Annual tea party a formal occasion By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen

The halls of the Berlin Free Library were filled to the brim with patrons attending the annual tea fundraiser April 25. UpBeat volunteers served tea and sandwiches to members of the Red Hat Society, the Berlin Historical Society, and others. “It’s a wonderful idea,” said patron Kathy Cruz, as there are not many places one can go to enjoy a traditional English tea. The cucumber sandwiches impressed Johanna Meisterling, who attended with other members of the historical society. “And they have the most beautiful, adorable dishes.” The Berlin Free Library Association has been a source of entertainment and edification in the See Tea / Page 2

there was disagreement among the council over whether to schedule the hearing in the first place, with the vote passing 4-3. Democrats and Deputy Mayor William Rasmussen, an Independent, voted in favor. The Democrats and Rasmussen said that they did not necessarily support the project as presented, but they

Comcast just cut the pollution and carbon emissions from its electricity use. The company commemorated the activation of its new Bloom Energy fuel cell April 21, a day before Earth Day. The new fuel cell will provide 80 percent of the power at the company’s Western New England Region Headquarters, located off the Berlin Turnpike. Because the fuel cell is significantly more efficient and provides cleaner energy than the power grid it replaces, Comcast is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 1.93 million pounds each year, equivalent to emissions from 121 homes or 185 cars. “Technology and innovation are at the core of everything Comcast does and this project is another example of how we are deploying innovative technology to build a stronger, more reliable and secure broadband network for our customers,” Mary McLaughlin, Comcast Senior Vice President for the Western New England Region said in a statement. “By generating clean energy on-site, we can enhance the resiliency of our operations while also supporting our sustainability goals and reducing

BLOOD must follow historic district regulations, explained board member Norm Margnelli and board chair Carol Welz. UpBeat volunteer Allie Schulz said that UpBeat helps with the event every year, with one UpBeat house participating to serve the tea and another participating to assist with setting up for the event. It was the first visit to the Berlin Free Library for Schulz. “They have a lot of cool stuff here.” One of the library’s most famed attractions is the train installation in the children’s room upstairs. The train and track was donated and installed by the Kiwanis Club. Margnelli said it’s always great to see that “kids are still reading.” Lorraine Stub of the Berlin Historical Society said that the library has been in its present location since the 50s and has long been an institution in town.

Two tables were filled by members of the Berlin chapter of the Red Hat Society, a social organization for “mature women,” as member Mary Ann Goodell explained. Members of the society wear red hats and purple dresses, a tradition started by artist Sue Ellen Cooper, who gave a friend a birthday gift of a red hat bowler along with a copy of the poem “Warning” by Jenny Joseph, which begins “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple / With a red hat that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me.” Members of the society “take great enjoyment in occasions like this,” Goodell said, as well as attending movies and patronizing restaurants together. Though the society initially accepted older women only, women under 50 are now permitted to join. The younger members are “pink hatters,” attired in pink and lavender.

Tea community for more than a century. “We’re a reader’s library,” rather than a research library, explained head librarian Marcia Trotta. The library has a small but devoted following and is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. As the association receives no financial backing from the town’s tax rolls, the free library draws much of its support from fundraisers such as the annual tea. Of late the funding is especially needed, as the cupola is in need of repair, and repairs

next stage at a public hearing,” said Rasmussen. “I’m not anxious to spend two million bucks, but we need to sit down with all parties,” said Councilor Peter Rosso (D). The canceled hearing was to concern bonding $2,135,000 to construct the design for the course the town previously commissioned from Saratoga Associates. Timberlin was expected to pay for the upgrades via course revenue. No final decisions have been made, but discussions have included the possibility of raising fees on golf rounds or golf cart rentals by some $2 to $5. Republicans said that taking the plan to hearing implied the council endorsed it. “A lot of thought and work was put into where we are today,” Mayor Rachel Rochette (D) said April 21, noting that town officials have already invested time and money in the proposed design. Rochette said many options were explored and some would “not return a significant amount of money.” The mayor wants to hear from the public before making a decision. Other council members also expressed hesitation April 21. Councilor David Evans (R) said that he did not support “this particular approach,” because he has not seen “resounding support from the public.” Councilor Margaret Morelli (D) said she wanted to hear discussion of “pros, cons and alternatives” at the hearing. Councilor Charles Paonessa (R) was concerned that a negative reaction from the public now could poison the well on public support for a different and less expensive solution to problems at Timberlin. As the council heard previously, these include liability from balls hit at the current range landing in adjoining property, and the need to keep the course competitive. “The only way to explore all options is to get to the

The fuel cell is also more efficient than the standard power-generating reciprocating engine, which operates at some 38 percent efficiency “on a good day,” Fox said. Though carbon dioxide is emitted, it is “significantly reduced.” The new fuel cell also provides the facility a backup power source during outages. The Berlin facility serves customers in Connecticut, Western Massachusetts, Vermont, Western New Hampshire and New York and is the home of 450 of Comcast’s some 1,200 Connecticut employees.

Opinion Editorial: ‘Anthony!’ Those of us who date back more than a few years may remember this TV commercial from 1969: The mother is yelling out the window for her son to come in for dinner because it’s Wednesday, Prince Spaghetti Day, in Boston’s North End. But it could have been Waterbury or New Britain or the South End of Hartford, because in those days there were still Italian and other ethnic neighborhoods all over New England. In Meriden, the commercial could have been filmed in the Italian section around Lewis and Springdale avenues. Turn back the calendar a couple of generations, and it could have been Mamma Ponzillo yelling for little Rosa and Carmela to come in. (Then, having eaten her Prince spaghetti, little Rosa would perhaps have changed her name to Ponselle, gone to New York and become a big opera star.) By Anthony’s time, though, the ethnic neighborhoods

were disappearing as people moved to the suburbs and gave up the customs, and the languages, they had brought from the Old Country. But the ghosts of those neighborhoods can still be found on a map of Connecticut provided by the Internet-only news publication CTMirror.org. This map, based on data from the Census Bureau, is color-coded to show the second-most-spoken language in each census tract. The most-spoken language in most tracts, of course, is English. Only in a small part of Meriden, larger sections of New Britain and Bridgeport and a big chunk of Hartford does English take a back seat. Spanish is the main second-place language across the state, as one would expect. But we are cautioned that there may be anomalies, here and there, caused by inadequate census data and simple arithmetic: Census tracts are small — around 4,000 people each — and therefore

a few households speaking the same non-English language can make a big difference. In some places, the margin of error is actually bigger than the percentage of people speaking the second-place language. For instance, is there really a significant Hindi-speaking minority in the Berlin-Rocky Hill area, as the map indicates? Or Gujarati in Yalesville? Or Urdu in Middlefield? Perhaps not; again, we’re looking at small numbers of people speaking each of many languages, and large margins of error. There are areas where no second-place language dominates, so the map will highlight the largest of many very small groups. Taking those caveats into account, though, the color-coded map holds some surprises. There is still a part of western Meriden where the second-place language is Italian. And Southington, which we might think would show Italian as the leading

non-English language, is colored more Polish, with Italian in the southeast and a French zone near the center of town. (Rural tracts are bigger in area, so they have a greater effect on the look of the map than do urban tracts, where those 4,000 people may fit into just a few blocks.) New Britain, where the dominant second-place language is Spanish, still has a substantial Polish population (as anyone who’s been on Broad Street lately knows) but on the map, Berlin looks more Polish — because the town’s tracts are mixed enough, by ethnic background, that the 4 or 5 percent who told the census taker they speak Polish constitute, not a majority, but the biggest language group after English. For the same reason, a showing of 2.68 percent is enough to make Polish the second-place language in one part of Wallingford. What have we learned? A few things:

• As expected, the importance of Spanish as the second-most-spoken language stands out across much of the state, as it does nationally. Here in Connecticut this is largely, though not entirely, the result of migration by Americans from Puerto Rico. • We can still see the shadows of the earlier waves of Polish-, Italian- and French-speaking immigrants, or those speaking German, Portuguese or Greek, from a time when each major ethnic group would have its own church, its own stores and other businesses. • A newer development is that many places on the map now show Chinese, Urdu, Gujarati, Tagalog, Hindi or “other Asian languages” in the slot just below English. • In other words, this is not Anthony’s New England anymore. — Editorial previously published in the Record-Journal

Disappearing bees discussed at Berlin-Peck By Charles Kreutzkamp

The Berlin Citizen

Holly Gagnon of the New Britain Youth Museum at Hungerford Park filled in attendees on the perils facing bees. | Charles Kreutzkamp / The Berlin Citizen did a study that suggests neonicotinoids harm bees. However, results of studies have been mixed and there are many other factors impacting bee populations, including reduced habitat and climate change, the report noted. Gagnon added that pesticides intended to kill insects often kill bees, and that trace amounts of pesticides and herbicides have been found even in organic honey, suggesting that bees are often exposed to these chemicals.

25 Years

For Gagnon pesticides are with a food source. Gagnon recommended “the biggest concern apart from mites.” Gagnon said there are many ways people can help bees. One is to leave areas of the lawn “natural,” allowing grass to grow long, which is beneficial both for bees and for butterflies and hummingbirds. Another is to provide a water source. Bees can drown easily, so Gagnon recommends putting water in a birdbath along with rocks and sticks. Growing or keeping wildflowers can provide bees

The plight of the pollinators was discussed at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library, April 23, drawing around a dozen residents. The program addressed both pollination in general and the important role played by bees, which have been under threat. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2010 report on colony collapse disorder states that “numerous causes… have been proposed as examined… it is becoming increasingly clear that no single factor alone is responsible for the malady.” The report suggests that colony collapse disorder may be the result of combined stressors on bees. “Over the past year, several independent studies have shown that bees are exposed to a wide range of pesticides and that some pesticides have interactive effects (on bee mortality) with other pesticides, with bee pests, or with viruses.” Holly Gagnon of the New Britain Youth Museum at Hungerford Park presented information about the role hummingbirds, butterflies, moths, flies, and beetles play in pollinating various plants. Connecticut is home not only to honeybees and bumblebees, but also many species of solitary bees as well as monarch butterflies, tiger swallowtail butterflies, and the ruby throated hummingbird. Gagnon surprised library-goers with another fact: mosquitoes are pollinators as well, feeding on plant nectar. Researchers in the ’80s discovered Varroa mites lay their eggs alongside bee larva that then mature and attach themselves to the bees. “They hang onto the bees and suck them dry, and they can give them viruses,” Gagnon explained. Beekeepers sometimes address the problem by spreading powdered sugar onto bees, causing them to groom themselves and each other, removing the mites. Gagnon presented a recent NPR report on neonicotinoids, a type of insecticides. According to the report, researchers in Sweden recently

avoiding use of pesticides and herbicides. “If you must use them, it’s best to use them when bees are not active, either late at night or very early in the morning.” The largest and most challenging way to help bees is to keep them yourself. “If you are interested in becoming a beekeeper, the Connecticut Beekeepers association is a great group. They meet once or twice a month and they hold bee school in February.” In a good year, a hive can provide as much as 50 pounds of honey as well as wax that can be used to make candles, soap, and lotion. Many attendees had high praise for the event. “It was wonderful, very informative,” said local resident Ken Bergeron, a retired chef and cookbook author. Though Bergeron is a vegan chef, he still believes in using honey to support beekeepers and, through them, the bees. The chef said he was “very concerned” about the decline of the bee population.

A TASTE OF THE ‘REAL WORLD’

For the third consecutive year, Berlin High School students participated in a Junior Achievement job-shadowing program at Comcast’s Western New England region headquarters in Berlin. House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz and Berlin Superintendent of Schools David Erwin joined representatives from Junior Achievement and Comcast. The students were paired with Comcast volunteers who work jobs matching students’ interests. The program gives students the opportunity to see firsthand what it’s like to work in an office and practice interviewing.

Sports Redcoat HoF inducts Class of 2015 By Nate Brown

The Berlin Citizen

Ten new individuals and one unforgettable team joined the hallowed Redcoat Athletic Hall of Fame on Sunday, as the Class of 2015 was honored in front of friends and family at the Aqua Turf in Southington. “I think the class of 2015 has continued to add to the excellent history of Berlin athletics,” said James Capodice, who serves as president on the Board of Directors for the hall. “The athletic programs at Berlin have always had an excellent reputation and this group has just furthered that.” This year’s class, the sixth in the hall’s history, brings the number of members – including athletes, coaches and contributors – to 69 in total, as well as five teams. The 2015 class was comprised of George Kanupka (BHS Class of 1936), Francis Rio (’56), Dan Blanchette (’69), James Cromleigh (’71), Derrick Sanderson (’85), Scott Gentile (’89), Katie Baccaro (’93), Elizabeth Clements Capson (‘00), longtime golf coach Jim Bryers, contributor Bob Zipadelli and the 1998 undefeated state champion girls soccer team. Kanupka, who died in 1988, was the lone posthumous member of the class. His children spoke on his behalf.

Individual members of the HoF Class of 2015 included, front row, from left, George Kanupka III for George Kanupka (‘36), Fran Rio (‘56), Dan Blanchette (‘69), James Cromleigh (‘71), Derrick Sanderson (‘85); back, from left, Scott Gentile (‘89) and son, Evan, Rich Baccaro for Katie Baccaro (‘93), Elizabeth Clements Capson (‘00), coach Jim Bryers and Bob Zipadelli. | Courtesy of Paul Salina Baccaro was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts but sent along a statement on her behalf. Also, learning how to win but also learning how to lose and how to take that in. And then take those real life experiences and then taking them out into the work force.” Like Sanderson, many other inductees spoke of being able to take away life lessons from their high school years. One thing best remembered by most, though, was the simplicity of sporting a Redcoat uniform during their time at Berlin High. “Playing football for Berlin High was fun. That’s when the game was fun,” said Cromleigh, who went on to play collegiately for Kansas State of the then-Big 8 Conference. “College football just turned into a business, even back when I played. At Berlin High, I just remember the fun we had; we just seemed to be closer to the team members at the high school.” Throughout the ceremony, inductees thanked friends and family for their support throughout the years and shared plenty of stories, many of which garnered hearty laughs from the crowd. One such tale was spun by Zipadelli, who joked that he
