“Our main concern is safety,” said Adam Leonard, adding he and his wife no longer allow their children to play in their yard. The PCBs were found after oil leaked from a puncture in an abandoned gas line into Belcher Brook. Eversource Energy, which owns the line, claimed responsibility for the leak. The brook, which runs into Silver Lake in Meriden, is next to Leonard’s home, where he lives with his wife, Michelle, and their two young children. Leonard reported the leak on Sept. 29. DEEP’s Emergency Response Coordinator Matthew Williamson said last week the emergency team was at the scene during the first weekend of the leak. He said his job, as supervisor, was to determine the source and remove it. “We made sure there was no immediate risk,” he said. The process was handed over to DEEP’s PCB division. Leonard said DEEP’s Lori Saliby had come to the home recently and said she would contact Eversource. Saliby did not immediately return requests for comment. Leonard said he feels there has been a lack of communication from Eversource. A spokesperson for Eversource said the company has maintained “constant communication” with the See Oil leak, A4

Initial sampling of surface water by EPA found limited PCBs. Sampling of the water after the completion of emergency response actions did not detect PCBs.

“All their concerns, we are addressing them now,” said Tricia Modifica of Eversource. “We wouldn’t leave the situation if there were any lingering concerns.” She said the site was “thoroughly cleaned up weeks ago,” and the last meeting with the Leonards was “right before Thanksgiving.” According to an Eversource report obtained by the Leonard family, samples from the oil released from the gas line and oil from inside the gas line were collected by EPA and Eversource from late September to October. Testing found concentrations of less than 10 miligrams of PCBs per

lowing the leak however, Leonard said he doesn’t feel comfortable letting his children near the area. He said he is also worried about the erosion that occurred during a heavy rain storm in October.

The report said two out of 69 sediment samples had detectable PCBs above laboratory reporting limits, but were not found in further samples following removal of the contaminated sediments.

Holiday Lights more good cheer than first appears By Olivia L. Lawrence The Citizen

You know that person who appears to have been born with the holiday spirit, who just exudes good cheer?

Of course, we still love our community events, the downtown seasonal celebrations along with church and choral festivities this time of year. But maybe you just want more or you need to find a night out that works into your schedule.

Shave billboards were a thing. But not those scary rides and all the peer pressure that goes with them.

Other highlights include a 100-foottall Christmas tree, the largest in Connecticut, warming stations around the park and, in the ballroom, Santa along with activities and crafts for the kids. Gift shops are open, too, if you just can’t get enough of shopping. There are dinosaurs decked out with lights, a 12 Days of Christmas display is strewn throughout the park and there are plenty more discoveries to be found as you walk around. HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

Coach Parafati: Seniors left their mark By Ajlal N. Khan Special to The Citizen

Being the only Berlin High School team in the Class L (large school) division this season didn’t help the BHS boys soccer squad come tournament time.

an overall record of 13-4-1 while scoring 62 goals. Also, the team claimed its third straight Central Connecticut Conference South Division title, recording 10 wins in league play.

Still, the Redcoats had a memorable year.

Contributing heavily this fall were seven All-State players and a deep rotation of seniors.

The locals managed to post

“As a coach, I was so fortu-

nate to have such a talented group of players,” Berlin’s head man Sal Parafati said. Despite the regular season success, Berlin’s stay in the state tournament was a brief one. The team fell to Bethel in the second round. That loss ended a storied high school run for 12 Redcoat seniors.

“Their talent, hard work and team unity was second-tonone and they will be remembered for a long time,” Parafati said of the group. “They won three conference titles in a row and no one can ever take that away from them.” While the loss of these seniors will sting, Parafati is confident in the team’s ability to bounce back.

“This situation is very similar to my first year as head coach, where we lost 14 seniors to graduation,” he said. “The hope is that the underclassmen step up and take ownership of this team and continue to play well.” Yes, Berlin shows no indication of letting up. As Parafati put it: “Is it August yet?”

Great season for soccer team, first-year coach

The Berlin girls posted a solid league record of 8-3 and an overall mark of 12-9. Furthermore, a modest 20th seed in the state tournament, the locals surprised several opponents on their way to the finals. Amenta and her players contribute much of their success to excellent conditioning.

Players like captain Julia Sisti echoed that.

“We will definitely prepare like we did this season but we will have to focus more on our offensive game. It’s all about who’s going to step up and be our goal scorers,” the coach said. “We’re losing Julia Sisti and Lexi Kavarsky, who really helped finish big games for us, so we need people to fill those two roles.”

Despite their top-notch conditioning, early on, the season looked to be in jeopardy for the Lady Redcoats, as they suffered through a fivegame losing skid.

“Although it was a five-game losing streak, those games were close and against some of the tops teams in the state. I kept telling them, if you compete on this level, in the postseason, you will go far. Trust me,” Amenta said.

If Amenta’s first season season is any indication, the future appears bright for the BHS girls soccer program.

“We saw being fit as our way to win the games that would come down to overtime or that would be decided by late goals,” Sisti said.

The Berlin squad was able to fight through the adversity, however.

The 2017 Berlin High School girls soccer team rolled up a record of 12-9 and advanced to the state finals for the first time in nearly two decades.

“Our team was very strong and very fit. I think that’s what led to a lot of our success in the postseason,” Amenta said. “We were more conditioned than a lot of the teams we faced.”

Amenta is already looking ahead to next year.

Finishing their 2017 campaign with a run that concluded in the state championship game, the Lady Redcoats experienced lots of success under first-year under coach Katie Amenta.

While the 2017 season ended with a loss, Amenta is confident in her team’s ability to take the next step.

With the fall season in the books and the winter season about to begin, we’re taking a look back at the Berlin High School girls soccer team’s impressive year.

The Lady Redcoats made it back to the state finals for the first time since 1998. Amenta was a member of that team.
