from the new Berlin train station. “Continuing to build off the success of the busway makes sense,” Edge said. As part of the transit-oriented study, Berlin has been looking at housing options to attract millennials and empty-nesters into town. Edge said the town could mirror New Britain’s Columbus Commons housing units, to be located in the spot of the city’s old police station. “Mixed-use seems to make the most sense,” Edge said.

The Central CT group is hoping the cradle-to-career pipeline project will also aid in keeping millennials and younger generations in town. The pipeline will give access to career pathways in schools which would connect to colleges and the work force.

In Berlin, manufacturing businesses are in need of new talent which Edge said could be more accessible with the innovation project.

Local family hopes to raise awareness about autism By Ashley Kus Citizen staff

Over $1,500 was raised recently at a family fundraiser to benefit the Autism Speaks walk. “We want to get the research out there,” said Kim Kelly.

A fundraiser for the Autism Speaks walk was held at The Italian Club on May 21. | Beverly Ruggiero, Contributed

The Berlin resident’s 6-year-old Brianna Kelly daughter, Brianna, was diagnosed with autism nearly four years ago. The elementary school student is on the severe spectrum and is non-verbal. Kelly said it was the first fundraiser for “Team Brianna” that her family has held. The event took place two weeks ago at the Italian Club

in Berlin with a turnout of over 100 people. Berlin High School students from the Upbeat program provided face painting and balloon animals. Kids also enjoyed a bounce house and magician. Proceeds go to the walk on Sunday, June 4 at Rentschler Field for Autism Speaks, an advocacy organization that sponsors research and awareness. The walk works to fund further research and support autism services. “I want to know why this is happening to so many kids,” Kelly said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that autism could occur in one out of every 68 children. “We’re thankful to everyone who donated,” Kelly said. She hopes to continue the fundraiser every year. akus@record-journal.com 203-317-2448 Twitter: @KusReporter

Berlin police to serve pizza to benefit DARE program Officers will be taking over the wait staff at Central Pizza on Mill Street as part of the annual Tip-a-Cop fundraiser. “We’re serving the public in a different way,” said Berlin Detective Theodore Fuini. The event starts at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6 with tip donations being used to help fund a trip to the international Drug Abuse Resistance Education Conference in Texas. The DARE program is used nationwide to teach kids how to live free of substance abuse and other dangerous

Fuini is the Berlin department’s DARE coordinator with four DARE officers assigned to the three elementary schools and two private schools in town. The program is funded solely through donations. For the last four years, the Tip-a-Cop fundraiser has been able to send two officers to the DARE conference in July. “We’re looking forward to another successful year,” said George Bikakis, son of Central Pizza’s owner. Bikakis, of Berlin, went through the DARE program as a child and is now a teacher at Dag Hammarskjold Middle School in Wallingford.

The upcoming fundraiser will let the officers take people’s orders and deliver the food. At the end of the meal, customers will have the option of giving an additional tip to the officers. Central Pizza also has a donation jar for the DARE program. Last year, Berlin officers were able to raise over $2,000. It cost about $1,500 to send two officers to the training conference. “It’s definitely an undertaking,” Fuini said. “We’re really trying to keep the program current.”

Gardener speaks at library on biodiverse ecosystems By Barbara Helming Special to The Citizen

More than 20 people gathered at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library Thursday, May 25, for a lecture on creating a biodiverse ecosystem in one’s backyard. Kensington Congregational Church, 312 Percival Ave., has scheduled its fourth annual Festival on the Hill, a Lobster Roll/Strawberry Shortcake Festival, for Saturday, June 10, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine. The event begins at 8:30 a.m., with the 5K Lobster Loop road race.

Mae is an exotic, young mother cat. She is a stunning torbie; a combination of brown tabby and tortoise shell. Mae is very affectionate and playful and enjoys hugs and kisses. Barbie is a lovely little tuxedo. She is quiet and gentle. It’s obvious that she had a rough start by the scar in her eye from an untreated infection. She prefers her foster father over anyone else in her foster family. Barbie also loves other cats. Visit www.hucatrescue.org or call 860-479-5173 or email hucatrescue.org.

Animals group schedules volunteer meeting Friends of Berlin Animal Control has scheduled an informational volunteer meeting for Wednesday, June 14, 6:30 p.m., at the Commu-

nity Center, 240 Kensington Road. Volunteers are needed to work with the organization, the animals, the cats at PetSmart, the low cost

spay clinics, fundraising and more. For more information, call 860-828-5287.

and sending high schoolers on a week-long mission work camp. The event features food (including lobster rolls, strawberry shortcake and more), live music, family entertainment, civic organizations, school groups, artisans and vendors. Free parking, with shuttle service from Berlin Town Hall and the Knights of Columbus building, 143 Percival Ave. For more information, visit http:// www.kensingtoncong.org/.

Rudy said it is all about the kids. “They did a great job with all the community service,” he said. The Upbeat program gives Berlin High School students the opportunity to lead their peers and participate in community projects. Upbeat is divided into 15 “houses,” one for each community service theme. Zoe Zimber and Theo Reed, seniors and house coordinators, were given the Lions Youth Services Award last Thursday night for their commitment to the program for the last four years. Zimber and Reed, along with senior coordinators Bridgette Fox,

Kara Boninsegna and Haley Hauptfeld will be leaving big shoes to fill next year. Their successors, five juniors, hope to keep the momentum while adding their own spin. “We want to bring more school spirit,” said Sarah Crabtree, future coordinator of the sports and health house. Hetal Patel added that they “want to make sure Upbeat has a strong foundation.” Crabtree and Patel will each have three houses to manage along with fellow coordinators Jimmy Christodlous, Morgan O’Connor and Jimmy Wicander. The juniors went through an application process and interviews to receive their new

positions. They chose their houses recently. The picnic also honored, and surprised, former town manager Denise McNair with the Peronace Volunteer Appreciation Award. The award is in memory of Richard Peronace who was part of the founding of Upbeat decades ago. “Denise has always been there for our youth and the kids,” said Mitchell, the former Upbeat director. With graduation less than a month away, the juniors said they feel ready to take on the leadership roles as the seniors leave. “They prepped us the best they could,” O’Connor said. “So now we know what to do.”

Kensington Fire Department members Tyler Jones, J.J. Moss and Jordan Temple were on hand at the picnic. The ladder on a Berlin firetruck was extended for the occasion.

Game Recap by Cody Jennette The Bees began the week in the middle of their Pennsylvania road trip, visiting York for a 4 game set. New Britain won the first 3 games of the series, and then the fourth was postponed due to rain, which made those 3 victories the Bees’ first sweep of the season. As a whole on the Pennsylvania road trip, New Britain hit a combined 80 hits through the 6 games, averaging 13.33 hits per game. They set a franchise record in hits per game with 18 on Monday, and then tied it with 18 hits on Wednesday. The Bees then came home to host Southern Maryland in a brief 4 game weekend series. On Sunday, Jovan Rosa played in his 200th consecutive game (including postseason), and finished it with a walkoff single in the 10th inning to give the Bees the win over the Blue Crabs. The Bees will now begin another road trip to Bridgeport, and then Southern Maryland.

EAST HARTFORD (AP) — Teachers, students and parents have gathered outside a Connecticut high school to protest U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos calling the school a “dangerous day care.” Demonstrators outside East Hartford High School on Tuesday said DeVos was wrong about the school. Connecticut Democratic U.S. Rep. John Larson and Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy also

spoke out against DeVos’ comments. DeVos last week quoted a former student saying the school was “nothing more than adult day care ... a dangerous day care.” The remarks came during testimony before a congressional subcommittee about what DeVos called the failure of public schools and the need for more school choice. A U.S. Education Department spokeswoman says DeVos testified about how many students need educational options and did not generalize about the high school’s student body. CROSSWORD ANSWER
