An earlier report from WFSB Channel 3 said “they’re close to finding a place in Berlin and could open at the end of the year.”

Hospital volunteer opportunities available The Hospital of Central Connecticut offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. Several departments are in need of volunteers at their reception desks. Volunteers are also needed at the main desk to provide escorting and guiding services as well as wheelchair assistance to those entering the hospital or in the Delphi clinic area. Volunteers that have a certified pet therapy dog are welcome. Pet visits provide comfort and support to patients who otherwise may have no visitors or may feel lonely and isolated in a hospital setting. Research shows these visits can reduce anxiety, loneliness and blood pressure and may help motivate withdrawn patients to cooperate in their treatment. Patient Advocate volunteers provide friendly visits to all inpatients to ensure their experience is positive, care is exceptional and to promote a high level of customer satisfaction. COMMENTARY

Letters to the Editor

No time for political posturing By State Rep. Joe Aresimowicz

After the Republican budget narrowly passed the legislature and was deservingly vetoed by the governor, Republican legislators spent more than two weeks campaigning around the state, bragging about how great their budget is for the state, and calling for a veto override vote in the legislature. So as the Speaker of the House, I gave them that opportunity. On Oct. 3, we convened the House of Representatives, and gave them a chance to discuss, debate, and make the case for their budget that was vetoed by the governor, yet not one Republican legislator stood up to defend it or call for a vote. In one way, it is not surprising because as it continues to be analyzed and assessed, clearly this Republican budget is severely flawed and not the answer to our fiscal challenges. There may even be some legislators who voted for it that never expected it to actually become law, and prefer that it doesn’t. The reality is that the Republican budget, which is opposed by school superintendents and our colleges and universities, would devastate working families with higher taxes, decimate the state’s public education system at all levels, and underfund our pension system – precisely the type of irresponsible decisions that created our current fiscal crisis. Republicans were given another chance to lead, and again failed to show up. With the urgency to come to a budget agreement that can become law growing every day, we needed to put the override discussion in the past, and work together to forge a path to a final budget that reflects the priorities of Connecticut’s residents.

While it is clear that we disagree on some areas, we also have a lot of the same priorities in our budgets. We both agree on changing the relationship between the state and the municipalities, reforming the state contracting system, and phasing out the income tax on Social Security payments. We need to continue to build on the areas we agree on and work on finding the common ground in the areas we don’t. Throughout this entire budget process I have said that I will draw no lines in the sand and take nothing off the table, because that is not a productive way to negotiate an agreement. With a disastrous scenario for our schools on the horizon, it is critical that we work together and compromise with the governor and Republicans to reach a bipartisan agreement on a final budget in short order. Bipartisanship is what the public wants, and with a split Senate and a slim House margin that is what is needed. That message rings truer and louder with every day that goes by. Every legislator hears it from their constituents at home in their districts.

Put party politics aside

Sound management

Who’s really to blame?

To the editor:

To the editor:

To the editor:

Here’s a list of good management decisions Berlin Democrats have amassed over the years.

Stephen Anderson’s Oct. 5 letter would propose the Democrats saved Berlin High School from total devastation. This crisis, this “safety hazard,” was born from years of mismanagement. For 12 years, Adam Salina and the Democrats were in charge. Taxpayers’ dollars, supposedly earmarked for building maintenance and repairs, were wasted. The Democrats’ lack of leadership, responsibility and action brought Berlin High into disrepair.

I am on the ballot for Board of Finance. I am CFO for Hartford Distributors and registered Unaffiliated. Many of you know me through volunteer work with youth sports and know that I will examine every penny we spend and make sure we spend them wisely. There is no one – R or D – answer to any question. A recent Letter to the Editor would have you believe that fixing our 60-year-old high school that was in utter disrepair was reckless spending. Nonsense. We must come together and do what is right for our town, educated with facts, not rhetoric.

How about: Berlin Municipal Complex, Hubbard, Griswold, McGee, BHS, Sage Park, Timberlin Golf Course, senior housing, Animal Control Shelter, Percival Pool, Bittner Dinda Demore Memorial Park and Pool, industrial parks, Little League fields. The list goes on. These were just some of the “management decisions” under Democratic administrations that helped make Berlin the town we all chose to live in. Many, or all, are examples of projects Republicans fought.

Mark A. Holmes It’s easy to be fiscally responBerlin sible when the needs of the citizens have already been taken care of.

Enough is enough

Carol Yorker Berlin

To the editor: Republican candidates’ signs are lies. “We support our schools.” The Republican majority has consistently cut the school budget and is proposing another 20 percent cut. “Keep taxes low.” Taxes have been raised.

“Your voice counts.” A reduced proposal for a new police station wasn’t brought There is no more room or to voters. And where’s the time for political posturing. $2 million promised by the The good news is that the two mayor to improve the existparties are not that far apart ing station? on the bottom line, includIn the past two years, the ing important areas such as town manager was fired, the funding for our schools and chief of police, superintenhelping out our hospitals. dent, tax collector, director of Time is of the essence, so finance, director of planning let’s all finally put our “D” and zoning, and purchasing and “R” labels aside, put up agent have fled, and mula “C” for Connecticut, and tiple positions were simply work together for the better- eliminated. ment of our state we all love. Enough is enough. Vote for Richard Paskiewicz and the Democratic team. Julie Erickson Berlin

Just what the town needs To the editor: As budget issues continue to plague the state and our towns, I am thrilled that Sal Bordonaro is running for the Berlin Board of Finance. Sal has spent most of his career at Kaman Aerospace working his way up to director of finance and then president of Kaman Helicopters. He has a strong work ethic and is committed to whatever he takes on. Just as important, he maintained a good work/family balance. Sal’s financial and leadership experience is just what this town needs to help manage its finances and offer cost-effective solutions that watch out for how the taxpayers’ dollars are spent.

As to the outrageous package of goodies awarded to the ex-town manager Denise McNair; again Mr. Anderson need only turn to his Democrat colleagues and ask them who authorized such a rich separation contract, and why. Joan Veley Berlin

Ready to serve To the editor: My name is Alex Giannone, a first-time candidate for Town Council. I have lived in Berlin for 10 years with my wife and two children. I am currently a state police sergeant with almost 12 years of law enforcement experience. I am also a licensed attorney. The value I intend to offer is: strong communication skills, poise during stressful situations and the ability to respect diverse viewpoints. My experiences have taught me to learn, understand and communicate difficult subject matter to others; skills that are directly applicable to being a town councilman. Please vote for me on Nov. 7. Promises broken

Republicans are concerned about the town’s debt load and they found ways to reduce spending. Working with Taylor Cope Jack Healy, they will continue Berlin to move Berlin forward with an eye on the future, despite the difficult times in our state.

Perhaps they should adopt a new slogan: “Promises Made, Promises Broken.”

To the editor: The Republican Town Committee left mailbox cards in my neighborhood. According to the card, I should trust the Republicans with both Berlin’s future and my wallet. Where were the Republicans when they fired our highly-competent town manager? They weren’t thinking about Berlin’s future or our wallets, as it has cost us more money to pay both Denise McNair and the interim manager. Where were the Republicans when they raised taxes two years in a row without any new services? Did they not run two years ago with the promise of new taxes?

I’m with ‘Mayor Mark’

Gary Pavano Berlin

To the editor: This fall voters will choose between two mayoral candidates and their teams. Mayor Mark and his team have spent the past two years unraveling town issues, consolidating and evaluating spending through a financial audit, and maintaining services while keeping an eye on the bottom line.

Don’t go backwards To the editor: With the state in a financial budget and pension crisis, I am grateful our town changed direction two years ago and voted in Republicans.

PLEASE VISIT WWW.CMS.GOV FOR MORE INFORMATION

With Jack Healy, Mayor Kaczynski works very hard to identify cost savings and review financial and organizational practices in town which may help us through this crisis. I do not want to go backwards and have the Democrats – who taxed and spent for 12 years – in control again. The town has bonded over 100 percent of our budget through their irresponsible spending. So they increased the budget a great deal and borrowed even more.

Testing at leak site confirms PCBs Further testing of oil that leaked into Belcher Brook recently has confirmed the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls, PCBs. The brook runs into Silver Lake, near the Meriden line. Dennis Schain, spokesman for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, said two tests confirmed “low to moderate levels” of PCBs. He said contractors are removing contaminated soil. The oil leaked from an abandoned natural gas line with a puncture in the area of Toll Gate Road. The hole was sealed Sunday night, Oct. 1. Eversource has claimed responsibility for the leak. “We’re working with DEEP and the (Environmental Protection Agency),” said Mitch Gross, Eversource spokesman. Toll Gate Road was closed to through traffic shortly after crews arrived on scene. “There is a culvert in that area, digging had to occur around it to expose the gas pipe line so it could be addressed and cleaned out and sealed off,” Schain said. “That will need some repairs or replacement.”

Fire departments seeking volunteers The Berlin, East Berlin, Kensington and South Kensington Fire Departments are looking for volunteer firefighters. Volunteers must be at least 18, of good moral character, reside or work in Berlin and be physically capable. Contact Mike Blais at mikeblais@hotmail.com or 860-329-7738.

Schain said the flow of the stream has been diverted in order to remove soils from the stream bed. Jack Healy, interim town manager and public works director for Berlin, said further samples will be taken from wells and septic systems in the area. Healy said there is no known contamination of wells. Residents who live on the closed portion of Toll Gate Road between Orchard Road and Saw Mill Drive will still be able to access the area. akus@record-journal.com 203-317-2448 Twitter: @KusReporter

Berlin Bears take on Vernon A team The Berlin Bears improved to 5-0 with a dominating win over Vernon. The Berlin offense was led by the offensive line, which paved the way for Max Wojtusik, who rushed for four touchdowns and also threw for a score. Adding to the scoring was Jon D’Amore, who rushed for a TD; Gianmichael DiDomenico, who caught a pass for a TD; and Tanner Sparks, who scored on two extra point attempts. The Bears’ defense, once

again, stifled the opposing offense and held the Vernon rushing attack in check. The defense was anchored by Duncan Mute, RJ Longo, Euan Rotoni and Jack Hartan. Darian Pothitay blocked a punt and Elijah Roberts recovered a fumble for the victors.

Berlin’s blistering defense netted two safeties on the day. On the offensive side of the ball, the Bears were led by Mason Memery and Josh King, who found their way into the end zone behind the always-sturdy offensive line.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Bears were led by Sebastian Karwowski, who found his way into the end zone with a 40-yard-plus dash and the assistance of a tremendous O-line push. The Bears almost took the lead after a 50-yard-plus quarterback keeper by Jack Long. However, the play was called back after a holding penalty.

Choral Director Tyler Boyle plays the piano as Berlin High School students rehearse for the annual cabaret event to be held Saturday, Nov. 4, in the new school auditorium. |Ashley Kus, The Berlin Citizen

Students to perform modern, classic musical numbers for cabaret By Ashley Kus Citizen staff

Audience members at Berlin High School’s annual cabaret event next month will be transported to Broadway as the students perform a mix of musical numbers from “Cabaret” and recent Tony award-winning musical “Dear Evan Hansen.” “While they’re on Broadway doing this, we’re also doing this,” said sophomore Dawson Trotman. “It’s almost living vicariously through them.” The cabaret will be held Saturday, Nov. 4 in the new high school auditorium. Tyler Boyle, the new choral director, said he is excited. “It’s state of the art, we can do some really wonderful things,” Boyle said of the auditorium.

The cabaret will have three group numbers along with solos, duets and dance. Nicole Pinto, a junior, is responsible for the choreography to a piece from “Kinky Boots.” “That’s just so full of energy and it’s just so much fun,” she said. Pinto joins 40 classmates from different grades and experience levels. “We all get so into it and I’m just so excited for it,” she said. The cabaret is a fundraiser for the spring musical, which will be announced the night of the event. “It’s always very exciting,” Trotman said of the musical reveal. Students help create Bluetoothenabled tracking device The 15-week Junior Achievement Entrepreneurial Academy at Stanley Black and Decker was made up of students from several towns, including Steven Miano, Connor Recck and Briana Muller of Berlin High School. Students created a company called LoK8, a Bluetooth-enabled device that helps track small, commonly-lost items such as keys, sunglasses and phones. From left: Ryan Lane, Jenny Robertson, Briana Muller (Berlin), Anna Szekeres (Avon), Rashmi Rajesh (Farmington), Hines Ward, Patrick Reed and Peggy Loos.

In June, four students, including Muller, competed at the Travelers PGA/FedEx Tour and took first place, which qualified

them for the finals at the PGA/FedEx Tour in Atlanta. Junior Achievement student companies pitched their businesses to the judging panel, which included sports celebrities and local business affiliates and were evaluated on presentation, content, visual aids and connectivity to either innovation, sustainability, job creation or trade. Lo-K8 won the inaugural FedEx Junior Business Challenge, earning a $75,000 donation for Junior Achievement of Southwest New England.
