Crowds flock to Berlin Fair for fun and food Weekend revs up with demolition derby
By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
Crowds of hungry fairgoers kept more than 20 food booths extra busy Saturday during the second day of the Berlin Fair.

“The crowds are pretty good, much better than in the past two years,” said Gus Viteri of the Upbeat Community Team.
Motors revved and bumpers crashed as a demolition derby kicked off the 69th annual Berlin Fair.
The fair wrapped up Sunday. Viteri and other members were busy serving fried dough to lines of people at the Berlin Lions Club Memorial Pool Food Court by the Midway rides and games. “We’re going to fill up today,” said Lenny Tubbs, Lions Club president, of the increasing crowds. The bleachers were full, as crowds of people attended Thursday night’s first-ever fair derby, part of Fair Fest. “It’s going good so far,” said Fritz Schmalberger, fair president. “It’s our first year, so we’re really excited.”
JM Motorsport Productions, from New York, hosted the See Fair, A14 derby, with 21 participating
cars from Berlin and other surrounding towns. The show featured five heats of action with three qualifying events, with the final two cars receiving a cash prize and trophy as well as a spot in the championship event. The fourth round let non-winners from the first three events participate. The last car running received $900 and a trophy, with awards for the second-place winner. “Any time there’s smashing and crashing, people are into it,” said Jay Milligan, presiSee Derby, A14

The second annual concert, in front of the newly repaired gazebo, will honor those currently serving in the military
and veterans. Last year the event marked the official dedication of the park, which was completed in 2015 with the newest feature “America’s Wars Walkway.” The park is located off Route 372.
“A lot of people don’t realize the sacrifices veterans have made, including their lives,” said Peter Galgano, the town’s veteran contact person and member of the veterans commission. “The Town of Berlin has always been 100 percent behind what the veterans
want to do.” The veterans commission will once again host the event. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at McGee Middle School. — Ashley Kus

Brewery now on hold Owner David Peichart told members of the economic development commission last month that there have

been several delays. Concentric Brewing, at 817 Farmington Ave., planned to open this fall with a tap room. “We want to support them in any way we can,” said Chris Edge, director of economic development for the town.
The commission agreed to rescind Concentric Brewing’s application for facade and landscape improvements from the state’s STEAP grant program totaling more than $48,000. The brewery missed the deadline for the application. The funds will be used for another business’ facade project. Peichart did not return requests for comment.

In particular, Malloy said he couldn’t support the Republicans’ proposed cuts to the University of Connecticut, their formula for education funding, or their plan to assume savings beginning this year for proposed changes to pension calculations in 2027.
Rep. Cathy Abercrombie, D-Meriden, said that omission likely helped kill the Democrats’ budget, one she was ready to support Friday. She shared many of Malloy’s complaints on the Republican budget, including its cuts to UConn and its assumption in pension
savings.

Library to hold World War I digitization day By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
Residents will be able to digitally archive family photos and stories from World War I at Berlin-Peck Memorial Library next month. The library is partnering with the Connecticut State Library to hold a war Digitization Day on Saturday, Oct. 7. The event is funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Human-
ities, as part of the Remembering World War I project. “This is the first time we are participating,” said librarian Carrie Tyszka. Digitization days have been held all around the state since 2014. “These events are an important way of documenting a piece of history that may otherwise never be known,” Project Manager Christine Pittsley of the Connecticut State Library said in a statement.
Residents are encouraged to bring photos, medals, keepsakes, letter or other objects from WWI, which will be scanned into digital images and preserved in the Connecticut Digital Archive.
This undated family photo provided by Rick Maynard shows Robert Remington, of Hamden, Conn., who was killed in France in May of 1918 during World War I. The photo is among items that have been digitally archived by the Connecticut State Library as part of a program to preserve letters, photos and other artifacts from the war. | Rick Maynard via AP
Participants can also have their stories from ancestors of WWI recorded and preserved. “We thought it would be a good opportunity for people if they had memories of family history to be more permanently remembered See Library, A23

She swiped her finger along the side to sample the vanilla frosting, modeled her tiara, and admired the inscription, “Happy 105th Birthday, Lena” as her daughter, Jacki Czerwinski, gave her a hug. Officials caution against flooddamaged vehicles As hurricane season continues to batter the East Coast, Connecticut officials are warning residents to be on alert for flood-damaged vehicles if they plan on purchasing a used car. In a joint press release, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, Attorney General George Jepsen, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles and the Connecticut Automotive Retailers Association issued a warning to residents to look for potential damage and to utilize resources to make sure they don’t end up purchasing damaged goods. “Consumers in the market for a new or used car should be especially cautious following the recent flooding events that took place because food-damaged vehicles could make their way to Connecticut,” Malloy said.

Department of Motor Vehicles, flood-damaged vehicles can enter the local market in any number of ways, ranging from those already in Connecticut to those shipped here from other flood-ravaged states. Requirements vary state-by-state for disclosing whether a vehicle has been damaged in a flood, officials said.

Those who already purchased used cars with flood damage should contact the DMV Consumer Complaint Center, located at 60 State St., Wethersfield. When I first took up archery way back when, recurve bows and fixed blade arrows, many times mounted on wood shafts, were all the rage. Back then, you could outfit yourself with some top-notch archery gear for a couple of hundred bucks (and that is a bit on the high end). Climbing treestands were just beginning to come into play. Most of the treestands were the permanent wood type, nailed right into the trees, much to the dismay of those in charge of state forests. Up ‘til then I really had not given much thought to bow-
hunting for deer, sticking with the firearms side of the sport. But after a hunting buddy, Paul Cichowski, and I made a preseason trip to check out the Housatonic State Forest for the new upcoming black powder season on state lands, I decided that archery hunting would give me a new way to scout an area for deer and yet have the chance to put a tag on one or two. My darlin’ Edna gave me my first bow and arrows that year for Christmas, a Bear Bushmaster recurve and a set of wooden arrows with fixed broad heads on them. Little did she know what a bowhunting monster she created. As the years progressed so did the season dates and the equipment. I believe the first season date change was when they went to Oct. 1 for an opening day of archery. Compound bows began to make an appearance on the archery scene, and while they did not match today’s prices — some bows with a price tag of $1,000 or more —
some of the new compounds back then were selling for a couple of hundred bucks. I know I got my first one called a Bear Whitetail for a little under $200.

Lyman: one of a kind
“NO! Not now,” I thought as the flashlight beam came closer and closer. Sure enough the flashlight and its holder came directly to my treestand. He still did not know I was there and was preparing to climb up into the stand until I gave a low whistle. The poor guy almost went over backwards down the mountainside after I startled him.
Dave Lyman and I became friends back in the late 80s and I was more than impressed with his dedication to young target shooters who came through the doors at Blue Trail Range in Wallingford. Dave claimed that Blue Trail was the “Home of Championship Shooters,” and he was as right as rain.
“Well, I built the stand, so that gives me the right to be in it. I’d like to know what you are doing here?” “I found the stand last week and missed a big buck in it, so I thought I would try it again,” he replied. “I’ll move on and good luck.”
He and his wife Debra were probably most proud of their son Remington, who made Believe it or not, I did see a quite a mark for himself in big buck while in the stand the shooting sports, both on that morning, but it never a local basis and a national offered a shot. Again, that level as well. And who could is what deer hunting is all about, or at least it should be. blame them?

“Wh-what are you doing there?” he blurted out.
Every once in a while I would get a call from Dave to come and watch certain shooters. Sometimes they were young men and other times they were young ladies. They all had one thing in common. They could all shoot the heck out of a paper target thanks to the coaching of Dave Lyman.
There will be an unfillable void in the shooting industry with the untimely passing of a man as dedicated to the shooting sports as Dave Lyman was. I know I will miss him. To his wife Debra and son Remington, you have my deepest sympathy, and I mean that with all my heart.

Champion driver dies in plane crash competed at every level of NASCAR during his career. In 2006, he was selected as one of the top 25 drivers in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series history.
By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff
Modified champion auto racer Ted Christopher, a Plainville native, was one of two people killed when a small plane crashed in the woods in Connecticut on Saturday, NASCAR officials said.
On the Whelen tour and on New England short tracks, “Christopher was a throwback to NASCAR’s roots,” France said in a statement. “He was a tough racer’s racer, and his hard driving style and candid personality endeared him to short track fans throughout the country.”
Christopher, 59, was a popular driver at Stafford Springs and Thompson tracks. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that two people were aboard a Mooney M20C plane that went down near the North Branford-Guilford border shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday.
Christopher’s death brought tributes from others in the racing world.

Hampshire Motor Speedway. “Ted Christopher was the gold standard when it came to short track racing, specifically the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. With 10 career victories, Teddy is one of New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s most prolific drivers. I know that I can speak for everyone here, as well as our entire Speedway Motorsports, Inc. family, when I say that while Teddy may be gone, his legacy will carry on for generations to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow competitors at this very difficult time.” Stafford Motor Speedway issued the following statement Sunday: “All of us at Stafford Speedway are devastated over the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of our longtime friend Ted Christo-
pher and the aircraft’s pilot, Charles Dundas” said Stafford Speedway GM Mark Arute. “For over three decades Ted Christopher has been an inspiration for both young and old at Stafford Speedway. His passion for racing thrilled fans and pushed fellow competitors to their limits. He was the backbone of the modified community, and a role model to the countless young drivers in paddock areas throughout the Northeast. He was not only one of the greatest drivers ever to compete at Stafford Speedway, he was also a great friend to many. His hard driving style, off track antics, passion for short track racing, and legendary persona will be missed by both drivers and fans. His legacy will remain with us forever and he will be missed by all of us here at Stafford Speedway.” “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Quinn,
Tempore Martin M. Looney, D-New Haven, and Republican Leader Len Fasano, R-North Haven, both expressed hope that the potential veto of the GOP budget would force the two sides to work on a compromise.

brother Michael, sister Judy, mom Lucy and the entire Christopher family and friends.” Information from the Associated Press was used in this story.
Democrats have complained that some Republicans are characterizing their plan as having no tax increases, adding the nonpartisan Office of Fiscal Analysis projects it will raise roughly $800 million in tax revenues over two years.
Some questioned how much further the two parties could move toward a compromise. “I think the proposition of sending us back to the drawing board is not going to generate something beneficial for the state,” said Rep. Rob Sampson, R-Wolcott, who also represents part of Southington.
The majority — nearly $700 million — is through an increase in the hospital tax that the Connecticut Hospital Association endorsed as part of a plan that would actually result in more revenues to both hospitals and the state.
Rep. John Fusco, R-Southington, said Malloy’s is “pressing his agenda on, not only the state of Connecticut, but the legislature.”
The Republican budget also reduces eligibility for the earned income tax credit, which Fishbein said has been abused by some people who have turned the program into a “handout” by getting refunds without paying any taxes.
“Doing that is not going to benefit our state — I mean, we have got to hold our ground,” he said. “We are in a position of power now. We can lead this state.”

On schedule: Colors of fall foliage expected to peak in late October By Bryan Lipiner Record-Journal staff
Although leaves in some parts of the state have begun to change color, environmental officials say fall foliage is on a normal track. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Director Of Forestry Chris Martin said leaves on trees in some swamp areas have started to change color due to the high moisture content in the area. Leaves will begin to change color in the northwest and northeast corners of the state later this month. Foliage will peak in Central Connecticut between Oct. 24 and 30.
“We are predicting a very good year, as long as September is typical as long as weather goes,” Martin said. “The vibrancy should be more concentrated.” However, warm weather can slow the color-changing process. Last year, the process was accelerated because of drought conditions, Martin said. Martin said leaves on most healthy trees are still green and will begin to change color in the coming weeks.

Chlorophyll, which gives leaves their green color, also begins to break down. Gary Lessor, meteorologist with the Weather Center at Western Connecticut State University, said temperatures will be above normal in the coming weeks, with longrange models also indicating above normal temperatures.
“Everything else is pretty much on schedule,” Martin said.
Lessor said hurricanes, such as Hurricane Jose, could negatively affect the process, Martin said overnight lows of as the storms produce gusty about 40 degrees are ideal for winds which can rip leaves off of trees. leaves to change color. Sugars, which normally travel
