Study: Police station fails to meet development goals By Ashley Kus The Citizen

Land near the train station on Farmington Avenue may not be suitable for a police station, according to a study regarding potential transitoriented development in the Kensington Village area.

“We need to look at what makes sense to us,” said Chris Edge, director of economic development. “It’s a great opportunity to look at what the long term can be.” The town previously hired a team of consultants, led by the Massachusetts-based

company CivicMoxie, to study the area. The study was funded by a grant. Several meetings over the last year concentrated on the quarter-mile radius surrounding the train station.

The holidays will be a little brighter for troops in Kuwait this year thanks to a group of volunteers in Berlin.

“It’s mission accomplished,” said Deputy Chief Chris Ciuci. “We’re getting them out of medicine cabinets, so that’s a win in our book.”

“Everyone is contributing in so many ways,” said Karen Cote, a Berlin resident.

People dropped off unused and expired medications outside Town Hall Saturday afternoon, Oct. 28.

This will be the third year of Cote’s efforts to send gift boxes to deployed troops. The boxes will be gift wrapped by the community Thanksgiving night at the VFW on Massirio Drive. This year the goal is 200 boxes. “It’s been wonderful,” said Kristin Gauvin, a Berlin resident. “We wanted to be a bigger part of it.” Gauvin and her son Liam, a student at Griswold Elementary School, were loading up dozens of items Wednesday night, Nov. 1. The school is among several places in town that are helping collect items. In the span of three weeks, Cote and the committee of volunteers have been able to

On the 11 th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month, we pause to honor America’s veterans and celebrate

their contributions to our way of life. Few have given more to our nation than the men and women who have served in our armed forces in peace and in war. So on this day we want to ensure veterans know that we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made in their lives to keep our country free.

Helaine was, also, known for designing hats and for many years ran a millinery shop in Hartford. Just over the road on the turnpike was the legendary Hawthorne Inn run by the Grelak family for over 60 years and widely known for generous portions of the best tasting prime rib.

After focusing on other parts of town, it is time to deeply travel through Berlin's southern end. Mayoral candidates debate ahead of Election Day By Ashley Kus The Citizen Editor’s note: Visit www.theberlincitizen.com online for Election Day coverage.

Several topics were discussed during the first mayoral debate at Berlin High School Thursday night, Nov. 2 hosted by the school’s speech and debate club. “I really hope you participate in our politics because who our mayor will be really does matter,” said Christian Damiana, high school junior and president of the club.

Community members gathered in the high school auditorium as incumbent Mayor Mark Kaczynski (R) and newcomer candidate Richard Paskiewicz (D) answered questions, some of which were submitted online by the public. One topic focused on economic development and keeping businesses in town. “We’ve been very successful the last couple of years in the business community,” Kaczynski said. He discussed over 40 busi-

nesses that have come to town in the last few years as well as a business bus tour to see new developments over the summer. Paskiewicz said that while many businesses have come to Berlin, many have also left in the past few years. “Regarding the bus tour, while I think that’s a great idea I started that way back in my career as superintendent,” he said in response to Kaczynski. “I’m a strong believer in supporting local See Mayor, A12

Hospital volunteers The Hospital of Central Connecticut offers volunteer opportunities. Several departments need volunteers at their reception desks. Volunteers also are needed at the main desk to provide escorting and guiding services as well as wheelchair assistance. Volunteers with a certified pet therapy dog are welcome. Pet visits provide comfort and support to patients who may have no visitors or feel lonely and isolated in a hospital setting. Research shows these visits can reduce anxiety, loneliness and blood pressure, and may help motivate withdrawn patients to cooperate in their treatment. Patient Advocate volunteers provide friendly visits to all inpatients to ensure their experience is positive, care is exceptional and to promote a high level of customer satisfaction. Excitement was high.

The Berlin High School football team improved to 8-0 on the season with a thrilling 23-14 victory over Bloomfield Friday. It was Senior Night at Sage Park, and the last home game of the regular season for the Redcoats. Also, with a record of 6-1, Bloomfield was a worthy opponent.

The Warhawks started the game strong, overpowering the Redcoats early and scoring after an 8-minute drive. Ky’Juon Butler finished for the Warhawks and proved to be a problem for the Redcoats throughout the game. But the Berlin squad showed its poise after falling behind. the field and scored a mere two minutes later. Alex Halkias finished off the drive for the Redcoats with a 2yard touchdown run. Halkias, like many of his teammates, contributed on both sides of the ball against Bloomfield. Halkias accumulated 95 total yards on offense and manufactured 13 tackles. With the game knotted at 7, Bloomfield continued to push the Redcoat defense, scoring early in the second quarter to take a 14-7 lead. From there, Berlin’s defense clamped down, and kept the Warhawks off the board the rest of the way, while forcing multiple turnovers.

On Thursday, Oct. 26, the Berlin High School girls and boys soccer teams hosted Maloney. The girls game was played at 5 p.m., followed by the boys at 7. The evening of soccer was dubbed "Pink in the Park" and the teams raised over $1,000 for breast cancer research. Both Berlin squads prevailed that evening. The girls won 6-0 and the boys 4-0.

Tony Undercuffler once again, played a big part in the Redcoat defense, intercepting the ball midway through the second quarter. Lineman Sebby Scott also added to the defensive effort, recovering a Bloomfield fumble.

Thank you for voting us #1 Best Assisted Living!

With the score still 14-7 in the third quarter, Berlin quarterback Kevin Dunn found Giancarlo Tufano for a game-tieing TD. The Warhawks then returned to their bruising run game but saw little success against the Redcoat defensive line. So, with three minutes to go in the game, Bloomfield switched to a more pass-based offense. The Redcoats capitalized on this, smothering receivers and knocking down the Warhawk offensive line.

In Brief

During November, the Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA is honoring the sacrifice of local veterans, active duty and reserves by saying thank you and supporting their health and wellness. Through Nov. 30, local veterans, active duty military and reservists and their families (who are not currently members) will have complimentary access to the Meriden YMCA and New Britain YMCA locations to work out and spend family time together. The Armed Services YMCA and Department of Defense Outreach Initiative offer YMCA memberships to eligible active duty military families and personnel who may not have access to a nearby military facility. Y staff can assist military members with information about how they may qualify for a no cost six-month membership through the Military Outreach Initiative. For those that don’t qualify for the no cost membership, we offer special rates for military families (active

and reserves) and veterans. To learn more, contact Joan Goodman, Membership and Marketing Director for the Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCAs at 203.235.6386 ext. 16.
