Elected officials will be sworn in this month By Ashley Kus The Citizen
Berlin held its program at Berlin High School Thursday night, Nov. 9 in the auditorium. Veterans and their family members attended along with students, faculty and town officials.
Mark Kaczynski (R) will be sworn in as mayor for a second term later this month along with the new Town Council, finance and education boards and police commission. “We can move forward,” Kaczynski said Tuesday night, Nov. 7.
“Their struggles and death are not wasted on me, I’m truly grateful for all they’ve sacrificed,” said Lindsey Leary, an 8th grade student at McGee Middle School. Leary and three other classmates spoke about how veterans influenced their generation. See Veterans, A2
It will be the first time the town will swear in a mayor. A charter change last year gave voters the ability to elect the mayor rather than that position being appointed by the council. On Friday, Nov. 10 veterans were recognized with the same medley at Middle School of Plainville, where students and veterans gathered for a Veterans Day program.
Superintendent of Schools Maureen Brummett said the day is a chance to recognize and honor local veterans.
Military speakers, who answered questions from students, described their duties overseas and how they got involved in the military.
“I know what goes into being a military member and a military family member,” Brummett said. Her stepson is currently on active duty in the air force. Faculty members and staff were also recognized for their service as veterans.
At Plainville High School over 50 veterans and their families were treated to a hot “I think it’s wonderful that we can celebrate veterans,” breakfast in the cafeteria. Medic said. “as well as give students the opportunity to “It’s a much bigger turnout be here and celebrate with than we had last year,” said them.” Roberto Medic, Plainville High principal. MERIDEN — President Donald Trump signed into law a bill that reauthorizes funding and support to law enforcement to investigate internet crimes against minors, ensuring funding will continue through 2022.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, the act will cost an additional $113 million between 2018 and 2022, and another $119 million after that.

Eversource seeking rate hike By Mike Savino Record-Journal staff
Eversource is seeking approval for rate increases over a three-year period, saying that the hikes are needed to pay for infrastructure upgrades. The average increase would be 6.79 percent over three years, according to Eversource, which filed its request with the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority. The increases would take effect beginning May 21. “We’re always working to better serve our customers and as a result, they are experiencing fewer and shorter outages thanks to the strategic investments we’ve made in the communities we serve,” said a statement from Craig Hallstrom, Eversource president of electric operations in Connecticut.
PURA spokesman Michael Coyle said state law gives the commission six months to make a decision. The panel can request a 30 day extension. The request, filed Oct. 27, applies to Eversource’s distribution costs, which it last obtained approval to increase in 2014. It separately announced Nov. 3 that it plans to increase its supply rate by roughly 1 cent per kilowatt hour, which will amount to an increase in the average monthly bill of $7. Eversource said the rate increase is needed to offset expected deficiencies in its operating expenses over the next three years due to ongoing improvements to its delivery system. The utility has been installing wires and poles since 2012, upgrades Eversource said have resulted in
a 34-percent drop in stormrelated outages. Eversource, then operating as Connecticut Light & Power Co., was heavily criticized after major storms in 2011 and 2012 left more than 600,000 people without power, some for a week or more. Montville Mayor Ron McDaneil praised Eversource’s response since that time. “In response to the several natural disasters we experienced over the last decade, their efforts have led to a large decrease in both the number of outages and the duration,” he said in a statement. Coyle said Eversource’s response to storms is just one of the factors that PURA commissioners can consider. The process will begin with a series of initial filings to provide information for
PURA analysts, followed by testimony from Eversource. The attorney general and Office of Consumer Council may also submit testimony. After a period of discovery, PURA will hold evidentiary and public comment hearings. PURA, a quasi-public agency, will hold public comment hearings throughout Eversource’s territory. Wallingford’s Public Utilities Commission, which oversees the town-owned electric system, approved its own threeyear rate increase plan back in December. Coyle said PURA can consider past decisions when considering a pending request, but he doesn’t believe the Wallingford PUC decision will have any impact. msavino@record-journal.com 203-317-2266 Twitter: @reporter_savino

Now’s the time to get the snowblower in order Winter is on the way – and clearing driveways, sidewalks and parking lots isn’t a small job. It’s important to be ready before the snow arrives. The following snowblower tips are offered to prepare for winter weather: Review the owners manual. If it’s missing, look it up online. Review how to operate the controls. Be able to shut off the machine quickly. Check the equipment. Make sure the snowblower is off when checking it over. If it wasn’t done in the fall, drain the gas tank now. Adjust any cables.
Letters to the Editor Celebrating ‘Friendship’
Put the snowblower where it is easily accessible.
To the editor:
Purchase fuel. Gas stations can be closed after a storm, so keep a filled gas can handy. Be sure to use the correct fuel, as recommended by the manufacturer. Fill the tank before you start the machine, when the engine is cold. Never add fuel to a running engine.
On Sunday, Oct. 15, a group of people came together in the spirit of faith, hope and charity to celebrate the goal of one man to make the world around him a better place. The man was Msgr. Farrell, the time was 1968 and the place that he founded was the Friendship Service Center of New Britain.
Store fuel properly. Fuel that is more than 30 days old can cause operating problems.
His goal was to make sure that “nobody was a nobody in the eyes of God”… and to make that love visible by creating a place where those who were homeless and needed help could find it.
Never put you hands inside the auger or chute. Use a clean-out tool or See Snowblower, A17
Through his efforts, and those of many others who came to believe as he did, it was possible. The Friendship Service Center has continued to this day.

I was promised that their tree service would help clear the brush and dead trees along the back of my property, but this was a few months ago. In the spirit of inspiration, my son and I started clearing things out ourselves. We found a lawn chair, a shotgun shell, a steel pipe, a grinding wheel, two hubcaps, a car axle and too many smashed glass soda bottles to count or safely pick up.

Rocky Hill gets the best of Berlin By Ajlal N. Khan Special to The Citizen
The Berlin High School football team lost its first game of the season on Friday, falling to the Rocky Hill Terriers 26-10 in the bitter cold. The Berlin side started strong, kicking a field goal and holding the host Terriers scoreless in the first quarter. The mistakes soon came for the Redcoats, however.
Rocky Hill started the second quarter with a quick touchdown, taking the lead. Shortly after, the Terriers extended their advantage after forcing a safety on a punt attempt. The victors relied heavily on running back Joe Catania, and Berlin was unable to find an answer for him and the Rocky Hill run game, as the Terriers scored again in the second quarter. Berlin’s special teams also
struggled on this night, allowing the Terriers great field position numerous times. “The defense was constantly put in a bad situation because of our kick coverage team,” Berlin’s Alex Halkias said. “When the opponent gets the ball at the 50 almost every drive, there is little to no chance of a punt.” The half ended with Rocky Hill leading 16-3.
Berlin marched down the field and scored early in the third quarter, cutting its deficit to six. Quarterback Kevin Dunn was the one to score for the Redcoats, running into the end zone behind great blocking. But Rocky Hill didn’t allow the Redcoats to make up any more ground.

She earned the nickname “snowflake” from her softball teammates, as no two swings were ever the same. And the way she ran was as if she was afraid to touch the ground. Still, youth coaches like Keith D’Amato and Ray Reimer taught her the game and she improved.

But it is softball where she has shined the brightest. Mayer has been a varsity player since her freshman year, made the All-NCCC team the last two seasons, been captain the last two seasons and already holds the school record for most hits, with 139. Last year she added six home runs and has 103 RBI in her career. Mayer is a catcher but also plays shortstop at times. She plans to major in Emergency Management/Homeland Security at Post in Waterbury. She would love to work in the FBI or CIA one day.
