Valedictorian embraces new beginnings

All-night grad party planned Berlin High School seniors will get to celebrate their graduation this month with a party at the Groton submarine base, thanks to community donations and fundraisers throughout the school year. “The town came together and the school has been so supportive,” said Deborah Reed, co-chairwoman of the all-night graduation party committee. “It’s a wonderful experience.”

Valedictorian Jessica Jha is looking toward the future as she prepares to leave Berlin High School and attend Northeastern University in Boston in the fall.

The committee held several events to raise nearly $35,000 for the party. The fundraisers included pie and butter braid sales, two clothing drives, local restaurant give-back nights, and Mr. BHS.

“Everything we’ve known is coming to an end,” she said. “People should really embrace new beginnings.” The valedictorian enjoyed her time in high school from her many advanced place-

“It really is student-inspired,” said Tara Gallagher, special education teacher and advisor of the club.

More than 20 students, both those with disabilities and general education students, will act in the first Berlin unified performance, called “Around the World.” Several skits and songs make up the production.

High school junior Marissa Pettinelli recruited students at the beginning of the year to join the club. “It’s a good opportunity,” Pettinelli said. “We’re all human, we’re all equal and we’re all the same.”

Pettinelli grew up attending unified theater productions in West Hartford where her mother is a special education teacher. West Hartford’s program inspired Pettinelli to start a similar club in Berlin. See Theater, A12

1. Make your home efficient as much as you can before getting solar quotes – For example: Changing an electric hot water heater to a heat pump hot water heater can save you $10,000 off a standard solar array and reduce your annual usage by over 3,000 kWh per year. (That’s about $600 with today’s Eversource rates) 2. If you pay taxes, do not lease solar. Solar leasing only benefits the leasing company, you can own solar with $0 down, pay less than you’re paying now and have it paid off in 10 years of less with no additional money out of your pocket.

3. Think about your household size and your usage. If you have a teenager going to college in a few years, you want to take that into consideration so you’re not oversizing your system.

4. Make sure you get the best panels and inverters available at the best price. Many solar companies use cheap panels made in China and the warranty doesn’t mean much. Companies like LG and Siemen’s make solar products and both are very stable companies.

ing, pool, pingpong, shuffleboard and swimming will also be on the agenda along with a breakfast buffet. “It’s set up like a little town,” Reed said. “It guarantees safety.”

The all-night parties started about 30 years ago to prevent underage drinking and offer a safe substance-free celebration for graduates. This will be the fifth year that Berlin will be hosting the party in Groton. In previous years the party was held at the high school, but the

committee had to find a new venue due to the renovation project. Reed said the submarine base will likely be used next year for the party as well,

though it is ultimately up to the next committee. Over 40 volunteers helped make the class of 2017’s party possible. “It’s fantastic,” Reed said. “It’s

amazing that people are willing to support this safe night for kids.” akus@record-journal.com 203-317-2448 Twitter: @KusReporter

Fundraiser set for surgery for ‘brave boy’ By Ashley Kus Citizen staff

A Meriden man hopes an upcoming fundraiser at the Pine Loft Restaurant in Berlin will help a five-year-old boy living with a rare form of spina bifida. “He’s such a brave little boy,” said Steve Drumheller. The Meriden resident thought of the idea to host

a fundraiser for Oliver, the son of his former co-worker Amy Clavette, after learning that the boy will have to undergo his 16th surgery this summer. “It’s extremely humbling,” said Clavette, a New Britain resident. “I’m not one to ask for help.” The fundraiser will be at her son’s favorite pizza restaurant, the Pine Loft on the Berlin Turnpike. “It’s going to be a surprise for

him,” Clavette said. The event starts at 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, and goes until 9 p.m. A musician will perform on the restaurant stage and there will be costumed characters for kids like princesses and superheroes. Pizza and cake will be provided. Drumheller said several baskets and gift cards have been donated for a raffle. He said the goal would be to raise $1,000 from the event. “Any amount we get will help,” he said. Though the boy’s disease has left him in a wheelchair, Clavette said he is still always smiling. “It doesn’t stop him from doing anything,” she said. “He’s a happy kid.”

This will be the third straight summer that he will need a major surgery. Clavette said she is excited to see his reaction to the fundraiser.

Aresimowicz: GOP squandering chances By Mike Savino Record-Journal staff

he would back off his pledge to take a more bipartisan approach to managing the chamber, though. “I’ve never wanted to get away from it, because I believe it’s the right thing, but at some point I have to protect my caucus,” he said during a press availability prior to Friday’s session. Aresimowicz’s complaint came after Democrats adjourned the House earlier than expected Thursday, June 1 prompting speculation that an inability to get support of tolls and other controversial bills led to the decision. House Majority Leader Matt Ritter, D-Hartford, who also attends Aresimowicz’s daily press briefings, denied the theory, but acknowledged the decision was partly out of frustration in dealing with House Republicans. In particular, he said Republicans voting in unison against a deficit mitigation plan, despite having a role in negotiating a deal that got unanimous support in the Senate, is one of the “signals that make me worried” they’re focusing more on politics. House Minority Leader Themis Klarides, R-Debry, characterized the complaint as disingenuous. She also said political posturing and a fo-

cus on the next election just comes with the territory. “Of course we all want to be in the majority, of course we all want to have a governor of our party,” she said. “Of course we do, or else we wouldn’t run on a party line.” She also stood by her contention that Democrats are struggling to secure the votes for controversial legislation, and said Aresimowicz’s comments were just an effort to “blame somebody else.” Aresimowicz, though, said his comments come out of frustration that Republicans, as the minority party, can vote against legislation but still benefit from it. Democrats, including Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, have accused Republicans of this when they complain about the level of state borrowing but celebrate projects that receive bonding. “It’s hard for me right now to go out there and ask the majority leaders to run bills that will allow people to move forward their proposals and their goals, while my caucus continues to sacrifice and sacrifice things they care about for the greater good of the state, but there’s not the same accountability on the other side,” he said. He also expressed frustration that Klarides told report-

Klarides said Republicans, who hold a tie in the Senate and have only a seven-seat deficit in the House, represent almost half the state’s residents and thus should be a part of negotiations. “It’s not a gift to me, it’s not a favor to me — you’re not giving me a juice box and an apple and saying have a nice day,” she said. msavino@record-journal.com 203-317-2266 Twitter: @reporter_savino

In exchange for more than $1.5 billion in concessions over the next two years, Malloy’s budget office has agreed to extend the agreement for five years to 2027. OPINION

Why Berlin Youth Football & Cheer? There’s a reason why men speak of their Berlin football playing days with such passion, exuberance and affection. There’s a reason why women who’ve cheered for Berlin can name exactly who was on their squad, in third grade, 20 years later. It’s family, plain and simple. In this league it’s the impetus of everything we say, coach and demonstrate – on and off the field. In football every athlete on that field plays an integral part of the game, from the quarterback to the linemen in the trenches. In cheerleading every girl relies on one another to move in symmetry, ensure each other’s safety while performing stunts, flips, handsprings; all to energize the crowd and support their team. I had the privilege of wearing a Berlin football uniform for 11 years. From 1987 to 1998 (7 to 18 years old) I got to play the greatest sport on earth for many fathers of my classmates. We started on Willard’s field back when I was in second grade. Equipment was shoddy at best and the league was in its infancy. Eventually, we made our way over to Sage for practices, but the nice turf field was not in the stars for us. It was more like mud pit practices in the softball fields. I truly miss those days. Many of my first year teammates went on to play with

me all the way through our senior year at BHS – all four co-captains (myself included) were Berlin Bears at very young ages. It encourages me now that many of my teammates, who I’ve never really lost contact with, are starting to show up at Sage on Saturday mornings with their sons ready to sign up for football. It doesn’t surprise me though, as our wonderful town has a way of drawing people back to it. Our board consists of a lot of former football players and cheerleaders. They volunteer their time to organize registrations, ensure safety precautions are followed and equipment is maintained to facilitate a safe and positive environment for our boys and girls. They meet monthly to keep abreast of any pertinent issues and to exchange ideas on how to improve the league. Most board members are also coaches, who devote countless hours towards the league pouring their blood, sweat and tears into our young up and comers. It’s truly a labor of love. Personally speaking, I went from anticipating holding a bag to being a head coach my first year. Without question one of the biggest joys of my life is watching young players learn to work as a team. Win with honor, lose with dignity and foster relationships that I hope continue for them decades beyond their playing days. Travelers enjoy a break with food and beverages provided by Berlin Boy Scout Troop 24 at the rest stop on I-91 north in Middletown.

Travelers on I-91 north Friday, May 26 may have noticed an interesting site at the rest stop near exit 19. In a traditional outfit, Bill Cink, of Berlin, was playing bagpipes at the rest stop located in Middletown near the Meriden line. Dinner and Movie Night for Saturday, June 24, 5:30 p.m., at Bethany Covenant Church, 785 Mill St. A fee is charged. A pasta dinner, followed by “The Sting” is planned. Free child care provided. Proceeds benefit the mobile packing event, scheduled for spring of 2018. For more information and tickets, contact Linda at 860-919-3843.

Hospital volunteer opportunities The Hospital of Central Connecticut offers a variety of

volunteer opportunities. Several departments are in need of volunteers at their reception desks. Volunteers are also needed at the main desk to provide escorting and guiding services as well as wheelchair assistance to those entering the hospital or in the Delphi clinic area. Volunteers that have a certified pet therapy dog are welcome. Pet visits provide comfort and support to patients who otherwise may have no visitors or may feel lonely and isolated in a hospital setting. Research shows these visits

can reduce anxiety, loneliness and blood pressure and may help motivate withdrawn patients to cooperate in their treatment. Patient Advocate volunteers provide friendly visits to all inpatients to ensure their experience is positive, care is exceptional and to promote a high level of customer satisfaction. This past week, the Bees made stops to face their in-state rival in Bridgeport and then traveled to Waldorf, Maryland to face the Blue Crabs. The week has seen several roster moves and pitching milestones reached as the Bees flipped the calendar from May to June. Bees shortstop Steve Carrillo had his contract purchased by Saraperos de Saltillo (Mexican League) on Friday. On the rubber, Nate Roe earned his first 2 wins of the season, both coming in extra inning contests against the Blue Crabs, and Kyle Simon pitched 9 innings on Sunday, tying the longest outing in Bees history that he set on June 22nd last year. At the plate, the Bees have slugged 6 homers this week, 2 by Michael Crouse. The Bees return home this week for a 6 game home stand beginning Tuesday night, hosting Long Island and Somerset.

ing the Civilian Conservation Corps, these young men would have have been homeless or a financial burden to their families. The public is invited to hear more about the program that helped create our state parks and forests. We’ll also hear excerpts from oral histories telling how recruits remember their CCC experience as the best of times during the worst of times. Join us at Berlin Historical Society Museum, 305 Main St., Kensington on Tuesday, June 20 at 7 p.m. to view a slide show and presentation by Marty Podskoch, author of “Connecticut Civilian Conservation Corps Camps:

Their History, Memories and Legacy.” Books will be available for sale and signing. The museum will be open for viewing and refreshments will be served. The program is free, but please call the museum at 860-828-5114 to register, as seating is limited. From 1933 to 1942, approximately 2.5 million unskilled young men were housed in rustic camps nationwide and put to work planting 3 billion trees, constructing more than 800 parks, fighting forest fires, building trails, service buildings and forest roads. In the nine years the program operated, 2.5 million workers participated. Their enduring legacy is the forests and parks we still enjoy today.

books. Two are about the CCC. After moving to East Hampton, Conn. he began interviewing men who were a part of this program in Connecticut. His book draws on the oral histories and signature projects of the 21 camps located throughout the state.

Besides the Story Share series and the Berlin Fair displays, we are most happy to share news that local history is again part of the public school curriculum. To bring that history to life, we have been hosting programming and tours for all second grade students. They learn what going to school was like back in their grandparents’ day, tour exhibits emphasizing Berlin innovators, and learn about the Yankee Peddler, our town symbol. Many recognize the peddler as “the guy on our recycling cans,” but have no idea how important he was to our town and the country. The students also experience what it was like to be an apprentice in a tin shop.

If you have ever been to American Legion State Forest, Natchaug Forest, Shade Swamp, Peoples Forest, Chatfield Hollow or other parks, you may have noticed old stone and wood buildings, look-out towers, ponds and shelters still standing at these and other forests. Some of these structures are on the National Register of Historic Places. You might also want to visit the CCC Museum at Shenipsit State Forest in Stafford where an old bunk house showcases memorabilia from the days it housed those hard-working young men. The Berlin Historical Society program and others are made possible by donations in memory of Dan Benja-
