Aresimowicz: ‘It’s OK to say you failed sometimes’ By Mike Savino Record-Journal staff
Though pleased with many of his own procedural changes in his first year as state House speaker, Rep. Joe Aresimowicz considers it a failure that he wasn’t able to get a budget in place before the current fiscal year began July 1. See Aresimowicz, A8

“In their line of duty they need to be active,” Capizzi said. “They need to have strength and endurance.” A grand prize will be awarded to an overall winner determined by a post-challenge fitness assessment. “This was the perfect push I needed to get back into shape,” said Ryan Gould, a traffic officer. “I think physical fitness is something that cops need.” A recent workout consisted of squats while throwing a weighted medicine ball at the wall followed by lifting dumbbells. “With the high intensity workouts you’re picking stuff up, you’re carrying them, you’re strengthening your muscles, and you’re working muscle endurance,” Capizzi said.
Gould said officers often have to carry around vests and gear weighing up to 50 pounds. He said the weight training could help make that task easier and more efficient. The challenge also provided participants with meal plans and tips to become healthier. The program is partially funded by the department as well as community donations to the “Shoulder to Shoulder” program. Ciuci said another challenge is being planned for fall or winter.

>> Aresimowicz From A1
The lack of a budget means Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is running government through an executive order filled with deep cuts, leaving municipalities, businesses and citizens in limbo. “Did I fail? Yeah I failed,” said Aresimowicz, D-Berlin. “It’s OK to say you failed sometimes, as long as you’re learning.” Aresimowicz, whose district also covers part of Southington, said there’s plenty of blame to go around, including past elected officials, but that he should shoulder a larger share because of his leadership role. He compared it to being a coach, a role he fills for Berlin High School’s football team.
“I don’t think it’s fair to criticize or put all the blame on Joe,” said Rep. Vincent Candelora, Aresimowicz R-North Branford, and deputy minority leader in the House. He credited Aresimowicz with getting the House Democrats to present a budget proposal, for example.
wicz’s responsibility is to bring the caucus together on a plan they can support, not to coerce them into a position, and then negotiate with Malloy and Republican leaders.
Candelora, who represents a part of Wallingford, also criticized Malloy for “summarily rejecting” all proposals without doing more to reach a compromise.
The most public display has been his morning press conferences prior to the start of each day of the session, a practice he intends to continue. House Democrats said he has also improved the legislative process in other ways, including more dialogue with rank-and-file members.
Democrats, meanwhile, defended Aresimowicz. “I’ll tell you, everybody has very different opinions of where we should go and what we should invest in,” said Rep. Mary Mushinsky, D-Wallingford.
“Kids win the game and coaches lose the game,” he said. Others in the House aren’t as critical.
Mushinsky said Aresimo-
“He has an unflappable personality, and that’s a good thing when you have to negotiate,” she said. Lawmakers on both sides said Aresimowicz has improved bipartisanship and transparency.
“As challenging as this session has been, I think Joe has done a good job engaging the caucus,” Rep. Cathy Abercrombie, D-Meriden,

“I have to say, compared to any other speaker — in my 12 years being here, I don’t think we’ve had a speaker like Joe,” Candelora said, calling him a “consensus builder.” He said Aresimowicz’s openness means Republicans are able to make technical changes, even on bills they oppose, to avoid unintended consequences.
“I, like many others, look at (Washington) D.C. with frustration,” he said. “Why can’t they just act in the best interest of the taxpayer? Why does it always have to be Democrat versus Republican?” 58437-01

Other changes include starting House sessions on time and working to avoid votes on legislation occurring after midnight.
While the tight margins in the House — Democrats hold only a seven-seat majority — can force more bipartisanship, Aresimowicz was pledging to improve relations even before November’s elections.

Candelora, whose post within his own party puts him in a position to negotiate with House Democratic leaders, said Aresimowicz has also fostered a better working relationship with the minority party.
His style has drawn praise from other Republicans, including Minority Leader Themis Klarides, R-Derby, who couldn’t be reached for comment for this story but credited Aresimowicz after the session with being more bipartisan, and Rep. Richard Smith, R-New Fairfield, who rose on the last day to compliment him on the House floor.

said, crediting Aresimowicz with having more frequent and open caucus meetings than past speakers.
Aresimowicz is willing to engage his critics. He sometimes responds to criticisms aimed at him in Facebook forums for residents of Berlin and Southington. “I accept the responsibility that at times I’m going to
have to challenge some of the notions that are around this state,” he said. Aresimowicz has at times criticized Republicans and private citizens with presenting an outlook of Connecticut that he views as pessimistic, saying it will eventually become self-fulfilling. “I’m not going to let people’s opinions or claims of ‘doom and gloom’ go unchallenged,” he said. He’s also aware of the criticism he receives working as an education coordinator for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees at a time when the state is seeking concessions from its employee unions. The Office of State Ethics has said he has no conflict of interest. Abercrombie also defended Aresimowicz, saying his role actually provides some insight to the caucus that few others have at a time when employee compensation is a hot-button issue. “I don’t know about unions. I’ve never worked for a union,” she said. While Aresimowicz is happy with the changes he made in his first session, he believes he could have done a better job balancing his work and personal life to free up more time with lawmakers, particularly committee chairs. Candelora’s biggest criticism of Aresimowicz was the fact that Rep. Melissa Ziobran, R-East Haddam, was shut out of budget negotiations within the Appropriations Committee, despite being ranking member. Aresimowicz said he corrected that once he learned of the situation, but he also understands concerns from his members about negotiating with Republicans who appeared opposed to adopting the committee’s proposal. msavino@record-journal.com 203-317-2266 Twitter: @reporter_savino

Tom grew up in New Britain and said the reunion started there. “In the last 25 years, anywhere from 50 to 150 family members have attended.” He expected between 60 and 120 relatives at this year’s gathering, including Lena Capodice, his 99-year-old aunt.
Capodice’s brother is 97, and their brother, Tom’s father, is 93. The youngest relative expected at this year’s reunion was Hallie Young, who is three weeks old. The D’Amato family reunion features a cookout and many attendees play bingo. This year, t-shirts were made for the family members. The D’Amato family is huge, to say the least. “My grandparents had 14 children, 48 grandchildren and 115 great grandchildren,” Tom said, “and we’re still growing.” MEDIA THAT MOVES >>

by a fungus which kills the gypsy moths. Kirby Stafford, a state entomologist with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, said the drought over the past two years suppressed the fungus and allowed the gypsy moth population to grow. The rain this year has helped spread the fungus, which resides in the soil. “This will definitely set the population back,” he said. Stafford said he’s among those in central and eastern Connecticut who have had caterpillars eating their tree leaves. “I would hate to think what would happen if we had a third year of a drought,” he said.
“You hear them at night, munching and pooping,” McAviney said. Stafford said the caterpillars are voracious eaters, even devouring the needles on coniferous trees if they can’t get their preferred oak leaves.
Portions of eastern Connecticut were particularly hard hit. “If you drive along (Interstate) 395, you’ll drive along big expanses that look like winter,” Stafford said. Based on surveys last year, state officials knew the infestation would be severe this year. Once people notice their trees covered in caterpillars, there’s little to be done.

Berlin’s Marzi signed by Twins
MEETING ‘THE MAN’
NEW BRITAIN — New Britain Bees team officials announced that starting pitcher Anthony Marzi had his contract purchased by the Minnesota Twins organization. He was to report to Single-A Cedar Rapids of the Midwest League. “We are very excited for Anthony,” said Bees Manager Stan Cliburn. “He has worked very hard, and certainly deserves this opportunity. We wish him the very best with the Twins organization.”
A native of Berlin, Marzi joined the Bees prior to the 2016 season on a tryout, making the team out of spring training. During the Bees’ 2016 season, Marzi made his first career start and registered a 23.1 scoreless inning streak, the longest in Bees history. This season, Marzi made 12 starts, leading the Bees with five wins and an earned run average of 2.84, good for sixth in the Atlantic League. Marzi registered the second nine inning shutout in Bees history, and the only one to date in the Atlan-
tic League this season, on June 14th against the York Revolution. In his final start for New Britain, Marzi tallied his 100th professional strikeout. This will be the second stint in affiliated baseball for Marzi, who signed with the New York Yankees in 2015 and appeared in six games for the Gulf Coast Yankees. The former UConn baseball captain departs New Britain with a career 10-6 record, a 2.94 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 147 innings pitched for the Bees.

Last week, the Bees began the second half of their season with three games at home against Somerset, and three games on the road in Bridgeport. They head into the All-Star break with a 3-3 record in the second half. This past week saw the selection of New Britain’s All-Stars, as well as a historic franchise milestone being reached. Five total Bees players were named to the Atlantic League AllStar game, and four will attend: Anthony Marzi, Conor Bierfeldt, Michael Crouse, Jovan Rosa, and Nate Roe. Marzi received his All-Star recognition prior to his contract purchase by the Minnesota Twins, so he will not be attending. Rosa is the first player in Bees franchise history to be named an All-Star twice. On Saturday night in Bridgeport, the Bees earned their 100th win in franchise history with a 7-6 come from behind victory over the Bluefish. The 2017 Atlantic League All-Star game will be played on Wednesday, July 12th. The Bees will be back in action at New Britain Stadium on Friday, July 14th on Fat Tire Friday and Foul Pole Friday to begin a three game weekend series against Southern Maryland. There will be postgame fireworks after the game on Saturday, and Sunday is Schaller Hardware City Family Fun-Day. Fans can get autographs before the game, and kids can run the bases after the game.

luck ran out. Said Berlin team manager Michelle Wieczorek: “These girls have been playing together since they were in instruction league. They are very supportive of one another, even calling a time out to stop the game to run over and support one another after a missed play. In our game against Meriden one of the girls on Meriden was injured. Immediately after the game our girls lined up and waited for her to come off the ambulance so they could tell her good game. These are the type of girls they are. Berlin should be very proud of how they represented the town. Our coaches Mike Bannon and Robyn Cop are really top notch; you can’t get any better.”
Research shows these visits can reduce anxiety, loneliness and blood pressure and may help motivate withdrawn patients to cooperate in their treatment. Patient Advocate volunteers provide friendly visits to all inpatients to ensure their experience is positive, care is exceptional and to promote a high level of customer satisfaction.
