HONOR CHORUS AND BAND
Thursday, Februar y 18, 2016
Several business stories unfolding in town By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen
Seventeen Berlin High School music and band students participated in the Northern Regional Honor chorus and band. Jeffrey Sirois, director of bands at the high school, served as the co-band chair of the festival. Back row, from left: Aidan Rich (trombone), Ben Shemeth (bass), Theo Reed (trumpet), Mark Bosse (tenor), Chris Hauptfeld (trombone), Alec Rich (tuba), Chris DeRito (euphonium), Ethan Hansen (bass) Front row: Jessica Jha (alto), Caylie Whiteside (alto), Mariel Christiana (flute), Jody DiCicco (flute), Anna Woodin (soprano), Kate Rochette (soprano), Tishaya Thompson (soprano), Lauren Salee (alto), and Rebecca Ferrero (soprano).
New businesses are coming into town, and an older business is at risk of going out. An update: - The Kensington Garden Center has been entangled in a zoning dispute with the town since December and is attempting to work it out with Planning and Zoning. The center and gift shop on the property has been allowed to remain open. Meanwhile, the garden center’s application with the Zoning Board of Appeals is pending while the business works towards a resolution with Planning and Zoning. A cease and desist order was received by the garden center just before Christmas for not complying with what is allowed to be sold in the gift shop. Chairman Bruce
Moore explained that Planning and Zoning must be consistent, and since the center and gift shop were in residential zones, there is a limit to what it can sell. The town’s Corporation Counsel is also taking a look at the issue. The discussion will be continued at the next Planning and Zoning meeting Thursday, Feb. 25. The center’s application for ZBA will continue into March. - The old Roger’s Marketplace is getting a makeover with a new store called Ferndale Market Fresh moving in. The store will be in the same Chamberlain Highway building Roger’s Marketplace housed before it closed last year. - The Chamberlain Highway farmland may one day become wineries. lic hearing for winery regulations has been closed and Development Services Director Hellyn Riggins will have a final draft for the Planning and Zoning commission to look over at its next meeting, Thursday, Feb. 25. The Planning and Zoning Commission will tweak Riggins’ final draft and make changes it deems necessary. A vote may or may not take place at the next meeting. Over the last few weeks, the public, and other commissions, such as the Conservation Commission, gave testimony concerning the regulations.
An applicant for a winery will have to go through a permit process with a public hearing after the regulations are approved. – 303 New Britain Road will be assessed to determine the environmental status of a specific section of the property known as Connecticut Sand and Stone. The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) awarded a $100,000 Brownf ields Assessment Grant to the Town of Berlin to investigate. This assessment will determine whether 303 New Britain Road can be developed, and if future businesses may one day be built there.

Ice-fishing enthusiasts enjoy the cold snap By Sandra Gomez-Aceves Special to The Citizen
later this week. Milano pointed out a broken patch of ice and said a warden told him someone fell through Saturday but made it out OK. “If ice breaks, you can’t get near the edge, the rope is what helps,” Milano said. Milano keeps a length of rope wrapped around part of the sled carrying his gear. Through the cold and the potential risk, the anglers said they enjoy the camaraderie and the catch. Milano tells stories with his buddies as the Wood boys plan what they’ll do with their 11 rainbow and brown trout. “We go home, clean (trout) up, and then we freeze them,” Jeremy Wood said. The Wood boys say they’ll give their fish as a gift to an aunt or save them for a spring meal.

Sebby Milano, 76, a Meriden native and Southington resident, waits for a bite while ice fishing on Black Pond Monday. Milano arrived at the pond Monday morning when the temperature was -8 degrees. To combat the cold, Milano wore five layers of clothing and thick gloves.
34446-01
Ice fishing fanatics finally got their wish after below-zero temperatures swept the area this past weekend, creating enough ice to safely fish. “The season started out slow, then picked up, had a small break in between and now we have plenty of ice,” said Charlie Szadaj, a Meriden resident and owner of Uncle B’s Bait, Tackle and Paintball in Wallingford. The cold snap increased traffic at Szadaj’s shop over the weekend, including many local and regular customers. Several anglers set up at Meriden’s Black Pond Monday. Among them were Berlin residents Jeremy Wood, 16, and brother Josh Wood, 13, who were fishing with their father. “We’ve got 10 trout,” Jeremy Wood said. A couple minutes later, Josh came over to hand him another freshly caught trout. Jeremy helped attach it to their growing fish chain.
Monday marked the Wood boys’ second day out in the same “lucky” spot. They prepared for the below-zero temperatures by bringing a tent. They set up a propane heater along with two camping chairs. Sebby Milano, 76, a Meriden native and Southington resident, said he spent six hours Monday at Black Pond, his favorite spot for ice-fishing. “This time of the year you’re stuck in the house as couch potatoes. It’s about getting out and getting some fresh air,” Milano said. When Milano and his buddies arrived Monday morning, the temperature was minus-8. To keep warm, Milano wore five layers of clothing and a thick pair of gloves. Milano and Szadaj both said four inches of ice was safe enough for fishermen. Szadaj said most local lakes and ponds should have at least five inches after this weekend, though the forecast for safe fishing could change with temperatures expected to rise into the 40s and 50s

Dream Dinners gets cooking under new leadership By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen
Sitting down for a nutritious meal with family is easier said than done, but Dream Dinners in Berlin is trying to change all that. The business, located at 1400 Berlin Turnpike, is taking the stress out of meal-preparations, consolidating it all into less than two hours for a month’s worth of food. Dream Dinners re-opened under new leadership in August and officially cut the ribbon in January. Now, manager Helen DeRito is hoping to get more families to the table and eating well. “I love helping to get dinner on the table for people,” DeRito said. DeRito knows exactly how difficult it can be to get meals together amid busy daily routines. The Berlin resident of nearly 20 years was a customer herself before becoming part of the Dream Dinners team. Now she is running the business with 10 other employees, half of which are also Berlin residents. “It definitely helps being connected to the community,” DeRito said. As opposed to other places that specialize in gourmet dinners, Dream Dinners provides customers with the opportunity to be part of the meal-making process. The Dream Dinners crew gets to know each individual and what their needs are, as well as how many people will be eating the meals. DeRito noted that families make up a majority of the cus-

tomer base; however, senior citizens and busy individuals also come in for their meals. The Dream Dinners menu changes every month, with 17 meal options available. New items are added after first being tested as appetizers. In December, Oven Baked Chicken Chimichangas were a huge appetizer hit and were added to the menu the following month with an even greater response. This month, the business is offering choices such as; Oven Baked Almond Chicken, Build Your Own Quesadillas, Pizza Burger Sliders on Mini Pretzel Buns, and many more meals that are easy to prepare. The process to take home the month’s offerings is simple and starts with pre-registering for Dream Dinners. From there, customers come to the place and get started on their meals. Six stations are set up for them to gather ingredients and prepare the food they will cook at home. “They can customize recipes to their liking, such as adding more garlic if they really like garlic,” DeRito explained. “For instance, we had a customer who wanted whole wheat pasta instead of regular pasta, and we accommodated that.” Eventually, Dream Dinners hopes to get out into the community more and introduce the stress-free dinner process to more people. “You really have to experience it to understand what we do,” DeRito said. For more information, visit dreamdinners.com.

Berlin winter ordinance reminder Town of Berlin follows local ordinances that apply to the removal of ice and snow from public roadways. Property owners are not allowed to shovel, throw or plow ice and snow from private property into or across a public street. These actions are strictly prohibited and subject to a fine as noted in the Town of Berlin Municipal Code, according to the Public Works Department. Residents are responsible to clear snow and ice from any public sidewalk fronting
along their property. All sidewalks are to be cleared and/ or sanded within 24 hours of the completion of street plowing operations. It is the responsibility of the property owner fronting that sidewalk to make it safe for public travel. Failure to do so may result in a fine levied against the abutting property owner. Parking bans become effective automatically (or at the discretion of the Director of Public Works) whenever there is an accumulation of
four (4) inches or more of snow and ice on any of the streets of the town. Parking bans will terminate no sooner than eight hours after any snowstorm, or as directed by the Director of Public Works. Any vehicle left parked on the street after such parking ban has taken effect, will be towed and subject to a fine and all towing and storage charges. For more information regarding snow removal operations, call the Public Works Department at 860-828-7022.

Berlin 12 theater sold to Ga. company Carmike Cinemas, Inc. (“Carmike”) of Georgia, announced that it has acquired two movie theatres, one being the Berlin 12, from a subsidiary of AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. (“AMC”) for a total of $5.4 million in cash. The transactions simultaneously closed upon signing of the purchase agreements. AMC recently acquired these theatres from Starplex Cinemas (“Starplex”) and sold them to Carmike pursuant to a Consent Order with the Department of Justice in connection with its review and approval of the AMC/Starplex transaction. Upon completion of these two transactions, Carmike now operates 275 theatres with 2,942 screens across 41 states. Carmike’s President and Chief Executive Officer David Passman stated, “We are pleased to welcome these two outstanding theatres to the Carmike family. Both the East Windsor Town Center 10 (NJ) and the Berlin 12 Theatre (CT) have been successful in creating a compelling movie-going experience for the residents of East Windsor and Berlin, incorporating the latest technology in picture, sound quality and seating. “The two theatres are located in markets with limited geographic overlap with theatre circuit, and are a perfect complement to our growing presence in the Northeast. We look forward to providing a world-class guest experience to movie-goers in East Windsor and Berlin by creating a premier movie-going experience and family destination with great amenities and outstanding customer service.” Both locations have undergone recent renovations with new seating. The Berlin 12 incorporated plush rocker luxury seating in 2014, while Town Center Plaza Multiplex incorporated 100 percent digital projection and new spacious recliner seating in 2015. The acquisition of the theaters also adds 22 screens with luxury seating. AMC and Starplex theater gift cards will not be accepted at the new Carmike theater. — Press Release

Bring a Bee home The New Britain Bees are looking for families in the Central Connecticut area interested in hosting Bees players during the 2016 baseball season. Hosting a Bee is a great way to get involved with the team. The experience provides families with the chance to know a professional athlete in addition to having exclusive access and experiences, including having lunch with the team prior to the 2016 season, receiving on field recognition before a game, taking the field with your player, and the opportunity to enjoy a game from a luxury suite (20 tickets included) during the season. The only requirements are a private bedroom for the player, use of a bathroom, washer/dryer and kitchen. Any other amenities will be appreciated by the player and the team. The Bees are also seeking houses and apartments available to rent for players during the 2016 season, April to September. For more information in becoming a host family or if landlords with available properties, call 860826-BEES (2337) or email info@nbbees.com. The New Britain Bees are members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and begin their inaugural season of play at New Britain Stadium on April 21.

Berlin Memorial “Caring Service with a Gentle Hand”
KENSINGTON — Harry D. Pentore, of Kensington, devoted and loving husband to Doris (Zola) Pentore for 65 years, died Thursd a y, F e b . 11, 2016, at home two months before his 90th birthday. Born in Kensington, son of the late John and the late Mary (Sartor) Pentore, Harry spent his entire life in service to the town of Berlin. The day after graduating from Berlin High School in 1944, he departed for basic training. As an MP with the U.S. Army he served as a guard in Los Alamos, N.M. to the Manhattan Project and would later witness one of the first atomic explosions. Upon his return from service, Harry attended the University of Hartford. As owner of Towne Food Center in Kensington for 40 years, he was adored and respected by all whom he employed and those who frequented his beloved store. Harry always made sure that his customers were taken care of as though they were family; children of customers never left the store without a box of animal crackers and no area family in need never went without. Harry was a member of St. Paul’s Church, the Connecticut Grocer’s Association, the Italian Political Independent
Club and Knights of Columbus. Until his passing, Harry was the longest continuous member of the Berlin Lions Club, joining in 1948. He was awarded as a Melvin Jones Fellow, and Knight of the Blind, and worked at the Berlin Fair where his presence at the South Gate will be sorely missed and never forgotten. Harry enjoyed spending time with friends and family, visiting Cape Cod and devoting every moment of his life to the service of others. Harry’s caring and loving demeanor, happy smile and kindest touch were hallmarks of his character and readily apparent to all who knew him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Janina Pentore, of Kensington; a daughter and son-in-law, Leanne and David Carlson, of Kensington; a sister, Elsie Dorau, of Kensington; a sister-inlaw, Vivian Bergstrom, of Glastonbury; six adoring grandchildren, John Pentore and his wife, Alyssa, Eric Pentore, Jaquelyn Pentore, Lindsay Paris and her husband, Fred, William Carlson and his fiancé, Leslie Stonebraker, and Mary Kate Carlson; three great-grandchildren, Jack Pentore, and Laura and Ellie Paris; and several nieces, nephews; and cousins including John and Rina Bigotto. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 16, from Porter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Highway in Berlin, with a funeral liturgy at St. Paul’s Church. Burial with full military honors was followed in St. James Roman Catholic Cemetery in Manchester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s Church, 467 Alling St., Kensington, CT 06037, or to the Berlin Lions Club, P.O. Box 23, Kensington, CT 06037. Directions to the funeral home can be found at www.portersfuneral.com.

Obituaries Ann Rosemarie (Catucci) Brunette BERLIN — Ann Rosemarie “Nana“ (Catucci) Brunette, 88, of Berlin, passed away peacefully in her home o n S a t u rd a y, F e b . 13, 2016, after a brief illness and an incredibly full, healthy, and happy life. Born and raised in New Britain, daughter of the late Frank and the late Rochetta “Rachel” (Gentile) Catucci, she graduated from New Britain High School, and worked at New Britain Machine Company where she met her late husband Michael. Together they had four beautiful daughters, Debbi, Sharon, Christine, and Linda; seven grandsons; three granddaughters; and three great-granddaughters, and Ann, “Nana” to her family, was adored by all of them. Her life was all about her family, friends, and church, and an amazing and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and most recently great-grandmother, she was the centerpiece of her family that was everything to her just as she meant everything to her family. She loved cooking and baking for her family, and her Christmas cookies were the highlight of every holiday season. She enjoyed
reading the daily newspaper and watching Judge Judy and the Yankees on TV, playing cards with Landa Fiumara on Saturday nights, her best friend of 76 years, and Sunday drives with her granddaughter Nicole to her daughter’s homes (weather permitting) to hang out with her grandchildren with whom she enjoyed talking sports, politics, recipes, and life in general. A devout Catholic and a member of St. Paul’s Church where she attended Mass every Saturday, she made sure she arrived early to get her favorite parking spot and church seat. Lunch with her dear friend Josephine Borselle on Mondays, and grocery shopping with her friends on Thursdays, were Ann’s other favorite pastimes. Nana was a wonderful lady who will be in our hearts forever. A funeral liturgy took place at St. Paul’s Church, 485 Alling St., Kensington, on Wednesday, Feb. 17. Burial was followed in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. In lieu of flowers, In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in her name, to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Tribute Program, P.O. Box 1000 DEPT 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908. Porter’s Funeral Service in Kensington is assisting her family.

Opinion A good plan for voter registration About one-third of eligible voters in Connecticut are not registered to cast a ballot, and Secretary of the State Denise Merrill wants to see that number shrunk. So, last week, the Democrat proposed legislation which would allow voters to automatically register when conducting business at the state Department of Motor Vehicles. This, of course, should lead to more people voting; which is a positive for both Connecticut and our democracy. Also, the state automatically registering voters at the DMV will make things easier on municipalities, which now handle the vast majority of voter registration. Merrill said this initiative could add some 400,000 Connecticut residents to the voter rolls by making the process “easy and accessible.” “We have the technology to run an easier, more effi-

states. And, of course, politics being what it is, not everyone likes the idea. As stated in the R-J report, “In Oregon, Democrats supported the automatic voter registration law, while Republicans said the government shouldn’t be trying to register people who aren’t interested in voting.”
This is preposterous, and one should question the motives of politicians who wish to see fewer people registered to vote. Cheri Quickmire, executive director of Common Cause in Connecticut, a lobbying group focusing on state government operations, put it well when she
said, “We think our democracy works best when more people are able to make their voices heard.” We agree. But whether newly enrolled voters decide to show up at the polls on Election Day is another story. — Originally published in the Record-Journal
opposed to pitch count limits said, something has to be done about kids who play in multiple leagues. He talked about a kid who pitched for him at the middle school level on Friday, then pitched for an AAU team on Saturday. That’s the kind of stuff that gets kids hurt. And just abut impossible to control. Some coaches tell me that when they try to explain over-pitching to parents, they are ignored. Seidl said that some parents think that practice, practice, practice will help their son improve and get him money for college. Hall of Famer John Smoltz, quoted by John Harper in the New York Daily News, said that when he warns parents about this, they often look at him “like I’m from Mars.”
Further, there is no consensus on what, exactly, famed surgeon Dr. James Andrews says – also in Harper’s piece – caused a seven- to 10-fold increase in injuries to young –13, 14, 15 year old – arms in recent years. For many, it is overwork over a long period of time. For some, it is horrible mechanics which are very hard to unlearn. For others, it’s just bad luck. That is, it just happens. Fact is, there is no scientific evidence that one-size-fits-all pitch counts rules, by themselves, accomplish much. It seems to me that, to account for all the variables – makeup of the kid, experience level, age, mechanics, kinds of pitches the kid throws – an innings limit is the best way to go. There has to be some faith that coaches will act, as D’Aquila said, by “feel” which is, does the kid pass the eye test? A hard innings limit makes sense in that it allows for consideration by the coach of all the variables. At the end of the day, pitching is an unnatural act. Injuries – big and small – are inevitable. There has to be a balance between caution and an understanding that there is a
risk involved in repeatedly throwing a baseball. A genuinely sensible thing would be to ban all breaking pitches by anyone under 16 years old. Another would be to tell kids not to throw every pitch as hard as you can for as long as you can. Neither is likely to happen. Harper wrote that Smoltz said he never saw a radar gun when he was growing up. This fascination with velocity is a huge problem in that young kids are throwing too hard out of the belief – and there is truth here – that throwing hard will impress college scouts and coaches. Heck, I know that scouts come to amateur games armed with radar guns. Kids see that, they muscle up, thus putting additional stress on their developing arms. But it is what it is. Sport contains risk. Think, for a minute, of the stunning risk kids take playing football, a collision sport in which vicious hits are, well, cheered. We can try to minimize risk, but there comes a point when reason has to prevail. Telling all kids you may not pitch more than X number of pitches in X number of days seems, on the surface, to be a good thing. Just like it seems that better helmets, better tackling techniques and 15-yard penalties make football safe. Reality: Football will never be safe. Pitching will never be safe. All the band-aids in the world won’t make either one safe. Slightly safer? Slightly less risk? Maybe and maybe. A pitch count rule is a sincere attempt to help. But like most one-size-fits-all rules, it cannot do what its supporters hope it will do. Just can’t.
Bransfield From Page 14
this approximate, too? You bet. I have been in the press box when a newspaper reporter, keeping a hand count, has asked the guy with the electronic book how many pitches Pitcher A has thrown. Here’s the conversation. “Well, I have him for 108,” said the scorer. “But I may have missed a couple.” “Yeah, said the newspaper reporter. “I have him for 110.” If you don’t think this is going to happen, trust me, it has already happened a lot. But aside from the bureaucratic nightmare, it’s the philosophy behind it that is suspect. Coach after coach, from Nick Cerreta at Xavier, to
Matt Altieri at Sheehan, to Middletown Legion coach Tim D’Aquila, talked about how each kid is different. So much depends on what the kid does in the off-season, his physical makeup, his conditioning level, his age and his experience. To suggest that a pitch limit will somehow protect a kid from injury doesn’t stand up under the most cursory of examinations. It is a well-intended attempt to keep kids from injury, but it will, as Brookes said, accomplish nothing. There is nothing a high school coach can do to prevent a kid from pitching in the winter, in the summer and in the fall. AAU travel teams, Fall Baseball, and on-your-own winter throwing sessions abound. As Josh Cofield, the Middletown High coach who is

They should not be taken for granted; they are out patrolling 24-7, keeping us safe every day. They are at auto crash scenes, medical emergencies, suspicious conditions, home alarms and more that we might not even be aware of. I’d also like to commend the men and

Thanks to Police Chief Paul Fitzgerald and Assistant Chief John Klett, for running a well-organized operation. Awesome job To the editor: I’d like to take a minute to commend the Town of Berlin Public Works snow removal team. Upon returning to the New Britain post office, after completing my deliveries in Kensington, I asked my fellow carriers if their mail routes were cleaned as well as mine was. We all raved about
how fast and how incredibly professionally it was done. After a storm, a mailman rues delivering on cul-desacs. After both storms recently, all eight cul-de-sacs I deliver to were plowed within inches of the curb. I realize this isn’t always possible with more severe storms, but an awesome job was done by all. PETS OF THE WEEK
Precious Opie Precious is a beautiful dilute tortoiseshell. She was given away when she was only five weeks. She has some degree of “only kitten syndrome,” which is common when kittens are alone and don’t learn to play properly. She is loving and tries hard to fit in. Opie is outgoing, frisky and good with all animals and people. He was prone to urinary tract infections but since he began his new diet nine months ago, he has been clear of any infections.
