With only a couple weeks to go before the big event, the Lions Club kicked it in high gear to transform the fairgrounds on Beckley Road in time for the 69th annual Berlin Fair. “There’s a lot of behind the scenes people,” said Charlie Satkowski, Lions Club member and assistant superintendent of plumbing on the grounds.
Nearly 400 volunteers, including non-club members and spouses, work to prepare the grounds months before fair weekend. On Monday, Aug. 28, Fritz Schmalberger, fair president, was at the fairgrounds along with several club members ready to begin another night of work. “I love seeing the fair come alive,” Schmalberger said. “It’s teamwork at its best.” As the fair date approaches, the hours of work extend and the attractions start to See Fair, A5
