “be prepared” for anything. Of all those who join scouting, less than 5 percent will reach the highest rank of Eagle Scout. That does not mean that the time spent climbing is wasted for those who don’t achieve the rank of Eagle, as all walk away with many life skills. The scouting program is, by far, one of the better organizations in today’s society. I encourage all youths, from first grade through high school, to participate in the scouting program. The skills you learn will last a lifetime and have far-reaching benefits. Jacob Topliff Troop 44
Berlin Girl Scout Brownie Troop 66272 participated in the Girl Scout Can Drive for Christmas Collection recently. Sports Here’s to 2015: A Year in Review Sports memories make it one to remember The Berlin Citizen
It’s been quite the year for Berlin sports. Across seemingly all venues, as well as on and off the courts and fields, events and accomplishments around town brought out the best in Berlin’s young athletes in 2015. Not every game, match and meet was a success, though, nor has every story been one of triumph. With the good has come the bad; likewise, with the bad has come the good. With all that in mind, it’s

time to count down to 2016 with some of the most memorable moments from the year that was: 5. Redcoats football found guilty of recruitment violations; coach Capodice let go This one is hard to ignore, not only because of the recent timeline in which it occurred but also the severity of what came to fruition. Berlin was found by the CIAC to have recruited multiple players from New Britain, resulting in forfeiture of victories, a hefty fine, a 2015 postseason ban and a oneyear probation period for the program for 2016. The allegations and punishment ultimately led to the dismissal of John Capodice as the team’s head coach, a position he held since 2004. Capodice’s tenure included a state championship in 2009 and more than 100 victories. Any way you look at it, this is an unfortunate scenario for both the program – which

Hyjek, both of Kensington, were members of the TCB 13U Americans – a travel baseball team based out of East Hartford – that captured the 2015 Triple Crown Summer Nationals championship in Myrtle Beach on July 20. One of 64 squads from across the country, TCB earned the 15th seed following round robin play, and went on an 8-1 run in the championship double elimination bracket. TCB bested CT Edge Baseball Academy 11-4 in the championship game. Bob Hetu served as a coach for the team. While the team didn’t feature as much local talent as some may expect from an accomplishment this high on the list, the idea of winning a championship in a national tournament is too hard to ignore. It also will hopefully shed light on all that the next wave of well-known Berlin and Kensington athletes will soon accomplish on a bigger stage. Here’s hoping that more 3. Hill, Plainville and Platt to earn the honors. Yet, besting those squads weren’t the only accomplishments for the Redcoats. The girls made it to the Class L semifinals before falling to then-undefeated Suffield, 3-1, as second-year boys coach Sal Parafati was named the CCC South White Coach of the Year. Several athletes from each squad also earned all-conference honors. The girls were represented by Tess Atkinson, Michaela Dehm, Michelle Grieco, Grace McCann, Sophia Morrell and Julia Sisti while five BHS boys received the same honor: Evan Cornwall, Ryan Jenkins, Joe Pettinelli, Noah Silverman and Nico Sznaj. It was a great season for boys soccer. It was a great season for girls soccer. It’s not very often that a sportswriter gets to write that about both squads in the same season. Here’s hoping that success continues into next year.

has largely been considered a Class M powerhouse – and Capodice, who helped countless athletes reach the collegiate ranks on the playing field. Yet the biggest loss in all of this was not getting a chance to see the seniors go out on top. Despite the Redcoats’ 3128 victory over New Britain in the season finale, the forfeiture and playoff ban ended any hopes of the local kids getting a chance to play for postseason glory. Here’s hoping that this is the last sanction that any Berlin athletes have to face for years and years to come.

Yet winning state championships at 80 percent is unheard of, and quite possibly the most dominating stretch in Berlin sports history. While some may not agree with that sentiment, it’s hard to find a more successful group of athletes in a sport as difficult as golf. Here’s hoping that another Redcoats squad proves me wrong and fuels a debate that involves talented athletes and plenty of Berlin success in the coming years.

The joy in creating this list is that it gives us a chance to look back on the year that was. It also gives competitors a chance to step up and make a name for themselves in 2016, as this list is sure to feature different athletes and accomplishments at the close of next year. So it’s with great fondness that we look back on 2015 and all that Berlin’s athletes were able to accomplish, and it’s with great hope that we look towards the future. No one knows what’s to come, but maybe that’s the wonder of what lies ahead. Happy New Year.

In December, Berlin High School Interact Club members participated in two Salvation Army events to benefit those in need during the holiday season. The first event was the New Britain Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, where members filled the holiday gift wishes of 35 children. Audra Veach and Steven Bordonaro acted as bell ringers for the Salvation Army at the Berlin Stop & Shop. On that one day, the club collected $837 for the Salvation Army.
