Blumenthal sits down with Citizen staff By Charles Kreutzkamp

“Rail transportation is at the very top of my agenda,” Blumenthal said, discussU.S. Senator Richard ing the Hartford Line that Blumenthal visited the offices will be entering service at of the Record-Journal and the Berlin train station next met with weeklies reporters year. The Democrat believes for a 40-minute interview transportation and “healthy infrastructure” are critical April 3. The Berlin Citizen

for economic growth and job creation, but that safety must be improved. “Collisions that occur on tracks are a major problem across the country,” Blumenthal said. One such incident happened in Berlin last year. The senator noted that many accidents occur at

crossings without whistles or lights, and that better engineering, education, and enforcement is needed. When asked about the use of misleading statistics in politics, Blumenthal said “that is a major frustration for me, because I look at some news

reports and think to myself, what is the source of those statistics?” Even when statistics are sourced, they may be misleading. Blumenthal thinks more attention should be paid to independent See Blumenthal / Page 2

A car crashed into the Irving Gas station on the Berlin Turnpike April 2. Police say the driver suffered a seizure and lost control of the vehicle. No injuries were reported, including to the driver. Getachew “Getch” Dires, owner of Randy’s Wooster Street Pizza Express, located at the site, said he was able to reopen at 2 p.m. April 3 after the location passed inspection. Automotive chemicals were spilled due to the crash. Getch said he was pleased no one was hurt and is looking forward to celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Randy’s franchise this summer. With snow still on the ground in April, the long winter is taking a bite out of area growers’ production and profits in Berlin, Cheshire, and Durham. “Mother nature does what she wants,” said Alex Arisco of Arisco Farms in Cheshire. The cold has “slowed down a lot of the growth,” even in greenhouses, which depend on sunlight. Energy bills for heated greenhouses have also risen dramatically. “Once in a while we get a mild winter, but it never makes up for all the tough ones we get. We’ve got to tighten our belts.” Arisco Farms grows flowers for Easter and Mother’s Day, as well as some edible plants. See Agriculture / Page 6

Blumenthal fact-checking organizations such as Media Matters and the Washington Post’s “Pinocchio rating.” “I always try to make sure I have a source,” Blumenthal said, referencing a recent press conference where he urged Connecticut taxpayers owed a total of $13 million under the earned income tax credit to file their taxes before the deadline. “These numbers come from the IRS,” Blumenthal said, noting that those who could receive the earned income tax credit are lower income Americans. Blumenthal thinks political polarization in Washington and “paralysis” is a complex problem, but believes two simple changes could lead to significant improvement: eliminating the filibuster and the Hastert Rule. The senator said he “opposed the filibuster from the very start of my fall term, when there were only 17 of us … I do believe support for abolishing the filibuster is building,” both because of the

“growing frustration,” and because it has been overused, with filibusters skyrocketing in recent years. The Hastert Rule allows the speaker of the house to not allow votes on bills that would otherwise pass, Blumenthal noted, which prevents Republicans and Democrats from building coalitions together. The senator said Speaker of the House John Boehner has used the rule to prevent passage of “commonsense gun regulation,” in the form of background checks and other limited provisions, and the DREAM Act, which would have provided visas to “provide more of the skilled labor our businesses need.” “We can work together,” Blumenthal said, noting that these bills had support from members of both parties, but that the rules in the house and the senate have prevented majority rule. Gerrymandering of House districts is another significant problem, according to Blumenthal, along with campaign financing that “tends to drive people to appeal to their base of support,” with both sides going to “extremes.” “I tend to be a centrist myself,” Blumenthal said, noting collaborative efforts he has made with Republicans, including working on veterans issues with Sen. John McCain. “I stood next to the President with John McCain as he signed” the Clay Hunt bill to prevent suicides and improve treatment of mental illness among veterans. “This is a problem with Connecticut ties and it affects all America. It’s a national disgrace for the strongest, greatest country in the world to fail to provide mental healthcare for veterans.” Johanna Eldridge, the wife

of Justin Eldridge of Waterford, a veteran who took his own life, attended the bill signing at Blumenthal’s invitation. When asked about what some call “the Warren wing,” of the Democratic Party, Blumenthal said he thinks the divide among Democrats over issues Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has championed has been exaggerated. Blumenthal is currently working with Warren on addressing the college debt problem by lowering interest rates and increasing Pell grants. “We have $1.3 trillion in college debt,” Blumenthal noted, the largest debt apart from mortgages in America. “It cramps our economy because a student graduating with debt can’t buy a home, begin a family, or start a new business. It is suffocating for that individual for years and years.” “I have been a strong advocate of consumer issues,” Blumenthal said, working with Warren on consumer protections “protecting veterans from for-profit college schemes” that specifically target their benefits, and payday loans. “I don’t view that as left-wing, I view that as basic consumer protection.” Blumenthal worked to force General Motors to set up a compensation fund for victims of the company’s ignition switch defects, and to force money to be returned to individuals who were being charged for cell phone services they did not want and did not consent to. “On some issues I may not necessarily agree with Elizabeth Warren … (but) I think there is less division than there may appear … I think she provides a useful and important voice,”

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal visits the Record-Journal building in Meriden. | Charles Kreutzkamp / The Berlin Citizen said Blumenthal, who thinks “protecting people from the excesses of Wall Street” is an issue that has “come to Main Street.”

In next week’s edition, Blumenthal discusses autonomous vehicles, head injuries in football, and his stance on gun control.

Christopher deRito, Senior Patrol Leader of Boy Scout Troop 44 in Berlin, recently earned the highest rank, of Eagle. To obtain the rank of Eagle, a scout must earn 21 merit badges, and organize and complete a community service project. The teenager never doubted he was going to work towards becoming an Eagle Scout. It is sort of a family thing. He is the third and youngest son in his family, all of whom have now earned their Eagle Scout award. It has become an honorable tradition. All deRito had to decide, was what he wanted his project to do for the community. He decided he wanted to give back to his alma mater, McGee Middle School, with his project. He planned and built eight benches for the courtyard at the middle school. He recalled over his years at McGee, that the courtyard could have been more functional had there been outdoor seating for the students to use. The most challenging part of the execution of his project was planning out how to build the benches. This was deRito’s first experience with carpentry. Through the course of the project, several changes had to be made, which tested his leadership

“We live by the weather,” added Joe A r i sco of Cheshire’s T&D Growers. By the time the weather warms up, the season for pansies will already have ended. “We’ll be going straight into the summer season.” “We are two weeks later than last year, and last year was late,” said Pierre Bennerup of Sunny Border Nurseries in Berlin. Sunny Border grows two thirds of its plants outside. “Even if we could sell them, our customers want to see some color.” As for many growers, early spring is a crucial season. “We do three-quarters of our business between March 21 and June 21,” Bennerup said.

“That will be down to two months instead of three and we can only ship so much.” Though Sunny Borders will be taking a financial hit this year due to the weather, the business remains in strong financial shape. Good weather on weekends could also help boost business. “Garden centers do 80 percent of their business on the weekends,” Bennerup said. “We could bail out if we have really sunny weekends.” David Zemelsky, owner at Starlight Gardens in Durham has been successfully growing starter seedlings in low tunnels, which are covered in plastic but not heated. It has been a challenge keeping them clear of snow, however. Zemelsky was able to start planting lettuce April 2, only a week late. Starlight Gardens is a US-

BERLIN — Edward Joseph Kordoski, beloved husband of Rita (Grigor) Kordoski, passed away Monday, March 9, 2015, in the Hospital of Central Connecticut after a long and valiant fight against lung cancer. Ed was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on May 9, 1932, to the late Mary Slowik. His elementary education and Catholic instruction for Holy Communion and Confirmation was received at St. Clair’s School, followed by attending Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. At age 17, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Army. After basic training, he enlisted to attend airborne training at Fort Campbell, Ky. He became a paratrooper with the 188th Airborne Infantry Support Company, 11th Airborne Division. With extended duty due to the Korean Conflict, Ed proudly served three and a half years of active duty. Upon discharge, Ed sought employment opportunities in Connecticut. Ed eventually became the vice president of Northern Industries, Inc., then served as its acting president until its sale. Ed then started Conn. Pipe and Valve; and was its president until it was sold to Regal Supply Company, where he continued to work part time, until he retired at age 70. Upon retirement, Ed and his wife took many trips with the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and the New Britain Museum of American Art, where she was a docent, and they both volunteered. Ed also took advantage of his leisure time at the

Opinion

Unwise, unwanted spending Over the last few weeks, there has been a couple of letters from Democratic Town Council members and commissioners criticizing Republican Town Council members for our “no” vote for one of the grants for future development on Farmington Avenue. What these letters failed to point out was that most of the Town Council’s votes to accept or approve applications for federal or state grant money for the 889, 903 and 193 Farmington Avenue properties, came prior to the Nov. 4, 2014 police station referendum vote. And at the time of the vote, it made sense to have these grant items locked up in case the referendum to spend $21 million for a police station in this location was approved by the voters of Berlin. Now that the taxpaying voters of Berlin have

officials to actively soundly rejected the promote economic police station projand real estate deect at $21 million at velopment, town this location, would officials should not it still be wise to be actually involved spend our tax dollars in private real estate (regardless of where development. these tax dollars The Democratic come from) on this Brendan leadership (both property until we Luddy elected and apfind out how the Popointed) of Berlin, lice Commission is going to revise and resubmit may have too much of an their statement of need, and, emotional attachment to this extremely polluted site as a result, the location of our new police station? Why on Farmington Avenue, and feel we should keep spendshould the Town of Berlin ing your tax dollars, in hopes get involved with private that somehow, this will spur economic development in this area if the police station economic development here in Berlin. There still is a very project is moved to a less costly unknown at the 889 costly location? If the new Farmington Ave. property, police station is no lonas the Town Council was ger slated to be built at the presented with an estimate Kensington Furniture/Kraft of nearly $2 million for a Foods site, shouldn’t we permanent underground-waconsider selling this propter recovery system that may erty to a private developer? While it’s okay for our town be needed at this site. Test-

ing of the site is still ongoing, with uncertain results forthcoming. It’s seems to me, that our current and past Democratic leaders feel it is more important to secure government grant money, and all the strings attached with it, so that our town can be redeveloped in someone else’s vision, a vision shared by mostly unelected Hartford government officials who don’t live here. And that’s why, in my view, the location of the Kensington Furniture/Kraft Foods site for the new police station was chosen and not because it was the best site or location or best price, but because government grant money could be secured, for “Transit Oriented Development” (T.O.D), which will lead to, among other things, high density housing and parking garages.

The Kensington Furniture and Kraft Foods sites, if properly developed by an experienced real estate developer, could easily yield $75-100,000 in tax revenue annually — it is a prime piece of commercial real estate. A new police station on Farmington Avenue would not pay any taxes. Or can this state grant money be used for other badly needed infrastructure issues such as road repairs throughout all of Berlin, Kensington, and East Berlin? I urge local Democrats who have been criticizing Republican Town Councilors to get the facts straight and stop spinning select information to serve themselves and the agenda of Hartford officials who don’t reside in our town. The writer is a Republican Town Councilor.

CFPA opposes $2 million cuts to state parks By Charles Kreutzkamp

The Berlin Citizen

Gov. Dannel Malloy’s proposed budget cuts to state parks of approximately $2 million were met with oppo-

sition from the Connecticut Forest and Park Association, headquartered in the Rockfall section of Middlefield. “We were surprised and disappointed to see the cuts that were proposed, though

it is a difficult year and we understand there is a lot of pressure on the budget,” said executive director of CFPA Eric Hammerling. Hammerling believes state parks “contribute greatly to

value,” UConn economics professor and director of the Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis Fred Carstensen told UConn Today shortly after the study was released. That study found $544 million in state revenue related to tourism, $264 million in revenue from fishing, and $100 million from hunting. Hammerling said the study See Parks / Page 11

BOE member Carbone resigns Board of Education member Stefanie Carbone has submitted her resignation from the Board of Education, according to BOE president Gary Brochu. In a letter submitted to the Town Clerk, Carbone’s resignation stated she has relocated and will no longer reside in Berlin. Carbone was elected to the Board of Education in 2013. In her announcement to the board concerning her need to resign, she expressed regret at having to leave her work on the board and the satisfaction

also attributed 9,000 jobs to state parks and forests, and found that every dollar spent on state parks resulted in $38 of benefits to the Connecticut economy. Hammerling said it even makes sense to invest more in state parks, and that the cuts may result in “things of value being lost,” including seasonal jobs. Malloy’s press office did not return requests for comment March 25 and 27. The budget also proposed eliminating funding for the Council on Environmental Quality, for savings of some $140,000 per year. CEQ was founded in 1971 and is an independent agency that looks at progress toward air, land, water and wildlife goals. Hammerling pointed out the organization employs only two paid staff members and has an all-volunteer council. He said that although the budget proposal claims to transfer responsibilities from CEQ to DEEP, a great deal of the organization’s value lies in its independence from the state government, which “makes it an effective watchdog agency … some of the recommendations CEQ makes are geared to more effective environmental agency operations, and that is essential for Connecticut.” Office of Policy and Management Secretary Benjamin Barnes, Malloy’s budget chief, told The Connecticut Mirror that DEEP itself is an environmental watchdog and that it made sense to have DEEP take over CEQ’s responsibilities. The Mirror pointed out that cutting state park funding has been “a favorite target of governors and legislatures looking to save a few bucks” especially since the economic crash of 2008. Connecticut and Rhode Island are now the only states that use the state’s general fund exclusively for state parks.

State Sen. Ted Kennedy Jr., who represents the 12th Senate District, created legislation to fund state parks with voluntary $5 donations included in motor vehicle registrations. The donations, however, are structured to be “opt-out,” with the box to donate already checked. Car owners who do not wish to contribute need to specifically opt out from the donation on the form. Structuring the funds as a donation prevents the state from raiding the money for other purposes. “This idea is not to replace the general fund commitment,” Kennedy told The Mirror. “It’s to augment the general fund commitment.” The senator told The Mirror the strategy has been used successfully by several states. “I spent some time studying what are some of the things we should at least be considering.” Kennedy said that funding methods used by other states are “not going to fly,” such as increasing sales tax or real estate transfer taxes.

For more Jim Bryers took over the information, contact Patty BHS boys golf program in Smith at (860) 828-1998 or 1993 from the legendary inswomanct@aol.com. coach Don Bates, a national coach of the year and a member of both the Connecticut Coaches and Berlin Athletic Hall of Fame. Bryers coached boys golf for 16 seasons, compiling an overall record of 299-106-7. His teams won 11 Northwest Conference championships and four state championships, in 1993, 2000, 2001 and 2004. Bryers never expected to win a state championship in his first year of coaching after it took Bates 44 years to win his first. He accomplished this with one senior, one junior and three freshmen. His teams were also state runners-up in 2002, 2003 and 2007. The boys team also won the Pisk Memorial Tournament three times, in 2004, 2006 and 2007. Also, Bryers started the BHS girls golf program in 1994. During his coaching ca-

reer, he was selected as the CHSCA Golf Coach of the Year and was a member of the CIAC golf committee. Bryers was an educator for 37-plus years, having graduated from Newington High School in 1965 and going on to attain his BS in mathematics and his MS in education from CCSU. He started his teaching career in Seymour in 1970 before moving to McGee Middle School in September of that year and then onto Berlin High School. According to Bryers, the one constant throughout his career was the wonderful students with whom he was honored to spend his over 37 years. Bryers married Kathryn Roby Bryers, also an educator at Berlin High School, in 1972, and they have two children: son Adam and his wife, Emily Merris Bryers and their son Christian James Bryers of Meriden, and daughter Robyn Bryers and her spouse Batya Elliney of Prescott, Arizona.

Redcoat teams ready for spring Baseball Head coach: Leo Veleas (28th season). Last season: The Redcoats finished the regular season 19-1 and earned the top spot in the Class L tournament before falling in the second round to East Lyme, 4-3. Key losses: There were plenty: Mitch Williams, Kyle Naples, Greg Konowski, Dave Condon and Daren Grabowski were among the many lost to graduation. This season: Seniors Jared Gallagher and Danny Garofalo will look to lead the rotation while seniors Alec Norton and Logan Taricani will lead a much younger lineup. Outlook: After so many losses from last season’s team, 2015 could be filled with setbacks in all facets of Berlin’s on field performance. Yet Gallagher and Garofalo had such successful junior campaigns that watching them work on the mound could very well make up for any shortcomings elsewhere. Analysis: Losing so many key cogs in a 20-win season will be difficult to replace, yet Veleas and his staff have overcome plenty in the past. Expect a return to the postseason with another strong showing in the CCC South thanks to stellar play from the class of 2015.

(infield/outfield/pitcher) will lead the squad, with contributions expected from sophomores Vanessa Reimer (shortstop) and Jackie Arute. Outlook: The team enjoyed a two-year run that was fueled by the on-field excellence of the class of 2014. With that group now gone, Pires will look to his current seniors to help make the transition a smooth one. Natural athletes like Anderson, Guild and Germano should make it an easy transition, even if the wins are more difficult to come by. Analysis: While there is plenty of pop held over from last year’s lineup, the biggest question marks will be on the mound for Berlin. Harris is irreplaceable, yet someone still needs to step up and pitch. If Pires can find a surprise in the stable or a committee that works, the playoffs will be well within reach. If not,

leave a gaping hole at the top of the Redcoat lineup, and in the locker room. This season: A large junior class – Brandon Funari, Will Friday, Justin Park, Paul Choma and Nick Perrone – will look to lead the team to another strong showing. Sophomore Ricky Nappi will contribute, as well. Outlook: Losing a trio of golfers such as Forauer, Bostrom and Samiotis is never easy, yet Line knows he has the right group of boys to carry the torch forward. Schools Griswold readers raise funds for animal rescue By Danielle Salina During the first week of March, Mary E. Griswold Elementary School students participated in NEA’s Read Across America, a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually the week of March 2, Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Griswold teachers and students were excited to join the thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers across the country, with the common goal of bringing children and books together. Celebratory events at Griswold school ranged from Dr. Seuss classroom read-alouds, to Dr. Seuss-inspired dress-up

days, such as Fox in Sox days, where children were invited to wear their craziest pair of socks, and Cindy Lou Hoo day, in which students donned their craziest hair style. The cafeteria even joined in on the fun, and served green eggs and ham. Griswold school also hosted its first Read In, an after-school event in which students explored different reading event stations. “Reading is one of the most important areas that we do each and every day,” shared Griswold principal Laurie Gjerpen. “The staff at Griswold school designed an interactive evening to celebrate that.”

Griswold staff members as well as Berlin-Peck Memorial librarian Jennifer Needham, entertained students with story time read-aloud centers. Throughout this extra special week, Griswold school also had its Pledge-a-Thon; students recorded their reading minutes for the week, and then collected pledges. Griswold students were enthusiastic about saving Berlin’s animals, and by the end of the week, nearly $1,200 was collected for Wings of Freedom, a non-profit organization. “Wings of Freedom Animal Rescue is honored to have been chosen by Mary E. Griswold Elementary School as the recipient of the proceeds from this wonderful event. This event provided the students the opportunity to expand their horizons through reading and help animals in need,” shared WOFAR Director Kathy Williams. “We hope to provide the school with an opportunity to visit in the near future to show our appreciation. ‘Model’ student struts nonprofit catwalk By Dr. Michele Imossi Berlin High School sophomore Hannah Lavoie made her modeling debut at the CCARC 10th Annual Fashion Show event, Toast to Fashion! Close to 300 people attended the fundraiser, held March 20 at St. George Church in New Britain. CCARC is a non-profit agency that supports people with disabilities throughout Central Connecticut. Lavoie learned of CCARC through her involvement in the BHS Interact Club. Interact students have volunteered at CCARC dances and sporting events, which prompted Anne Ruwet, the agency’s CEO, to come visit the club. Ruwet gave the students some insight into the organization, explaining that CCARC was founded in 1952 by parents who wanted more for their disabled children. CCARC has grown tremendously and now offers an array of opportunities for independence and personal growth for people with disabilities. Before leaving, Ruwet solicited the group of students for a model for CCARC’s upcoming fashion show since they were short one “local celebrity” for their big fundraiser. Lavoie was quick to volunteer, as modeling was something she always wanted to try, and

Anne Ruwet, Chief Executive Officer of CCARC, and Harry Sitilides, owner of Connecticut Furs, Inc. of New Britain, introduce Berlin High School sophomore Hannah Lavoie as she models a formal gown from Stylish Impressions of Farmington and a fur coat from Connecticut Furs at the CCARC Annual Fashion Show and Auction. this would give her a chance to fulfill one of her own aspirations while helping others fulfill theirs. Lavoie appeared a natural as she received repeated rounds of applause each time she came out in a new ensemble. In an interesting twist of fate, Lavoie will be traveling to Milan, Italy over the summer as part of a Rotary Summer Youth Exchange Program. So if she wants to continue to dabble in modeling, she will conveniently be living in one of the world’s leading fashion capitals.
