First day at fully renovated high school By Ashley Kus Citizen staff

Buses rolled down the driveway of Berlin High School Wednesday morning, Aug. 30, as students started the first day of school. “It’s the first year in a long time that we’ve started with everything,” Principal Francis Kennedy said, referring to completed renovations at the high school. With only a couple weeks to go before the big event, the Lions Club kicked it in high gear to transform the fairgrounds on Beckley Road in time for the 69th annual Berlin Fair. “There’s a lot of behind the scenes people,” said Charlie Satkowski, Lions Club member and assistant superintendent of plumbing on the grounds.

Nearly 400 volunteers, including non-club members and spouses, work to prepare the grounds months before fair weekend. On Monday, Aug. 28, Fritz Schmalberger, fair president, was at the fairgrounds along with several club members ready to begin another night of work. “I love seeing the fair come alive,” Schmalberger said. “It’s teamwork at its best.” As the fair date approaches, the hours of work extend and the attractions start to See Fair, A5

The new fair date also means getting the grounds ready earlier. “If we didn’t have volunteers we wouldn’t have a fair,” Satkowski said. “It takes a town,” added Jim Formicola, club member in charge of the sausage booth.

While the agricultural aspect and community involvement will continue to stay a tradition, the fair continues to go through changes year after year. “We’re really going to rejuvenate the fair this year,” said Dan Daigle, third vice president of the Lions and superintendent of the lower beer booth. “We’re bringing in bigger name people.”

On paper, the week was spent entirely on the road, making stops in Sugar Land and then in Long Island, but there is much more to the story than what meets the eye. The historic week began with 4 games at New Britain Stadium with the Bees serving as the away team against Sugar Land after the series was relocated due to Hurricane Harvey. In that series, Bees fans raised over $2,000 to go towards relief efforts.

Area towns help in Harvey’s wake By Bryan Lipiner and Lauren Takores Record-Journal staff

Where to give

As Tropical Storm Harvey began to move away from the Houston area last week, Connecticut residents and organizations had already begun to step up to help those in need.

CT 211 Online:https://uwc.211ct.org/hurricane-harvey

With up to 50 inches of rain in some areas and at least 18 deaths reported as a result of the storm, Harvey had hit Texas as a Category 4 hurricane. The aftermath also saw more than 1,000 homes destroyed and several thousands of people displaced. The storm then moved on to Louisiana with remnants expected to travel through Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky, according to the National Weather Service.

“Flooding is expected there as well,” Johnson said in advance of her trip.

She’s traveling with Animal Rescue Front, a Mississippi-based group formed after Hurricane Katrina.

“That will solve both problems,” she said. “It will free up space for Texas overflow, and if it does flood, the animals will be moved.” Johnson, a paralegal at Aetna, volunteers with the Wallingford Animal Shelter and the Meriden Humane Society.

McLaughlin, who lives in Massachusetts, formed the organization soon after Katrina. “It’s amazing how 12 years later, I’m going back and I’m going back with her,” Johnson said of McLaughlin. Berlin police officer Dave Cruickshank has been deployed to Houston with a national disaster medical team organized by a division of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. He has been responsible for security at a field hospital. Berlin Police Chief Paul Fitzgerald praised Cruickshank’s efforts.

Jeremy Rodorigo, spokesman for American Medical Response, an ambulance service that serves several towns in the state including Southington, said 18 AMR employees from Connecticut have traveled to Houston to assist. “That number will certainly increase as the days go by,” he said. “It’s just a horrible situation. I think it’s bigger than anyone thought it was going to be.” Southern New England Salvation Army spokeswoman Laura Krueger said the organization has up to 60 emergency disaster personnel

in Connecticut and Rhode Island that are ready to be deployed if called upon. The Salvation Army is also in the process of scheduling training in both states for volunteers who wish to assist in long-term recovery efforts. Two officers from the Coast Guard’s Long Island Sound sector, which includes all of Connecticut’s Coast Guard stations, have been dispatched to the Houston area, according to The Connecticut Mirror. Those deployed have been responsible for identifying needed missions and assets. headquartered on Research Parkway in Wallingford. “The poor and the working poor are disproportionately affected by disasters,” Beaudreau said. “Their recovery will be measured in months and years and will mean increased demand on food banks struggling to rebuild their own operations in the wake of disaster.” Gov. Dannel Malloy has advised residents to take caution when donating to relief organizations. Malloy warned natural disasters can be opportunities for fraudulent organizations to solicit money via email, phone or social media. “Past experience has taught us that the best way we can help survivors in a disaster, particularly in the first days,

is to donate funds to trusted charitable organizations that are often on the front lines working in close partnership with first responders,” Malloy said in a statement. “These funds will help those in need as the Houston region begins to recover.” “We urge everyone to remain vigilant when responding to requests to assist flood victims in Texas and Louisiana,” state Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Commissioner Dora Schriro said in a statement. “Donors should exercise caution when responding to any email with a subject line, attachment, or hyperlink related to Hurricane Harvey, even if it appears to originate from a trusted source.” On Sept. 9 and 10, the Archdiocese of Hartford will have a special collection at all masses for hurricane victims. Funds will go toward humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to dioceses affected.

COMMENTARY

School counselors are a valuable resource School counselors are certainly incredibly busy people. But our advice is that it’s your job this school year to make sure they are even busier. We don’t mean creating busywork, but rather taking advantage of all your school counselors have to offer. School counselors can offer a wide range of assistance to both students and parents, yet, unfortunately, most parents know little about just how much their child’s school counselor can offer. So this year, early in your child’s school year, make an effort to get to know his or her counselor and make the most of this very valuable educational resource. All school counselors have a great deal of training and are certified or licensed by the

state. In most states school counselors are required to hold at least a master’s degree. These are professionals who are trained to understand young people and help them reach their educational goals. Through standardized testing and monitoring of classroom performance, counselors can advise teachers, students and parents about classes offering the appropriate challenges and the best educational outcomes. That guidance portion of a school counselor’s work progresses with older students to advising them on which classes can best fulfill their educational and career goals, as well as explaining options for colleges, technical training or other directions after

high school. And, as trained professional counselors, school counselors can also assist students facing potential problem areas. From drug issues to bullying situations to improving study skills, school counselors are there to help students, and families, better handle the challenges that students today face. They don’t have magic wands but can offer proven techniques and approaches that can assist in coping with problem areas. Don’t wait for a crisis to talk with your child’s school counselor. An introductory meeting early in the year provides a chance to meet the counselor, to discuss your child, and to learn what assistance might be available.

Even more important is to contact that counselor quickly when problems first appear. Slipping grades or abrupt changes in a child’s attitude, behavior or friends, can all be signs that help is needed. That’s when a professional counselor can make a real difference. School counselors are professionals who have a great deal to offer our children. When we don’t take advan-

tage of their training, skills and experience, we’re only shortchanging ourselves, our children and our children’s educational experience.
