Berlin students and police officers will take a trip to the toy store next month to pick out gifts for local families in need.

Community members gathered at Town Hall last week as town officials were sworn into office.

“It’s all about being an upstanding citizen,” said Detective Theodore Fuini. The event, in its second year, is part of the DARE program for fifth graders.

Sobriety checkpoint scheduled in Berlin

Obituaries Michael J. Kowalczyk Texas, and was involved in its construction. He was a teacher, mentor, and participated in the Bible study group. He was proud of his Polish Heritage, and, if you had a birthday, he would ask if he could sing Sto Lat as his gift to you (a traditional Polish song expressing good wishes, good health and long life). Mike felt tremendous joy as an instigator of random acts of kindness. Whether leaving flowers anonymously for an appreciated waitress, or inviting a young child to play tic tac toe, then gifting them with the game he had crafted, he enjoyed making others smile and feel special. After hurricane Harvey flooded his car, business and apartment, Michael started rebuilding his life from scratch. He had bought a car, got a job, and was working on an apartment when he had a major stroke and several small ones. Then the Lord called him home, and he rests now in peace and love. Michael is survived by his daughter, Anne Akehurst and husband, Keith; and granddaughter, Evelyn, of Chicago, Ill.; his mother, Carolyn Wysocki, of Berlin; his brother, David Kowalczyk, of Spring,

Texas; sister, Karen A. Brunette and husband, Guy, of Glastonbury, and sister, Diane B. Kowalczyk, of Avon; as well as aunt and uncle, Joan and Norman Chasse, of Novi, Mich. He is also survived by niece, Kayce; nephews, Michael, Trevor and Thomas; and several cousins; and friends. The family would like to thank the Congregation Beth Messiah Family, who had been a tremendous help with preparing Michael for rest. Special thanks to Ana Chavez and family for their love and support, especially during recovery from hurricane Harvey. A beautiful service was held for Michael in Texas at Congregation Beth Messiah on Friday, Nov. 10, attended by family and friends. In Connecticut, a “Celebration of Michael’s Life” Open House will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 1 to 4 p.m., at 531 Toll Gate Road, Berlin. Please wear purple, Mike’s favorite color. Please visit Michael’s guestbook and share your memories on www.legacy.com/obituaries/houstonchronicle/obituary.aspx?n=michael-jkowal-

COMMENTARY

See you at the (holiday) fair By Olivia L. Lawrence The Citizen

The holiday rush is on, like a big ocean wave that should be expected but somehow catches you off guard and sends you scrambling. At least that’s my experience, as typically I find myself unprepared when it comes to the festivities that include mostly Christmas, perhaps a Solstice celebration, occasionally a Chanukah or Kwanza event as well as gatherings that happen around New Year’s. Any of which might require bringing something to eat or exchange or donate. Alas, I relate a little too well to Bad Moms Christmas, a movie about the angst of seasonal demands and that urge to rebel against them.

Holiday gifts and related food requirements can flummox me. However, this time around I’ve got a new strategy and it includes stopping at some of the numerous seasonal bazaars, fairs, markets, boutiques and other enterprises that spring up but once a year at area churches or other local organizations. With all that’s going on between Thanksgiving and Christmas, it’s easy to forget this small-scale commerce – is the bazaar this weekend or next? So, I’ll make a note and be sure to get the event on my shopping itinerary. With the locavore movement taking off, why not expand that concept beyond food to other goods we consume?

The Berlin Historical Society’s announcement about its holiday sale this weekend aligned with my thinking.

Certainly, there still will be trips to the mall and shopping online. Often I resort to a gift card. But a gift card can be improved with a personal touch and that’s where the holiday fair can help. Eversource on scammers: ‘don’t panic and don’t pay’ Eversource business and residential customers continue to pick up their phones and open their doors to find individuals falsely claiming to be “representatives” or “employees” of Eversource on the other side. These individuals either threaten disconnection of energy service if an immediate payment isn’t made with a prepaid debit card, or they use deceptive marketing tactics to mine for customers’ personal account information.

Scammers usually demand immediate payment with a prepaid debit card, such as Green Dot MoneyPak, Vanilla or Reloadit purchased from a local retailer, in order to stop the disconnection of services. As part of Utilities United Against Scams, a consortium of over 100 energy companies, Eversource is urging its customers to beware of scammers and to heed law enforcement’s warnings.

Hospital volunteer opportunities The Hospital of Central Connecticut offers volunteer opportunities. Several departments need volunteers at their reception desks. Volunteers also are needed at the main desk to provide escorting and guiding services as well as wheelchair assistance. Volunteers with a certified pet therapy dog are welcome. Cyber Monday sales soar

Father-daughter team to perform in ‘The Nutcracker’ Anastasia Houle and her father, Louis Houle, of Berlin, will dance in this year's production of “The Nutcracker,” scheduled at the Hoffman Auditorium, University of St. Joseph, 1678 Asylum Ave., West Hartford.

By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

Cyber Monday was expected to break records and become the busiest shopping day in U.S. history.

Anastasia, a member of the Ballet Theatre Company, will dance as a maid and Chinese lead. Louis will perform as a party adult.

Internet shoppers were expected to spend $6.6 billion with retail giants such as Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Target, according to Adobe Analytics. By comparison, shoppers spent $5 billion on Black Friday.

The ballet is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 14, 6:30 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 15, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 16, 1 and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 17, 1 and 4:30 p.m. A fee is charged.

In addition to deals and offers like free shipping on televisions, gaming systems, the iPad Air, and more, shoppers were courted hourly via email from aggressive retailers, such as J.C. Penney, T.J. Maxx, Kmart, and others pitching sales on everything from candles to appliances.

For more information and tickets, call 860-570-0440 or dancebtc.org.

Local retailers, entrepreneurs, and restaurateurs followed suit, taking advantage of the Cyber Monday phenomenon by selling nontraditional gifts and services that don’t necessarily ship in a box.

Kiwanis Club seeks new members Berlin Kiwanis is looking for service-minded men and women interested in volun-

Trifecta Ecosystems, located in Glastonbury and at 290 Pratt St. in Meriden, used Cyber Monday to sell its community supported agriculture package. For $145, customers were able to purchase eight weeks worth of fresh, locally grown salad greens and produce for pickup at either location. See Cyber, A17

saults on his wife and his step-son, and was courtmartialed by the Air Force. The Air Force failed to update the national criminal database used to conduct background checks when individuals buy guns, though. Those who work with victims of domestic violence said the same desire for control and domination is at play on a greater scale when an abuser commits a mass shooting.

The gunmen responsible for deaths in Las Vegas, Orlando, and San Bernardino all had histories of abusing women. In Sandy Hook, the gunman shot his mother before killing 20 children and six teachers. “This is unstudied territory — there is going to be a whole lot of opinion,” said Sharlene Kerelejza, executive director of MeridenWallingford Chrysalis. “It does seem like when there are these shootings, it’s almost like a precursor. There

are a cluster of risk factors — gun ownership, owning multiple guns, previous incidents of domestic violence.” Connecticut does have some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, including concealed carry and a ban on gun possession in the twoweek period between a request for a restraining order and when the hearing takes place. “That’s a big one,” Kerelejza said of the two-week peri-

od. Two denominators are present in domestic violence: a quest for control and domination, she said. “There is domination of a partner and having tools of control,” Kerelejza said. “Weapons are tools of control.” The abuser doesn’t have to use the weapons to elicit fear, but when they commit a mass shooting, the power and control theme are played out on a bigger scale on total strangers.

“As a society, we’re giving a lot of permission for people to be demonstrative over others and it’s in these gradually increasing public spaces,” Kerelejza said. “I’m glad the link is coming out because that’s where the prevention is going to be.” Homicide is the fifth leading cause of death for women, and possession of a firearm increases the risk of death five times in a domestic violence situation, according to Fortune.com. Democrat Jepsen won’t seek a 3rd term as attorney general By Susan Haigh Associated Press

HARTFORD — Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen announced Monday he won’t seek a third term in 2018, saying he wants to pursue different challenges but not a run for governor next year.

and more varied next year, rather than waiting until after he served another fouryear term. He said the decision not to run for re-election was a family one, completed over the Thanksgiving weekend.

“I turned 63 last week. Next year I’ll be 64. At 64, I’m still young enough to write a new and different chapter on life and look for other opportunities,” Jepsen said, adding how he believes those opportunities will be greater

Asked if he might run for governor next year, he said, “for this cycle, no.” He then quickly added how he’d be “surprised” if he would run in the following gubernatorial cycle, either. He was an unsuccessful lieutenant gov-

Various Democrats and Republicans are expected to run for attorney general now that there’s an open seat. Democratic Rep. William Tong, of Stamford, the House chairman of the legislature’s Judiciary Committee, said he will announce his plans on Tuesday. Jepsen credited his team at the Office of the Attorney General with having had “a remarkable success rate” over the past seven years, calling staff “superb public servants in the truest sense.”

Jepsen, a former state senator from Stamford, a former majority leader of the Connecticut Senate and a former chairman of the Connecticut Democratic Party, began serving as attorney general in 2011.
