Extra day in store for Berlin Fair

Renovations at Zipadelli Field in Sage Park are moving forward this month, along with a name change to a field across town.

The 69th annual Berlin Fair will be held in the middle of fair season next month with an extra day to kick off festivities.

“We don’t want to have a sub-par field for our baseball players,” Mayor Mark Kaczynski said.

The fair will begin Thursday, Sept. 14, the week after the Durham Fair, and will no longer be the last fall fair in the state. The Lions Club decided to change the date due to a history of bad weather and the opportunity for new rides and amusement. “I wish them luck,” said Mayor Mark Kaczynski. “It’s always a fun time down there.” Though the fair doesn’t begin until Friday, Sept. 15, a special Fair Fest will be held Thursday, Sept. 14, at 5 p.m., at the pavilion stage. The Town Council agreed at a recent meeting on a $98,000 appropriation for the renovation of Zipadelli Field. The infield will be renovated for the first time in 20 years due to safety concerns. Areas of the outfield will also be reconstructed. “We’re waiting until the end of playing season,” said Jack Healy, the interim town manager. He said the grass is expected to begin growing in the fall to complete the project. A total of $70,000 was budgeted for the work. Finance Director Kevin Delaney said bids came in higher than

Next week, a solar eclipse will be visible over North America while some parts of the country will experience a rare total eclipse. Here are 11 things to know about the eclipse and tips for viewing the historic event.

The eclipse will be Monday, Aug. 21. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the earth and the sun and partially or fully blocks the sun. Viewers along a 70-mile wide path stretching across 14 states from Lincoln Beach, Oregon, to Charleston, South Carolina, will experience a total solar eclipse, according to NASA. The longest period when the moon completely blocks the sun from any given location along the path will be about 2 minutes and 40 seconds, according to NASA. The United States hasn’t experienced a total solar eclipse since 1979.

In Connecticut, the partial eclipse will begin about 1:30 p.m. and peak about 2:45 p.m., when two-thirds of the sun will be covered. The eclipse will conclude about 4 p.m. Connecticut hasn’t experienced a total solar eclipse since 1925, and will not see one until 2079. The sky might get darker, but people in this region will not experience the twilight effect that occurs during a total solar eclipse, according to Central Connecticut State University astronomy professor Kristine Larsen. It will be a global event. Everyone in North America plus parts of South America, Africa and Europe will see at least a partial solar eclipse. Safety first! NASA reminds viewers to wear eclipse glasses or use a filter when observing a solar eclipse. Regular sunglasses are not safe to use when viewing a solar eclipse. “At no time, will it be safe to look at the eclipse with just your eyes,” Larsen said. State and Berlin police also said they are constantly watching for prostitution. Berlin Deputy Police Chief John Klett said his department routinely watches for activity, particularly along the Berlin Turnpike, but rarely finds evidence of prostitution. “It’s pretty much an anomaly,” he said, adding the department also gets few complaints. Trooper Kelly Grant, a state police spokeswoman, said, meanwhile, that the agency has a Statewide Organized Crime Investigative Task Force that has made several busts in the last year, including raids of two massage parlors in Branford in June. The task force also aided two undercover operations in Norwalk since October and worked with the FBI on a two-day sting in Fairfield. Grant said the task force will assist local agencies that request aid for their own investigations. Tomasso Nature Park open for the season

Established in 1989, The Tomasso Nature Park was given to Plainville by Tomasso Brothers and was established as a wetland mitigation area for the wetland lost in the reconstruction and expansion of Robertson Airport. Johnny is a sweet boy that showed up in a back yard and refused to leave. He is missing a back foot, which the vet thinks is a birth defect, not an injury. He is unique and gets around just fine. MERIDEN — After decades on Colony Street, the Midstate Chamber of Commerce will move from its downtown office in September to an office building on the Meriden-Wallingford border. But the chamber will continue to have a downtown presence, officials said. An anonymous doctor donated Suite 203 in the Birchwood medical condominiums at 546 S. Broad St. to the nonprofit Meriden Economic Development Co., which in turn executed a long-term lease with the Midstate Chamber of Commerce, said chamber President Sean Moore. Medco will also have a presence in the new chamber offices. Medco’s board of directors approved the transaction last week, followed by a unanimous vote by the Midstate chamber’s board.

This past week was another week split between home and the road for the Bees. They played an abbreviated series against Sugar Land, with game 1 being postponed to a later date, and then headed out to York for a 4 game set against the Revolution. In the 6 games played, the Bees went 4-2 overall. CT native and UConn graduate Greg Nappo earned his second straight win of the season, having pitched 6 innings against York on Friday without allowing an earned run. Craig Maddox batted .500 in the 4 game set against York (7-14) with a double and 6 RBI. Jovan Rosa has an active 11 game hitting streak, and has recorded an RBI in 6 of his last 8 games. Nick Greenwood made his 100th career start on Sunday to conclude the week. The Bees have a full slate of home games this upcoming week, with one special exception. On Saturday, New Britain will play a home and home doubleheader against Bridgeport, with game 1 being hosted by the Bluefish and game 2 being in New Britain, with fireworks after the game. Ernest M. Marzec

MaryAnn (Pulaski) Creamer

BERLIN — Ernest M. Marzec, 91, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017. He was the son of the late Michael and Anna Marzec. Ernest is survived by his wife, Victoria (Sisti) Marzec. Ernest grew up in New Britain, before entering the U.S. Navy, and then relocated to Buffalo, N.Y. where he raised his family. Upon retirement, Ernest and Victoria returned back to East Berlin. To be closer to family, Ernest and Victoria moved to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He enjoyed building model boats and carpentry. Ernest was a gentle kind man whom everyone loved and gravitated toward. In addition to his wife, Ernest is survived by his children, Karen (John) MarzecSciolino and Michael (Katherine) Marzec. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Sciolino- Moore, Nicholas (Rachel) Sciolino, and Andrew (Katrin) Marzec; and his great-grandchildren, Scarlett Louise and Gemma Grace. Ernest also leaves behind his sister, Irene Marzec. He is predeceased by his brother, Alphonse Marzec. Forrest Machine, which is moving from Rocky Hill, has put up the steel and is now in the process of adding a roof and walls for its new 55,000 square foot aerospace manufacturing facility. Stick Village, the office/retail complex on Webster Square Road, has just seen the completion of Building 4, and so far three firms have grown within Berlin; one has come from out of town and one new business is located here. What a great planet we have, eh? It’s so good I can sit on my porch with my morning coffee, doing the crossword puzzle, and the trees are rustling in the breeze and the birds are singing, and I can say hi to Donald, my resident chipmunk, as he scampers around trying to decide whether or not to dig yet another entrance tunnel to his underground lair. And I can look at Ragged Mountain, where sometimes in the fall, if you squint, you can see tiny little people on the cliffs. And I can look up at the amazing flying sky, as Donovan Leitch once called it in a song. How many other planets offer all of this? None that I know of. And if that’s not good enough, here on Terra we enjoy another feature you won’t find on your average heavenly body. On Monday, Aug. 21, there’s going to be a total eclipse of the sun, see, and although we won’t get the full effect of it in this neck of the woods, many folks along what’s called the path of totality will. That 70-mile-wide path will stretch from sea to shining sea, from Lincoln Beach, Oregon; to Moncks Corner, South Carolina; darkening Casper, Wyoming; St. Joseph, Missouri; Carbondale, Illinois; Sparta, Tennessee; and a whole lot of other places, great and small, along the way. Darkness at noon will happen somewhere in western Nebraska as Diana lines herself up to precisely mask Apollo. The reason all this is going to happen is that the Earth has been favored with a moon that’s just the right size, and just the right distance from us, to just about perfectly block the sun.

That is, the sun is 400 times the size of the moon, but it also happens to be 400 times as far away, so the moon will cover the sun but not the sun’s corona, which scientists love to look at. What are the odds? Just as amazingly, the moon rotates on its axis at the same rate that it revolves around us, so that we never see its “dark side,” as experts in astronomy explain it. Again, what are the odds? Unimaginably long, if you ask me. But to contemplate that, you might want to consult some experts in theology. Anyway, Connecticut won’t be left entirely in the light. If the weather cooperates, we’ll see a partial eclipse between 1:30 and 4:00 p.m. Clouds or no clouds, we’ll notice that something’s not quite right when about two-thirds of the sun is covered at the peak of the eclipse, around 2:45. And that ain’t hay. Connecticut hasn’t experienced a total solar eclipse since 1925, and won’t see one again until 2079. I’ll pencil it in on my calendar. Important warnings: NASA reminds viewers to wear eclipse glasses or use a filter when observing a solar eclipse! Regular sunglasses are not safe! Viewing a solar eclipse without such protection can cause permanent eye damage! Binoculars or a telescope offer no protection! Fortunately, the eclipse will be streamed live at www.nasa. gov/eclipselive and you will be directed by default to the NASA TV broadcast, Eclipse Across America, which will start at noon EDT. Thoughts on patriotism To the editor: President Roosevelt once said that “Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, to the degree in which he, himself, stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him in so far as he efficiently serves the county. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the county. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to the tell the truth, whether about the president or anyone else.”

Tyler Cop Foundation hosts charity tourneys By Ajlal N. Khan Special to The Citizen

The Tyler Cop Foundation hosted its first annual tennis and basketball tournaments this past weekend, and the turnout was impressive. Many Berlin residents gathered to honor the memory of Cop and to raise money for the foundation which bears his name. Cop, a beloved member of the Berlin community, passed away tragically in 2015 at the age of 15. “He was a big athlete and very competitive. That’s why we like to do a lot of sports things to remember him,” said Jon Trevathan, Cop’s cousin, and a member of the Berlin High School tennis team. The tennis and basketball tournaments kicked off early Saturday morning, Aug. 12 and lasted well into the evening. Play resumed on Aug. 13.

The 7th Annual Ryan T. Lee Golf Classic was held Friday, Aug. 4 at Timberlin Golf Course. The Classic features 18 holes of golf followed by a banquet dinner at the Aqua Turf in Southington. Hospital volunteer opportunities available The Hospital of Central Connecticut offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. Several departments are in need of volunteers at their reception desks. Volunteers are also needed at the main desk to provide escorting and guiding services as well as wheelchair assistance to those entering the hospital or in the Delphi clinic area.

Volunteers that have a certified pet therapy dog are welcome. Pet visits provide comfort and support to patients who otherwise may have no visitors or may feel lonely and isolated in a hospital setting. Research shows these visits can reduce anxiety, loneliness and blood pressure and may help motivate withdrawn patients to
