Renovations at Zipadelli Field in Sage Park are moving forward this month, along with a name change to a field across town.
The 69th annual Berlin Fair will be held in the middle of fair season next month with an extra day to kick off festivities.
“We don’t want to have a sub-par field for our baseball players,” Mayor Mark Kaczynski said.
The fair will begin Thursday, Sept. 14, the week after the Durham Fair, and will no longer be the last fall fair in the state. The Lions Club decided to change the date due to a history of bad weather and the opportunity for new rides and amusement. “I wish them luck,” said Mayor Mark Kaczynski. “It’s always a fun time down there.” Though the fair doesn’t begin until Friday, Sept. 15, a special Fair Fest will be held Thursday, Sept. 14, at 5 p.m., at the pavilion stage. The Town Council agreed at a recent meeting on a $98,000 appropriation for the renovation of Zipadelli Field. The infield will be renovated for the first time in 20 years due to safety concerns. Areas of the outfield will also be reconstructed. “We’re waiting until the end of playing season,” said Jack Healy, the interim town manager. He said the grass is expected to begin growing in the fall to complete the project. A total of $70,000 was budgeted for the work. Finance Director Kevin Delaney said bids came in higher than
