On Tuesday, April 4 the Town Council agreed to appropriate $4 million to cover two more years of the town’s road improvement program. The program covers the planning and construction of paving, curbSee Roads, A3

KENSINGTON — Rita (Fagan) Powers, 94, of Kensington, and Niantic, beloved wife of David N. Powers, went to her eternal resting place on Mond a y, A p r i l 3, 2017, at her home in Niantic. Bor n on Oct. 26, 1922, to William and Emma (Stiquel) Fagan, she graduated from Berlin High School where she coined the moniker “Berlin Redcoats”, and received her bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s College. She married the love of her life, Dave in 1948, having met at a Lewis High School football game where she was a teacher. Rita and Dave loved to travel between their homes in Kensington, and Niantic, and argue about their favorite baseball teams, the New York Yankees (Rita) and the Boston Red Sox (Dave). She was a masterful cook who could easily expand a Sunday roast dinner from six to 16 with no prior notice. As matriarch of the Powers Clan, Rita devoted her life to her husband and sons, the Town of Berlin Registrar of Voters office, tennis, bowling, sailing, fishing (where she routinely bested her die-hard brother Dick and husband Dave), and most of all playing cards where her “take no prisoners” attitude ruled. Rita is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, David; and seven sons, David Jr., and Kathy (Bagley)

Braglia said the transition from the current location on Webster Square Road to the new site will start next month. A grand opening celebration is expected as early as June, depending on weather conditions.
Once completed, the 29,000-square-foot building will be the largest Acura dealership in the state. “I’m thrilled,” said Chris Edge, Berlin’s economic development director.“The location can help us further develop in the area.” The dealership will feature expanded auto service and a bigger showroom. Braglia said up to 12 employees will be added. New features include a sys-

The retail building next door is expected to have more than one tenant. Edge thinks a sandwich shop or some other kind of eatery would be a good fit. Entry to the dealership and retail building will be off Berlin Turnpike, as well as Episcopal Road.

Midstate Chamber holds annual meeting By Lauren Takores Record-Journal staff
MERIDEN — The Midstate Chamber of Commerce drew nearly 300 people Tuesday evening, April 4 to its meeting and awards dinner at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington, celebrating the past year. The chamber is close to having 600 members, Chairman Richard J. Pendred said, and the goal is to hit 650 this year. Its region covers Meriden, Berlin, Cheshire, Southington and Wallingford. “Participation in our chamber is evident,” Pendred said. “Our members are engaged and showing up and connecting with each other.” After members completed meeting business, including the election of directors and officers, Pendred and Pres-
Kathy Carroll, left, Michelle Kline and Dana Acabbo enjoy a drink during the 121st Midstate Chamber of Commerce annual meeting held at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville on April 4.
ident Sean W. Moore gave their remarks as dinner was served. “We like to be transformational” rather than transactional, Moore said, meaning the chamber’s concentration is on growing and maintaining membership. After dinner and silent auc-
tion bidding concluded, the awards program began. Three local restaurants, Nina’s Café, Eben-Ezer Restaurant and Café Dolce, each won the William Sears Rice Awards for their dedication to downtown Meriden. Mayor Kevin Scarpati presented the awards.

Cliff Carlson, retired vice-president of operations at Hunter’s Ambulance, received a community partnership award. Brian Cyr, Maloney High School music teacher, received an excellence in education award. Ulbrich Stainless Steel, Boscov’s Department Store and Suzio Insurance Center each
won a business leadership award. O&G Industries won an innovation award for its PlattBuilds program. Sponsors included the Record-Journal, Eversource; Flublok by Protein Sciences, Suzio Insurance Center, TD Bank, Ulbrich Steel and several others.
